ST DIMITRIOS

OF

THESSALONIKA

St Dimitrios came from a noble family of the Roman Province of Macedonia.

Through this noble ancestry and through his own ability and Virtue he rose to a high
military position under Emperor/Caesar Galerius Maximian, who co- ruled the Eastern
sector of the great Roman Empire , while Caesar Augustus, Diocletian, ruled the
Western sector.
Despite St Dimitrios significant social status in the pagan Roman Empire, he remained
fervent in his Faith and Works.
He encouraged many other Christians to endure the prevailing religious persecution and
by his own good example and secret teachings, he converte innumerable pagans to
Faith in Christ Jesus.
After one of his campaigns, Emperor Maximian returned to Thessaloniki - his capital city and ordered games to be organised and sacrifices to be offered to the pagan gods to
celebrate his triumphant return.
However, St Dimitrios was denounced by certain pagans who were envious of his
successes in battle, whereupon he was arrested and imprisoned.
One of St Dimitrios visitors was a young Christian named Nestor, who asked him for his
Prayers and Blessings as he was about to challenge the popular giant of a man,
Lyaios (or Lyaeus), who was the reigning champion infamous for killing all his
opponents.
St Dimitrios offered fervent Prayers to God for the Protection and Victory of St Nestor
against the evil brute and then he gave the young gladiator his Blessings.
Against all expectations similar to the ancient young King David who had deafeated the
giant Philistine, Goliath St Nestor defeated and killed his opponent in the arena,
much to the shock and outrage of the Emperor, who immediately and unjustly,
ordered his arrest and imprisonment.
As soon as the enemies of St Dimitrios had informed Emperor Maximian that somehow he
had enabled St Nestor to defeat the Roman champion, St Nestor was dragged outside
the city and beheaded.
Several soldiers were sent to the prison where St Dimitri was held and they impaled him to
death with their spears.
St Lupos was the faithful servant of St Dimitrios, and he recorded everything that had
occurred. He had carefully preserved his beloved Masters blood-stained tunic and
signet right, which worked many Divine Miracles through the Intercessory Prayers of St
Dimitrios and St Lupos.
It soon came to pass that St Lupos was also arrested and beheaded for encouraging the
Faithful Christians and for his part in the conversion of many more pagans.
The Christians buried St Dimitrios and St Nestor next to each other in the public bath
house where St Dimitrios had been imprisoned and martyred.
During the 7th century a Miraculous Stream of fragrant Holy Myrrh began to emanate
from the tomb of St Dimitrios, which is the reason why he was entititled: Myrovlitis The Myrrh Gusher /Streamer. The tomb of St Dimitrios, which contains his Holy Relics
is located in the crypt of the Church of St Dimitrios in Thessalonika.
St Dimitrios is revered as the Patron Saint of Thessalonika - having intervened to save the
city over the years from invading foreigners various Slavic Nations, Bulgarians,
Arabs, Saracens, and others.
While well Commorated in the Greek Orthodox Church throughout the world, the memory
of the Great Holy Martyr, St Dimitrios the Myrrh-streamer of Thessalonika is also highly
venerated and Commemorated in the Russian Orthodox Church and all the other
Slavic Orthodox Churches.
May his memory be Eternal, and may St Dimitrios ceaselessly Intercede with our Lord and
Saviour, Jesus Christ, for the sake of our immortal souls and our Eternal Salvation.
