Olympic Games

Basketball was introduced as an

Olympic sport in Berlin 1936. From
the beginning it was dominated by
the USA National Team, which won
the first seven golden medals. NBA players weren't allow to
participate in the Olympic Games until 1992 when Barcelona was
the witness of the best group of players ever to play in the same
team, the original and incomparable "Dream Team" of Michael
Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley and the list
goes on. USA has won 14 of a total 18 golden medals.
When the 1896 Olympic Games in Athens was held, Basketball
was not yet included as an official sport; as well as in the
succeeding
1900
Olympic
Games
held
in
Paris.
Basketball appeared at the 1904 Summer Olympics for the first
time, as a demonstration sport. Whilst in 1904 Olympic Games in
St. Louis, Basketball was included as an official sport; noticeably
the USA won all the medals. But after the 1904 Olympic Games,
Basketball was not played again; Basketball was then included in
1936 Olympic Games in Berlin up to the succeeding Olympic
Games being held.
The popularity of women's basketball grew steadily around the
world for decades. By the 1970s the sport had attracted the
notice the International Olympic Committee, which added
women's basketball as an official sport of the Olympic Games in
1976. Throughout the 1970s, funding for (and interest in)
women's basketball began to dramatically increase as schools
receiving federal funding began to come into compliance with
new laws mandating a lack of discrimination based on sex.

Southeast Asian Games

The Southeast Asian Games (also known as the SEA Games), is a
biennial multi-sport event involving participants from the current
11 countries of Southeast Asia. The games is under regulation of
the Southeast Asian Games Federation with supervision by the
International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Olympic Council of
Asia. Basketball has been a Southeast Asian Games sport since

the 1977 edition, with an exception in 2005 when the host

country, the Philippines, was suspended by the International
Basketball Federation, and in 2009 when the host country, Laos,
did not include the sport due to lack of facilities. The Philippines
have won all of the men's tournaments when the sport was
played except for 1989 when Malaysia won in a great upset at
home. The Malaysians, meanwhile, won 13 of the 17 women's
events, including the most recent one in 2015.
