Message from the Vice Chancellor

It is a prime value of supreme law that the operation of legal system shall promote justice. In
order to continuously support and nourish this Ideal, the system of legal education has been
shouldering a great responsibility. It has responded to the social transformations undergone
due to globalization and other social needs. The emphasis on quality legal education,
competitive spirit and professional excellence has been the key force of change. The West
Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), which has emerged as a top
ranking national law university during last fourteen years, is both product and instrument of
this change.
NUJS provides to the young aspirant of legal education, an exciting forum of learning law,
honing the skills of profession and shaping the career to the best of his/her satisfaction and
society's expectation. The University has attained national and international reputation
because of its serious commitment to high academic standards at the undergraduate, post
graduate and research degree programmes, quality research and publications, excellent
performance in moot court competitions and systematic pedagogy of learning at various
levels. Interaction with a cluster of foreign universities in the West and East has been helpful
in getting the international scholars of great repute to the institution so that the students and
faculty would be abreast with the global development.
The legal aid and legal literacy programs conducted by the University have distinct features
of active collaboration with civil society organizations, continuing assistance to the
aggrieved, service of legal clinic open to public throughout the year, and live hearing of cases
relating to violence against women and children, especially those rescued from exploitations.
Students are given the opportunity of learning the law by involving themselves in activities of
various student based societies and groups. Social responsibility of the University is also
manifest in extending scholarships and fee concessions, and encouragement to students in
helping orphan and street children and the marginalized to have access to education.
Teaching by committed and highly knowledgeable faculty and their guidance constitute a
significant feature of the institution. The curriculum and the course structure of B.A. LL.B.
(Hons.), one year LL.M., M.Phil., Ph.D. and LL.D. programmes are vibrant, innovative and
up to date. There are also Diploma programmes in and off campus. The University has an
excellent library with perfect collection of print and e-resources of books, journals and
reports. Well-furnished and fascinating moot court hall, computer lab and auditoriums
support the skill-learning process and intellectual activities of the budding lawyers. NUJS not
only organizes prestigious moot court competitions, but reasonably supports international
moot teams so that students get exposure to the international moot experience. The annual
debate competition, cultural and sports events and participation in national level competitions
provide immense opportunity of blossoming of individual talents and leadership qualities.
The internships in law firms, advocates chambers, legal departments and institutions infuse
in them professional skills and practical experience.
The flagship journals of the University include NUJS Law Review, Journal of Indian Law
and Society and Journal of Telecommunication and Broadcasting Law.These student-edited

journals have been widely received by the legal fraternity. In order to promote writing skill
and critical thinking, annual essay competitions are also organized. The students and faculty
publish high-quality articles in national and international journals. The prestigious
endowment lectures in the memory of Justice D.D. Basu, Prof. K.C. Basu and Sri M.K.
Nambyar expand the horizons of knowledge.
Located in prime part of Kolkata, NUJS has a beautiful building to house academic and
administrative sections. Reasonably good and separate hostel facility for girls and boys with
well-run mess, pure water and ambient atmosphere to study adorn the features of the halls of
residence. Though modest, the campus is well maintained with gardens, flowering plants, and
trees.
The attractive features and facilities of NUJS provide opportunities to young minds to
prepare themselves for life's journey in a most confident and comfortable way. Mixing of
humanism with knowledge and reason with thought and action is a constant habit one has to

About NUJS
The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) was established under the
WBNUJS Act, 1999 (West Bengal Act IX of 1999). It is a university within the meaning of
sub-section (f) of Section 2 and Section 12-B of the UGC Act, 1956 and has permanent
affiliation from the Bar Council of India. In Its relatively short existence, NUJS has firmly
established itself as one of the premier National Law Schools and top-ranking centres of legal
education in India.
Location and Infrastructure

NUJS is located in the city of Kolkata, one of the major metropolises of India. Kolkata, the
City of Joy is renowned for its heritage and culture. A subtle blend of tradition and modernity
distinguishes the city from the rest. The old Kolkata thrives alongside the growing expanses
of modern townships including Salt Lake City, where the NUJS Campus is situated.
All-round Education
NUJS has a diverse and vibrant student community from all over India including several
foreign nationals. While the key focus is on academics, NUJS also has highly developed
sports and cultural programmes, with teams regularly excelling at various national and
international-level competitions. The student society of NUJS conducts popular year-round
competitions in music, dance, painting, quizzing, debating, creative writing and sports. NUJS
holds tournaments not just in mainstream sports such as cricket, football and volleyball, but
even sports like dodge-ball and kabaddi. Adding in colour to life at NUJS are other western
and eastern music bands, who have proved their mettle at competitions all across the country.
NUJS students also do not neglect their social responsibilities. The Legal Aid Society
provides a platform for students to apply the skills and knowledge acquired in the classrooms
and meaningfully contributes to the community.
Faculty
NUJS also has an excellent faculty group with a good mix of young and experienced
scholars. They have achieved a lot in a short span of time and also been contributing
tremendously in the grooming of the NUJS students. It is the combination of a vibrant student
community and an excellent faculty supported by an active administration that confirms
NUJS' position as a world class institution. NUJS therefore strives to achieve a holistic output
so far as legal education In India is concerned. The Honble Chief Justice of India is the
Chancellor of NUJS and also the Chairman of the General Council, the supreme policymaking body of the University. Dr. P. Ishwara Bhat is the current ViceChancellor of the
University. The objectives of the University inter alia are to:

NUJS Campus
NUJS campus is located in the Salt Lake City of Kolkata overlooking the Eastern
Metropolitan Bypass. The campus is well connected to the railway stations in Kolkata, the
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport and other well-known destinations in
Kolkata such as Park Street and Victoria Memorial. The NUJS campus is spread over an area
of five acres of land comprising of an academic block, the halls of residence and a few flats
for the faculty members. The campus also has an auditorium and a gymnasium for the
students and the staff and faculties of NUJS. NUJS has built its own auditorium, on campus,
with all modern facilities. The last convocation of NUJS was held in this University
Auditorium in February, 2014.
The academic block of the campus has the NUJS library; two fully air-conditioned
conference rooms; a specious moot court hall, two huge lecture theatres equipped with
teleconferencing facilities, offices of the Vice Chancellor and the Registrar; offices of the
faculty members and staff; LL.B. and LL.M. classrooms; and a canteen. NUJS provides
several facilities to its students and faculty members and is continuously striving to improve
upon many of the existing facilities and add new facilities. NUJS students have access to
computer and internet services in the library along with photocopying and printing services.
Students and faculty members have access to major legal databases such as Hein Online,
Westlaw, Lexis Nexis, JSTOR, Manupatra and other databases.
Every faculty member of NUJS has an independent desk/workstation, access to a personal
computer/laptop and internet facilities in their respective offices. The faculty members also
have adequate storage space and access to other desk services such as printing and intercom
services in their offices.

The students of NUJS have excelled in almost every field. They have proven their mettle in
various areas such as Moot Courts, Debates, and Essay Writing. Our students also have
publications in various international and national journals and have participated in a plethora
of seminars.

Student Organisations
The Student Juridical Association (SJA) is the organization of students to promote cocurricular and extra-curricular activities. Certain co-curricular programmes are required
activities for all students for which academic credits are assigned. Non-participation will
entail negative marking and therefore students are advised in their own interest to make the
best use of facilities offered. The nature and variety of co-curricular programmes depend on
the interest and initiation of students for which Faculty Advisors are assigned in appropriate
cases.
At NUJS, students form an integral part of the day to day running of the University. For this
purpose, various societies have been created for the organization of events and managing of
students' activities.

Weekly Faculty Seminar Series
NUJS organises Faculty Seminars on a weekly basis as a forum for the University Faculty
and visiting scholars to discussand deliberate upon their current research and other academic
works with their colleagues. Weekly Faculty Seminar Series provide the faculty with
opportunities to engage in a more Intensive way with a range of contemporary scholarly
debates.
The University has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mr. Rahul
Bhandare, independent entrepreneur, New Delhi and launched a form named as Justice
Sunanda Bhandare Forum for Natural Resources Laws (SBFNRL) in the University on 30th
November, 2013.
Internal Complaints Committee
The University has established Internal Complaints Committee under the Central Act
governing protection of women from sexual harassment at workplace. Sensitization measures
against ragging and sexual harassment have also been taken. Guidelines for protection of
interns against sexual harassment have been finalized.

Different Programmes of Study offered by the University
B.A./B.Sc. LL.B. (Hons.) Programme
The B.A/B.Sc. LL.B. (Hons.) Degree Course attracts school (Higher Secondary) leaving
bright young aspirants to the field of law. The five-year undergraduate course is divided into
ten semesters. The students represent almost all the states of India and foreign countries. This
programme exposes the students to Indian modes of legal education (which emphasize
critical thinking and self-inquiry) as well as to procedural and substantive laws. It also
enhances the students' ability to do advanced scholarly work.
LL.M. Programme
The LL.M. degree course is a one-year post graduate course. This programme is introduced
to attract students who either wish to join the academia or seek to acquire advanced research
skills before joining the legal profession. The students therefore come from a wide variety of
backgrounds with divergent legal interests and career plans. Our senior faculty members
work closely with the students to help them in realising their full academic potential. We also
actively involve students in our ongoing efforts to improve and enhance the programme.
Together, we work to make each student's experience in NUJS a rich and fulfilling one that
broadens his or her intellectual horizons.
The LLM. programme comprises of a range of compulsory and optional courses and a
dissertation to be completed within a time frame of two semesters having duration of eighteen
weeks each.
M. Phil. Programme
The M. Phil Degree Programme is specifically designed for aspiring legal academics i.e.,
students who wish to pursue sustained independent study and research and are planning

careers in law teaching. The candidate will be eligible for receipt of the degree only if he/she
completes the prescribed requirements of the course within a maximum period of three years.
Ph.D. and LL.D. Programmes
The Ph.D. and LL.D. degrees are two of the most advanced law degrees offered by the
University. The candidates to these degrees are expected to produce a thesis that will
constitute a substantial and valuable contribution to legal scholarship. The students would be
expected to incorporate the insights of other disciplines into their work, drawing on the
expertise and assistance not only available at NUJS, but also from other leading universities
of the world. The doctoral programme calls for intense individual efforts requiring sustained
discipline and self-direction. Since the doctoral programme is designed to train law teachers,
having the opportunity to practice one's teaching skills is critical. The candidate would
therefore be given teaching assignments in addition to making presentations before the
faculty community.

Eligibility and other criteria can be looked into from the CLAT website at www.clat.ac.in
Attendance
An LL.B. student once admitted will be required to attend 75% of classes so as to be eligible
to write the exams.
Evaluation
Evaluation is based on a combination of projects and end semester paper. However, for the
1st year and 2nd year students the evaluation would be based on tutorials and end semester
paper. The total marks on which students across the batches are to be evaluated is 100. The
break up is as follows (this is subject to change at the discretion of the concerned subject
teacher, with prior approval of the Vice Chancellor):-

Ph.D.
Admission to Ph.D. is through an entrance test and interview. Applications for the entrance
test shall be invited once a year in the month of July, depending on the vacancies existing in
each specialized area. The provisionally registered Ph.D. candidates shall undergo Ph.D.

course work of one semester (16 weeks) duration from the date of Provisional Registration
prescribed by the University.
After successful completion of course work, a candidate will choose a topic for Ph.D. thesis.
The candidate is eligible to submit thesis for evaluation only after completing three years of
research work from the date of provisional registration. The Ph.D. registration is valid for
five years from the date of provisional registration with the possible extension of another two
years by following the prescribed procedure and paying the penalty.

Post Graduate Diploma in Air and Space Law (PGDASL)
The significance of Air Law and Space Law needs no explanation due to indispensable uses
of airspace and outer space for the purposes ranging from commercial to military. The
increasing volume of disputes in the field of air and space has also resulted in the manifold
increase in the legal practitioners working in the field of air and space at developed countries
like the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Russia, Japan, France, Australia etc.
Keeping this in mind, the Post Graduate Diploma in Air and Space Law (PGDASL) is a
unique initiative undertaken at NUJS, Kolkata to promote the awareness in these specialized
areas. The Course is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of Air Law and Space
Law along with some fundamental principles of public international law related to air and

Post Graduate Diploma in Nuclear Law (PGDNL)

Post Graduate Diploma in Nuclear Law is one of the most innovative courses in law offered
by the WBNUJS, Kolkata in collaboration with Department of Atomic Energy, Anushakti
Bhavan, Mumbai. In the background of growing Importance of the technology and energy
related laws, a study of nuclear law has great use for operators of nuclear plant, vendors, legal
practitioners, officers of AEC and BARC and the students having both legal and scientific
background. The course is unique and highly useful in understanding the laws relating to
liability for nuclear damage, nuclear safety and regulatory regime, nuclear non-proliferation,
nuclear safeguards and dispute settlement in addition to basic principles of nuclear law. This
course has the credit of being the first of its kind on the subject initiated in India with
Government collaboration.

Post Graduate Diploma in Business Laws
With globalization, liberalization and the ever changing and evolving national and
international regulatory framework, knowledge and exposure of laws affecting domestic and
international businesses is critical in thoroughly understanding the underpinnings of the
business, nationally and globally. It is with this intent that NUJS has started One Year Post
Graduate Diploma Programme in Business Laws for the students, entrepreneurs, executives
working in the corporate sector and others. The course is conducted through a flexible
pedagogy and contact classes are held at the NUJS campus. Experts, in their fields, drawn
from all over the country along with the NUJS faculty are involved in teaching the Diploma
students.
Post Graduate Diploma in Human Rights
The continuing aspiration of an individual to seek an environment where one is treated with
equity, equality and justice represents the evolution of Human Rights. The concept of human
rights of justice and of human dignity as such date back to antiquity. The Institutionalization
of human rights in national and international constitutional documents is a development
which has penetrated into international system at the end of eighteenth century. During this
period, fundamental rights were for the first time listed in catalogues similar to those
available in our constitutions today. The objective of this course is to familiarize students to
various aspects of human rights. Human rights education not only provides an understanding
of one's own rights but also of fostering an attitude of tolerance, goodwill and removal of
prejudices towards fellow human beings. The topics in this course are chosen carefully so
that the students can be motivated to pursue their interest in the field of human rights.
The course comprises of three papers namely, (1) Human Rights and the Indian Constitution,
(2) International Human Rights Law and (3) Rights of Special Groups.
The course is supported by The University Grants Commission (UGC). The eligibility
criterion is a Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized University. The course
will be conducted in English thrice a week at NUJS premises. The total course fee is
INR.10500 (Ten thousand and Five hundred only).

Diploma in Entrepreneurship Administration and Business Laws in collaboration with

iPleaders
NUJS has started a new diploma course in association with iPleaders on Entrepreneurship
Administration and Business Laws - for entrepreneurs and students interested in starting
their own ventures. Keeping in mind that a large number of college students have been taking
up entrepreneurship, the course has been kept open to anyone who has passed 10+2, is
reasonably proficient in English and usage of computer and the internet. There is no age limit
tojoin the course since there is no minimum or maximum age for starting a business.
As entrepreneurs are not expected to attend regular classes, the course will be entirely online
with some optional live classes, arid can be accessed with Internet from anywhere. The
course is recommended for early stage entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs, those who are
planning to start their own business or start up company at some point in their career, or work
in a decision making capacity and managers, who want to add legal skills to their profile.
Lawyers who want to work with a start up clientele or would like to develop practical
business law skills will also find this course beneficial.

NUJS Summer School

The W.B. National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata, in association with the Faculty
Members from Department of Law, National University of Singapore, has conducted two
editions of a Summer School Certificate Programme at the Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of
Management, Shillong Campus. This Summer Law School Programme offers the unique
opportunity to receive intensive legal training on diverse subjects of global and comparative
concerns from academics of international repute and experience. Courses offered have ranges
from Modern Indian Penal Code, Legal Argument and Narrative and Comparative
Constitutionalism and Constitutional Rights in India to Mergers and Acquisitions, Corporate
Governance and Negotiating Syndicated Loan Agreements.

The University has Memorandum of Understanding with some foreign universities such as
Universidad Pontificia Camillas and University of Erasmus. Three students from Universidad
Pontificia Camillas have studied in NUJS for one semester. The Spanish University has also

NUJS Merit-cum-Means Scholarship
With a view to promote higher academic pursuit in legal studies to the student of NUJS is
been awarded under the NUJS Merit-cum-Means and 'Need Based Scholarship Schemes',
The Merit of the applicant means marks obtained in aggregate (CGPA, GPA) in the
immediately preceding examination. The Means shall connote annual income of both the
parents taken together, or as the case may be. The total score of Merit + Means is considered
for preparing scholarship list.
LL.M. Scholarship
With a view to promote higher academic pursuit in legal studies, two merit scholarships
namely 'The R. Gopalakirshnan Scholarship and The Saroja Gopalkrishnan Scholarship
have been instituted by Shri Gopal Subramanium, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India.
This Scholarship, valued at Rs. 2000 each per month are awarded to best two students of
LL.M. in the merit list.

Moot Court Competition
Since the very beginning, students of NUJS have shown consistency in their excellence In
National as well as International Moot Court competitions, Besides winning several
competitions, and a few being the First Indian team to do so, the Moot Court Society of the
University has organized five NUJS National Moot Court Competitions. From 2004-2007,
NUJS organized the national moot court competition on Corporate Social Responsibility. In
2008, NUJS collaborated with Herbert Smith, a top London based law firm, and organized
the moot court competition on Corporate Law, which has become an annual feature of the
mooting circuit now.
Some past notable achievements include:
10TH WILLEM C. VIS. INTERNATIONAL COMMERCIAL ARBITRATION MOOT,
VIENNA, 2003: The NUJS team is the first one from India, In the history of the competition,
to have emerged champions, apart from being the second Asian University to achieve this
feat. The team emerged victorious defeating 128 Law Schools, which Included institutions
like Harvard, Monash, Copenhagen, Cologne and Humboldt, to name just a few, from more
than 44 countries in the world and is also the first ever Law School to achieve this distinction
in their first year of participation at the said competition.
THE COMMONWEALTH MOOT COURT COMPETITION, MELBOURNE, 2003: The
team from NUJS, which was selected to represent South Asia by emerging as Champions in
the South Asian Region Selection Round, defeated well-known law schools across the
Commonwealth of countries and emerged as runners-up. This is the best performance by
India and the region of South Asia in the history of the Commonwealth Moot Court
Competition.
WILLEM C. VIS [EAST], INTERNATIONAL COMMERCIAL ARBITRATION MOOT,
HONG KONG, 2004 & 2005: At the inaugural edition of this competition, the NUJS team
representing India awarded the Neil Kaplan Best Oralist Award, the 2nd Best Speaker
Award, They were also the recipients of the Fali Nariman Respondent Memorial Award. In
2005, NUJS were the champions..
THE COMMONWEALTH MOOT COURT COMPETITION, LONDON, 2005: NUJS
team emerged champions at the South Asian Regional Round of the Comma nwealthand was
semi-finalists in the international round. Best speaker at both National and International
rounds.
STETSON INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENT MOOT COURT COMPETITION,
FLORIDA, 2005: The team from NUJS won the international rounds of the Stetson
International Environment Moot Court Competition, An NUJS team-member was declared
8th best oralist at the international round, and the team came 2nd in Northern National
Rounds.
THE ELSA WTO MOOT COURT COMPETITION, GENEVA, 2006: This was the first
time NUJS has sent a team to the ELSA WTO Moot Court Competition. The NUJS team was

adjudged the winner at the Southwest Asia Regional Round with Best Overall Written
Submissions. At the International Round, it was ranked first in the Preliminary Ranking
Rounds and was awarded the 'Gabrielle Marceau Award' for Best Complainant Memorial.
MANFRED LACHS INTERNATIONAL SPACE LAW MOOT COURT COMPETITION,
SYDNEY, 2006: NUJS team won the ISRO sponsored National rounds in Bangalore and was
semi-finalist at Asia Pacific rounds in Sydney.

Ms. Amba Kak of the graduated 2012 batch has won the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship in
2013- 2014. Ms. Sreerupa Chaudhari and Ms. Monalisa Saha worked on a project related to
bribe hackers aimed at fighting and reporting of corruption from an US NGO, World Justice
Project, after a worldwide competition and won US $ 30,000. It is an initiative to bridge the
gap between law enforcing agencies and victims of bribes.

Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, inventor of the Mohan Veena In association with SPIC
MACAY. This was followed the auditions for the various university teams, beginning with
theatre in August 2012 and followed by vocals, dance & fine arts in September 2012.
Students of the university also participated in NH-65, NLU-Jodhpur's annual cultural fest.
Similarly students also represented the university in Samagam 2012, the annual cultural fest
of Loreto College, Kolkata and HT Guwahati's fest, Alcheringa.
The Cultural Committee, along with the SJA and other societies also helped in the
organisation of Outlawed 2013, the annual cultural fest and conducted several events such
as Group Dance, 60Seconds of Fame and Fashion Show. There were also several new events

The fest saw participation from colleges outside the city as well as many from within
Kolkata. The Cultural Committee, in association with the Mess Committee also organised

year with its production of Lend Me A Tenor, a comedy written by Ken Ludwig in April
2013.

Legal Aid Society

The NUJS Legal Aid Society is the body which inducts students to use their knowledge of
law to provide free legal aid to those who are most in need of it through various media. The
Legal Aid functions that it performs are preventive, remedial, activist and reformative. The
NUJS Legal Aid Society since past twelve years has been recognized as one of the foremost
Law School Legal Aid Clinics in India.
National Conference
The concept of conducting a national conference annually is to bring together eminent people
from around India and initiate an interactive discussion on contemporary issues of socio-legal
relevance. In the first three editions of the National Conference, the NUJS LAS has
successfully covered themes like Good Governance, the Deemed Homeless and Child Rights.
The 4th National Conference, held in 2014, on Access to Justice saw a change in the pattern
that had been followed in the preceding years. This year, the conference included, in addition
to various panel discussions and talks by eminent personalities, a two-day workshop. The
idea was to include student representatives from legal aid societies across different law
colleges in the country in order to build a network across the nation and ensure more effective
and far-reaching initiatives and efforts in the field of legal aid.

Camps
From slums in West Bengal to villages in Jharkhand, Odisha, Meghalaya and Tripura, the
Society has constantly sought to expand the mandate of spreading legal awareness among
people in various areas of the country, by organizing legal awareness camps. During the
academic year 2013-2014, the NUJS LAS reached out to places like Ranchi and Agartala
through their initiatives. Primarily dealing with issues pertinent to each respective area we
visit, focusing mostly on family laws, domestic violence and basic rights of the people, the
aim of these camps is to make the general public more cognizant of their rights and to enable
them to exercise these rights so as to achieve a better and more secure life. These camps also
give the people a general idea regarding who to approach in case of socio-legal problems so
that they face less exploitation at the hands of the powerful.
Advocating Benefits of RTE in local slums

The Right to Education is a fundamental right enshrined in the Constitution that guarantees
free education to children between the ages of six and fourteen. Unfortunately, due to a lack
of awareness, the mandate has not been successfully implemented. The NUJS LAW aims to
overcome this information gap by collecting relevant date from the disadvantaged sections of
our society and approaching local schools to enroll these students. In the past year, the
Society conducted an RTI Drive in the local slum of Dattabad. The Society believes that
besides helping the members understand the effectiveness of its initiative, the information
collected thereby shall be of immense aid in its future endeavours as well.
Shadhinota
In August 2010, the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) joined hands with the
NUJS Legal Aid Society in approaching the task of providing legal empowerment to the
inmates in a manner which had never been tried before. This project has been named
'SHADHINOTA a Bengali word which, translated into English means freedom. It is an
effort towards securing the rights of those behind bars to have efficient and effective legal
representation, so as to have their cases heard in an expeditious manner with the ultimate goal
being to securing justice for them.
Legal Aid Clinic

The NUJS Legal Aid Society has provided legal advice and counselling since its very
inception on various matters which have been brought before it, while this has been done for
several persons who have visited the NUJS campus, since the last year, we have started an eLegal Aid Clinic wherein queries can be submitted online as well. As a result of this the
NUJS Legal Aid Society has been able to provide counselling without any restrictions on
geographical boundaries. Prof N Konar as a faculty member has been the backbone of much
of the client counselling programme. So as to ensure that the client counselling programme
gets popularized and is known to the people of the areas around the NUJS campus, brochures
in Bangla were prepared and placed with the shopkeepers in the neighbouring areas

explaining the sort of work done by the NUJS Legal Aid Society's Clinic and the counselling
timings. These brochures have been received positively and there seems to be a good
response to them. We hope to strengthen our relationship with the various NGOs and other
organizations so as to get a steady stream of clients for the client counselling programme and
also take the help of the NUJS alumni and other eminent lawyers practicing in Kolkata for
providing us with advice on various issues.
Legal Aid Workshop at Puri, Orissa
On September 1, 2012, NUJS LAS in association CGGSJ and DLSA Puri organized a legal
awareness camp for the socially disadvantaged communities and rural people at Puri, The
program was attended by about 250 people. Our LAS students presented on various legal
subjects. It was widely covered by the Oriya regional media.
Collaboration with HRLN

The Society, in collaboration with the Human Rights Law Network (HRLN), has been
conducting regular client counselling clinics since early 2014. The purpose of these clinics is
to provide free legal advice to people with economically backward backgrounds. The
members endeavour to reach out to more people through these clinics and use this network as
a platform for future camps that aim to spread legal awareness on socially relevant issues
Memorandum of Understanding with International Justice Mission

The International Justice Mission (IJM) is a human rights agency that strives to secure Justice
for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression. IJM
lawyers, investigators and aftercare professionals work with local governments to ensure
victim rescue, to prosecute perpetrators and to strengthen the community and civic factors
that promote functioning public justice systems. Following various workshops and activities
conducted alongside by IJM in collaboration with NUJS a formal Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) was signed between the NUJS Legal Aid Society and UM, thereby
establishing two Research Teams of student body. One would assist UM n research on
various laws and cases on Anti-Human Trafficking. These are generally thematic and caserelated research largely relating to trafficking and the second team would assist them in
preparing a Handbook on various cases which a Prosecutor would use as a tool while
preparing for his legal court cases on Human Trafficking.
Tie-Up with Apne Aap

The NUJS LAS has entered into a full-fledged collaboration with the Apne Aap Women
Worldwide, with the aim of working for the betterment of those women who have been
pushed into the flesh-trade either by coercion or due to their unfortunate circumstances. In the

past year, the Society has visited areas like Khidderpore and Sonargachhi as part of this
collaborative effort. The objective of this project is to protect the rights of these women by
enabling them to extricate themselves from their misery by being able to pursue an
empowered existence.
Handbill on Prohibition of Corporal Punishments on Children in Schools and Hostels

Legislative Advocacy aiming at plugging the void In this area of child rights specifically
aiming at students of West Bengal who are subjected to various physical punishments and
trying to map out a basic structure of rules or guidelines to address the issue. Students along
with the Faculty Advisor were involved in making the draft successful constructed.
Barefoot Lawyers Certificate Course at NUJS

Also designated as the Paralegal Volunteers Course, this is aimed at imparting education on
basic legal rights to common people. In this programmed, Legal Aid Society collaborated
with an NGO called Manob Jamin who sent their representatives (around 10 people) to
undergo a 3 day training by the Legal Aid Society members, The course materials were
basically on the lines of NALSA (National Legal Aid Service Authority). A test was also
taken at the end of the programme and thereafter certificates were distributed on passing the
examination.
Literacy Programme for the Mess Workers and Evening Classes for their children
For the past several years, the NUJS Legal Aid Society has been conducting evening and
night classes for the mess-workers, other non-teaching staff and their children. In this year,
we had five students in the night class who were mess-workers of the university as well as the
daughter of one of the mess-workers. Students in these classes are generally studying from
5th grade till 12th grade. Since the students are from different parts of India (particularly
West Bengal, Bihar and Orissa) they are taught in their respective vernaculars and English
and for this we draw upon the student body and appoint students to teach in the student's
native tongue.
Legal Aid Camps

The NUJS Legal Aid Society has been since its very inception organizing legal literacy and
legal aid camps in various parts of West Bengal. While traditionally legal aid tackled onlythe
poorest and most marginalized, our policy has been to provide legal aid to those who need it
the most This would mean that while we do focus on those most in need, we do not ignore the
concerns of the somewhat better Of persons as regards specific Issues such as consumer
protection and the right to information.
The faculty and students in association with various NGOs organize legal literacy camps
largely in rural and socio-economically backward areas, schools and local community centres

to inform the citizens about their legal rights, legal institutions and social-welfare legislations
which are meant for their economic and social benefit. During the camp students under the
supervision of faculties also lend advice to these clients having legal dispute or suffering
from social, matrimonial or administrative abuse. Occasionally in these camps also act as
forums to settle disputes by employing alternative dispute resolution procedures. The students
help the clients who seek resolution from the forum to understand their goals and counsel
clients to facilitate settlement. The camps almost always have a street play which has rapidly
become a very popular medium at NUJS. We tailor the plays depending upon the audience
we are addressing. Through this, we address specific issues in a language or gestures which
can be easily understood by everyone and can show the law in action.
Publications
The Legal Aid Society brings out publications for two reasons. Firstly, it is to ensure that
those within the legal fraternity work and significance of Legal Aid. Secondly, it is to ensure
that those outside the legal fraternity do not find law to be an alien and disempowering
discipline by translating legalese into ordinary language. Therefore, the publications try to
create awareness about the law by trying to break down the aura of inaccessibility that most
legal issues seem to take on.
Asian Journal of Legal Education- As a part of its continuing extension, the society has now
undertaken an initiative to publish a journal on legal education bi-annually. The journal
aspires to promote greater interest among legal academia and professionals to undertake
serious academic research on issues involving pedagogy of law, social justice, and concerns
for legal education in the globalised era in the Asian region. It also aims to serve as a forum
for legal educators and professionals who are engaged in experiments to make legal
education and profession of law more meaningful and social Justice oriented.
Brochure-The NUJS Legal Aid Society Brochure is a quick way to know about the history of
Legal Aid in India, the work done by the NUJS Legal Aid Society as well as how it is that
someone who needs Legal Aid can get in touch with us. This is meant to be passed around at
gatherings and contains pictorial depictions of the various activities we do so as to enable
those who are unable to read to understand what it is that the NUJS Legal Aid Society does.
Let's Get Talking!- The magazine Lets Get Talking!' was conceptualized with the aim of
creating a space for a discussion of relevant socio-legal issues in language that is free from
complex legalese. The objective is to generate an informed public debate amongst anyone
who reads this magazine. Each issue is based on a theme (so far we have had themes such as
'Moral Policing' and 'Euthanasia the third theme which recently got published in on 'Age of
Consent- Affecting Choice of Individuals' the title of the magazine is "Are we Old enough?'
Legal Aid Blog- The blog updates the activities of the Society and also reveals the up-coming
plans, Writings on several topics like Clinical Legal Education,

Clothes Drive
However, not per se a legal aid activity, but Legal Aid Society has also engaged itself in
social activities like a clothes drive where the Society has collaborated with an NGO called
Parivar where the collected materials from the Clothes drive are provided to under-privileged
population in Kolkata. Legal Aid Society acknowledges the assistance that Parivar has
provided by making it a huge success.

Recruitment Process and Guideline

The Guidelines for Campus Recruitment have been formulated to ensure optimal flexibility
and fairness for Recruiters/ Prospective Recruiters as well as students.The recruitment
process organized the CRC is usually a two-step process. All interested organizations are first

encouraged to give a pre-placement talk (PPT) to interested students at the University. The
PPT usually contains important information such as the profile of the organization, career
prospects, terms and conditions of employment and compensation packages.The idea behind
such a talk is to provide both the organization as well as the students an opportunity to
interact with each other, this ensures that both the students as well I as the organisation have a
fair idea about what to expect and get to make an informed choice.
The second part of the recruitment is the actual recruitment process, which happens in the
recruitment week. The final placement usually takes place on the University campus over a
period of seven to ten days. Interested organizations who may or may not have made a PPT
have to inform/register with the CRC and are allotted a specific date and time-slot within the
days of the recruitment week. In this regard, interested organizations are requested to contact
the CRC directly at the mailing address provided.
Organizations participating in the final placement process are free to follow their own
recruitment process, which may include an application process followed by a short-listing of
candidates followed by an interview, either on campus or telephonic. Whatever the process
followed by the recruiter, they are required to provide prior intimation of the same to the
CRC to enable the process to be organized without any glitches or delays. Organizations are
also required to disclose the terms and conditions of employment as well as the compensation
package upon confirmation of their participation in the final placement process.
Organizations may also make Pre-Recruitment Offers (PROs) to students of the final year
before the commencement of the final placement. Such offers are usually done after a student
has done an internship with the concerned organisation and may be made directly to the
individual concerned, or may be facilitated by the CRC upon request. A student who accepts
such an offer is subsequently barred from participating In the final placement.
The CRC does not in any manner encourage or facilitate individual applications for
recruitment by students, and organizations are requested to take note of the same.

Journals of the University
The three journals of the University run and edited by students are the NUJS Law Review,
the Journal of Law and Society and the Journal of Telecommunication and Broadcasting
Law. They are brought out regularly with scholarly articles reflecting high research standard
produced by authors of national and International reputation. The NUJS Law Review has
been rated as a journal of high quality and the most frequently referred journal. In promoting
the culture of legal writing amidst students and faculty they have played significant role. The
International Journal of Law and Policy Review and International Journal of Studies and
Research, two on-line Journals edited by Dr. Arup Kumar Poddar have been value additions
to NUJS publications. Receipt of publication grant from UGC has strengthened our financial
ability to publish. Asian Journal of Legal Education is a new journal launched by the Legal
Aid Society in collaboration with Sage Publishers. Professor Manoj Kumar Sinha and
Anirban Chakraborty are Editors of this journal.
The University has recently released a book on 'Constitutionalism and Constitutional
Pluralism: Contemporary issues in India, South-East Asia, China & Europe' published by
Lexis Nexis in memory of Late Dr. D. D. Basu. In order to support academic writing by
students, the University has entered Into an MoU with Lexis Nexis for sponsoring an annual
Essay Competition on Constitutional Law in memory of Late Dr. D D Basu. The Vice
Chancellor has edited a book on Inter- State and International Water Disputes, which contains
8 articles of NUJS faculty and researchers. The book received a royalty of one lakh which has
been endowed for instituting two gold medals. Dr. Anirban Mazumdar has received major
Research Project approved by UGC.
NUJS Law Review

The NUJS Law Review, launched in 2008, is the flagship journal of The WB. National
University ofJuridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata, The Journal is a student-initiative and Vice
Chancellor of NUJS is the Editor-in-Chief. It is managed by a 'Board of Editors' and a body
of Associate Members, and provides an exclusive platform to the student and faculty
community at NUJS and outside, to publish their work.
The Journal has steadily risen to be well regarded in the professional and academic circles in
India as a beacon light of quality legal research. It is the only Law Review to be published by
any National Law School on a quarterly basis. The Washington and Lee University School of
Law ranking of law journals ranked the NUJS Law Review as number one, the highest in

The Indian Juridical Review has been re-christened as Journal of Indian Law and Society
and has already been published. The main objective of the journal Is to analyze recent and
past legal issues through a prism of sociology, political sciences, history, economics and
other social sciences.
Journal of Telecommunication and Broadcasting Law (JTBL)
The Journal of Telecommunication and Broadcasting Law is an international, peer-reviewed
Journal of NUJS. Created in 2011-12, the Journal is dedicated to pioneer legal scholarship in
the field of telecommunication and broadcasting laws. JTBL strives to publish relevant
research on said disciplines, encourages deliberations on subjects of interdisciplinary nature
and includes review of laws and policies involved in the world to initiate a platform for
global scholarly writing and debate on the field of telecommunication and broadcasting.
Endowments
Prof. N. R. Madhava Menon Media Law Endowment
On April 2001, WBNUJS received an endowment of Rs. 3 Lakhs from the founder Vice
Chancellor of NUJS, Professor N. R. Madhava Menon, for promotion of the scholarship in
Media Law, a subject he himself taught at WBNUJS. The Executive Council of the
University, vide Resolution No, 5 of 2.2,2002, approved the media Law Endowment
Fund,and directed a long-term deposit to accrue the best interest possible. Proceeds from the
endowment are intended to be utilized for one or more of the following activities to be
organized by the University on the recommendation of the Faculty Council and the Vice
Chancellor.

value of Rs. 6000.00 to the under graduate or post graduate students as part of their

Organize a Seminar or Workshop, involving lawyers and journalists, as part of the

Any other related activities, which contributes towards the advancement of

The University shall keep the endowment in perpetuity, and shall only use the interest every

Keshab Chandra Basu Endowment on Law & Economics
Professor Kaushik Basu, Professor of Economics in Cornell University, USA, and son of Late
Mr. Keshab Chandra Basu, who was a lawyer and a politician of repute in post-Independence

Bengal, created an endowment of Rs.3 lakhs to promote the study of law-economics interface
in WBNUJS.
Professor Amartya Sen delivered the first Keshab Chandra Basu Memorial Lecture on "Law,
Economics and Social Change; on December 20, 2003.
Professor Pranab Bardhan delivered the second Keshab Chandra Basu lecture on "Legal &

M. K. Nambyar Endowment Lecture
An important addition to the list of endowment lectures is a new endowment created in
August 2011 by Shri K. K.Venugopal in the name of Shri M. K Nambyar.
In the academic year (2012-2013) the first M.K.Nambyar endowment lecture was delivered
by Mr. Michael Kirby, Former Justice of the High Court of Australia on The Necessity and
Limitations of Judicial Activism.
Prof. Marc Galanter and Prof. Martha Nussbaum have agreed to deliver the M K Nambyar
Endowment lectures of the years 2014 and 2015 respectively.

Library & Computer Centre

The NUJS LIBRARY & COMPUTER CENTRE strives to provide the support services much
needed by the academic communityfaculty, research scholars, PG& UG law students of the
University; as well as legal scholars, Jurists, advocates, activists and diverse cross section of
scholarly community at large who regularly come to visit the library for study and reference.
The Library occupies a central location in the academic block of the University in the ground
floor, mezzanine floor and the Computer Centre in the first floor. It provides seating
arrangement for approximately 300 users, with a separate group discussion room, apart from
main reading hall and additional reading room. The Library & Computer Centre hosts about
70 computers, thin clients &terminals in N-Computing system. The open access system
followed in the Library allows users to freely browse and pick up books of their choice
through the entire collection of books, current journals, newspapers & magazines, bound
volumes back issues of journals, reference collection and special collection like "UGC Career
& Counselling Cell".
The library collection is nearly about 20,000 titles and over 6,500 bound volumes of journals
including titles donated by renowned personalities and organizations and e-books. The library
presently subscribes to 100 print journals & magazines and 13 newspapers. It has in its
archives the complete sets of Antitrust Law Journals, Harvard Law Review, Yale Law
Journal, Fleet Street Report, Public Law and the Yearbook of Commercial Arbitration to
name a few.
The Library has access to a rich and varied collection of online resources and e-books. The
major databases the library subscribes to are SCC online, Manupatra, West Law India, EJurix, Hein Online, Lexis Nexis Academic, Kluwer Arbitration, JSTOR among others. The
databases can be accessed through the Campus LAN and Wi-Fi. Remote access to these
databases through EZ -Proxy platform is also available. A plethora of information services is
provided on regular basis like Current Awareness Service, Newspaper Clipping Service,
Notification of new arrivals and the like. The library is open 20 hours a day during semester,
and 24X7 before and during the examination period. Electronic surveillance system like
CCTV, tattle tape technology enabled detection system, as well as RFID enabled Self -Check
out and circulation system are in place. All the housekeeping activities of the library are
carried out through library automation software from a leading international provider in this
field. The online OPAC gives access to the entire bibliographic resources of the library.

Dr. P. Ishwara Bhat, M.A., LL.M., Ph.D. (Mysore) is currently the Vice Chancellor of the
West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata. Earlier he taught in the
University of Mysore from 1984 to November, 2011 and was Dean of Faculty of Law for
three terms and Acting Vice Chancellor for four months. He has specialization in
Constitutional Law. He was a Fulbright Nehru Visiting Professor in 2010 and involved in coteaching NPO Law at Columbus Law School of Catholic University of America, Washington
D.C. In 2009, he was a Visiting Professor at the Queen's University, Kingston, Canada to
handle a course on Comparative Legal Traditions. He researched on NPO Law and made
presentations in Trisakti University, Jakarta (2008) and Peking University, Beijing (2005)
and in ISTR regional conference at Bangkok (2006). He had attended Salzburg Seminar in
1997. He was recipient of the Shastri Visiting Research Fellowship in 1992 and researched
on comparative study of language rights in India and Canada in the Universities of York,
Toronto and Ottawa. He has delivered special lectures in various Indian universities and
national law schools. He has published several books and articles in national and international
journals. His books on Fundamental Rights and Law and Social Transformation in India have
been well received by the legal fraternity. In 2013, he has edited two major books on InterState and International Water Dispute, and Constitutionalism and Constitutional Pluralism.
He has handled five research projects on variety of subjects. His areas of interest include
Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, Law and Social Change, Water Law, Research
Methodology, World Trade Law, Intellectual Property Rights and NPO Law. He has drafted
Legislative Bills and University statutes.
Dr. Udai Raj Rai is, at present, the Human Rights Chair Professor in the University. He
holds the degrees of M.A. in history, LL.M. and PhD. in lawfrom London University under
the supervision of Professor Alan Gledhill. He also won the Commonwealth Scholarship for
three years from the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the U.K. which enabled him
to pursue his Ph.D. research at London University. By now he has over 44 years of teaching
experience and has taught at many institutions including Allahabad University, Punjab
University, Gorakhpur University where he was Professor, Head of the Department and Dean
of the Faculty for about two and a half decades, and at NLSIU Bangalore, where he was
Krishna Iyer Chair Professor of Public Law and Policy Choice for six years. He has research
publications and has guided research leading to Ph.D. degree. He has taken active interest in
the reform and improvement of legal education and with this end in view he has conducted
seminars, workshops and refresher courses. He has been associated with prominent agencies
engaged with this task, like the UGC and the Indian Law institute. He delivered the First
Delhi University Campus Law Centre Endowment Lectures in 1982. His specialisation is in
Public Law and has published a book with the title 'Fundamental Rights and their
Enforcement (PHI; Delhi). Another book with the title 'Constitutional Governance in India'
(Lexis Nexis; Delhi) is in the offing.
Dr. Manoi Kumar Sinha(currently on leave) is a Professor of Law at the NUJS, Kolkata, He
did his Doctorate in International Lawfrom Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and

LL.M. from the University of Nottingham. His areas of specializations are, Human Rights,
International Humanitarian and Refugee Law, International Criminal Law, International Law,
International Institutions and Constitutional Law. He has published extensively in thefield of
international law, international relations, constitutional law, international human rights,
humanitarian and refugee laws, in reputed Indian and International Law journals, He is
serving as member of the editorial boards of various reputed national and International
journals. Professor Sinha is also member of Research bodies of many universities in India
and abroad. He was offered prestigious visiting Professorship at the Raoul Wallenberg
Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, Lund, Sweden, for (2004-2005). He has
also received exception IDRC award from Canada In recognition of his services in promotion
of International Law in India. He has been delivering special lectures at various institutions
namely, law colleges In India and abroad, UGC Academic staff College, training program of
the ICRC, Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Environment and Forests. Some of his
recent authored and edited and co-edited books include International Criminal Law and
Human Rights (2010); International Law: Issues and Challenges (2009); International
Criminal Law: Issues and Challenges; (2009); Global Governance, Human Rights and
Development (2009). He is also currently the Director of the Indian Law Institute, Delhi.
Dr. Sreenivasulu N.S. joined NUJS in 2007 as Associate Professor. He has specialized in
Intellectual Property and Technology Laws. He has done his Ph.D. from University of
Mysore on Biotechnology and Patent Law. He has been teaching Trademark Law, Advanced
IP Law, Biotechnology Law and Human Rights and Development at the university. Before
joining NUJS, he was working at NLSIU, Bangalore and University of Mysore. Dr.
Sreenivasulu N.S. has wide range of publications to his credit, which include about 60
research articles and 16 books and monographs published from reputed national and
international publishing houses. He has successfully worked on UGC, MHRD, Larson and
Toubro and Microsoft funded research projects on IP Law, Technology law and Business
law, He has rendered consultancy services to MNCs and International Law firms and
universities on IP and Technology Laws, policy and regulatory issues. He has been guiding
M.Phil. and Ph.D. candidates. He has delivered several invited talks on the invitation and
funding of UGC, MHRD, and such other agencies and universities on intellectual property
and technology law. He is part of MHRD-UGC-CEC consortium on E-content development
in Law at UG and PG level. He is currently the Coordinator of the Ministry of HRD IP Chair
at NUJS.
Dr. TVGNS Sudhakar, currently an Associate Professor at NUJS, completed his graduation
in Economics (B.A.), as well as law (B.L.) and holds a LL.M. in Constitutional Law and
Administrative Law, Nagarjuna University. He pursued his M.Phil. and Ph.D. at Jawaharlal
Nehru University, New Delhi. His LL.M. dissertation was in International Law entitled "Role
of international Court of Justice in the Development of International Law." His M.Phil.
dissertation was in International Refugee Law, entitled "Contemporary Refugee Crisis and
the Application of Preventive Measures: An Overview. His doctoral thesis was entitled The
protection of human rights in non-international armed conflicts and the emerging
international criminal law." He is also involved in guiding of LL.B., LL.M. and Ph.D.

students at NUJS. He is the head/coordinator of the School of Public Law and Governance
(SPLG). As a part of the School activities, he organised number of conferences and
workshops. He is a member of the University Faculty Advisory Committee, member of
Academic Council, member of PG Committee, member of Doctoral Committee, member of
the Internal Quality Assurance Cell and also the faculty adviser to the Society of International
Law and Practice (SlLP).
Dr. A.K. Poddar, currently an Associate Professor at NUJS, has done specialisation in
International Environmental Law. His area of research in Ph.D. was on Conservation of
Natural Resources and International Law Regime. He edited three books, one on Forest
Laws and policies in India (2011), second is on Environment, Agriculture & Trade (2012) &
third is on International Environmental Issues and the Indias Stand (2013). The last book is
published in e-book & print form from California, USA. Dr. Poddar has authored two books
titled Environment, Irrigation & Development (2013) & Dispute Settlement Mechanism
under the International Environmental Law (2014). The last book is published in e-book &
print form from California, USA. Dr. Poddar is the founder and Chief Editor of two online
International Journals, they are International Journal of Law and Policy Review, 2012 [ISSN
(O) 2278-3156] and International Journal of Legal Studies and Research, 2012 [ISSN (O)
2278-4764]. He has also published numbers of good research articles and has been invited as
resource person on many workshop and seminars. Dr Poddar has done research work in the
water resource department on The draft model bill for the protection, conservation,
management and regulation of groundwater resources in the Planning Commission, (2011)
Govt. of India. He was also a member of the Sub Group (Under the Working Group on Water
Governance) on Legal issues related to Ground Water Management and regulation, including
the strengthening of the ground water regulatory authorities at the Centre and State. Planning
Commission, Govt. of India, Water Resources Department (2011).Dr. Poddar is the Head of
the School of Technology Law and Development (STLD). He is also the Chairperson of the
Intellectual property technology Law Society (IPTLS) & Society for the Protection and
Promotion of Environment (SPPE). At present he is the Faculty Advisor to Student Juridical
Association (SJA). He previously served as members of Academic Council and Standing
Committee of NUJS. He was acting Registrar of NUJS for about 11 months during 2010-11.
He teaches International Environmental Law, Water Law and Agricultural Law at NUJS. At
present he is guiding many Ph.D. candidates.
Dr. Anirban Mazumder, currently an Associate Professor at NUJS, is a graduate from

Calcutta University and has done his LL.B. from Burdwan University. He went on to do his
LL.M. from National Law School of India University, Bangalore and M Phil from National
University of Juridical Sciences, Calcutta. He has been awarded Ph.D. by National University
of Juridical Sciences, Calcutta. He specializes on Intellectual Property Law and Information
Technology Law and offers these subjects both in undergraduate and post graduate level. Dr.
Mazumder, a Fellow of the Max Plank Institute for Intellectual Property, Munich, has been a
Visiting Scholar at the Touro Law School, New York University, and Cardiff University. He
has also been a Cegla Scholar at the Tel Aviv University, Israel.

Dr. Sandeepa Bhat B. is an Associate Professor of Law at NUJS. He joined NUJS in July,
2007 after having worked as a Lecturer at the National Law School of India University,
Bangalore (2003-2005) and researching a major project on space law for ISRO (2005-2007).
He was the University topper and double gold medallist at University of Mysore in LL.M. He
was also the college topper and third rank holder at Mangalore University during LL.B. He
did his Ph.D. on The Legal Status of the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies -Implications of
the Concept of Common Heritage of Mankind. He is a member of the International Institute
of Space Law, France.
Dr. Bhat has edited two books on Space Law and has published more than twenty articles in
the journals of international and national repute, which include Journal of Space Law
(University of Mississippi), Proceedings of Colloquium on Law of Outer Space (American
Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics), Asian Journal of Air and Space Law, International
Journal of Law and Policy Review and Delhi Law Review. He has presented sixteen research
papers in the international and national conferences including the International Conference on
the Law of Outer Space (Jakarta, Indonesia), International Astronautical Congress,
International Conference on Contemporary Space Law Issues, Seventh International
Conference on Legal Regime of Sea, Antarctica, Air and Space, Aerospace Law Meet,
Thirty-sixth Annual Conference of Indian Society of International Law etc. He has also
delivered more than twenty invited lectures at Ministry of Textiles, Indian institute of Foreign
Trade, NLS Bangalore, NLU Odisha, KIIT University and several other academic institutions
at various parts of India. Dr. Bhat's areas of interest are Space Law, International Aviation
Law, International Trade Law, Public International Law and Medical Law and Ethics.
Dr. Kavita Singh is an Associate Professor at NUJS since December 2012. She joined NUJS
in 2004, before which she has taught at the Dept. of Law, University of North Bengal from
2002 and S.K. Acharaya Institute of Law, Kalyani University as lecturer among other places.
She has obtained LL.B., LUNA and Ph.D. degrees from University of North Bengal,
Department of Law. Her Ph.D. Thesis title is "Anti -Terrorism Law and Its Impact on Human
Rights in India: A Critical Appraisal (2005-2008)." She has worked in a research project
assigned by Bureau of Police Research and Development, Government of India, as cocoordinator (2006-2007). She is a member of the Doctoral Committee of NUJS, the Faculty
Advisory Committee of NUJS, the Quality Control Cell of NUJS and the All India Law

Teachers Congress. She was Member of the Academic Council of NUJS (2010-12). Dr.
Singh published book titled, "Human Rights and Terrorism Laws in India," (Central Law
Publication; 2010). She has published several articles and chapters in edited volumes of
books, national and international journals. She has organised, coordinated, presented papers
and participated In many international and national conferences. She has coordinated several
programmes and workshops. She is also a Visiting Faculty at the Central Detective Training
College, BPR&D, Government of India, Kolkata, Central Bureau of Investigation Training
Center, Kolkata, Police Training School, Barrakpore, West Bengal and West Bengal Judicial
Academy, Kolkata. Her research interests include Criminal Law, Criminology &
Victimology and Family Law.
Mr. Saurabh Bhattacharjee has been teaching Labour Law, Legal Methods and Law and
Poverty to undergraduate students. In addition, he has offered courses on Nuclear Law and
Human Rights and Poverty as part of diploma programmes offered by the University and
coordinates the NUJS Summer School Programme. Before joining this University, he taught
at the National Law University, Jodhpur for a short spell. Saurabh has also offered an elective
course as a visiting lecturer at the NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad. Saurabh
completed his LLM. at the University of Michigan Law School, Ann Arbor in 2009, where he
received the Grotius Fellowship and was awarded Certificates of Merit for outstanding
performance in International Human Rights Law and Comparative Fundamental Rights. Prior
to his stint at Ann Arbor, he had completed BA. BL. (Hons.) with numerous academic
honours from NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad in 2005. Saurabh has combined his
academic interest with activist work. He was a part of a team that submitted a report on the
National Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill 2011 to the Parliamentary
Standing Committee on Rural Development, Further, a number of his writings on
environmental law, law and development and nuclear law have been published in
international and national journals. He also contributed to the preparation of the Course
Content for the School of Law, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) New
Delhi.
Mr. Anirban Chakraborty did his LL.B. from Calcutta University in 2001 and LL.M. from
West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, in 2005. He was awarded the NaniV.
Palkhivala Gold Medal for overall best performance in LL.M. Thereafter he has been the
recipient of a Tuition Merit Scholarship from the Case Western Reserve University to pursue
a second LL.M. degree in the U.S. in 2007, but he declined for personal reasons. Recently he
was awarded a SUN Scholarship from the Central European University (CEU), Budapest,
Hungary, to participate in the course entitled "Teaching Law, Human Rights and Ethics".
Ms. Tilottama Raychaudhuri is associated with NUJ5, Kolkata since 2007, as Assistant
Professor (Law) and currently offers courses in Competition Law and the Law of Torts. She
has also offered courses on World Trade Law and Jurisprudence, at graduate and post
graduate levels. Tilottama graduated from Symbiosis Law College, Pune, with an LL.B.
degree where she was ranked 1st in college and 5th in Pune University. Prior to starting her

academic career, she worked as a legal professional in a company, as well as a law firm and
dealt with various arbitration, contract and Intellectual property law matters. In 2007,
Tilottama obtained her LL.M. degree from NUJS in the area of International Law and was
awarded the S. Gopalakrishnan Scholarship for Academic Excellence. Subsequently she
obtained her M.Phil. degree from NUJS in the area of World Trade Law. Currently, she is
pursuing her Ph.D. from National Law School of India University, Bangalore, in the
Regulation of Vertical Agreements by Competition Law. Tilottama has researched
extensively in competition law and has several publications on the same. She also has
publications in International Law, Trade Law and has participated and presented papers in
national and international conferences, the latest one being a paper titled "Inter-State Water
Disputes: Traditional Concerns, Modern Remedies" presented in the Annual Conference of
the Asian Law Institute (ASLI), held in Kuala Lumpur in the month of May, 2014.Tilottama
is the founder and Faculty Advisor of the Society for International Trade and Competition
(SITC), an academic society comprising of students and research scholars of NUJS.
Tilottama has been Faculty Advisor to the Moot Court Society and is currently also Faculty
Advisor to the Magazine Committee and the Literary & Debating Society at NUJS.
Mr. Shameek Sen is a graduate of the very first batch of NUJS. He pursued his LL.M. and
M.Phil. from NUJS. At present, in addition to his teaching responsibilities, he is also working
on his Doctoral Thesis. He was awarded the Nani Palkhivala Gold Medal for Academic
Excellence for securing the highest marks in LL.M. He joined as an Assistant Professor in
2007.
Sen specializes in the area of Public Laws. He offers compulsory courses on Constitutional
Law and an optional course on Media Law. In addition to teaching, he has several
publications on Public Law issues in national and international journals and books. He has
presented papers in several national and international conferences, the latest one being a
paper titled "Inter-State Water Disputes: Traditional Concerns, Modern Remedies" presented
in the Annual Conference of the Asian Law Institute (ASLI), held in Kuala Lumpur in the
month of May, 2014.
In addition to his academic activities, Sen is actively involved in his capacity as Faculty
Advisor to various committees in NUJS like the Legal Aid Society, the Law & Contemporary
Affairs Society and the Informal Discussion Group.
Apart from NUJS, Sen delivers lectures on different themes on Law and the Media in the
Statesman Print Journalism School, Kolkata.
Dr. Lovely Dasgupta is an Assistant Professor at NUJS. She has been teaching since the
year 2004 at NUJS. She was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the year 2006. She
teaches ContractLaw, Commercial Law and Sports Law to the LL.B. students and
Competition Law to the LL.M students. In the past she has also taught International Sale of
Goods to the LL.B. students. She has done her LL.M., M.Phil. and Ph.D. from NUJS. She has
published in both international and national peer reviewed journals. Herarea of research
interests includes Anti-Competitive Practices and Third World Approaches, Indian Legal
Education and the interface between Sports and Law.

Ms. Vaneeta Patnaik has been teaching Corporate Insolvency, Insurance, Mergers and
Acquisitions, Commercial Instruments, Banking, Valuation and Auction Laws at NUJS. She
has taught at both national and international universities. She did her dual Master's degree in
Management and Law from Bucerius Law School & WHU, Hamburg, Germany with full
academic scholarship. She is active in corporate training programs and has been a recipient
of grant from CII and UGC for research and programs. She has several international
publications and has been a speaker at various forums both national and international.
Mr. Niharendu Konar teaches Civil Procedure Code and Property Law. He has been a
guiding force in developing the Legal Aid Clinic at NUJS. He has groomed and continues to
groom the students towards their social responsibilities by conducting various workshops and
camps as part of the Legal Aid Clinic.
Mr. Sanjay Kumar has graduated in commerce and law and mastered in law from Banaras
Hindu University. He has taught law of taxation, direct taxes and indirect taxes to LL.M and
LL.B. He has also taught law of contract and corporate taxation. He has been the guest
faculty at Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Kolkata and International Management Institute,
Kolkata and the UGC Associate at Indian Institute of Advance study (IIAS), Shimla. He is
also the coordinator to PGDBL, DEABL and co-coordinator to PGDHR. He has also served
as the Warden and currently serving as Warden-in-Charge Hostel, NUJS. He is also the
faculty advisor to A/c, Mess Committee.
Dr. Bikramjit Dey has been teaching Legal History, Advanced Constitutional History and
Legal and Diplomatic History at NUJS. He has been a member of the Common Room of
Wolfson College, Oxford, 2002-03. Earlier than that he was a Commonwealth Scholar at
Wolfson College, Oxford 1998-2001, where he had completed his D.Phil. thesis in British
Commonwealth History, entitled "British Policy in Bengal, 1939-45," under the supervision
of Professor Judith Brown and Professor Tapan Raychaudhuri. He was also a recipient of the
Radhakrishnan Memorial Bequest Award, Charles Wallace (India)Trust Grant Belt Fund
Board of ManagementTravel Grant, Oxford University ChestTravel Grant and Wolfson
College Travel Grant. He was also an ICHRJunior Research Fellow at the Centre for
Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, where he had earlier
completed his M.Phil. He has got publications in national and international journal of repute.
Ms. Anupama Ghosal did her B.A. (Hons.) in Political Science from Jadavpur University
(1999). She completed Masters in International Relations from the same University in 2001.
Her area of specialization at the Masters level was South-East Asia. She is also the recipient
of the National Scholarship (under National Scholarship Scheme. Govt. of India) in 19992000, Hemendra Chandra Rakshit Memorial Award (1999), Jadavpur University Alumni
Annual Award (2000-2001) and Prithwish Chandra Chakraborty Silver Medal. Between 2002
and 2003, Ms. Ghosal has been associated as Guest Faculty in Shivnath Shastri College,
Gokhale Memorial Girls' College and Shri Shikshayatan College. She served as a full-time

lecturer at Kalyani Mahavidyalaya (College) from May 2003 to January 2005. From January
2005, she is a member of the faculty of NUJS, Kolkata. At present, she is teaching two
Compulsory Courses in Political Science to the First Year LL.B. students. She also teaches an
Optional Course In international Relations and Contemporary Global issues to the Fifth Year
LL.B. students as well as to the LL.M. students of NUJS and is also associated with teaching
in the Post Graduate Diploma in Human Rights. She is engaged in higher researches for the
Ph.D. degree in the Department of International Relations. Jadavpur University, Kolkata.
Anupama is at present the Coordinator of the School of Social Sciences, NUJS and is a
member of the University Staff Welfare Committee as well as the Faculty Advisor of the
Cultural Committee.
Ms. Ruchira Goswami teaches Sociology, Gender and Law, Human Rights Law and Law
and Social Change. As a British Chevening Scholar, she has a post graduate degree in Human
Rights from London School of Economics. She has been a visiting lecturer in International
Development Studies at the International Summer School, University of Oslo. She is also a
guest faculty in M.Phil. course in Women Studies at Jadavpur University, Calcutta and post
graduate course in Sociology of Crime and Deviance in Calcutta University. Her publications
are in the area of International Human Rights of Women, Intellectual Property and Women's
Rights and Right to Food in India She has participated in several international and national
workshops and conferences. Her areas of interest include human rights of women, gender and
law and women's movements. She regularly conducts human rights training programmes for
youth, women and personnel in governmental and voluntary associations. She is one of the
founder members of Gender and Law Association and one of the trustees of Anjali, a
voluntary organization based in Calcutta that works in the area of human rights and mental
health. She is a member of Nan Nirjatan Pratirodh Mancha - an activist feminist organization
in Calcutta and Maitree - a women's rights network and also associated with various human
rights organizations at the local and national level.
Ms. Jasmine Joseph (currently on Leave) teaches Interpretation of Statute, Election Law,
Legal Theory, Constitutional Law and Judicial review. Before joining WBNUJS, she was
working with the NGO Jananeethi and has a number of national and international
publications to her credit. She was also the Warden-in-Chief of the hostel.
Mr. Sarfaraz Ahmed Khan (currently on Leave) is currently pursuing Ph.D. on issues
relating to Cross-Border Human Trafficking between India and Bangladesh at the City
University of Hong Kong. Recently he was awarded Michigan Grotius Research Fellowship
to pursue his research at Michigan Law School as visiting scholar during March-May, 2013
under the guidance of legendary feminist Prof. Catharine MacKinnon. His area of interest
includes Criminal Justice Administration, Human Rights and Issues Relating to Human
Trafficking. At NUJS, he taught various courses to LL.B. and LL.M students, including
Criminal Procedure Code, Evidence Law and Human Trafficking. He did his LL.M. from
W.B. National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata and was associated with research,
teaching and training at NUJS. He was awarded British Chevening Scholarship and

completed his second LLM from University of Essex, UK in lntemational Human Rights
Law. He completed MPhil at NUJS on "Restorative Justice under The Criminal Justice
System In India: With Special Reference To Plea Bargaining And Compounding Measures.
He has written several books and articles. He has also developed numerousTraining Manuals
and Study Materials. Apart from teaching at NUJS, he was associated with several training
programmes for Police Officers, Prosecutors and Judges He had worked as a Consultant with
Apne Aap Women Worldwide, a well-known NGO working on Human Trafficking in India.
He has established SAKET, A Public Charitable Trust with the aim and objective of
empowering the underprivileged and deprived section of society through education.
Mr. Abhishek Mishra is a graduate of B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) (1999-2004), School of Law,
Devi Ahilya University, Indore and holds an LL.M. (International Business Law) from
National University of Singapore (NUS), 2007-08. He was invited by the International
Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia ("ICTY"), United Nations which convened a
two day conference, 'The Global Legacy of the ICTY", in The Hague on 15 and 16
November 2011. An article titled "Victims of War Crimes: A study of International legal
regime affording protections to human and humanity" been selected for publication by Indian
Society of Victimology in book named Victimology. The proposed publication house would
be Rutledge, India. He is visiting lecturer at West Bengal Judicial Academy, where he takes
classes for senior Judges and probationary judicial officers. Recently he organized and
moderated a one day symposium an Economic Offences His research paper was selected by
International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), United Nations, the
Hague, Netherlands, and was awarded an internship with ICTYfor a duration of-three
months. He had worked with Robert Wang and Woo, Singapore as Foreign Lawyer cum
Legal Executive. During his LL.M he interned at Lovells Lee and Lee, Singapore. He had
also worked as an Associate Trainee with Fox Mandal & Little, Bangalore.
Dr. Nandan Nawn (currently on leave) has been teaching two compulsory papers in
Economics since he has joined the University in 2001, besides offering two optional courses,
titled 'Law and Economics' and 'Ecology, Economics and Law'. He had completed his
Masters, M.Phil. and Ph.D. from Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, Jawaharlal
Nehru University, New Delhi. He had enjoyed fellowships from University Grants
Commission and Indian Council of Social Science Research for his M.Phil. and Ph.D. He had
been an associate at UGC Inter-university Centre for Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian
Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla.

Ms. Sujata Roy has completed her M.Phil. in Securities and Investment Laws from NUJS
and is currently pursuing Ph.D. in Securities Law. Her area of interest includes Securities and
investment laws, Corporate laws, Law of Insurance, Corporate finance laws, Foreign
investment laws etc. She offers compulsory and elective courses in her areas of interest to the
Undergraduate and Post Graduate students at NUJS. She has published articles in various
journals of national and international repute. She is also an adjunct/ visiting faculty (for
business laws) to some of the reputed B-schools based out of Kolkata and has widely
supported various managementtraining and upgradation programs run by various educational
institutes/ organisations (including NUJS) as an accomplished resource person as well as in
other capacities. Before joining NUJS she has completed her Master in Software Engineering
and has acquired IT skills. She is the Founder as well asthe FacultyAdvisor to the Society for
Securities Law and Financial Markets (SSLFM) at NUJS. She is also a member of All India
law Teachers Congress (AILTC). In addition, she is the Warden for Halls of Residence
(Girls)at NUJS and is also responsible for various advisory and other responsibilities related
to the Halls of Residence at NUJS.
Dr. M.P. Chengappa, Assistant Professor of Law, obtained his LL.B. degree (2006) from
University of Mangalore and LL.M. (2008) from University of Mysore with First Rank and
Gold Medal at the University. He got his Ph.D. in 2012. Prior to joining NUJS, he served as
Research Officer at the NLSIU, Bangalore. He also served as visiting faculty under the
Academic Exchange Programme at the Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden, Stockholm).
Mr. Sanjit Kr. Chakraborty has completed his B.A. (Law), LL.B. and LL.M. from
University of North Bengal and awarded the University Medal in the year 2005. He has
qualified UGC-NET, and presently pursuing Ph.D. Research in Law in the area of Intellectual
Property Law.He started his career of teaching law in the year 2005 and prior to joining
NUJS he served as Assistant Professor of Law at the School of Law, KIIT University,
Bhubaneswar. He has participated and presented research papers in a number of International
and National Seminars and Conferences, and published articles and research papers in
various Law Journals and Magazines.His areas of interest include Intellectual Property Law,
Constitutional Law and Energy Law.
Ms. Sampa Karmakar Singh joined NUJS as Assistant Professor (Law) in January, 2011.
Before joining NUJS as Assistant Professor she has worked as Research Assistant at NUJS.
Sampa did her Masters Degree (LL.M.) from NUJS and was awarded with the prestigious
Nani A. Palkhivala Memorial Gold Medal. She was also the recipient of Gopal Subramanium
Scholarship for securing 1st Rank in LL.M. 1st Year from NUJS. She did her LL.B. from
Burdwan University, West Bengal. She has done her graduation in English (Hons.). She has

Mr. Mahesh Menon was awarded the B.A. LL.B (Hons.) degree by the National University
of Advanced Legal Studies, Cochin, Kerala. He completed the LL.M. Degree in Human
Rights by the National Law School of India University, Bangalore and was awarded the Gold
Medal for the student graduating with the highest CGPA & the Nani Palkhivala Gold Medal
for the human rights stream topper. He was awarded the Linnaeus Palme Fellowship for
researching on Ground Water Law at KTH, Stockholm Sweden. He was also awarded the
title Best Junior Advocate at the Art of Advocacy All Kerala Moot Court Competition
Conducted by The Bar Council of Kerala, for identifying the best Junior Advocates in the
State of Kerala, 2010. He has practised as an advocate at the High Court of Kerala, Cochin
(2009 - 2011) and appeared and argued cases on matters relating to inter alia Constitutional
Law, Criminal Laws, Laws relating to Local Self Government Institutions, Forest Laws,
Environmental Laws and other Civil Laws. He has also worked as a Legal Officer, AsianAfrican Legal Consultative Organization, New Delhi (2013- 2014), wherein he researched

Mr. Nizamuddin Ahmad Siddiqui has obtained his B.A.LL.B. (AMU), PG Dip. (ISIL),
LL.M. (SAU). Before joining NUJS as an Assistant Professor (Law), he was teaching Public
International Law, Indian Constitutional Law and Code of Criminal Procedure at the
Department of Law, Aligarh Muslim University Murshidabad Centre. A recipient of South
Asian University Scholarship, he was awarded the V.K. Krishna Menon Memorial Gold
Medal by the Indian Society of International Law. He has presented papers in a number of
national and international conferences and worked on a number of projects in various
capacities. Currently he is involved with the University Grants Commission (UGC) EPathshala Project where he is preparing a module on Elimination of Racial Discrimination
for the Post Graduate Courses.
Ms. Mercy K. Khaute obtained her Bachelor of Arts, [B.A. (Hons)], from Loreto College,
Kolkata and her LL.B. and LL.M. from the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. Prior to
joining NUJS as an Assistant Professor, she was working in the same capacity with Law
Centre-1, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi from January, 2013. She had also worked as a
Law Officer in the Allahabad Bank in 2012 and as a junior advocate at Legal services under

Mr. Shouvik Kumar Guha is currently holding the post of Assistant Professor (Law) at
NUJS, Kolkata. He has completed his B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) from NUJS in 2010 and his LL.M.
from the same place in 2013. He has qualified in the UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) for
Lectureship held on June, 2012.He has been the recipient of the Nani Palkhivala Gold Medal
for securing the topmost rank in the LL.M. programme, 2011-13 at NUJS, the Gopal
Subramanium Scholarship, 2012-2013 for securing the topmost rank in the first year of the
LL.M. programme at NUJS, as well as the NUJS Student Scholarship (Merit-cum-Means)
during the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) programme in the academic years 2005-06 and 2009-2010 and
during the LL.M. programme in the academic year 2011-12.He has been a Guest Lecturer at

Mr. Faisal Fasih is currently working as Assistant Professor (Law) at NUJS, Kolkata. He
has obtained his LL.B degree from the University of Calcutta and completed LL.M from
NUJS. He was awarded Gopal Subramanium scholarship in LL.M. He has qualified the
National Eligibility Test (NET) for lectureship conducted by the University Grant
Commission (UGC) and was also awarded Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) by the UGC.
Presently, he is pursuing Ph.D. from NUJS. Before joining as an Assistant Professor, he
served NUJS in the capacity of research assistant for about three years and as a lecturer for
about ten months. He teaches criminal law, medicine and public health law, consumer law
and maritime law. He has been imparting trainings to professionals on various aspects of law.
Notable among them are a) training to police officers of various ranks and from various
states in the Calcutta Detective Training School b) trainings to members of consumer forum
c) trainings to para legal volunteers d) trainings of legal assistance course to young
professionals.
He has published papers in journals of international and national repute on several themes
Islamic banking, access to medicine, legal education, data protection, social security, right to
privacy, freedom of trade & commerce, law and morality, federalism, collective bargaining
and legal research. He has presented several papers in the international and national
conferences. Notable among them are: TRIPs and access to medicine, conflict management
through collective bargaining, Islamic finance, medical negligence, impact of globalization
on legal education, tenancy contract, honour killing, and implementation of human rights in
India. He got the best presentation award for paper on impact of TRIPs on access to medicine
in India in the national seminar on the intellectual property rights, organized by Greater
Kolkata College of Engineering and Management. He has been invited as a resource person
on various issues related to criminal law and Islamic law. He has organized and volunteered
several conferences, seminars and training programs. His areas of interest are Islamic law,
criminal law, forensic science, consumer law and maritime law.
Mr. Arun Krishnan is currently working as Assistant Professor (Law) at NUJS, Kolkata. He
obtained his BA LL.B from University of Calicut (2010), Kerala and LL.M from NALSAR
University of Law, Hyderabad (2012). He has specialized in International Trade Law. His
teaching and research interests include Jurisprudence and Regional Studies under
International Trade Law. Prior to joining WBNUJS, he was working with Symbiosis Law
School, Pune (2012-14) as Assistant Professor (Law) where he had taught Jurisprudence and
International Trade Law to postgraduates and Legal Philosophy and Refugee Law to the
undergraduates. He was the editor of Symbiosis contemporary Law Journal and Symbiosis
Student Law review for two volumes.
Mr. Arun Krishnan has presented papers at various national and international conferences and
has many publications to his credit. He was also involved in various national and
international research projects. He offers courses on Advanced Jurisprudence and Regional
Trade Agreements at WBJUJS.
Mr. Soumya Sahin passed Madhyamik and Higher Secondary Examinations from South
Point High School in 1998 and 2000 respectively securing a First Division with Distinction.

He completed his B.Sc. (Hons.) in Economics from Calcutta University (2004) and Masters
in Economics from Jadavpur University in 2007 and stood 3rd in the 1st class and received the
University medal for all-round performance. His area of specialization at the Master's level
was International Trade Theory and Environmental Economics. He was a regular member of
the quiz, debate and cricket teams at the school, college and university levels.
He worked in the UNCTAD-JUECON Programme, a project organized by the Department of
Economics, Jadavpur University under the UNCTAD-India-DFID-GOI Capacity Building
Programme. Between August 2008 and September 2010, he worked as a part time lecturer in
South City College and Muralidhar Girls College. He qualified the National Eligibility Test
(NET) in Economics. From March 2010, he worked as a Senior Research Fellow (U.G.C.) in
Jadavpur University, pursuing Ph.D. under the able guidance of Prof. Ambar Nath Ghoshon
on the Economics of Child Labour. During this period, he taught Advanced Macro Dynamics
at the Post-Graduation level in the same University as a teaching assistant. He has
publications on Indo-China Bilateral Trade and Role of Trade Policies in a Dynamic
Model of Child Labour. From January 6, 2014, he is working as an Assistant Professor in
Economics (contractual) in the WB NUJS, Kolkata. He has been teaching two compulsory
courses in Economics to second year students of five year LLB programme since he has
joined.
Mr. Kumarjit Ray specializes in company law, corporate finance and property law and
presently teaches Infrastructure Projects and Law of Corporate Finance. He has joined NUJS
as adjunct faculty in June 2014 having previously been whole time guest faculty at National
Law School of India University, Bangalore since October 2013. He has also taught on a
visiting basis at National Law University, Delhi. In addition to his teaching obligations,
Kumarjit has an independent law practice and is empanelled as a legal advisor to several
Indian banks.
Prior to commencing teaching, Kumarjit worked with AZB & Partners, Mumbai where he
was responsible for development of the banking and finance practice. His professional
experience also includes serving as a law officer at ICICI Bank Limited's corporate office in
Mumbai where he was responsible for legal affairs of the project finance business. Kumarjit
received his B.A. LL.B (Hons.) from NUJS in 2005.

Justice Altamas Kabir - The honourable former Chief Justice of India, Justice Altamas
Kabir, is currently an honorary professor at NUJS. Prior to serving as Chief Justice of India,
he served as Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court as well as Jharkhand High Court. He also
has the credit of being the Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority. He did
his LL.B. and MA from Calcutta University.

Dr. Andre Beteille - He is a sociologist who is known world-wide for his contribution to the
comparative study of social inequality. With Indian society as his focus, he has examined the
nature and types of inequality in human societies in general. He has lectured in many
universities and his books and papers have been widely appreciated In India and abroad. He
is a Corresponding Fellow of the British academy and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal
Anthropological Institute. He has held number of visiting academic appointments. Some of
such appointments are Simon Fellow at the University of Manchester, Commonwealth
Visiting Professor at the University of Cambridge and Visiting Professor at the London
School of Economics. Dr. Beteille is Chancellor, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong and
Chairman, Centre for the Study of Social Sciences, Kolkata. He was awarded the Padma
Bhusan by the President of India in 2005.
Prof. (Dr.) Maximilian Haedicke- He is the Counsel at Quinn Emanuel in the field of patent
litigation. He has published number of articles in various international journals. He has held
various other important positions in the field of law.
Pratap Bhanu Mehta is President, Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi. He is currently
an honorary Professor of the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences. He was
previously Visiting Professor of Government at Harvard University, NYU Law School and
University of Pennsylvania Law School. His areas of research include political theory,
constitutional law, society and politics in India, governance, political economy and
international affairs. Mehta had his higher education in Oxford University and Princeton
University. He is the recipient of the Malcolm S. Adishehshiah Award for distinguished
contribution to the Social Sciences, 2010. He is a prolific participant in public policy debates
and has been named as amongst India's leading opinion makers by several publications.

Prof. (Dr.) Harihar Bhattacharyya - He is a Professor of Political Science at the

Department of Political Science in the University of Burdwan, West Bengal. He has held
several important positions in various academic institutions both within and outside the
country. He has done his Ph.D. from London School of Economics and Political Science. He
has published articles in various national and international journals and has also presented

Arun K. Thiruvengadam - He is working as Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law at the

National University of Singapore. He obtained his JSD from the New York University School
of Law. He has held positions as a Visiting Faculty in several academic institutions. He has

published articles in several reputed international journals, books and has also presented
papers in several international conferences and seminars.
Dev Saif Gangjee - He is a lecturer at the London School of Economics and Political
Science. He has held position of a Visiting Professor in several important academic
institutions like the Fordham Law School. He has received several awards for his academic
contributions. He was a Rhodes Scholar and has published several articles in various
international journals. He has presented papers in various international seminars and
conferences.
Tarunabh Khaitan - He is a tutor in law at Christ Church, Oxford University. He has

received several awards for his academic contributions. He was a Rhodes Scholar and has
published several articles in various international journals of repute. He has also presented
papers in various international seminars and conferences. He has also held important
positions in several academic institutions of repute.
Professor Varrottil Umakanth, Assistant Professor of National University of Singapore, is

an Honorary Professor at the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences. He
specializes in corporate law and governance, mergers and acquisitions and cross-border
investments. While his work is generally comparative in nature, his particular focus is on
India. He has co-authored a book on corporate governance in Singapore, published articles in
international journals and founded theE. He is actively associated with the NUJS - IIM,
Shillong Summer School Program held at IIM, Shillong every year.

Dr. Surajlt C. Mukhopadhyay took charge as Registrar at West Bengal National University
of Juridical Sciences on March 1, 2013. Dr. Mukhopadhyay was educated at St. Xaviers
College, Calcutta, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, University of Oslo and
University of Leicester, UK. He was the founding member of the department of Sociology at
Burdwan University and taught for 15 long years before joining the Centre for Studies in

Social Sciences, Calcutta as Fellow in Sociology. In 2007, he took charge as Registrar at

CSSSC before his present assignment at NUJS.
Dr. Mukhopadhyay was awarded UGC JRF, the NORAD award by University of Oslo and
the Commonwealth Staff Scholarship by ACU, London. The Social Science Research
Council, New York, awarded him a Post Doctoral Fellowship and he was an Indian
Government nominee at the Maison des Sciences de l'homme, Paris.
A sociologist by training, he has published in national and international journals as well as
contributed several chapters in edited books. He was closely associated with large scale
surveys while at CSSSC on decentralization and minority affairs. Mukhopadhyay, apart from
being the Registrar, is also the Chief Warden of the Halls of Residence at NUJS and exofficio Secretary to all the deliberative bodies of NUJS.
Dr. R. Parameswaran has recently joined as the University Librarian at NUJS in May, 2014.
His work experience in library and allied fields has been varied like documentation and
information service, publication activities and research. He is keenly interested in application
of various technologies to reach the library services and resources to the users, 24x7.
Mr. Gautam Pal is the Accounts Officer at NUJS. He has completed B.Com.
(Hons.),M.Com., PGDBM (Equivalent to M.B.A.), and M.B.A. He has been a top rank
holder in the Graduation and Masters programmes. Mr. Pal was awarded National
Scholarship from Govt. of Indias Ministry of Education under the National Scholarship
Scheme. Mr. Pal started his professional career during the year 1994. Since then, he has been
holding important positions in Finance and Administration of various institutions Including
Bank, NBFC and three state universities.
Mr. Siddhartha Guha, the current Assistant Registrar (Administration) at NUJS, is currently
on leave.
Mr. Tapash Bhattacharya is currently the Assistant Registrar (Academic) at NUJS. He

obtained B.A. (Hons.) degree from S.A. Jaipuria Collage, Calcutta under Calcutta University
and M.A. from Punjab University. He also passed LL.B. from D.T. Law College, Ahmedabad
and LL.M. (Group-iii) from Sir L.A. Sah Law College, Ahmedabad under Gujarat University.
Mr. Bhattacharya joined Indian Air Force as an Education Instructor to teach the recruits of
the Indian Air Force (IAF) in 1987. He has almost 23 years of teaching, educational
administration, administrative and legal experience in various Training Establishments,
Command Head Quarters, Air Force Bases of IAF in various capacities before joining his
present assignment.

Ms. Tutu Mukherjee joined NUJS as the Asst. Librarian in December, 2002. Prior to this,
she had worked as Librarian at United Televisions and as Senior Education Counsellor at
British Council. Her Interests are Library & Information Management, Human Resource
