LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Lets cut to the chase: Bedford Isnt Sh*t.
Weve got more indie shops than Cambridge, an
amazing river and embankment, beautiful parks
plus theatres, pubs, bars, restaurants and music
venues. Bedford has a dynamic cultural scene
that belies its size, countless festivals and a
can-do attitude that has seen grassroots initiative
such as Bedfringe, Bedford Film Festival,
Bookfest, Jumble Trails, Humans of Bedford
and the Bedford Clanger grow and thrive.
But its not just bricks and mortar that
make a place great; its the people. On our
Facebook page and twitter we are constantly
encouraged by the positivity that Bedfordians
have for their town and the enthusiasm to
continue to make it a better place to live and
work. Ideas are shared, events championed,
help offered and support given not because
people have to, but because they want to. So
keep supporting the indie retailers, the gig
promoters, the theatre mangers, the festival
organisers, the bartenders, the restaurant
owners and all the other people who help make
our town brilliant and definitely not sh*t.

NEWS IN BRIE

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY
ROGANS BOOKS!

This month we were contacted by a reader Ana Ortega who wanted to share her passion for Rogans
Books to celebrate the shops first anniversary:
When I moved to Castle Road almost a year ago I immediately noted the shop across the road:
Rogans Books. From my vantage point I could see not only books but also a great mass of people.
It must be a book/coffee shop, I thought. The following day I met the person behind Rogans Books,
which is the genuine Rachael Rogan.
Over the months I have been a customer of Rogans Books I realised that it is much more than a
book shop. Rogans Books is a place where I have cried, laughed, created, run workshops, attended
a music concert, drunk wine, made my own butter, practised yoga, learnt about make-up, met lots of
interesting people and the list goes on. Oh, I buy books as well! Rogans Books is like the wardrobe
into Narnia. Once you open the door, you arrive in a magical world where everything is possible.
Rogans Books is not just a book shop, it is everything you want it to be.
I congratulate Rachael on the success of the shop, as this month it is the first anniversary of its opening. I
invite everybody that has not visited Rogans Books yet to do so, it is a great place full of adventures.

THE VINTAGE SUIT

HIRE COMPANY
LAUNCH

Sometimes even we are blown away by the brilliance of

Bedfordians. Take the new business, the Vintage Suit Hire
Company. Set up by local husband & wife duo Tom & Jessica
Answer, it offers vintage style suits for wedding hire (or a
made to measure service if you want a keeper).
The couple were inspired to set up the business after they
struggled to find a ready to wear suit that suited their own style
for their wedding in 2011: We wanted our wedding to be a
day that reflected our own tastes for all things vintage, retro
and unique, said Jessica. We found that the bridal market
was huge and varied, but the groom market was pretty limited
for fashion options and Tom struggled to find the right suit in a
sea of morning suits and dark coloured lounge suits. We knew
then that we wanted to make an alternative style of suit readily
accessible for the wedding market, and also to create a service
which gave grooms the opportunity to show their creativity and
style, equal to that which brides receive.
The companys emphasis is on luxury, but not exclusivity
with hire at 85 and a full made to measure service at 260.

UNIQUE BEDFORD:
THE BARBER CAVE

UNIQUE BE

DFORD

Brothers-in-law Steve Curd and Rob Acheson have recently transformed a

neglected unit on Roff Avenue into a thriving barber shop. Originally from
London, Steve has been barbering in Northamptonshire for the last 10 years.
While Rob has lived in Bedford for 15 years, Steve has recently located here
and inspired the duo to open a shop. The Barber Cave opened this summer
in Black Tom and business has been brisk ever since. Were really pleased,
its even better than we expected, said Steve. The residents have been so
supportive and theres a real community spirit in the area. During the really
heavy rain this summer we received a call from a neighbour at 10pm to let us
know that the shop was flooding. How nice is that?!
The upcycled aesthetic of the shop may be up-to-the-minute modern,
but the ethos is based on that of an old-fashioned barbers. We want to
make a visit to the Barber Cave an experience, said Rob. Great haircuts,
male grooming (including a sunbed) and cold beers for our customers.

INDEPENDENT FINE JEWELLERY

DESIGNER PANOUI CELEBRATE
THEIR FIRST YEAR IN BUSINESS

MONDAY NIGHT IS QUIZ NIGHT AT

Alternating between Steves Brain Taxer or

The all new, exciting Smartphone quiz!

Congratulations to yet another Bedford indie retailer celebrating their anniversary this
month: epanoui. We asked owner Hannah Paine to describe the whirlwind of a year
that shes had: Im delighted to be celebrating such a successful first year since the
opening of thepanoui shop and studio on Mill Street, Bedford. panoui literally means
to blossom, grow and to flourish, and the last year has seen us do just that.
Running a business today is tough, especially for a small independent shop - panoui
is a business I created and built entirely myself so it is something Im extremely proud
of. It has been a lot of hard work, but Im so passionate about what I do Ive honestly
enjoyed every second of it.
From the panoui shop and studio Im able to design and create my own fine
jewellery collection which has gone from strength to strength, selling both from the
shop and from our website. We have even grown quite a celebrity following! In addition
to our jewellery we also source a wide range of home wares, beauty products and other
artisan gifts. Its amazing that Im now able to support other local and UK artists by
stocking their goods.
It is wonderful to have seen a rise in independent shops and restaurants in Bedford
recently, and its really great to see such a positive community spirit and show of support
between all the local businesses. Theres a real sense of camaraderie on our corner of Mill
Street that has really helped make the last year such an enjoyable journey.
Id like to thank everyone who has paid us a visit this year and I look forward to
celebrating even greater success in the years to come.

PAVILION IN GOOD FOOD GUIDE

Congratulations to Emma Garrett and the Pavilion in the Park team on the news that they have been included in the Waitrose
Good Food Guide 2017. Since 1951 the Good Food Guide has been the UKs best-selling restaurant guide, so they know a thing
or two about eateries. The Pavilion has been recommended by the Guides food-loving readers and we couldnt agree more. If
you havent already tried their great food, been to a Supper Club or stopped by for a coffee, what are you waiting for?

Bedfords bookworms are in for a treat at the end of the month as BookTastic Childrens Book Festival returns for its third year. Sponsored by Rogans Books, the event will
take place on the grounds of the Panacea Musuem on Newnham Road, Bedford and will feature a host of awesome authors, illuminating illustrators and wonderful workshops.

since its inception and weve developed some great partnerships with national publishers. This year the activities will take place over four days, so theres lots of
opportunities to take part and be inspired.
Younger readers will have the chance to meet authors and illustrators including Julia Jarman, David Litchfield, Lou Treleavan and Jo Empson while older
bibliophiles can hear from Helen Moss, Steve Cole, James Nichol and AF Harrold among others. Workshops will be hosted by Creative Days, Tatty Bumpkins,
Anne-Marie Stijelia, Jane Perrone, Frogs Chorus and Mique Moriuchi among others.

ON MY RADIO

From the end of September, The Bedford Clanger will not

only be available in print, but well also be on the airwaves.
Every Tuesday from noon til 1pm, The Bedford Clanger
Presents will be broadcast on In2Beats radio (106.5FM).
Clanger editor Erica Roffe and online editor, Priya Gill will
host the hour-long show that will review and preview the
weeks events. Were so excited about this extension of
the Clanger brand, said Priya. Weve begun developing
more online content, so not only will it be great to connect
with listeners during the show, but were looking forward
to sharing the show on our website too. Its the perfect
opportunity to share our enthusiasm for Bedford with a
wider audience.
In2Beats was granted a community license in 2011,
the same year that the Clanger was launched. Since then,
both In2Beats and the Clanger have been dedicated to
showcasing the best of Bedford. The first Bedford Clanger
Presents show will be broadcast on Tuesday 27th September
and will feature an interview with Bedfordian upcycler and

BEDPOP FUN PALACES

ON SATURDAY 1ST AND SUNDAY 2ND OCTOBER, THE BEDPOP FUN PALACES ARE
RETURNING TO BEDFORD, ONCE AGAIN BRINGING A MARVELLOUS MASH-UP OF ART,
SCIENCE AND CULTURE TO EIGHT TOWN-CENTRE VENUES. ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE IS
WELCOME, SO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT WHATS IN STORE WITH OUR HANDY GUIDE:

What is a Fun Palace?

Fun Palaces its a nationwide initiative to encourage hands-on experiences in art, science and culture. On the first weekend of October,
hundreds of Fun Palaces will simultaneously pop up in venues throughout the UK including Bedford - offering free activities to people
of all ages. Originally conceived by theatre director Joan Littlewood and the architect Cedric Price in 1961, it was their dream to create a
space where people in the community could come together to celebrate arts, science and culture. Their original blueprint said:
Choose what you want to do or watch someone else doing it. Learn how to handle tools, paint, babies, machinery, or just listen to your
favourite tune. Dance, talk or be lifted up to where you can see how other people make things work. Sit out over space with a drink and tune
in to whats happening elsewhere in the city. Try starting a riot or beginning a painting or just lie back and stare at the sky.
Where can I find the BedPop Fun Palaces?
This October there will be eight Fun Palaces popping up in Bedford. You can find lots of exciting stuff going on at the Higgins, Bedford
Central Library, the Panacea Musuem, John Bunyan Museum, St Cuthberts Hall, Rogans Books and the John Bunyan Community Boat.
All the action takes place from 10am 5pm on Saturday and from 11am 4pm on Sunday.
How can I take part?
Every single event at the BedPop Fun Palaces is free to take part in, so come along to any (or all of the venues) over the weekend and
get stuck into whatever takes your fancy. Some events do need to be booked in advance, so pick up a copy of the BedPop Fun Palaces
programme, download a copy from bedpop.co.uk or head to Eventbrite.co.uk and search BedPop Fun Palaces for the full list of bookable
activities. Booking opens on 19th September.
Whats on?
There are dozens of FREE events to take part in this year, from engineering challenges to streetdance, immersive theatre to graffiti plus app
coding workshops and science demonstrations. Theres a floating Fun Palace hosted by artist Anne-Marie Stijelia aboard the John Bunyan
Community Boat, demonstrations of the Enigma machine at Bedford Central Library and an entire venue dedicated to Engineering at St
Cuthberts Hall. The Fun Palaces will be the first events to take place in the newly renovated Basement at the John Bunyan Museum. This
years list of collaborators includes Bletchley Park, Lockheed Martin, the Open University, Culture Challenge, Biddenham School and
Bedford BookFest among others.
Thanks to sponsorship from Colworth Park, You Can Book Me, the Harpur Trust and Culture Challenge, plus Arts Council funding
were able to offer even more events for free this year, said Erica. The success of last years Fun Palaces event drew families into
Bedford town centre to discover their hidden talents. With lots more to take part in, were certain to inspire even more of Bedfords
budding artists and scientists.
For more information visit bedpop.co.uk.
Events can be booked at Eventbrite.co.uk by searching BedPop Fun Palaces.
BedPop Fun Palaces programmes can be found at cultural venues, cafes, restaurants and libraries around Bedford.

YOUR BRAIN HATES YOU

DAWN STATE PRESENTS

On Thursday, October 20th, author Andrew Dart will join

Bedfords Skeptics in the Pub at the North End Social Club to
explain why he believes your brain hates you. It is the only
conclusion I can come to given how many tricks it will play
on you if you let it, says Andrew. My talk will cover just a
few of the many, many ways in which our brains try to deceive
us on an almost constant basis. Drawing on the extensive
psychological literature on these topics and presenting a number
of worrying, and often humorous, real world examples of what
happens when people fall for these tricks, this talk will look at
how our brains will not only show us things that arent there but
also remember things that never happened.

WHATS IN
THE ROCK
LARDER ?

Rock Larder is a new online directory set up

by local designer and Clanger contributor
Lloyd Lugsden. The website collates different
music and food related products, from Iron
Maiden Beer to Alex Jamess cheeses. Lloyd
as a massive music fan and a bit of a foodie
too (well, everyone eats and most people like
music) and noticed the increasing number of
artists who put their name to food or drink
products. Sometimes the juxtapositions are
quite amusing, such as Marky Ramones
Pasta sauce. The website also lists various
kitchenalia (Joy Division oven mitts, a product
inspired by a Half Man Half Biscuit song),
recipe books (Kelis is a qualified chef) plus
recipes collected from interviews with various
bands over the years. The site is great for
gifts for music fans and daft uncles alike.
Eventually Rock Larder would like to hook up
various artists and food and drink manufacturers for exclusive products, a couple of which
are already in the pipeline...
Check rocklarder.com and follow Twitter &
Facebook for the latest news and products

Meatcure is a vibrant, happening place. It feels young, almost skittish and the excitement is palpable. The dcor is chic industrial warehouse and you cant help feeling
Bedford has been blessed, as though by a southern Baptist minister, with its very own
slice of Camden Americana. Those working the tables are forever smiling and Kieran
was there to serve, to make sure our experience didnt want for anything. We study the
menu and order the drinks. Bywater junior, the milkshake connoisseur known from
Florida to Folkestone for her discerning palate, goes for the chocolate rather than the
peanut butter while Im stumped by the variety of beers on offer: Camden drafts, US
bottles and cans, and an Icelandic beer which is 6%. Kieran talks me through those hes
tasted and we decide Dixie fits the bill. Its crisp and clean, a New Orleans beer that
wouldnt offend anyone. The milkshake is described as smooth and velvety and meets
with wholehearted approval.
Its finished just before the burgers arrive - a classic parenting error - as now Evas going
to face an uphill struggle to finish her Raging Bull. Ive an inch of beer left in the glass when
Smokey and the Bandit descends and Kieran, as attentive as ever, recommends a can of
Huber and who am I to disagree. We have side orders of battered onion rings and coleslaw
to go with our burgers and each is served in white tin dishes, a clever little novelty that
smacks of cowboys out on the range. Each burger comes with hot skinny fries and its own
unique topping. Theres enough to keep those who dont eat meat happy and variety enough
- with Colonel Parkers Tribute and Towering Inferno - for those who do to keep coming
back. Eating at Meatcure is a serious business and we fall silent as we plough our way
through the dishes. A friend described the beef patties as better than Byrons, and as good as
those served in Herd, but that all depends on what you expect a patty to be.
To finish we had a sundae and Kieran offered to make us a half chocolate oreo and
half peanut butter one. The peanut butter one had pieces of a Snicker in and the combination worked beautifully. I finished my Huber, which has more of a malty flavour,
similar to a Michelob, and congratulated Kieran on a job well done. Well be back for
Sunday brunch they serve pancakes and cocktails for Christs sake and between
5pm and 7pm when you can get two cans for the price of one, which really is a steal.
Also, kids eat free on Mondays. Who can argue with that?

JAH WOBBLE & THE INVADERS

OF THE HEART + GUESTS
Bedford Esquires @ Friday 14th October,
Doors At 8pm
For around three decades, Jah Wobble has ploughed
his own furrow as a prolific solo artist, as well as
becoming a well-respected session musician, with a
genuine passion for Eastern and Global music. He has
worked with a diverse range of musicians, including
Baaba Maal, Bjork, Primal Scream, Brian Eno, Sinead
OConnor, Julianne Regan, Dolores ORiordan, Holgat
Czukay, The Edge and Chaka Demus & Pliers.
The man born John Wardle began his musical journey
when he met John Lydon and Sid Vicious in 1973. Lydon
asked JW to join Public Image Limited (aka PiL) in
spring 1978. Wardles distinctive low end bass became
the backbone of PiLs pioneering sound.
Jah Wobbles Invaders of the Heart released their debut album in 1990 and received a Mercury
Music Prize nomination in 1991 for the Rising above bedlam album.

THE SHIMMER BAND + GUESTS

Holy Molys @ Bedford Esquires, Friday 21st October,
doors at 8pm
The Shimmer Band opened for Bedford faves The Wholls
at this summers Great Escape festival and thats where
they caught the eye of the Pad Presents promoters. From
the moment they hit the stage The Shimmer Band deliver
the finished article and look like they are already ready for
the big time. Following on from the anthemic BBC6Music
favourite FREEDOM, the Bristol-based band returned
with their third single SUNKICK which was out on
Komplex Recordings August 12th.

Having already played storming sets this year at

The Great Escape and Isle of Wight festivals, with The
Stereophonics and The Vaccines at Cardiff City Football
Stadium, and huge performances at the Reading and Leeds
Festival, The Shimmer Band embark on a massive UK tour
this autumn which takes in Bedford on route.
The Shimmer Band play the intimate surroundings of Holy
Molys for their first visit to Bedford Esquires with special
guest support tbc. Tickets are on sale priced 7 advance
from Seetickets online and in person from Esquires bar,
Planet Boutique and Marios hair Design in Kempston.

Bedford DJ and producer D-DOTs (Patrick Denny) released

his latest single Gyal is Dead this summer and its an absolute
corker. The tropical bass beat carries an aesthetic apparent over
much of D-DOTs music: a fun but simple party sound with
injections of Tropical sounds and influences. My approach is
similar to Quentin Tarrantios mindset to music; not doing it for
any deeper meaning, but just because it sounds or looks cool,
said Patrick. For me, Gyal is Dead was the first record I
achieved with this and Ive been blown away by the reaction its
had from DJs so far. So well received in fact, that Diplo played
it on his Radio 1 show. To hear my music played on Radio 1
was incredible, said Patrick. Ive felt it coming for a while, but what really took me back was
that it was played by Diplo (founder of Major Lazer) who is an international megastar and an idol
of mine since I was young. I actually ended up in the DJ booth with him at Bestival and met him
afterwards which was very surreal! Gyal is Dead was released on New York label Hot Mom
USA and Patrick has more new music coming soon and is booking a US tour this Autumn with a
European leg to follow. Look out for him playing in Bedford while you can!

OPERATION CRUCIBLE

Tuesday 18th October, 7.30pm. Tickets: 12 (concessions 10)

Set against the backdrop of the Sheffield Blitz, Operation Crucible is the story of four ordinary men
in extraordinary times.
On the 12 December 1940, more than six hundred people lost their lives in over seven hours of
continuous bombing by Germanys Luftwaffe. At 11.44pm on the night of the raid, a single bomb
reduced the Marples Hotel to just fifteen feet of rubble. Only one of the ten compartments in the
hotels cellars withstood the blast. Within it, trapped, were four men. This is their story, from
beginning to end.

THE PLACE THEATRE

THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING
Friday 14th October 7.30pm. Tickets: 10 (8.50 concessions)
We spoke to writer & director Dan Coleman to find out more about the
forthcoming production of the Man Who Would Be King:
Its the story of two ex-SAS who, having spent several years fighting
in Afghanistan, decide that theyre going to head up to a remote region of
northern Afghanistan, enslave the natives, and install themselves as kings.
Their plan works for a while until their army begins to turn on them.
Its based on Rudyard Kiplings first novel which he wrote in 1888
when he was just 22 years old. At that time he was working as a journalist in the North West of the British Raj what is now Pakistan. Its a story
about vaulted ambition and the sense of entitlement that embodied British
colonialism at that time.

Why did you choose to adapt this particular story?

We thought it was quite an interesting way of looking at the current situation in the Middle East. I adapted it in 2014 as British troops were pulling
out of combat roles in Afghanistan. One comparison between the current
state of affairs and Kiplings story is the way western adventurism creates chaos in its wake. The characters in Kiplings
story train Afghans to help keep themselves in power only to have that army turn on them when circumstances change.

JOIN OUR FRUITFUL GROUP

ON YOUR BIKE,
BEDFORD
By Lucy Bywater

BY JANE PERRONE @JANEPERRONE / PERRONE.BLOGS.COM

There is nothing sadder to me than the sight of a fruit tree, fully laden, but completely abandoned. When we moved into our house, the entire crop of
Victoria plums lay on the grass, untouched, because the previous owners didnt like fruit. In this era of scant resources and austerity measures, there
should be a way of making sure food like this doesnt go to waste. There are trees all over town at this time of year, covered in fruit that the owners
cant or wont harvest.
You can put fruit and veg on a table at your gate with a sign saying free, please take as one of my allotmenteering neighbours does with his excess
produce. If this is too haphazard, you may be glad to hear that Ive just revived a dormant Facebook group called Abundance Bedford, in the hope that
people will use it as a place to share their bounty. Ill be sharing tips on foraging - both in your garden and further afield - too. Ive been overwhelmed
with the response so far, with dozens of people joining the group, offering to share fruit and sharing useful information about where to find the best
hedgerow harvests this autumn. Please come and join us: were at facebook.com/groups/abundancebedford/. And Im hoping to organise a foraging
walk and meal in collaboration with the Bedford Pavilion in the spring; Ill bring you details in the Clanger once dates are confirmed.

PLAN TREES

If you dont have fruit trees in your garden but would like to, now is the time to start ordering bare root trees and soft fruit bushes for planting from
next month to March. Theres a cornucopia of options: but can you imagine how exciting it would be to plant a Beauty of Bedford, a dessert apple
bred just over 100 years ago in our very own town by long-gone local nursery Laxtons (about whom Ive written in this column before). You can buy
this and other Laxtons apples mail order from keepers-nursery.co.uk. Theres a full list of Bedford-bred apples, arranged according to harvest date,
online at https://is.gd/bedsapples. If you fancy growing some raspberries, check with allotment-holding friends - raspberry canes frequently need
thinning, so they may have some stock theyre glad to be shot of - its fine to replant, providing the canes are healthy and disease-free. Ditto rhubarb if plants are routinely bolting (in other words, flowering) each summer, they need dividing, so give your spares away and share the rhubarb love.

New years resolutions never make sense to me. Why struggle to

make a life change in the wretched dark days of January? Right
now is certainly a good time to begin the habit of cycling to work or
school instead of taking the car, while the weather is still really mild
and the dark afternoons arent yet upon us. And those outdoor days
of summer seem to give us the energy we need to carry on (or to
begin) a cycling habit. Maybe GBs amazing Olympic cyclists at Rio
can inspire a pedal to school
September 14th was National Cycle to Work day but it can of
course be any day. And whatever people tell you, Bedford is a pretty
good place to cycle: its flat, it has some good cycle routes in and
around (many quiet and pleasant), it has three independent cycle
shops plus several mobile repair mechanics, it has lots more cycle
racks than five years ago AND were on the National Cycle Route!
A critical mass of Bedfordians cycling is good for everyone the
more of us who cycle the safer we are on those roads and the more
infrastructure well see for cyclists. (Most of us dont cycle on the
pavements mowing down pedestrians, though a few of those sadly
seem to make quite an impression).
Bedford is not shit (this months Clanger theme) but, like many
British towns, it is polluted and diesel particles in particular are
shortening lives. If we are serious about improving air quality,
we need to be leaving the car behind whenever possible. And for
me, taking my bike has always been a win win. Admittedly I only
work a few streets from where I live, so my cycle commute is not
demanding but my bike gives me freedom, spontaneity, cycling is
practically free and makes me feel good. Also for reasonably short
distances, its way quicker than the car, door to door
If you want to equip yourself, Bedfords excellent local bike shops
will advise you, or just peruse the large bike section at auctioneers
Peacocks, where bargains are to be had if you dont mind then paying
a shop for repairs or adjustments to be sure its safe. If cycling is a
new habit for you, then a copy of the Highway Code or a Bikeability
course would be a good idea.
Theres loads of advice from ccnb.org.uk (well worth joining this
proactive local group); travelbedford.co.uk; sustrans.org.uk

BUY THE BEST: MADE IN BEDFORD EX

REDISCOVERING BEDFORD

By Darren Rose
Bedford has a wonderful mix of architecture which characterises the towns skyline, combining the old with the
new, and everything in between. Not everyone agrees on whether the buildings are pleasing to eye (I will make no
mention of the new footbridge) with the Borough Council Offices often cited as an eyesore. However, the brutalist
architecture of the building was built with the same aesthetic principles as the Barbican Centre in London. It has a
certain charm that contributes to the overall character of our town. If it was replaced with something less visionary
and ordinary, I think I would miss it.
However, this months issue of The Clanger is about fun places, and the Borough Council Offices doesnt quite fit
the brief.
So I decided to photograph another building that stands out from the crowd - the iconic pyramid of the Oasis
swimming pool. Located near the river, and obscured from a distance by trees, the Oasis pool is a bold statement. As
with the Borough Council Offices, Im pleased that its not a standard square box and it provides another example
of the wonderfully varied buildings we have in Bedford.
If you would like to see more of my images from Bedfordshire and beyond, then I can be found online.

We are so excited that the first Made in

Bedfords artists, artisans, producers
and makers. Therell be great locally

all that makes Bedford special under one
roof! Open 10am 4pm. Free entry.

THE LAST WORD

By Reverend Sonya J Wratten, Priest in Charge, All Saints, Queens Park

Ive never seen myself as someone who is very interested in flowers,

particularly when it comes to arranging them. Even though my place
of work is traditionally connected to using flora and fauna to celebrate
high days and holy days, for me, I just about manage to arrange a
bunch of lilies in a vase! I rather stand back in admiration at those
who have the skill and craft to turn the lilies of the fields into works
of art.
I have, however, started to become unexpectantly excited about our
forthcoming Harvest Festival at All Saints church, Queens Park. This
year we are plunging ourselves into celebrating Harvest in a big way
with a flower festival entitled Harvest of the World on Saturday 1st
October, 11-4pm.
Our aim is to reflect something of the cultural diversity of our
church and parish with flower displays speaking of global themes and
stories. Even as a reluctant and unskilled flower arranger I feel excited
by this creative challenge. I like to think of faith in this way as well.
Faith is a creative challenge that we sometimes endeavour to speak of,
draw, paint and create in a myriad of different ways and God is to me,
is the creative source at the bedrock of such inspiration.
I hope you will come and visit our flower festival in a couple of
weeks and share with us in these creative, holy energies that give us
vibrancy and meaning to our lives.
