About Saputara
Saputara is a popular hill station municipality and city located in the Dang District in the
southern part of Gujarat. It is located in a plateau in the Dang forest area of the Sahyadri range,
at an altitude of 1,000 m. This well-planned hill station lies around 170 km from Surat, 80 km
from Nashik and 5 km from the border of Maharashtra.
The meaning of Saputara is Abode of Serpents and because of this there are several images
of snakes present on shores of the River Sarpagana that flows through the town. The tribal folks
here worship these images of snakes on special occasions like Holi.
Saputara is popular for the several gardens present here like Lake Garden, Step Garden and
Rose Garden. One of the most popular gardens in Saputara is the Step Garden. The unique
features of the Step Garden are the design and layout of the steps. Plants and flowerpots with
wooden work around it support the steps. There are facilities for visitors to stay here in the
numerous Forest Huts.
One of the popular attractions here is the Saputara Lake that abode several boat clubs, offering
facilities for boating. Other than sailing, the Sunset Point in the Lake offers a clear view of the
Saputara region. Just 52 km from Saputara is the Gira waterfalls, which is a popular tourist
destination.
Some of the popular places here include Nageshwar Mahadev Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The museum of Saputara is ideal for gathering knowledge on the Dang tribe. One of the
popular events celebrated here is the Dangs Darbar, which is a tribal festival celebrated before
Holi.
Once a private forest of the Maharaja of Vansda, the Vansda National Park covers an area of
24 square km. The national park consists of animals like tigers, leopards, python, four horned
antelope, pangolin, rusty spotted cats and even giant squirrels.
Located in the regions of Mahal, 60 km to the north of Dangs, is the Purna Sanctuary. It covers
a total land area of 160 square km and consists of wide varieties of wild animals. This wildlife
sanctuary belongs to the region of dense forest covers, located in the regions of the Western
Ghats.
The climatic conditions of Saputara are uniform all round the year and during the summers the
average temperature is 28o Celsius. The best time to visit this destination is between the
months of March and November.

There is a sunrise point which is a good steep walk up the mountain and the vehicle has to be
left at the foothill. You can enjoy nice breeze on the top and have a good view of valley on both
sides of Saputara. There is a sunset point also on the other end of Saputara, and an adjacent
Tableland which was overcrowded with vehicles and not such a pleasant experience. A
dilapidated museum rounds of everything which can be seen in Saputara. The emporiums and
a rope-way which we had wanted to experience, were shut and there is practically nothing to
shop for. If your intention is to relax in a place with pleasant weather and clean air, Saputara is
the place to go. 2 to 3 days of stay is enough.
Word of caution - Please carry your medicines as the only chemist shop was closed during our
stay." - Amitabh Gupta, Navi Mumbai, 2 months ago
Saputara sights
"Saputara is a quaint old holiday area or should I say new because it really isn't that old. In the
middle of nowhere, it is a one-horse town that won't suit the adventurous but is a haven for the
peace-seekers.
Where to stay: Lots of hotels in Saputara, all of them around the lake. Occupancy seemed low
even in May which is supposed to be high season. But I understood from my hotel manager that
occupancy is generally high in the peak season, so booking in advance is a good idea.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Saputara is in the Dang district of Gujarat. It used to be the
Page 4/13
village of the Dang adivasis, who were re-located to another area (quite close by actually) and
an artificial lake created in that area. The lake is the hotspot in Saputara. A huge lake, it nestles
next to a lovely garden, all enclosed by a fence. Next to one end of the lake is a small 'market'
consisting of a number of roadside stalls selling strawberries, nimbu pani and snacks. That's it.
That's Saputara. Nothing to do except boating or wandering around the quasi market, no real
sights to see and no activity of any kind. But I believe I had one of the most peaceful holidays in
Saputara. If you like to sit around doing nothing, watching the lake and wandering around in
beautiful greenery when the temperature goes down, then do visit this place. But definitely not
for the adventurous-minded.
Shopping: The only thing I could see worth shopping for was dried raisins which are cheaper
here than elsewhere. There is a 'shopping' area in the main market area which sells brickbracks that one might want to waste one's money on.
Advice: The jeep drivers will offer to show you the 'sights' of Saputara. Don't go unless you are
thoroughly bored with the day. Or the Rs.300 you earned illegally is burning a hole in your
pocket.
Another advice: Carry plenty of cash. There are no ATMs in Saputara nor are credit cards
accepted, so cash is necessary. Additionally, the jeep drivers charge you Rs.50 for a minute's
ride from your hotel to the bus stand and an exorbitant Rs.1000 for travel from Saputara to
Nashik.
Activities & things to do: Sunset point: Lovely. You will need transport as it is up an incline. This
is one of the 'sights' included in the sight-seeing tour that cost us Rs.300 (per jeep not per
person thank goodness!).
Ropeway: Not for the weak-hearted. There was a throng when we went there and we skipped it
but as it is close to Sunset point, you could do both together.
Boating: Great fun although you do nothing but get rowed around a lake that looks rather similar
whichever way the boat turns. Rs.20 per person for half an hour I think.
Temples: There are a few around there which are included in the sight-seeing tour.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: We went from Nashik - a two hour taxi journey.
Taxi journey costs around Rs.800 to Rs.1200 depending on your negotiating skills and the other
opportunities on the taxi drivers' horizon at that point of time. The taxi stand is near the bus
stand. If you are going to go to Nashik by train, ensure you let the rikshaw-driver know that you
want to go to the taxi stand near the bus-stop - CBD it is called I think. There are three taxistands in Nashik, so make sure you identify the right one. You can also go to Saputara by road
from Surat. There's a bus stand from Saputara from where you can get a bus to different places
including Nashik.
Page 5/13
Tip: Although there are a number of buses from Saputara to whatever destination you want to
get to, the buses are jam-packed and additionally, get delayed like nobody's business. So, go
well in advance if you have a connecting bus/train to catch and if you have some spare dough,
share a cab with other passengers to get to your destination." - Wanderlust, , May 31, 2008
Retreat to Saputara
"It is a scenic and serene place to spend a couple of days. The climate is cool till 11 in the
morning and after 3.30 in the noon. Lots of trees, cool breeze and uncrowded place.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: There are plenty of food stalls near the lake and some
restaurants on the road to Nashik. The rates are economic. The Kerala restaurant serves good
chicken dishes - each dish costs Rs 300, though.
Activities & things to do: The ropeway offers a spectacular view and costs ony Rs 40 per head.
Boating in the lake costs Rs 20 per head for 1/2 hour. The Gir waterfalls requires a long walk
over rocks to reach. The two wildlife sanctuaries were closed to vehicles due to wet and loose
roads. The tribal museum was educative.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: From Kalyan you have to go via Shahpur &
Igatpuri to reach Nashik. From there you take the road to Vani. Nashik to Saputara is 85 Kms/
100 minutes. Saputara can also be reached from Sylvassa 150 kms/ 2. 1/2 hours. Hotels are
exorbitant. One days stay with food for a family of four will be 4000 to 5000 rupees per day
(Diwali period). Scout for the smaller hotels. I recommend Hotel Vaishali." - Sam George,
