Encourage your child to listen to the sounds at the beginning of words and then write out the
words e.g. bag, hot, wet. These can start off being very simple three letter words and then
become more complicated. Read one of your favourite stories and pick out
a selection of simple words and sound them out.

Sort out a bag of common objects all starting with the same sound. e.g. bag, ball, book. Get
your child to feel in the bag, pull out an object and say the initial sound. With older children
choose objects with different sounds and get them to group them by their initial sound.

Bury some suitable objects in a sand tray. Ask your child to find them and tell
you the initial sounds.

Find a picture of a cat and a dog. Write out how the words are spelt c-a-t, d-o-g. Ask your
child to sound them out. Ask them to tell you the sound and the letter they start with.

Using some simple three letter words e.g. b-e-d, get your child to sound out the letters
as they appear in the word. Ask them to write down the letters in sequence.

Cut out a selection of letters and make some simple words with your child. Encourage
them to sound them out. You can find some letters to cut out on the following page.

Make up a box of simple words that could be used when they are writing or a box
of objects with the same initial sounds.

Play some simple word games using the sounds of the letters of the alphabet.
E.g. a is for., b is for ., c is for.

Make some cardboard letters. Put them into a bag. Ask your child to pull out one letter
at a time and see if they can make words with them.
