Queen Elizabeth Class (QEC) Aircraft Carriers

HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales

The new QEC carriersthe Royal Navys largest warshipsare

the worlds first fully electrically propelled aircraft carriers.
At three times the displacement of the Invincible Class they
replace, they represent a step change in size and capability.
Their propulsion system is consistent with a growing trend
among the worlds leading navies to use GEs electric power
and propulsion technology.
Our scope
GE supplies all the major elements of the
Integrated Full Electric Propulsion (IFEP)
system as well as the overall electrical
system design. It comprises electrical
power generation, propulsion and
power management systems on the ship
including the following components:
4 x 11 kV HV switchboards
2 x 35 MWe generators (driven by a

of survivability. They are expected to
consume no more fuel during typical
routine operations, the much smaller
(22,000 ton) predecessor Invincible Class
carriers.
The all-electrical power and propulsion
approach improves survivability by
permitting geographical separation
within the ship of the main components
such as the gas turbine alternators,
diesel generators and motors. Power
generation and propulsion equipment
is distributed across several watertight
compartments and not concentrated
into a single machinery space or small
number of spaces. In addition, gas turbine
alternators can be placed relatively
high up in the ship to reduce the internal
volume required for large uptakes and
downtakes.

The electrical power reserve of the

Propulsion System (PTO/PTI)

A PTO generation solution not only utilizes surplus power from

the propulsion engines but also helps operate them at a more
efficient point. The PTI mode is an economical solution to
increase the power and efficiency of propulsion for any kind of
vessel, such as converting energy from the waste heat recovery
system of a main engine into electric power. This additional
power is used in the electric motor installed on the main shaft
line to increase the vessels speed. It can also be connected
to the gearbox on a medium-speed main engine propulsion
system. PTI mode can also be used with the main engine declutched, as an auxiliary propulsion system in case of main
engine maintenance or emergency.
Solution & Scope
Typical scope includes a generation
system delivering low voltage
electrical power to main switchboards.
Completely reversible, it can also be
used in motor mode (PTI).
Individual drive trains include an Active
Front End (AFE) converter. According
to network voltage level, it can be
connected directly to the grid or via
a step-down transformer. It uses an
AFE configuration and pulse width
modulated (PWM) filter to achieve line
current harmonic content within marine
standard class limits. The PWM machine
bridge feeds a standard squirrel-cage
induction motor directly-mounted on
the shaft or connected to the shaft via
a gearbox.

Marine Gas Turbine-Generator Sets

GE offers marine gas turbine-generator sets for electric

drive propulsion of military and commercial ships. Known
for their excellent efficiency, reliability, maintainability, and
performance, ourLM500, LM2500, LM2500+, LM2500+G4
and LM6000 marine gas turbines can be coupled with an
electric generator to create compact, lightweight gas
turbine-generator sets for a variety of marine applications.
Solution & Scope
GEs marine gas turbine-generator sets
offer excellent solutions for military
applications in which electric drive is
the propulsion system of choice. Ten
cruise ships are in service that use GEs
LM2500+ gas turbine-generator sets
as the total propulsion and on-board
energy system.
Benefits
Power density. One of the major
advantages of using gas turbinegenerator sets is that they are
compact, and occupy a smaller
footprint than alternative forms of
on-board power generation.
Availability/Reliability. GE marine
gas turbines are known for their
extremely high reliability, greater
than 99% and their also very high
availability, greater then 97%. (I cant
make this go back to the laft margin)
Flexible. GE furnishes the complete
gas turbine-generator set using
a generator from a manufacturer
acceptable to the customer.
Tested. The LM2500+ marine gas
turbine propulsion systems (turbine,
base and enclosure, plus lube oil
storage and conditioning assembly)
have completed evaluation and
acceptance testing by the U.S.
Navy for shock, vibration, EMI, and
electrical bonding, plus airborne and

107

structure-borne noise. In addition,

each production unit is tested by GE
and is available for customer witness.
Approved. The LM2500+ units
meet U.S. requirements for surface
combatant vessels and have been
granted type approval by ABS, DNV
and RINA.
GE marine gas turbines can be
coupled with generators for onboard
power generation. Two examples of
this are:
LM2500+ technology: The first
military application of the LM2500+
gas turbine-generator set is on the
Navys LHD 8 amphibious assault
ship. The same LM2500+ propulsion
configuration also will be used on
the LHA 7 and LHA 8 America class
amphibious assault ships.
LM6000 technology: While the
LM6000 gas turbine-generator
set has not yet been used for ship
propulsion, many design studies have
been performed showing its viability.
More than 700 of these units have
been built for industrial applications,
driving electric generators for utility
and industrial power generation. At
sea, 14 units are used aboard floating
production storage and offloading
vessels, accumulating more than
260,000 operating hours.

Expander-Compressor with Active

Magnetic Bearings
GEs Expander-Compressors with active magnetic bearings
(AMBs) were introduced to the natural gas process industries
in the early 1990s. Due to their space and weight advantages,
these reliable, oil-free units are the preferred solution for
offshore applications.
Solution & Scope
GEs Expander-Compressors with
active magnetic bearings offer
a simple, compact skid design;
oil-free operation that eliminates
contamination of the process fluid;
easy maintenance requirements; quick
startup particularly for remote control
applications; design to effectively
handle seal gas leak events; robust
forged casing to handle strong flange
loads typical of offshore and cryogenic
installation; package supported by an
anti-vibration mount (AVM) to isolate
the unit from vibrations of the deck
structure.

No fluid contamination. Oil-free

operation eliminates problems
resulting from contamination of the
process fluid and oil characteristics
degradation due process gas
contamination.
Robust casing design. Standard
GE forged casings guarantee an
intrinsically stiffer solution compared
to the traditional casted casings
used for these machines. This design,
together with the use of stiff NEMA
G10 heat barrier rings, guarantee a
better solution to satisfy the nozzles
loads requirement generated by
space constraints, vessel motion and
operating temperature.

Radial Bearings

The radial bearings use electromagnets placed on the stator

to create magnetic field that center the laminations.
Inductive position sensors installed near the electromagnets
allow the bearings to react to load variation, including
external disturbance forces.

Axial Bearing

The axial bearing is based on the same principles as the

radial bearings. The rotor is disk-mounted perpendicular to
the rotation axis and opposite the electromagnets. Position
sensors located at the shaft end can monitor any axial
position problems encountered.

Auxiliary
Bearings

Auxiliary bearing or landing bearings are typically

dry-lubricated ball bearings that hold the weight of the rotor
while the machine is off. These emergency backup bearings
are used in the event of AMB system failure.

Magnetic Control
Loop (PID)

The PID control establishes the bearing characteristics by

modifying the error signal with phase (damping) and gain
(stiffness), changing the strength of the electromagnetic
fields to help center the rotor.

Instruments

Instruments used on GEs AMB Expander-Compressor include:

RTD
Vibration positioning: V & W axis allow for 5-axis control
Axial positioning
Speed probe 1+ 4

Bearing Control
Panel

The bearing control cabinet must be located in a safe area.

It is also important to note the distance between the skid
and the control cabinet.

AMB Control
Panel

All signals are sent to the AMB control panel that houses the
processor, amplifiers, and monitoring system for the entire
AMB Expander-Compressor system. In the event of UPS
power failure, a backup power supply system can be
mounted inside or outside the AMB control panel, depending
on the overall power required by the system.

Sentinel LCT4 High Accuracy

Ultrasonic Flow Meter

A new addition to the Panametrics line of ultrasonic flow

meters, the Sentinel LCT4 is designed spe-cifically for high
accuracy measurement of crude oil, other liquid refined
hydrocarbon products, and other non-hydrocarbon liquids. It
delivers extremely reliable and repeatable results and meets
the strict performance requirements of OIML R117.
Solution & Scope
The LCT4 refines the high-reliability
characteristics of its predecessor,
the Sentinel LCT, into an aesthetically
designed, compact meter body with
integral cables, no extended buffers
and no junction boxes. It continues to
retain all advantages of ultrasonic flow
measurement, including no drifting
or required periodic calibration; no
pressure drop; no restriction in the pipe;
and no moving parts, filters or strainers.
Suitable applications include liquid
custody transfer measurement,
allocation measure-ment, pipeline
leak detection, crude oil and refined
products, and any critical liquid process
requiring high accuracy and precision.

199

Benefits
Viscosity independent. The LCT4
uses a number of proprietary
algorithms to reduce viscosity
effects, making it viscosity
independent. The meter retains
its accuracy over the whole range
between minimum and maximum
viscosity, using only one calibration
curve.
Real-time flow data. The Panaview
software, which facilitates
communication between the
Sentinel LCT4 and a PC, provides
real-time flow data, and it also can do
historical tracking and create a full
configuration audit trail.
No recalibration necessary. There
is no need for recalibration when
replacing transducers or electronics,
since that has been independently
tested by NMI as part of the OIML
certification.

Position

Advanced electronics. The Sentinel

LCT4 electronics have digital signal
processors that pack significant
power in a single package.
Electronics are integrated with
the flow cell body in a single unit,

Sentinel LNG extends the use of ultrasonic technology into
cryo-genic applications for measuring liquefied natural gas
(LNG) with outstanding performance, reliabil-ity and accuracy.
Other applications include custody transfer and marine
cargo verification.

i.e., the time the electronic signal is
converted into a transducer and the
time the acoustic signal travels inside
the transducer. By sending a pulse
and measuring its reflection at the
end of the transducer, the dead time
is measured in real time rather than
according to a preset value.
