The Credibility of The Old

Testament
Religion 2016
By Evan Acosta
The Old Testament is one of our greatest sources of information
on the Faith. Throughout it, we discover laws, important people,
events, and pastimes of our oldest ancestors. How we can rely on the
Old Testament to be completely true? Wasnt it written by humans,
who could easily have made an error or even lied to make things go
their way?
Well, to start, the Old Testament has passed the tests that prove
it to be historically accurate. There are many tests a document must
undergo in order for it to be proven as accurate, such as tests of
integrity and veracity. The Catholic Bible hasnt changed at all since it
was first written, all the way to today. This proves that all parts of the
Bible (including the Old Testament) pass the test of integrity. The test
of veracity is passed by the fact that the dates and people of the Bible
were real figures and match to what went on in the world thousands of
years ago.
The next reason we know the Old Testament to be credible is
because the Bible was inspired. This means that God helped the
authors who physically wrote the scriptures. God made sure that their
work was done exactly how He wanted it to be done, so that the
correct message would get to His people. There is even scripture in the
Bible saying that God was the one who truly authored it.
We also know the Old Testament to be reliable because many
times in the New Testament it is cited. Christ and His apostles often
say, Scripture says, and by this they are relating to the Old
Testament. Christ based His teachings on what was already written and
widely believed, not because He felt like it, but because it was
historical fact.
So we now see that the Old Testament is credible in multiple
different ways. It is proven to be historically reliable because it passed
all the test history could throw at it. It was inspired by God, so it cant
be faulty in any way, shape, or form. Finally, Christ and His apostles
mention it many times, showing that at that time people accepted the

Old Testament as fact. Without the Old Testament we wouldnt have a

very strong basis for our Faith, so we should study it and use it wisely.
