1.0 Introduction by Wayne Perkins, Stage Hypnotist

Greetings and welcome to the wonderful world of Professional Stage
Hypnotism. My name is Wayne Perkins and I will be your instructor
for these classes.
I have been hypnotizing people of over 25 years and I am going to
teach you the secrets and shortcuts involving stage hypnotism as well
as the basic fundamentals.
You can learn how to hypnotize other people to satisfy your curiosity,
create a new income stream or learn a new fulltime profession.
Regardless of your reason of downloading this class, I can help you
achieve success in a very short time.
The majority of stage hypnotists learned from reading a book and just
trying the stuff out for themselves. Books are great and they will help
you, however the quickest and easiest way is to get some great
instructions and dive right into the material.
Based upon the success habits of successful stage hypnotism
students, here is the single most important tip that I can give you...
Get off to a FAST and ORGANIZED start.
To really organize you class, please print this e-book and keep it in a
3-ring binder. You can then add articles or new routines to the
appropriate sections in the binder.
Make sure you write notes where you feel notes are appropriate.

Seek all the education you can. Learn to become the best
Professional Stage Hypnotist in the country.

1.1 The Basic Principles of Hypnosis

Question: What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis refers to the extraordinary power words have when
surrounded by our complete attention. When you are hypnotized you
are actually in a very focused state of concentration.
Many people think a hypnotized person is asleep because of all the
relaxation. But this is not true. As a person goes deeper and deeper
into hypnosis the concentration gets more and more pronounced.
Back in the 1970s a professional boxer named Ken Norton would
hypnotize himself before and while he was in the boxing ring. He
became the heavyweight champion of the world by using hypnosis for
concentration.
Dolly Parton, the country singer/song-writer used hypnosis to improve
her song writing ability.
Lilly Tomlin used hypnosis to become more creative in her comedy
writing and performing.
Sylvester Stallone used hypnosis to become more self-confident
when he was selling the idea of the "Rocky" movies to Hollywood
movie producers.
Many sports figures use hypnosis to help them improve their sports
performances.
Think of hypnosis as super concentration because that is exactly
what it is.

Conscious and subconscious mind---Question: What are the conscious mind and the subconscious mind?
Answer: The conscious mind is the part of the mind that we use to
analyze and make decisions regarding movement or activities to
engage in. We use our conscious mind all day long.
Question: What is the sub-conscious mind?
The sub-conscious mind is the part of the mind that is always active
but operates behind the scenes unless we call upon it through
meditation or hypnosis.
By operating behind the scenes I mean whenever we engage in an
automatic activity such as singing a song we "know by heart," drive a
car, run on a treadmill or listen to music we have heard over and over
again.
Those all would be conscious activities if we were learning the song
for the first time, learning how to drive for the first few times, getting
on a treadmill for the first time or listening carefully to a new song.
Our subconscious mind is like a computer. Once it is programmed it
works on its own. In order to change the activity you must change the
program
A hypnotist is successful to the degree he can temporarily change the
program, (with stage hypnosis) or permanently affect the program
through hypnotherapy.

1.2 Having Fun with Hypnosis

Hypnosis is fun. It is fun for the hypnotist and it is fun for the person
being hypnotized. It is also a great deal of fun for people watching
your performance.
Since most hypnotic inductions suggest relaxation of all of the muscle
groups, most of your hypnotic subjects, also known as hypnotees,
really enjoy the process.
Question 1.: Do people remember everything that happens to them
when they are hypnotized?
Answer: 1. People will remember everything that happens to them
when they are hypnotized, unless you instruct them to forget. Many
stage hypnotists like to tell them they will forget everything that
happened to them on stage.
The reason for this is because it will be proof to that individual that
he/she was really hypnotized as other people will ask that person
what happened, or why did you ask so strange when you were onstage?
It will also prove to that person's friends that something strange really
did happen.

When I hypnotize on stage, sometimes I ask for "amnesia" and

sometimes I don't.
Remember that whenever you are hypnotizing an individual, keep in
mind that they want to have fun and keep their interests and safety in
the forefront of your mind.
1.3 The Dangers of Hypnosis

When you hypnotize an individual or a group, you will be developing

a very deep rapport with that individual or group. You can count on
people following every suggestion you give them and following it to
the letter.
With that in mind, you need to give suggestions to people that will not
harm them physically or emotionally.
You would never want to hypnotize a stranger, lay that stranger
between two chairs with his head resting on one end and his feet
resting on the opposite chair and then walk across his/her stomach.
Many hypnotists still do that bit, and you have no idea if that person
just came out of stomach surgery or has a serious physical problem.
Always keep the safety and well being of the subject foremost in your
mine.

Question: What is so dangerous about hypnosis other than standing

on someone's stomach?
Answer: If you are taking a person back in time, for example, you
may trigger a very traumatic experience that doesn't lend itself to
entertainment. You NEVER want to suggest that a person is getting
an electric shock or that he is going to be physically burned.
Very suggestible subjects will not only feel the burns but also have
physical burns appear on their bodies.
There is no place for physical harm in a hypnotism show.
There are thousands of hypnosis phenomena you can produce that
are funny and will not harm anyone.
Question? What about removing the affects of the show?
Answer: You must always remove the affects of the show. If you
made the hypnotic subject hot or cold, happy or sad, or affected any
of the senses, you have to always make sure you suggest that all of
the affects will be removed when the subject awakens from hypnosis.
Otherwise the person may carry those affects into his conscious,
waking state of mind.
We will go into this further as you learn how to hypnotize your first
subjects.

1.4 Hypnosis Exercises

In order to get to know what hypnosis is really like I have created an

exercise especially for you. During the exercise I want you to read the
directions, memorize them and then follow the procedure.
Exercise: Try Hypnosis on for Size

Directions

1. Put on some soft music.

2. Light a candle and place it on a table in such a way that you will be
able to see the flickering flame of the candle at about eye level when
you are sitting comfortably in the chair.
3. Write down on a piece of paper that you want to focus on a
wonderful even that you experienced some time ago.
4. Then sit down in the chair, read the words that you just have
written and close your eyes when they begin to water or feel tired.
5. Listen to the music and think about that time in your life when you
had a very wonderful experience.

Memorize the steps above and then complete the exercise.

10

Feedback
After the exercise is over write down answers to these questions. You
can write them down on this page.

1. How did you feel during the exercise?

2. How did your eyes feel staring at the flickering flame?

3. Did you feel peaceful and relaxed during the exercise?

4. How vividly did you remember the experience of the past?

11

1.5 Summary
In this lesson you learned how to get a quick and organized start by
creating a binder for each lesson. You include your own personal
notes as you progress through the course.
You learned the hypnosis is focused concentration. It is not sleep.
Many movie and sports celebrities use hypnosis to improve their
performance.
In hypnosis you are communicating with your powerful subconscious
mind, which acts as a computer.
Although hypnosis is fun it can be dangerous. Make sure you always
give suggestions that will not cause any harm.
You will learn more about that in future lessons.
I wish you success in your future lesson!

How to Select Your First Hypnotic Subject

2.0: How to Select Your First

Hypnotic Subject
Questions: How do I select my very first subject? Why are you asking
me before I have learned how to hypnotize?
Answers: You need to begin thinking of whom you would like to
hypnotize. In the next lesson you will learn how to hypnotize and that
lesson is coming quick.
Who makes a good first subject?

Everyone wants to be hypnotized!

Yes, even your biggest skeptics want to be hypnotized. However, it's

best to find a willing subject first. Even though the temptation is to ask
a close friend or relative if they want to be hypnotized, I would wait
until you have had many successes under your belt.

Hypnosis is a very subjective state of mind. Belief in your abilities as

a hypnotist is the key. Your close friends may know that you are just
starting out and may fail only because they are trying too hard to
please you. Or they may fail because deep down inside, they don't
believe in your abilities to hypnotize.
On the other hand, complete strangers make the best hypnotic
subjects when starting out. If they have never been hypnotized
before, even if you have a little knowledge, you are way ahead of
them.

You begin by finding strangers in social clubs you may belong to, or
people that overhear you talking about hypnosis. Maybe you join a

15

night class at a community college and when someone asks you what
you do, you tell them, I am a hypnotist.
Usually the inquiring person will say, "I have never been hypnotized
before, will you hypnotize me?"
Then they will ask, "How much do you charge?"
Since you are new and don't really know how to hypnotize much less
fix something that is wrong with them, you respond with.
"I will work with you for free." I have a new technique I am trying out
and I need volunteers to work with until I feel more comfortable with
it."
"When would you like to be hypnotized?"
Then off you go. You have your first willing subject. Since you are not
going to charge the person for your service, you will have someone
who will work with you.
If you ever decide to become a professional hypnotist and charge
money for your services, you have someone that will praise your
services, because of the successful experience he had with you.

Keys to Success

Hypnosis involves credibility. Subjects have to believe you have the

skill to hypnotize.
Hypnosis involves belief. The person has to believe that something
will go on as a result of your personal intervention.
Hypnosis requires rapport with your subjects. They have to trust you
and like you. Even if they respond as a great hypnotic subject for
16

someone else, they may not respond to you because they don't like
you.
Because all of this is happening at a subconscious level, they may
not demonstrate the fact that they like or don't like you.

2.1 Exercise 1: Making a List and checking it Twice -------

Make a list of places you go to on a regular basis where you may

engage in conversation with a stranger.
Remember that strangers will make some of the best hypnotic
subjects because they have no reason to doubt your abilities.
Hypnotizing personal friends will work much better once you establish
a reputation as a hypnotist.
Along side the list of places you may find your first hypnotic subject,
include names of people you meet that will be interested in becoming
your first hypnotic subjects.
Make a list of places you will find your first hypnotic subject and add
to the list as you proceed through the stage hypnotism course.

----------------------------------------------------------------2.2 How to Guarantee Success with Your First Subject

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Once you have completed the exercises in this lesson on hypnotizing

you will be coming back to this page to remind yourself how to
guarantee success for your first subject.
After completing the exercise in part 2.1 of this lesson, I want you to
ask one of the above individuals to engage in a hypnosis experiment
with you.
Remember to say that you are trying out a new technique and you
would appreciate the help in conducting the experiment.
The subject will usually be excited about helping out and may share
some previous hypnosis experiences with you.
19

Make sure you listen to the person very carefully for he/she will give
you some very good feedback on what worked and what didn't work
during the previous session.
If the person has had no previous experience being hypnotized, then
your chances of success improve, as you will not be compared with
somebody else.

----------------------------------------------------------------2.3 Pre-hypnosis Your Guarantee for Success!

-----------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------What is pre-hypnosis?
--------------------Pre-hypnosis involves everything you say to a subject prior to the
actual hypnotism ceremony.
What you are trying to accomplish with pre-hypnosis is setting up
favorable conditions for you and your subject to operate.
20

People that are getting ready to become hypnotized for the first time
have several issues you want to address before the session. This will
help guarantee your success as a hypnotist.
Here are the issues or questions the subject will be thinking about.
1. Will I remember everything that happened during the hypnotic
session?
2. Can I get stuck in hypnosis?
3. Will I tell you something I don't want to tell you about my past?
4. How long will I be under?
5. Can I hear other things going on in the room while I am
hypnotized?
6. Can you make me do something I don't want to do?

-------------------------Your Pre-hypnosis Briefing

-------------------------You will always want to use a pre-hypnosis briefing for all of your
subjects and clients.

I will give you a briefing that will include all six elements. Feel free to
use this briefing word for word or re-design it any way you seem
necessary.
Make sure you include all six elements. This will be good practice for
all of you future sessions with hypnotizing individuals and well as
hypnotizing groups.

21

-------Briefing
--------

This is going to be fun!

Many people have concerns about hypnosis. At any time feel free to
ask any questions but let me go over a few things most people are
curious about.
Many people wonder, if they will remember everything that happens
during the hypnosis session.
You will remember anything you wish to remember and forget
anything you wish to forget.
When subjects volunteer to do stage shows, many times they will
forget most of the things going on because the things they do, may
be embarrassing to discuss with their friends attending the show.
However, if they wish to remember everything that happens, they will
remember everything that happens while under hypnosis.
Another concern many people have is if they can get stuck in
hypnosis.
Hypnosis is a state of awareness and a state of total concentration. It
takes a great deal of effort to concentrate intently. It is physically
impossible to keep that concentration up for a very long time.
Another concern many people have is if they will tell me something
that they would never tell another person. For example, this may be a
secret you don't want to reveal to anyone.
22

Make sure you tell your subject the following. "I can assure you that
you will not reveal anything to me that you don't wish to reveal." "In
hypnosis you always retain the freedom of choice."
"You may also wonder, how long will you be under hypnosis?"
"You will be under hypnosis for just a couple of minutes."
"Another question everyone has is, "will I hear everything that is
going on in the room?"
"Many hypnotic subjects will hear every sound that is going on since
hypnosis is a heightened state of consciousness." "Other people will
only hear my voice." "They will tune out the normal sounds going on
around them."
"The last concern people have is if I will make them do something
they don't want to do."
"The answer is no." "You always do what you wish to do." "I may ask
you to do 10 things and you only do 8." "You may do all 10 things."
"You determine how deeply and to what degree you will be
hypnotized."
"Do you have any other questions?"
"If not, let us proceed."

23

2.4 Hypnosis Experiments In the

Waking State
Now that you have answered all of the questions your subject may
ask you are ready to proceed in experiments in the waking state.
The waking state of hypnosis is actually a very light state of hypnosis.
Many times this state is good enough for a stage show, however it is
your goal to learn stage hypnosis in a very short period of time.
Success at waking hypnosis helps you achieve success very quickly.
It is also fun for the subject!
We will work with three experiments in the state of waking hypnosis.
We will not work with a specific hypnosis induction during this lesson.
However, as you learn how to effectively deliver suggestions in the
waking state, you can use this state to develop very rapid inductions
where the subject will be deeply hypnotized in just a few seconds.
So let's get started.

24

Waking Hypnosis Experiment 1.

Hands Raising and Lowering
>>Purpose<<
-------------

The purpose of this exercise is to get your subject cooperating with

you and the hypnotizing process. You are going to create
subconscious activity and have a visual guide as to how effective you
are giving suggestions.
==>Hands Raising and Lowering<==

For this exercise have the subject stand facing you. Tell the subject
that you are going to test his/her imagination.
Have the subject stand in front of you with arms outstretched, palms
facing toward the ground.
His legs will be spread apart about to shoulder width.
Ask the subject to look at his arms as they push out towards you to
make sure they are perfectly level and perfectly straight.
The subject's arms should be stretched out toward you and be
parallel with the floor.
This will make the subject appear as if he/she is sleepwalking.
As the subject is standing, facing you with his/her arms outstretched
toward you, say the following:
"Look at your arms and make sure they are perfectly level, perfectly
straight."
25

"Now that you are assured that they are perfectly level, perfectly
straight close your eyes down tight, shutting out the light."
"Keep your hands and arms level outstretched and listen to the
following suggestions."
"Imagine that a heavy weight is tied to your right hand pulling it down
toward the floor."
"It is a very heavy weight and is pulling your hand down toward the
floor."
"At the same time, pretend that a helium filled balloon is tied to your
left hand pulling it high up into the air."
"Left hand going high up in the air, right hand going down, down and
down toward the floor."
"Left hand going up, up, up in the air, right hand moving down, down,
down toward the floor.
Your left hand is moving up, up, up in the air, right hand is moving
down, down, toward the floor."
"Now at the count of three open your eyes keeping your hands and
arms exactly as they are right now."
"All right, one, two, three eyes open."
"Look at your arms."

----------------------==>End of exercise<==
----------------------

26

Hypnosis involves imagination. If your subject is very imaginative and

is listening and following your directions you will find his/her arms
separated by your suggestions of heavy weight and light balloon.
If the arms are separated by about a foot or more in distance of travel
either up or down, (Or Both) you can be assured that your subject is
following your directions correctly and is using concentration that will
lead into a deeper hypnotic state later on.
Congratulate your subject for his/her concentration and ask if
volunteering for another exercise would be acceptable.
Let us proceed now to the second exercise in waking hypnosis title,
eyes locking.

27

Waking Hypnosis Experiment 2.

Eyes Locking
==>Purpose<==

The purpose of this experiment is to activate the subject's imagination

that will take him/her into the realm of doing something that is a little
frightening.
Many hypnotists do this experiment first, but I find I get a better
response in stage shows if I can have the subject achieve something
that is a little less frightening first.
I don't want to send many stage volunteers back to their seats during
a performance. Many subjects are afraid to give you this kind of
control over them. You need to gain their confidence before
challenging them in a situation that may have a high probability of
failure.
You be the judge as you experiment with your subjects.

28

------------------==>Eyes Locking<==
-------------------

Have your subject sitting up in a chair with his feet flat on the floor,
hands resting on his lap. Fingers separated so they don't touch each
other.
Tell the subject that you are going to give some powerful suggestions
that will lock his eyes shut temporarily. Tell him after he has tested
his eyelids to make sure they are stuck you will give suggestions that
will release his eyes and he will be able to open them easily.
Here is what you will say.
"Sit up in your chair with your feet flat on the floor and your hands
resting in your lap. Separate your fingers so they do not touch."
"Inhale deeply and as you exhale, push any tension out of your
lungs."
"Now in a moment I am going to count to three."
"When I count three you will find that your eyelids will be stuck
together so tightly that you will not be able to open them no matter
how hard you try."
"You will try as hard as you can to open your eyes at that time and as
hard as you try, you will discover that your eyes will be locked tightly
in place."
"I will then snap my finger directly by your ear." When you hear me
snap my finger by your ear your eyes will open immediately."
"To begin close your eyes down tight and fasten your eyelids down
tightly."

29

"One, your eye lids are locking down tight, tight, tight.
"Two, your eyelids are locking down and sticking, tighter, tighter,
tighter."
"Three, your eyelids are closed and stuck that way, try as hard as you
can to open them, try as hard as you can. It is impossible to open
your eyelids, they are firmly stuck together."
"I am now snapping my finger by your ear." (Snap your fingers loudly
behind the subject's left or right ear. When you were challenging your
subject to open his eyes let your voice raise in pitch and excitement)
You want to allow the subject to experience of failing to open his eyes
because of your suggestions)
Once you have achieved the eye fastening technique that can be a
very scary thing for your subject to go through, you can assume that
your subject is ready to go deeper into hypnosis. Your subject will be
a very willing subject.
Now ask the subject how he/she feels and explain that you have one
more experiment that will be fun.

==>End of Exercise<==

30

Waking Hypnosis Experiment 3.

Altering the Sense of Balance
==> Purpose: <==
-----------------

The purpose of this experiment is to alter the sense of balance in

such a way as to prove that their is a kind of invisible force that you
are able to create in the mind of the subject.
Once you are comfortable with performing this exercise, you will find
it very interesting for audiences of your stage shows. Demonstrating
movement is always a hit with audience.
This is a convincer to the subject that something strange and different
is happening and it is a convincer to the audience that the individual
is under your "control."
--------------------------------------==> Altering the Sense of Balance <==
---------------------------------------

For this experiment you are going to affect your subject's sense of
balance to literally knock your subject off of his feet.
By now you have achieved a level of trust and rapport on the part of
the subject.
Before you begin take note that even though you will be asking the
subject to fall back in your arms, every once in a while the subject will

31

fall forward in exactly the opposite direction you are asking him/her to
fall.
Be on the alert. It may happen one out of a hundred times, but if it
happens with your very first subject you may think that you are doing
something wrong.
You are not doing anything wrong. When the subject does exactly the
opposite of what you are asking, he/she is concentrating in hypnosis
but is resisting you personally for some reason.
In a stage show you would just send the performer back to the
audience, but since you are only working with one person in a
personal experiment, you don't want to mention to your subject that
he/she is resisting you.
You will just congratulate your subject on the accomplishment of
altering the sense of balance through the magic of suggestion and
the magic of hypnosis.
For this experiment you are going to have the subject stand about 4
feet from a wall and facing the wall.
You are going to be standing directly behind the subject and you will
be giving suggestions that imply that the subject's sense of balance
will change and he/she will fall directly back into your arms.
Direct the subject to stare at a spot on the wall or ceiling that is about
2 or 3 feet above his head so he has to raise his chin and look up to
see the spot on the wall or ceiling.
Then direct the subject to place his feet together and stand up as
straight as he/she can and continue staring at the spot on the wall or
ceiling.
You are behind the subject at the time and position yourself to brace
against the weight of your subject's body as your subject loses
balance and falls back.
Direct your subject like this:
32

"With your feet together stand up straight and put your head back so
you can view an imaginary spot on the wall or ceiling."
"I am going to be directly behind you and will catch you as you lose
your balance and fall directly back into my arms." "You will be
perfectly safe as you fall back directly into my arms."
"As you stare at the imaginary spot, you will feel an invisible force
drawing you back into my arms." "You are falling back, back and
back into my arms."
(By this time you will see a rocking back and forth motion by your
subject as he/she is losing balance. If there is no movement yet,
continue to repeat the above statement until the rocking motion
starts. If there is a visible rocking and swaying movement by your
subject then continue with the following)
"This invisible force is pulling you back, back, back into my arms."
"You are falling back, back, back into my arms." "Safely falling back
into my arms." "Over, over, over, back into my arms."
Continue with the above statement until your subject has fallen into
your arms.
Never doubt in your mind that the subject will fall. He/she will fall as
long as you give the suggestions positively and you see in your mind
that the subject is falling back into your arms.
Once the subject has fallen back into your arms, ask how he/she
feels?
You may notice a glazed look on the face of your subject. If you
achieve that glazed look, you know you are on the right track.
This subject will work very well for you in a stage hypnotism
environment.
If the subject does not have a glazed over look, that is okay as well.

33

As long as you achieve the falling back into your arms effect you
have accomplished what some people call Waking Hypnosis and
Waking Suggestion.
Even though you have not learned a single "hypnotic induction" yet,
many hypnotic effects can be achieved with only the Waking
Hypnosis condition present.
This is very exciting. You have accomplished a great deal today on
your road to success as a professional stage hypnotist.

----------------------------------------------------------------2.5 Exercises for Further Learning ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In this lesson you learned how to find your first hypnotic subject.
You also learned how to induce Waking Hypnosis using 3 exercises.
During this week focus on getting at least 3 individuals to agree to
your hypnosis experiments.
Remember to "feel" you are the expert.
Remember to practice your pre-hypnosis routine to cover the 6
questions that every subject wants answered.
Then proceed with each of your subjects, one at a time and write
down your notes about what happened during each session, either in
the space below or on a separate page and include it in Lesson 2, in
your three ring binder.

2.6 Summary "The Power of 3"

You have taken the big step. You have told people that you are a
hypnotist and you have completed your first hypnotic experiment.
Don't go any further until you have successfully completed the 3
Waking Hypnosis Exercises on 3 individuals, during 3 separate
appointments.
The confidence you will pick up during these experiments will go a
long way in helping you achieve success as a professional stage
hypnotist in just a few weeks.
Good luck!

Lesson Three:
Practice With Your First Hypnotic
Induction

Table of Contents
3.0 Elements of A Stage Hypnosis Induction--------------3.1 Your First Hypnotic Induction------3.2 Follow-up With Your Hypnotic Subject ---------3.3 Exercises for Success! -----------3.4 Exercises for Further Learning ----------------3.5 Summary-------------------------------------

38

3.0 Elements of A Stage Hypnosis

Induction

There are seven elements to a great stage hypnosis induction.

They are:
1. Expectation
2. Focus
3. Control
4. Relaxation
5. Deepening
6. Post-hypnotic suggestions
7. Awakening

You must become expert of each of the steps in order to be assured

successful inductions on stage.
Memorize each step. You must memorize because you will be busy
watching your hypnotic volunteers on stage. You will be watching the
reaction of your audience.
39

You will be doing 3 things at the same time.

Each step then, must be memorized. After a few dozen shows, you
may find other things that work well for you.
By memorizing each step now and knowing where you are in the
hypnotic process at all times, you will have a very high rate of
success in hypnotizing people.
---------------------------==>1. Expectation <==
----------------------------

Your subjects must expect success during the hypnotic induction.

You must expect success and your audience must expect success.
The best way to guarantee success with your hypnotic induction is to
set up your expectations.
As a hypnotist you will find yourself setting up predictions on what is
going to happen at the count of three or when you snap your fingers,
or when you say a particular word.
By setting up predictable outcomes, your volunteers have time to
create and amplify your suggestions in their heads. They have time to
create the situations that you are asking them to create.
For example, one of the first predictable outcomes you convey to
your volunteers is: "You will find this experience to be an enjoyable
one." "You will have fun as the result of your being here on stage."
Once the show is over, if someone asks on of your subjects how
he/she felt being hypnotized, he/she will say something like, "I found
this experience to be an enjoyable one." "I had fun as a result of
being on stage."

40

------------------------------==>2. Focus <==

-------------------------------

Hypnosis is concentration. In order for your subjects to become

hypnotized they must be able to concentrate.
The problem is that people around them in the audience and even on
stage will try to distract them.
This is why you must teach each volunteer how to concentrate and
get into the hypnotic state of mind quickly.
You will tell your subjects to concentrate. You will tell them often in
the hypnotic induction.
Some statements you may use to get your subjects to concentrate
better are the following:
"Focus your attention on each and every word that I say."
"Listen to each and every word that I say."
41

"You are concentrating on each and every word that I say."

Hypnosis is concentration. Many people believe it is sleep. It is not.
Hypnosis is a heightened state of concentration. If you keep
reminding your subjects to "concentrate" while being on stage, the
laughter and noise of the audience will not distract them.
Each volunteer on stage will feel as if you are just talking to him.

----------------------------------------==> 3. Control <==

-----------------------------------------

In order to have a great presentation you must maintain control.

Sometimes it isn't easy. In fact if it is easy, everyone would be a
stage hypnotist and no one would be able to make a living at it.
The fact that you will conduct yourself as if everything is happening
exactly as planned will separate you from the beginners.
A stage hypnotism show is the most exciting show in entertainment,
because you will never know exactly how things will turn out.

I was performing a stage show at a high school in Illinois many years

ago and I knew I was in trouble when the principal greeted me in the
office and told me that he wanted to surprise all of the students.
He did not tell his students that a hypnotist would be the
entertainment during an assembly program.
None of these students had ever seen a stage hypnotist and none
had any idea of what would go on.

42

I gave my usual opening presentation where I explain what hypnosis

is and what to expect.
When I asked for volunteers, no one came forth.
I couldn't believe it! If no one volunteers, there will be no show.
Finally I told them they would have nothing to fear. I told them this
was going to be fun. I told them by participating in this show they
would get better test scores as a result.
The I motioned for people to come up on stage.
The entire bleachers unloaded and every student and teacher ran to
the 16 chairs that were set up on stage!
It took about 10 minutes before I could get control and finally get just
16 people to stay and send everyone else back to the bleachers.
The show finally started and it went well. Always remember, you need
to do everything you can to maintain control.
You control the principal by getting him to announce a head of time
that a hypnotist is coming to the school to demonstrate some funny
but amazing things using student volunteers.
You control the students by explaining that you are going to ask for
"16 volunteers to fill the seats, here on stage."
You control by telling each of your volunteers that you will make this
hypnosis experience an enjoyable one for him.
One more thing, if you find someone resisting you or being a wise
guy as he comes up to volunteer, you need to send that person back
quickly.
One person can ruin your show by pretending to be hypnotized and
then as soon as your back is turned he winks at the audience and lets
them know he is making a fool of you.

43

In every case when I have sent someone back that has been
exhibiting that behavior, your audiences will applause. The audience
wants you and the volunteers to succeed. You will only be successful
to the degree you maintain control.
Remember this line: "When in doubt, toss him out."
Maintain control!

---------------------------------------==> 4. Relaxation <==

----------------------------------------

Relaxation is great but it is not necessary for hypnosis! I bet you

didn't know that before.
The major reason you ask for hypnosis during an induction, is that it
settles the volunteer down, it helps you establish control, and it allows
the audience to see contrast with the active parts of the show.
During the stage hypnotism demonstration, you need to keep the
audience interested. You create more interest by using the contrast of
relaxation and movement.
Think of major action movies you have seen. Did you ever notice that
the movies that seem to have the most action also have very slow
moving sections.
The reason you need relaxation in a stage hypnotism show is to
create a more active show!

44

-----------------------------------==> 5. Deepening <==

------------------------------------

Deepening the hypnotic condition or the hypnotic trance is something

you do often during your hypnotic induction.
You may also use deepening techniques during the show after you
have completed the hypnotic induction.
Hypnosis involves concentration and many times a volunteer can
wake from the hypnotic condition and wonder what is going on.
You need to re-hypnotize that individual and quickly deepen his
trance condition.
When you begin your hypnotic induction you want to make sure you
use deepening techniques.
Some methods of deepening the hypnotic induction include:
A. Counting Backwards
B. Touching the subject
C. Using specific words and phrases
D. Compounding suggestion

I will demonstrate with examples for each technique of deepening.

Once you read the actual induction you will be able to quickly identify
deepening techniques.
Use a variety of techniques because you can never tell how subjects
will respond to any one technique.

45

-----------------------------==> A. Counting Backwards <==

-----------------------------

This is easy. During the hypnotic induction you will say something like
this:
"In a moment I am going to count down from 5 down to 1. With every
count you will find yourself going deeper and deeper into hypnosis"
Or you may say:
"As I count from 50 down to 1, you will find yourself going deeper and
deeper to sleep. 50, 49, 48, etc."

----------------------------------==> B. Touching the Subject <==

-----------------------------------

Touching the subject is an extremely effective way of deepening the

hypnotic condition.
If you were volunteering to go up on stage and have a stranger have
you do goofy things, wouldn't you want to get to know that person
better?
It can be scary on stage and my touching the subject you can erase
any of his fears as well as establish a close bond with your subject.
I usually touch the subject on the back of the neck, (if I can reach it)
or I may touch subjects on their shoulders.
46

I will set up the deepening effect by saying the following:

"As I touch you on the back of the neck, you will relax the muscles of
your neck allowing your head to fall forward on your chest." "When
your head falls on your chest you will go deeper and deeper asleep."
I will be using examples the rest of the lessons on additional
deepening techniques.

------------------------------------------==> C. Using Specific Words or Phrases <==

------------------------------------------You may use specific words or phrases to deepen hypnosis.
For example, you might say, "each and every time you hear me say
the word "relaxation," you will relax instantly, going deeper and
deeper into hypnosis."
You might use a phrase like, "each time you hear me say, "Ladies
and Gentlemen, we are gathered here tonight," you will go deeper
and deeper into hypnosis.

------------------------------------==> D. Compounding Suggestion <==

-------------------------------------

You develop a natural deepening in your volunteers as you

compound suggestion.

47

Just as compounding interest on your savings plan is a good thing,

compounding suggestion in your hypnosis inductions is a good thing.
One way to compound suggestion is to create expectation for the
compounding by saying this:
"Each and every activity that you perform will send you into a deeper
state of relaxation." "Your success in achieving the hypnotic
phenomena will allow you to go deeper and deeper asleep."
You will see many more examples of compounding as we progress
through the lessons.
---------------------------------------==> 6. Post-hypnotic suggestions <==
---------------------------------------Post hypnotic suggestions are used in every stage hypnosis
induction.
A post hypnotic suggestion is a suggestion or group of suggestions
you give your subjects or volunteers just before you awaken them
from hypnosis.
You give your volunteers post-hypnotic suggestions that they will
carry out when they are fully awake.
The suggestions are given in a way that tells the volunteer that he will
do something every time he hears or sees a specific cue.
For example, you might say, "after you awaken from hypnosis, each
and every time I point my finger directly at your forehead, you will do
deeply to sleep."
Or you might say, "at the count of 5 you will awaken from hypnosis.
Each and every time you hear me say the word "sleep" you will
instantly go deep into hypnosis."

48

In the above examples you are setting the up the volunteer to

become instantly hypnotized without a formal induction.
Hypnotherapists use post-hypnotic suggestions to re-hypnotize their
clients quickly for their client's additional scheduled visits.
This allows the therapist more time to work on their client's problems.
They don't have to spend as much time with the mechanics of the
hypnotic induction.

----------------------------------------==> 7. Awakening <==

----------------------------------------As you can imagine, the awakening part of the hypnosis induction is
very important.
If you can't awaken your subject, there won't be much of a show.
Awakening the subject is easy. Hypnosis is concentration. If you
walked away for 15 minutes from your volunteers, most of them
would awaken on their own. Their concentration would be broken by
the fact that they are getting no more verbal input from you.
If you had a heart attack and died in front of your audience, they
would awaken on their own rather quickly.
However, you want to create a pleasant experience around
awakening. It is great showmanship as well as it gives your subjects
time to rid themselves of any hypnotic influences they don't want to
carry back to their job or school.
You will awaken your subjects at least two times during a typical
stage show.

49

You awaken your subjects when you want them to perform a posthypnotic suggestion, and you awaken your subjects at the end of
your show to send them back to the audience.
Here is an example of how you awaken your subjects.
You will say, "at the count of five you will be wide awake." "You will
full of energy and you will feel like you are back to normal."
"All hypnosis effects will be removed." All right, one, two, three, you
are beginning to return to normal, four, FIVE."
"Wide awake, and alert. You are feeling good in every way."
Note: This is the awakening at the end of the show. If you are giving
your induction during the show and want them to perform, you would
not remove the hypnosis effects.

----------------------------------------------------------------3.1 Your First Hypnotic Induction

-----------------------------------------------------------------

You are about to give your first hypnotic induction. I am going to use
all of the elements we discussed in your first induction.
You will memorize your first induction. By committing your hypnosis
induction to memory, you will be confident that you are giving the
correct information to your subjects.

50

Before giving the hypnotic induction use the three waking hypnosis
exercises you practiced in lesson two.
It will be much easier to hypnotize if you begin with the waking
hypnosis exercises and then move into the hypnotic induction.
What you are accomplishing here is the first five activities of your
show.
1. You will use your pre-hypnosis speech in addressing your
audience and volunteers.
2-4. You will give your volunteers three waking hypnosis exercises
that will entertain your audience.
5. You will complete a hypnotic induction.
As you practice your induction on your first hypnotic subjects, keep in
mind the big picture. You will be using the same words and activities
in you professional stage hypnotism show!

----------------------------------------==> Begin With Your Previous Subjects <==

----------------------------------------To begin, let us use the same 3 hypnosis volunteers you used during
the Waking Hypnosis Experiments.
For this induction you will only work with one person. Working with
only one individual will allow you to notice many of the physical
changes that take place while someone is under hypnosis.
Also, this induction may seem rather short to you. The reason that it
is short is because the earlier experiments you perform on your
hypnotic subjects as well as your pre-hypnosis talk have conditioned
your subjects in a way that will make them enter the hypnotic
condition rather quickly.
51

Remember that you need to begin with the pre-hypnosis talk followed
by the three experiments using waking hypnosis.
Now you are ready to begin our first induction.
This induction will be an eyes open induction. What that means is that
your subjects begin the exercise with their eyes open.
The induction begins immediately after the third experiment from
lesson 2.

52

--------------------==> Instructions <==

--------------------

Tell your subject to begin by sitting up in his chair with his feet flat on
the floor, hands resting in his lap or on his thighs with his fingers
separated so they do not touch.
Next, use a glass marble, a crystal ball, or you can raise the palm of
your hand and ask your subject to focus his attention on it.
For this example, lets pretend you have your subject focusing on a
crystal ball.
Make sure that as your subject is watching the crystal ball that he/she
has to look up at around a 45-degree angle.
By looking up your subject's eyes will tire more quickly.
Now here is an induction I want you to memorize that will contain all
of the elements we discussed earlier in this lesson.

--------------------------------------------==> Induction 1. <== Eyes Open

---------------------------------------------

"Focus your attention on the crystal ball as I move it from side to side"
"As you focus on the crystal ball you will find that your body is
relaxing, deeply relaxing"
"All of your tension is just drifting away."

53

"Listen to each and every word that I say."

"Soon you will be slipping into a very relaxing state of hypnosis."
"Now we are going to take three, slow, deep breaths."
Ready, inhale slowly, hold it, now exhale." "Push all of the tension out
of your lungs."

"Let's take a second deep breath." "Hold it." "Let it go." "Let all of the
tension leave your body, now."
"Now take your third deep breath and as you do, close your eyelids
down, shutting out the light." "This will help you relax even more."
"Let all of the tension leave your lungs, now."
"From head to toe, all of your muscles are relaxing." "Each and every
breath that you take is sending you deeper and sounder into
hypnosis."
"Concentrate on each and every word that I say."
"You are relaxing more with each and every breath that you take and
each and every sound that you hear."
"Now as you sit comfortably in your chair, I am going to count
backward from ten down to one."
"With every count you will find yourself going deeper and deeper into
hypnosis."
"Your mind will always be keen and alert as your body is relaxing,
perfectly."
"All right, 10, you are going deeper asleep, 9, deeper and sounder
asleep, 8, 7, 6, relaxing more with every breath that you take, 5 going
deeper and sounder asleep, 4, relaxing deeply, 3, going deeper and
sounder asleep, 2, 1, you are deep asleep."
54

"Nothing will disturb you, just listen to the sound of my voice."

"In a moment, I am going to touch you on your back."
"When I touch you on your back, let your head fall forward on your
chest." "As your head falls forward, your neck muscles will relax,
sending you deeper and sounder asleep."
(Then touch his/her back)
"Now you are relaxing deeply in hypnosis." "Even though we have
been resting for just a few minutes, when you emerge from hypnosis
you will feel as if you were sleeping deeply for a long time." "You will
emerge from hypnosis feeling wonderfully alive and alert and better
than you have ever felt before."
In a moment I am going to count to five." At the count of five you will
be wide awake, alert, feeling good in every way." "Each and every
time today when I ask you to sit back down in this chair you will go
deeply into hypnosis."
"In the future, each and every time I ask you to sit in this special chair
you will go deeply into hypnosis."
"All right, one you are beginning to emerge from this wonderful state
of mind, two, three prepare yourself now, four, FIVE." "Wide awake
and alert." "You are feeling good in every way."

"How do you feel?"

55

---------------------------------3.3 Exercises for Success!

---------------------------------

Congratulations! You have successfully induced hypnosis in your first

volunteer.
If you have successfully drive home the pre-hypnosis briefing and
handled the 6 basic questions you will eliminate most of the
objections centered on the hypnosis experience.
Now you need to follow up with your volunteer to find out what he/she
though of the experience.
Here is a handy form to use.
Notes:

56

Induction Evaluation Form

Record your reactions and thoughts to this induction by answering
the following questions.
1. What was the first thing you thought about as you finished the
exercise?

2. How did you feel during the exercise?

3. How do you feel now?

4. Did you have any unusual sensations as you were listening to your
voice?

5. List anything that you felt was "memorable" during the exercise.

---------------------END OF FORM
---------------------

57

3.4 Exercises for Further Learning

A. Record your inductions:
Using a recording device, record your induction. Then play it back
and listen to how you sound.
What would you like to improve in your speech and delivery? Are you
talking loud enough? Are you emphasizing words, like "sleep" "relax,"
and other words associated with hypnosis?
If you were a subject listening to this induction what would you
change in the way you deliver each word and phrase?
Do you feel your are talking too fast or too slow?
Record each hypnosis session and then listen to your efforts once
you are away from your volunteers. Use your recordings as learning
tools to get better.
B. Evaluate each volunteer.
After each session while you are working one on one, use the
evaluation form questions to learn more about your volunteers'
perception of hypnosis.
You will learn more from studying these evaluations than reading all
of the hypnosis books you can find.
Every volunteer teaches you something new. I have been hypnotizing
over 26 years and I still learn new things about the hypnosis
experience.

58

----------------------------3.5 Summary
---------------------------Congratulations! You have learned a great deal about the practice of
stage hypnotism in the last two lessons.
This lesson taught you the major components of a successful stage
induction and then you learned a stage induction.
Commit this information to memory because as you work with groups
of people on stage, you will be doing a variety of things that you have
to think about while the basic hypnosis script is just flowing, as it is a
part of you.

As you develop your show in the upcoming lessons, you will be able
to get very creative and not rely on memory.

Good luck,
Wayne Perkins, "The School Assembly Hypnotist"

Lesson Four:
Producing Stage Phenomena With
One Person: Multiple Inductions and
Phenomena
--------------------------------------------------------------

60

Table of Contents
4.0 Introduction--------------4.1 Perkins Scale of Stage Hypnosis Phenomena------4.2 Light Stage Phenomena ---------4.3 Medium Stage Phenomena -----------4.4 Exercises for Further Learning ----------------4.5 Summary-------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------4.0 Introduction--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Always remember that you are accomplishing two things as we

progress through these lessons.
You are leaning how to hypnotize subjects for the purpose of stage
entertainment and you are building your first stage hypnotism show.
You will have to refer to the previous lessons and progress from there
to the end of the course.
So far you have selected your first hypnosis volunteers. You have
used the pre-hypnosis briefing. You have used waking hypnosis on
your first volunteers. You have hypnotized your first subjects.
Now you will begin to produce the hypnosis phenomena that makes
the stage show such great entertainment.
Let us begin!
61

--------------------------------------4.1 Scale of Hypnosis Phenomena

--------------------------------------In order to chop off many years of trial and error from your training, I
am going to give you what I use to create my shows.
I use the "Perkins Scale of Hypnosis Phenomena." The scale is a list
of funny things that you can give in the order of high probability of
success to low probability of success.
You need to give your subjects easy tasks in the beginning of your
show.
By giving your subject easy tasks, you will actually deepen your
hypnotic trance as the subject accomplishes one task after another.
Each time he/she is successful in achieving a task, it is much easier
for that person to achieve a more difficult task.
As you are giving your show, the audience sees one exciting or
interesting event after another. What you as a hypnotist see is a
training session. You are training your subjects to become successful
using the power of their own minds coupled with your skill as a
hypnotist.

In the Perkins Scale of Hypnosis Phenomena you have 3 stage of

hypnosis. You have the light stage, the medium stage and the deep
stage. Most of the best effects from your audiences' point of view will
be the effects from the light and medium stages.
This is going to fun!

--------------------------------------

62

4.2 Light Stage Phenomena

-------------------------------------

Once you have your subjects hypnotized as you did in the last lesson,
you should be able to ask you subjects to produce any phenomena
on this list and they should comply without any problem.
If your subject does not comply or fails to achieve the phenomena it
could be because your subject is resisting you.
Remember, subjects are always in control and can refuse to engage
in your experiments.
Sometimes if the subject has slipped into a deeper state of hypnosis
he/she may be responding very slowly. Therefore you will need to
repeat the command to him.
I am going to give you the list of experiments or hypnosis phenomena
to give the person during the light stages of hypnosis and they I am
going to give you the exact verbiage you use to your subjects to
actually produce the phenomena.
We will assume that you are working on one of your good subjects
that you have just hypnotized from lesson three.

------------------------------------==> Light Stage Hypnosis Phenomena

------------------------------------finger levitation

63

hand levitation
arm rigid and stiff
leg rigid and stiff
art of physical and mental abandonment

------------------------------------------------------------

==> Examples of how to deliver light hypnotic phenomena <==

-----------------------------------------------------------When you are delivering suggestions to your subjects you must be

always very positive in the way you deliver suggestions. Try not to be
too "commanding." People respond best when they feel you are
acting more as a coach than a drill instructor.
You want the subject to feel comfortable and relaxed while at the
same time you want audiences to be entertained.
I am going to give you examples of the examples of the exact script I
would be using when directing my subjects on stage. Most of the time
I repeat myself twice in giving suggestions, as some people need the
extra reinforcement.
Many hypnotists only give the suggestion to create phenomena one
time and expect their volunteers to hear and understand what is
going on. If you wish to work in this fashion that is fine with me. Just
understand that every hypnotist has his/her own comfort level and
entertaining style.

64

--------------------------------------==> Example A: Finger Levitation <==

-------------------------------------Assume for all of these examples that your subject is hypnotized and
is sitting in the chair. You have not awakened your subject from his
hypnosis session. He/she is sitting up in a chair with eyes closed
concentration in your voice.
The following is your script or what you will specifically say to obtain
entertaining hypnotic phenomena.
"As you are sitting up in your chair you are going deeper and sounder
asleep." "You are going deeper and deeper into hypnosis."
"Concentrate on the fingers of your hands." "Picture that you can see
the fingers of your hands in your imagination." "As you picture the
fingers of your hands you are going deeper and sounder asleep."
"In a moment your fingers will begin to twitch." "As you think about
the fingers of your hands they will become lighter in your lap and will
begin to twitch and move" "The sensation of twitching and moving will
send you deeper into hypnosis."
"Your fingers are twitching and moving, sending you deeper and
deeper into hypnosis."
-----------------A Note from Wayne
-----------------As you are watching your subject, you will notice by now that his/her
fingers are twitching. They may twitch or move very slightly or may be
moving quite visibly.
If fingers are not moving at this time then keep repeating the above
suggestions until you see definite movement.

65

If you do see the finger movement then proceed with the following
suggestions that are used to obtain further body movement.

----------------------------------==> Example B. Hand Levitation <==

----------------------------------"Now that your fingers are moving, you notice that your hands and
arms are getting lighter in your lap." "Your hands and arms are
feeling lighter and lighter." "They are getting lighter and lighter and
they begin to move up in the air by themselves."
"Your hands and arms are pushing out and are moving up, up, up in
the air." Your hands and arms are moving up, up, up in the air."

--------------------A Note from Wayne

--------------------At this point your subject's hands and arms should be raising
noticeably and pushing upward and outward. If you look at your
subject's face, you may see blushing. Your goal is to get any kind of
movement you can. Once you have an audience this experiment will
66

prove very interesting as the audience is witnessing automatic

movement.
So as the arms continue to move upward, your next move is to get
the arms to stop while in this posture. You will also give your subject
a post-hypnotic suggestion to create two more effects. You will create
stiffness in your subject's arms that will not allow the subject to lower
his/her arms. You will also give your subject post hypnotic suggestion
to instantly bring him into a deeper state of hypnosis.
Let us continue with the phenomena.
-----------------------------------------------------------==> Example C. Arm Stiff and a Post-hypnotic suggestion <==
----------------------------------------------------------"Your hands and arms are going up, up, up in the air." "In a moment I
am going to count to three." "When I count three a couple of strange
things will happen."
"Number one, you will find that you will awaken from hypnosis but
your hands and arms will be stuck right where they are." "They will be
impossible to put down until I snap my finger by your ear." "When I
snap my finger by your ear, your hands and arms will come down,
instantly."
"Secondly, after you awaken you will find that every time, today, that I
point my finger directly at your forehead, you will go into hypnosis,
instantly." "No matter what you may be doing at the time, when I point
my finger directly at your forehead, you will instantly close your eyes
and go deeper and sounder to sleep."

-------------------A Note from Wayne

--------------------

67

In the last paragraph you are delivering a post-hypnotic suggestion.

This means that your subject will awaken out of hypnosis but will
respond to a cue, (the hypnotist pointing a finger at the subject's
forehead) and the subject carrying out the cue. The subject will then
go right back into hypnosis.
This is very exciting because during the stage show you may ever
send the volunteer back among his friends and then you point at the
volunteer and he will seem to fall asleep right out in the audience.
The reason you are hypnotizing him/her "post-hypnotically" is so you
can demonstrate how quickly and easily a person can enter hypnosis
once being hypnotized. Think of how this benefits doctors and other
health care workers when trying to relax their patients?

Let us continue with your show!

"All right, one, two get ready to emerge from hypnosis, three, eyes
open, wide awake." "Now try to put your arms down." "Try as hard as
you can." "It is impossible to put your arms down."
(You will see a puzzled look on your subject's face. Now snap your
fingers by your subject's ear)
SNAP. "You are wide awake." "How do you feel?"
-------------------A note from Wayne
-------------------Your subject's hands and arms should have been stuck in place while
the subject's face would have shown confusion. If you ask your
subject to tell the audience why the arms were stuck, he/she will
usually say, "I don't know" or sometimes will make up a story. It is a
great effect for the audience to watch.
You have set up your subject for success. You have given your
subject an easy but entertaining task to complete and you have given
68

your subject a cue that will allow you to re-hypnotize many times
during the show.
You will continue on using medium stage phenomena that is very
funny.

-----------------------------------------4.3 Medium Stage Hypnosis Phenomena <==

-----------------------------------------Let us review what you have accomplished so far in the progress of
your show. Remember that you are just practicing now. Later on you
will learn specific stage patter to use to entertain your audience as
you work directly with your volunteers on stage. As you look back on
what you accomplished so far at this stage in your hypnotism show,
many things
Now that you and your subject are at the medium stage on the
Perkins Scale you can move on to more difficult phenomena. The
medium trace phenomena make the funniest stage hypnotism shows.
Here are some of your choices:

altering the sense of touch

altering the sense of smell

69

altering the sense of taste

altering the sense of hearing
time distortion
Creating amnesia
Creating a new identity
Creating positive and negative visual hallucinations
age regression
age progression

We will continue on with your practice and use a few of the above
hypnotic effects. You will develop a routine from each effect.

-----------------A note from Wayne

-----------------Now you should be able to expect your subject to carry out your
suggestions and perform the routine perfectly. If you do not notice
any change in your subject based on your suggestions, just move on
to the next routine.
If you are doing a stage show, you must move on through the
routines quickly whether they seem to be working or not.

70

---------------------------------------------------------------==> Routine 1. Medium Stage: Altering the sense of Touch <==

---------------------------------------------------------------Begin by telling your subject that you are sending him/her back
deeper asleep. Start by pointing your right forefinger directly at your
subject's forehead. Place your right forefinger about 3 inches from
your subject's forehead so that your subject will have to cross his
eyes as he focuses on your finger.
Say the following:
"I am pointing my finger directly at your forehead." "Close your eyes
down and go deeper into hypnosis."
"Go deeper and sounder asleep."
"A strange thing has happened in the room." "The furnace has kicked
on and it is sending some very hot air into the room." "It is getting
hotter and hotter." "It is getting hotter and hotter." "It is getting so hot."
"It is so hot." "You are beginning to perspire as you are feeling hotter
and hotter, hotter and hotter."
(Watch as your subject perspires and starts taking his shirt off. As
soon as your subject is beginning to get hot, then shift the effect to
make him feel very cold)

"And now it's beginning to get cold in here." "A cold blast of arctic air
is coming in the room and it is getting cold." "It is so cold, it is so
cold." "You are getting colder and colder." "You are getting colder and
colder." "You are so cold." "You are so cold."

71

------------------A note from Wayne

-----------------Notice the contrast. Contrast works well when you are creating
routines. Make sure you get the effect before moving on during
practice. You have the luxury of time as you practice. Once you begin
performing in front of audiences, you will have to execute the routine
and then move on to the next routine, whether you have been
successful or not.
Continue on with the following line that will normalize conditions and
then move on directly to the next routine.
"Now the temperature is back to normal." "You feel comfortable now
and you going down, deeper and deeper to sleep."
(Pause for a moment while your subject has a chance to go back into
a comfortable sleep. If you see your subject shivering or perspiring,
again give the suggestions that the "temperature is at comfortable
lever now."

---------------------------------------------==> Routine 2. Creating Amnesia <==

---------------------------------------------This is going to be fun. You are now going to create amnesia. This is
a very exciting effect to show your audiences. A great place to insert
amnesia is when your subject is responding well to your previous
routine.
You have just finished altering the sense of touch and now you are
going to alter your subject's memory.
Begin now.
"The temperature is fine now and you are going deeper and sounder
into hypnosis."

72

"In a moment I am going to count to three." "When I count three you

are going to open your eyes and this will send you deeper into
hypnosis." "At the same time a strange thing will happen." "You won't
remember your name, who you are, or anything about yourself until I
snap my fingers by your ear." "When I snap my fingers by your ear,
everything will come back, instantly."
"All right, one, two, three, eyes open."
"What is your name?" (Wait for a response for a few seconds)
"What is your name?"
"Where are you?" (Your subject will look around the room with a
confused look on his/her face)
"Now I am going to snap my fingers by your ear." (Snap your fingers
by either ear)
"Now tell me your name." (Your subject will tell you the correct name)
-----------------A note from Wayne
-----------------If your subject tells you his name when you first challenge him, it may
be a fear of losing control by the subject. Not everyone will
experience the amnesia effect. In fact many stage hypnotists use this
routine to weed out good subjects from bad subjects. A
Stage Hypnotist knows that if a subject will let you take his identity
away, he will allow you to do just about anything.
Later in the lessons I will show you how to weave this routine into
your completed show.
Make sure your subject knows his name before you go on to the next
routine in your show. Once you begin to hypnotize groups you won't
have to worry about forgetting to relieve an individual of the hypnotic
effects if you learn and practice this rule.

73

------------------------------==>Routine 3. Canary Birds <==

------------------------------This is a great effect. You will be altering your subject's sense of
sight. When used on stage this is a hilarious routine. You will be
working with just one subject for now and you will find it amazing as
well.
Remember that we have just finished the amnesia routine and we will
pick up right where we left off.
To begin you will point your finger directly at your subject's forehead
and say:
"Look at my finger." "Close your eyes down tight and go back deeper
and sounder asleep."
"In a moment I am going to count to three." "When I count three you
will open your eyes and an amazing thing will happen."
"You will find that a cute, little, yellow, canary bird is perched on your
right wrist." "It will be such a cute little, yellow, canary bird and it will
make you giggle and laugh." "You will be able to pet it and play with it
and it will make you giggle and laugh." "You will have so much fun
with your canary bird."
"At the count of three you will see the cute, canary bird." "All right,
one, two, put your right wrist out in front of you and get prepared to
see the canary bird." "Three, open your eyes and look at the canary
bird." "Play with the canary." "Isn't he the cutest, funniest, little canary
bird, you have ever seen?"
(At this point your subject should be petting or looking at his wrist and
reacting to the canary bird. If your subject has a confused look on his
face, go over to his right wrist and touch it with your right forefinger
and say, "look at the cute little canary bird." State your suggestion
very positively. You do not want to show any doubt in your voice or
74

demeanor that the effect will not work. Keep giving positive
suggestions about the canary bird)
Let's continue on with the show.
"Keep playing with the canary bird." (Now point your finger directly at
the subject's forehead)
"Look at my finger." "I am pointing at your forehead." "Close your
eyes and go deep and sound asleep." "Your memory of the canary is
fading now." "Lower your right arm and put it in your lap and go
deeper and sounder asleep."

--------------------A note from Wayne

--------------------You are now going to conclude your mini show, using your subject.
You will want to wake your subject from hypnosis and implant the
posthypnotic suggestion that whenever you subject participates in
these hypnosis experiments he/she will enjoy them thoroughly. Your
subject will respond to going deep asleep by looking at your pointed
finger, and that all hypnosis effects are removed. You are going to
make sure that the subject does not see the canary and can
remember his name.

We will continue by waking your subject.

"In a moment I am going to count to five." "At the count of five you will
be wide awake and alert." "You will feel better in every way." "You will
remember what an enjoyable time you had being hypnotized." "All of
the effects of hypnosis will disappear and you will be back to normal."

75

"Each and every time in the future, you will go deep asleep when you
see me point my finger directly at your forehead."
"Okay, one, two, get ready to emerge from hypnosis, three, four,
FIVE." "Open your eyes, stretch, yawn, and feel better in every way."
"How do you feel?"

END

------------------------------------4.4 Exercises for Further Learning

-----------------------------------You will evaluate each subject, as the only way you will learn how to
hypnotize properly is to learn from your subjects. Each subject will
have similarities and each will have differences. You will learn a great
deal by keeping a record of each of your sessions and reviewing
them later.

Your goal is to re-hypnotize each of your previous volunteers, using

the previous lessons as your guides and adding the stage hypnosis
routines. Keep a positive mind and always move from one routine to
another with complete confidence.
Before you move on to the next lesson, complete this lesson.
Good luck!

77

--------------------------------------------------Induction and Stage Hypnotism Show Evaluation Form

---------------------------------------------------

Record your reactions and thoughts to this induction by answering

the following questions.
1. What was the first thing you thought about as you finished the
exercise?

2. How did you feel during the exercise?

3. How do you feel now?

4. Did you have any unusual sensations as you were listening to your
voice?

5. List anything that you felt was "memorable" during the exercise.

78

----------------------------4.5 Summary
----------------------------

Congratulations! You have learned a great deal about the practice of

stage hypnotism in the last four lessons.
This lesson taught you how to work stage hypnosis routines.
Future lessons will fine expand and fine-tune your show.

80

------------------------------------------------------------5.0 Introduction-------------------------------------------------------------------------Are you getting excited? You should be excited. In this lesson you will
learn how to stage and perform your first group stage hypnotism
show!
You are going to learn how to perform stage hypnosis using 4 or
more volunteers.
By now, you have success in hypnotizing volunteers. After reading
the FAQS located in the next section of this lesson, I will dictate your
entire show, word for word. This will allow you to gain confidence in
your new skills.
I will progress through the entire show without any commercial
interruptions.
I will include the comments you make to your audience that will keep
their attention on the show and explain what is happening to your
volunteers.
Memorize as much of the show as you can. This will give you
confidence. Remember professional singers and magicians practice
their lines in front of a mirror. You may want to do the same.

From now on always remember that you have 3 goals to achieve

during every stage show.
1. You must entertain the audience.
2. You must entertain and enlighten your volunteers.
3. You must experiment and learn new routines.

Q4. How long is this show going to take?
A4. Your first show used at parties will run between 20-30 minutes in
length.
Follow this guide.
Small party hypnosis ======> 20-30 minutes in length.
High School assembly programs ====> 40-60 minutes in length.
College major events and comedy clubs ===> 90 minutes in length.
Q5. Who should introduce me and how should I be introduced?

82

A5. The party host should introduce you.

Here is a short introduction you can copy, paste and present to your
host the night of the party.

-------------INTRODUCTION
--------------

Thank you everyone for coming to my party.

Tonight we have a very special surprise.
NAME______________ is a professional stage hypnotist and will
perform an entertaining show for you. He will need volunteers for his
show once he gets started so be sure to join in on the fun.
I am happy to present ____________ _______________.

Now that the introduction is over, walk quickly up to the stage area
and shake your host's hand.
Face the audience and begin!

Q6. What stage props do I need?

A6. Use a crystal ball, a marble or a shot glass. You are going to use
an eyes-open induction and will use the item as a focal point that your
volunteers can use to concentrate.

83

5.2 Your First Stage Show for Parties

--------------------------------------Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen, my name is __________
______ and I am a stage hypnotist.
To night we are going to have some fun.
Before you here on stage you will notice 6 empty chairs.
Soon these chairs will be filled with people learning how to
concentrate in hypnosis. They will entertain you and at the same time
learn how to use the awesome power of their own minds.
Before I ask for volunteers, I will explain a few things about hypnosis.

Many people have concerns about hypnosis. Let me go over a few

things most people are curious about.
You may wonder, if the volunteers tonight will remember everything
that happens during the hypnosis session.
They will remember everything they wish to remember and forget
anything they wish to forget.
Another concern many volunteers have is if they can get stuck in
hypnosis.
Hypnosis is a state of awareness and a state of total concentration. It
takes a great deal of effort to concentrate intently. It is physically
impossible to keep that concentration up for a very long time.
Therefore they won't get stuck in hypnosis.
Also, you won't tell me anything you would not tell me in public. You
will always know you are on stage in front of an audience.
84

You may also wonder, how long will I be under hypnosis?

You will be under hypnosis for just a few minutes.
Will the volunteers hear everything that is going on around them?
Yes, they will. But they will block out most of the sounds and focus on
my voice and my suggestions.

The last concern people have is if I will make them do something they
don't want to do.
First of all, I am not going to do anything that will hurt them or
humiliate them. So they won't have to fear doing something that they
will regret later.

Hypnosis is simply concentration. The volunteers may appear deep

asleep but in fact they will be very active and alert.
Hypnosis is a state of awareness not unawareness.
Everyone who volunteers will have fun. The audience will have fun
and be entertained as well.
In addition, everyone who volunteers to explore the true magic of
their mind will feel very rested after the show. They will feel as if they
received several hours of deep sleep.
Wow, who would have thought that sleeping at a party would be fun?
If you are thinking of volunteering, I only ask of two things.
Number one, you cooperate with me and make this a fun experience
for you and the audience.
Number two, if you are drunk, please don't come up. When a person
comes up and is drunk, many times as they relax they will violently
85

throw up all over the audience. It's kind of fun for me, but not much
fun for people in the audience.
(PAUSE FOR A MOMENT TO GET A FEW LAUGHS)
I know people sitting near the back of the room may think this will be
funny to see, however we are talking about long distance, projectile,
vomiting. No one in the room will be safe.
So to recap, cooperate with me and make this a fun experience for
you and the audience, and please don't come up here if you are
drunk.
All right, it's time now, so come up, come up, and come up on the
stage. Sit in these chairs.
(AS YOU ARE TELLING THE VOLUNTEERS TO COME UP
MOTION WITH YOUR HANDS TO COME UP AND PERIODICALLY
POINT TO THE EMPTY CHAIRS. KEEP THE PATTER GOING
UNTIL EVERYONE HAS COME UP ON THE STAGE AND FILLED
THE CHAIRS. IF YOU NEED A FEW ADDITIONAL CHAIRS, THE
HOST WILL USUSALLY TRY TO FIND SOME. PERSONALLY
DIRECT EACH INDIVIDUAL TO THEIR CHAIR. TRY TO KEEP A
BOY/GIRL, BOY/GIRL ARRANGEMENT AND DON'T ALLOW
PEOPLE TO HOLD HANDS WITH EACH OTHER. IF YOU SEE
TWO PEOPLE HOLDING HANDS ON STAGE YOU CAN SAY,
Hypnosis is mental concentration and is NOT a religion, so you don't
need to hold hands)
Continue once everyone is seated in his or her chairs.

Audience, give all of these brave volunteers a big hand for coming up
on stage. My back will be to the audience as the real comedy and
entertainment will be coming from the volunteers on stage.
I only will ask you to be quiet as I give the volunteers their initial
instructions and also while I am hypnotizing them. After that, all of
you in the audience can laugh and have fun. The volunteers will be

86

concentrating so well on my voice that they will not hear much of

what is going on in the audience.

(NOW TURN TO THE VOLUNTEERS AND ADDRESS THEM)

Again, thank you for coming up to join these experiments in hypnosis.
You are going to have fun! Just pay attention to each and every word
that I say tonight and you will experience the true power of your own
mind, using hypnosis.
Hypnosis involves concentration and I am going to teach you how to
concentrate so well tonight, that you will have the power to overcome
bad habits and achieve all of your goals.
Sit up in your chair with your feet flat on the floor. Let your hands rest
on your knees or in your lap. Keep your fingers separated so they do
not touch.
Focus your attention on my crystal ball. Watch the crystal ball as I
move it slowly from side to side. As you look into the crystal ball, your
body is relaxing, deeply relaxing.
All of your cares and troubles are leaving your body now.
I am going to count from five down to one. When I reach the count of
one, close your eyes down tight, shutting out the light. This will help
you relax very deeply.
Five, your eyes are growing tired, four, deeper and sounder into
hypnosis, three get ready to close your eyes, two, ONE, close your
eyes down tight, shutting out the light. Go deeper and sounder
asleep.
With each and every deep breath that you take, you are going deeper
and sounder into hypnosis. With each and every sound that you hear
you are going deeper and sounder asleep.

87

Nothing with disturb you, concentrate on the sound of my voice. Each

and every breath that you take is sending you deeper and sounder
asleep.
All of your tension is just drifting away.
Listen to each and every word that I say.
Soon you will be slipping into a very relaxing state of hypnosis.
Now we are going to take three, slow, deep breaths.
Ready, inhale slowly, hold it, and now exhale. Push all of the tension
out of your lungs.

Let's take a second deep breath. Hold it. Let it go. Let all of the
tension leave your body, now.
Now take your third deep breath and as you do, close your eyelids
down, shutting out the light. This will help you relax even more.
Let all of the tension leave your lungs, now.
From head to toe, all of your muscles are relaxing. Each and every
breath that you take is sending you deeper and sounder into
hypnosis.
Concentrate on each and every word that I say.
You are relaxing more with each and every breath that you take and
each and every sound that you hear.
Now as you sit comfortably in your chair, I am going to count
backward from ten down to one.
With every count you will find yourself going deeper and deeper into
hypnosis.

88

Your mind will always be keen and alert as your body is relaxing,
perfectly.
All right, 10, you are going deeper asleep, 9, deeper and sounder
asleep, 8, 7, 6, relaxing more with every breath that you take, 5 going
deeper and sounder asleep, 4, relaxing deeply, 3, going deeper and
sounder asleep, 2, 1, you are deep asleep.
Nothing will disturb you, just listen to the sound of my voice.
In a moment, I am going to touch you on your back.
When I touch you on your back, let your head fall forward on your
chest. As your head falls forward, your neck muscles will relax,
sending you deeper and sounder asleep.
(Then touch his/her back)
Now you are relaxing deeply in hypnosis. Even though we have been
resting for just a few minutes, when you emerge from hypnosis you
will feel as if you were sleeping deeply for a long time. You will
emerge from hypnosis feeling wonderfully alive and alert and better
than you have ever felt before.
In a moment I am going to count to five. At the count of five you will
be wide awake, alert, feeling good in every way. Each and every time
today when I ask you to sit back down in this chair you will go deeply
into hypnosis. Each and every time that I point my finger directly at
your forehead, no matter what you may be doing at the time, you will
instantly go deeper and sounder into hypnosis.

All right, one you are beginning to emerge from this wonderful state of
mind, two, three prepare yourself now, four, FIVE. Wide awake and
alert. You are feeling good in every way.

How do you feel?

89

-----------------------------------------------------------------ASK EACH MEMBER HOW THEY FEEL? MOST OF THEM WILL

SAY RELAXED. SOME MAY ALREADY HAVE A CONFUSED LOOK
ON THEIR FACES. IF YOU HAVE SOMEONE WITH A VERY
CONFUSED LOOK, MAKE NOTE AS HE/SHE MAY BE ONE OF
YOUR BEST SUBJECTS
-----------------------------------------------------------------(Turn to the audience and say)
Let's give all of the volunteers a big hand. Weren't they great?
Now volunteers we are now going to conduct some experiments in
what is called waking hypnosis.
Now we are going to test your imagination.
Stand up in front of your chairs with your hands and arms
outstretched as if you are sleep-walking.
Look at your arms and make sure they are perfectly level, perfectly
straight.
Now that you are assured that they are perfectly level, perfectly
straight close your eyes down tight, shutting out the light.
Keep your hands and arms level and listen to the following
suggestions.
Imagine that a heavy weight is tied to your right hand pulling it down
toward the floor.
It is a very heavy weight and is pulling your hand down toward the
floor.
At the same time, pretend that a helium filled balloon is tied to your
left hand pulling it high up into the air.

90

Left hand going high up in the air, right hand going down, down down,
toward the floor.
Left hand going up, up, up in the air, right hand moving down, down,
down toward the floor.
Your left hand is moving up, up, up in the air, right hand is moving
down, down, toward the floor.
Now at the count of three open your eyes keeping your hands and
arms exactly as they are right now.
All right, one, two, three eyes open.
Look at your arms.
Audience, notice the difference in everyone's imagination.
You have a great imagination
(POINT TO A PERSON WHO HAS HIS ARMS SEPERATED BY A
GREAT DISTANCE. POINT TO ANOTHER PERSON WHO HAS HIS
ARMS SEPERATED SLIGHTLY AND MENTION THAT HE WILL
GET BETTER AS WE PROGRESS THROUGH THE HYPNOSIS
EXPERIEMENTS)
Let's give everyone a big hand for doing so well.
All right, sit back in your chairs and get ready for the next experiment.

You are now going to lock your eyelids together so tightly that you will
not be able to open them, no matter how hard you try until I snap my
fingers by your ear. When I snap my fingers by your ear your eyes
will come open, instantly.
To begin close your eyes down tight and fasten your eyelids down
tightly.

91

One, your eye lids are locking down tight, tight, tight, two, your
eyelids are locking down and sticking, tighter, tighter, tighter.
Three, your eyelids are closed and stuck that way, try as hard as you
can to open them, try as hard as you can. It is impossible to open
your eyelids. They are firmly stuck together.
Now forget about your eyelids, allow yourself to go down deeper and
sounder asleep.
Each and every breath that you take is sending you deep asleep,
each and every sound that you hear is sending you deep asleep.
Nothing will awaken you just listen to my voice.
I am going to touch you on your back. As I touch you on your back,
let your head fall forward on your chest, sending you deeper and
sounder into hypnosis.
In a moment I am going to count to three, when I reach three your
eyes will open and you will still be under the influence of hypnosis.
All right, one, two, three, eyes open. (NOW SELECT A VOLUNTEER
TO DEMONSTRATE THE ALTERING OF BALANCE PHENOMENA.
HAVE HIM MOVE FOREWARD ON THE STAGE FACING THE
AUDIENCE AND THEN GET BEHIND HIM AND TELL HIM YOU
WILL BE THERE TO CATCH HIM WHEN HE FALLS BACK INTO
YOUR ARMS. IF YOU ONLY HAVE 4 OR 6 PEOPLE ON STAGE,
DEMONSTRATE THIS PHENOMENON WITH EACH VOLUNTEER)
Members of the audience, I am now going to show how words can
literally knock a person off of his feet.
Sir put your head back and stare at a spot on the wall or ceiling in the
distance. Allow your eyes to go out of focus.
Put your feet together and bend your knees slightly. This will assist
you in falling backwards into my arms, very easily.
All right, you begin to feel a force, pulling you back into my arms. You
are falling back, back, back, into my arms, you are falling back into
92

my arms. I am here to catch you. An invisible force is pulling you back

into my arms.
(KEEP SUGGESTIONS THE LOSS OF BALANCE UNTIL EACH OF
THE 4-6 MEMBERS HAS FALLEN BACK INTO YOUR ARMS. AS
SOON AS ONE AS FINISHED TELL HIM/HER TO GO BACK TO
THE CHAIR ON STAGE, CLOSE HIS/HER EYES AND GO DEEPER
INTO HYPNOSIS. WHEN FINISHED SAY THE FOLLOWING)
Let's give everyone a big hand.
Now we are going to have some fun.
Volunteers, on stage go deeper and sounder asleep. Nothing will
awaken you until I awaken you, nothing will disturb you, concentrate
on the sound of my voice. Each and every time I suggest sleep to
you, you will go deeper and sounder to sleep than ever before.
Concentrate on the fingers of your hands. Picture that you can see
the fingers of your hands in your imagination. As you picture the
fingers of your hands you are going deeper and sounder asleep.
In a moment your fingers will begin to twitch. As you think about the
fingers of your hands they will become lighter in your lap and will
begin to twitch and move The sensation of twitching and moving will
send you deeper into hypnosis.
Your fingers are twitching and moving, sending you deeper and
deeper into hypnosis.
Now that your fingers are moving, you notice that your hands and
arms are getting lighter in your lap. Your hands and arms are feeling
lighter and lighter. They are getting lighter and lighter and they begin
to move up in the air by themselves.
Your hands and arms are pushing out and are moving up, up, up in
the air. Your hands and arms are moving up, up, up in the air.

93

Your hands and arms are going up, up, up in the air. In a moment I
am going to count to three. When I count three a couple of strange
things will happen.
Number one, you will find that you will awaken from hypnosis but your
hands and arms will be stuck right where they are. They will be
impossible to put down until I snap my finger by your ear. When I
snap my finger by your ear, your hands and arms will come down,
instantly.
Secondly, after you awaken you will find that every time, today, that I
point my finger directly at your forehead, you will go into hypnosis,
instantly. No matter what you may be doing at the time, when I point
my finger directly at your forehead, you will instantly close your eyes
and go deeper and sounder to sleep.
All right, one, two get ready to emerge from hypnosis, three, eyes
open, wide awake. Now try to put your arms down. Try as hard as
you can. It is impossible to put your arms down.
(You will see a puzzled look on your subject's face. Now snap your
fingers by your subject's ear)
SNAP. You are wide-awake. Now try to put your arms down. What's
wrong with your hands?
(GO TO EACH VOLUNTEER WHOSE HANDS AND ARMS ARE
STUCK AND ASK WHY THE ARMS ARE STUCK. SOME
VOLUNTEERS MAY GIVE YOU VERY STRANGE ANSWERS THAT
ARE QUITE FUNNY. NOW SNAP YOUR FINGERS BY THE EAR
OF EACH VOLUNTEER AND TELL HIM/HER TO GO BACK TO HIS
CHAIR AND GO DEEPER AND SOUNDER ASLEEP)
Go deeper and sounder asleep.
In a moment I am going to count to three. When I count three I very
strange thing will happen.
The furnace in this building has started up and will be sending very
hot, uncomfortable air directly at you.
94

All right, one, two, three, it is getting so hot, it is getting so hot, it is

very uncomfortable.
It is getting hotter and hotter. It is getting hotter and hotter. It is getting
so hot. It is so hot. You are beginning to perspire, as you are feeling
hotter and hotter, hotter and hotter.

And now it's beginning to get cold in here. A cold blast of arctic air is
coming in the room and it is getting cold. It is getting so cold. It is so
cold. You are getting colder and colder. You are getting colder and
colder. You are so cold. You are so cold. It is so cold, you shiver and
shake it is so cold, it is so cold. (PAUSE)
Now the temperature is back to normal. You feel comfortable now
and you going down, deeper and deeper to sleep.
You are going deeper and sounder asleep.
In a moment you I am going to count to three. When I count three a
very strange thing will happen.
You will find that a cute, little, yellow, canary bird is perched on your
right wrist. It will be such a cute little, yellow, canary bird and it will
make you giggle and laugh. You will be able to pet it and play with it
and it will make you giggle and laugh. You will have so much fun with
your canary bird.
At the count of three you will see the cute, canary bird. All right, one,
two, put your right wrist out in front of you and get prepared to see the
canary bird. Three open your eyes and look at the canary bird. Play
with the canary. Isn't he the cutest, funniest, little canary bird, you
have ever seen?

Keep playing with the canary bird.

Look at my finger. I am pointing at your forehead. Close your eyes
and go deep and sound asleep. Your memory of the canary is fading
95

now. Lower your right arm and put it in your lap and go deeper and
sounder asleep.

Ladies and gentlemen in the audience, let's give all of the volunteers
a big hand for their performance.
Now volunteers, go deeper and sounder to sleep. You feel good. You
feel fine. You feel perfectly relaxed.
In a moment I am going to count to three. When I count three you are
going to open your eyes and this will send you deeper into hypnosis.
At the same time a strange thing will happen. You won't remember
your name, who you are, or anything about yourself until I snap my
fingers by your ear. When I snap my fingers by your ear, everything
will come back, instantly.
All right, one, two, three, eyes open.
What is your name? (Wait for a response for a few seconds)

What is your name?

Where are you?
(POINT TOWARD THE AUDIENCE AND ASK ONE OF YOUR
VOLUNTEERS)
Who are those people?
(GO TO THE NEXT VOLUNTEER ASKING THE SAME
QUESTIONS. ONE BY ONE, SNAP YOUR FINGERS BY EACH
PERSON'S EAR AND REASK THE QUESION USING THE SCRIPT
BELOW)
I am snapping my fingers by your ear. Now tell me, what is your
name?

96

(ONCE EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR NAME SAY THE FOLLOWING)

All right, look at my finger. I am pointing my finger directly at your
forehead, close your eyes and go deeper and sounder asleep.
Nothing will awaken you until I awake you. Nothing will disturb you,
just concentrate on the sound of my voice.

Audience, give all of the volunteers a big hand. Weren't they great?
Volunteers, in a moment I am going to count to five. When I count five
you will be wide awake and alert, feeling better than you have ever
felt before.
Tonight, when you go to bed, you will sleep soundly and tomorrow
you will feel better than you have ever felt before.
And when I count five a couple of strange things will happen.
Number one, when I ask you to return to the audience, you will find
that you are stuck to your chair here on stage. It will be impossible for
you to leave your chair until I snap my fingers by your ear.
When I snap my fingers by your ear you will be able to get up easily
out of your chair and go out into the audience.
Secondly, you will notice that when you go out into the audience,
everyone in the audience is wearing a funny mask.
The funny masks will make you laugh. They will be so funny and you
will have so much funny laughing at your friends in the audience.
You will be able to see the funny masks for 5 minutes after the show.
All right, one, get ready to emerge from hypnosis.
Two, you are beginning to come back to full awareness.

97

Three all of the hypnosis effects are leaving your now.

Four get ready to see the audience.
FIVE Wide awake and alert.
Now try to leave your seats and rejoin the audience. Try as hard as
you can.
(NOW SNAP YOUR FINGERS BY A VOLUNTEER'S EAR AND
POINT TO THE AUDIENCE AND ALLOW HIM/HER TO SEE THE
IMAGINARY FUNNY MASKS. ONE BY ONE RELEASE EACH
VOLUNTEER)
Look at that mask over there. Isn't that funny? Look over there.
Audience, let's give all of the volunteers a big hand. Thank you so
much for the opportunity to demonstrate the true magic of the mind,
hypnotism.

-----------------------------------------5.3 Wrap Up

-----------------------------------------After you have let everyone go out into the audience watch each
volunteer's reactions carefully.
Some of your volunteers will not show much of an effect. Some will
really get into trying to pull off the imaginary masks.
Some people may actually look afraid.
If an audience member goes over to you and is worried about the
reaction he/she is getting from one of your volunteers to immediately
over to the volunteer, hold him by the shoulder and say the following.
98

Look at my finger. I am pointing it at your forehead. Close your eyes

and go deep asleep.
In a moment I am going to count to three. When I count three, you will
be wide awake, alert, feeling better than you have ever felt before. All
the effects of hypnosis will be gone.
All right, one, two three eyes open, wide-awake.
How do you feel?
(THE VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCED WHAT I CALL "HANGOVER"
THE HANGOVER WILL LEAVE THE VOLUNTEER ONCE YOU
BEGIN WORKING WITH HIM/HER AND GIVING HIM/HER THE
ABOVE SUGGESTIONS)
Congratulations! You have just completed your first live show. How
do feel?
You are well on your way to becoming a paid, professional stage
hypnotist.

------------------------------------5.4 Exercises for Further Learning

-----------------------------------Start talking up your stage skills and offer to volunteer your show for
parties.
In the beginning you may want to give your shows for free in
exchange for a written endorsement or reference by the party host.

99

You can use your hosts' names and telephone numbers if you need
references for schools, comedy clubs, or corporation parties, in the
future.
Fill out the Stage Hypnotism Show Evaluation Form below and keep
a record like this for all of your future shows. Self-evaluation proves to
be the best way to ensure future success!

----------------------------5.5 Summary
-----------------------------

Congratulations! You have learned a great deal about the practice of

stage hypnotism in the last five lessons.
This lesson taught you how to work your first stage show that you can
practice at parties. After learning a few more routines, and refining
your stage patter, you will soon be ready for high school assembly
programs, comedy clubs and college major events!

103

Lesson Six:
Adding Funny Routines to Your
Show

Table of Contents
6.0 Introduction--------------6.1 Adding New Routines ------6.2 Exercises for Further Learning---------6.3 Summary ------------

104

6.0 Introduction-------------Congratulations on your success so far! Now you will add more funny
routines in order to expand your show in order for you to perform at
high school assembly programs and at comedy venues.
In order for you to have a complete show you must have a minimum
of 40-60 minutes worth of entertainment.
Since college performances can run an hour and a half or more, you
need to learn many new routines.
As you learn the following routines, I want you to flex your creative
muscle and think of additional scenarios and routines you can create.
Make sure you practice the wording of the routine several times
before you test it on an audience.
You want to be well rehearsed on the exact wording you will use for
each hypnosis routine so you will appear smooth and professional.
The most important piece of advice I can give you is always picture
your subjects completing the routine successfully as you are creating
and delivering the routines.
You must firmly believe that each subject is in your control and will be
responsive.
Never doubt your abilities as a hypnotist.
Hypnotized subjects are very in tune with the wording of your
suggestions as well as the confidence you have in your suggestions.

105

If your subjects doubt that your suggestions will work because of your
lack of self-confidence, the suggestions will not work and you will
have a terrible show.

Bad shows have happened to every hypnotist now and then. If you
ever have a bad show, just pick yourself up and begin again.
You will learn more from your failures than your successes.
The biggest secret behind a successful stage hypnotism show is that
everyone in the audience and everyone on stage want your show to
succeed.
With that kind of support, how can you fail?
Lets us begin to practice and add routines to your show.
Begin to make up your own routines as you get confident practicing
and working in these.
Good luck.

106

6.1 Adding Funny Routines

---------------------------------==> Waking Hypnosis Routines <==
----------------------------------

The following are some Waking Hypnosis routines to add to the

beginning of your show.

-----------------------------==> Hands Locking Routine <==

------------------------------

Stand up in front of your chairs and look and focus your attention on
me and concentrate on my suggestions.
Stretch your arms out in front of you with your palms facing each
other. Clasp your hands together with your fingers laced together and
squeeze your hands tightly together.
Now look at your hands. Stare at your hands. I am going to give you
suggestions locking your hands tightly together. Your hands will be
locked together so tightly that they will not come apart until I snap my
fingers by your ear. When I snap my fingers by your ear they will
become unlocked, immediately.
107

All right, one your hands are locking together, tight, tight tight.
Two, your hands are locking together, tighter, tighter, tighter, tighter.
Three, your hands are locked together so tightly you cannot pull them
apart. Try as hard as you can to pull them apart. Try as hard as you
can to pull your hands apart.
Now I am snapping my finger by your ear. (SNAP) There, your hands
are unlocked. Wasn't that amazing.
Audience, give the volunteers a big hand for their efforts here on
stage.

-----------------A Note from Wayne

-----------------Many of your subjects will try as hard as they can to pry apart their
hands. Some volunteers will have very worried looks as though they
will never get their hands apart. When working with a group of
volunteers, snap your fingers by the individuals that do not display
that kind of anxiety, first. Wait until most of the volunteers are
released from the effect before you work on the person displaying
that much anxiety. The audience loves to examine the looks on the
faces of the volunteers during the show.
The very anxious volunteers, that create are locked tightly, will prove
to be your best hypnotic subjects for future routines.

108

--------------------------==> Mental Abandonment <==

---------------------------

(BEGIN BY TALKING TO THE AUDIENCE)

Have you ever gone to a party by yourself and you didn't know
anyone there? How did you feel? Remember how self-conscious you
felt.

The next experiment is called mental abandonment and is designed

to help you overcome being self-conscious at a party.
Volunteers on stage sit up in your chairs and focus your attention on
me in front of you.
Place your hands by your ears and start them shaking by themselves.
Shake them faster and faster. Shake them faster and faster. Let your
hands shake wildly by themselves. Let them shake wildly by
themselves.
(CONTINUE GIVING THE SAME SUGGESTIONS AND AT THE
SAME TIME PLACE YOUR HANDS BY YOUR HEAD AND ALLOW
THEM TO VIBRATE FASTER AND FASTER BY THEMSELVES)
Now slow your hands down. Slow them down. Slow them down. Stop.
Let your hands fall back into your lap.
(NOW TURN TO THE AUDIENCE AND SAY)
If you are not self-conscious doing that, you will never feel selfconscious again.

109

(THE AUDIENCE WILL HAVE A GREAT TIME WITH THIS EFFECT

AS ALL OF THE VOLUNTEERS WILL BE VIBRATING THEIR
HANDS BY THEIR HEADS IN COMEDIC FASHION)

--------------------------------==> Coins Falling from Hands <==

--------------------------------(THIS EFFECT WORKS BEST IF YOUR VOLUNTEERS ARE ON A
STAGE WITH A WOODEN FLOOR. YOU WILL GIVE EACH OF
YOUR VOLUNTEERS 2 PENNIES AND INSTRUCT THE
VOLUNTEERS TO EXTEND THEIR ARMS OUT IN FRONT OF
THEM WITH THE PALMS OF THEIR HANDS FACING UPWARD
WITH A PENNY PLACED ON THE PALM OF EACH HAND.
PROCEED WITH THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOUR
VOLUNTEERS)

Volunteers, place the coins I gave you in the center of your hands,
palms face up so that the coins face the sky.

110

Soon you will find a strange force causing your hands to tremble and
shake.
Your hands are beginning to shake. Your hands are shaking more
and more. Your hands are shaking more and more. It is impossible to
keep your hands still. It is impossible to keep your hands still.
(KEEP STATING THE ABOVE SUGGESTIONS AND SOON HANDS
WILL BEGIN TO SHAKE AND COINS WILL FALL ON THE
WOODEN FLOOR MAKING NOISE AND YOUR AUDIENCE WILL
HAVE A GREAT TIME WITH THE ROUTINE. WHEN YOU FEEL
THE AUDIENCE HAS HAD ENOUGH, SAY THE FOLLOWING TO
THE VOLUNTEERS)
Stop shaking. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath and sit back
down on your chair.
Audience, give the volunteers a big hand for their success on stage!

------------------------------------------------------==> Funny Routines in the Medium State of Hypnosis <==

-------------------------------------------------------

Once you have given the formal induction and after the waking
hypnosis exercises, you may begin integrating the following routines
into your shows.

111

Always use showmanship and involve the audience as much as you

can. The audience wants activity and not a seminar. Keep it light and
move quickly from one routine to the next.

-----------------------------------==> Altering the Sense of Smell <==

-----------------------------------(This routine will be great fun! This works just as well on adults as it
does for high school students. You begin after you have hypnotized
the group and everyone is concentrating in hypnosis. Let's begin)
In a moment I am going to count to three. When I count three your
eyes will open and a couple of strange things will happen.
Number one, every time you hear me say the word red, you will
notice a foul smell coming from the person sitting next to you.
Now you won't want to embarrass the person but you will try to slide
your chair away from that horrible smell.
Secondly, each time you hear me say the word "green," everything
will smell wonderful, as if you are out in a wonderful forest.
All right now, one, two three.
(NOW TURN TO THE AUDIENCE AND ADDRESS THEM DURING
THE ENTIRE ROUTINE AND GLANCE PERIDICALLY AT YOUR
VOLUNTEERS TO MAKE SURE NOBODY SLIDES HIS/HER CHAIR
OFF THE STAGE. THE SAFTEY OF YOUR VOLUNTEERS
SHOULD BE YOUR NUMBER ONE CONCERN)
112

Audience, I need your help. I am shopping for a new car right now
and I have no idea what color to order.
Do I have any suggestions from the audience?
(PEOPLE IN THE AUDIENCE WILL SHOUT RED OR GREEN.
WHEN YOU HEAR AN AUDIENCE MEMBER SAY RED, POINT TO
THE PERSON AND SAY...)
Red, I think that is a great color. Red, yes I think I will buy a red car.
(NOW YOUR VOLUNTEERS ARE HOLDING THEIR NOSES AND
TRYING TO MOVE AWAY FROM THE PERSON SITTING NEXT TO
THEM. THE AUDIENCE WILL BE LAUGHING HYSTERICALLY.
JUST AS THE LAUGHTER IS BUILDINE CONTINUE WITH THE
AUDIENCE BY SAYING...)
You know, I think instead of read I want to order a green car. Yes, I
think green will be great. Don't you think that green is a great color?
(THE VOLUNTEERS WILL NOW MOVE THEIR CHAIRS BACK
CLOSE TOGETHER AND SOME MAY EVEN COMMENT ON HOW
NICE THEIR NEIGHBORS SMELL. YOUR AUDIENCE WILL BE
LAUGHING HYSTERICALLY AT THIS POINT. KEEP UP THE
DIALOG WITH THE AUDIENCE, FOCUSSING YOUR ATTENTION
ON THE AUDIENCE AND KEEPING EYE CONTACT WITH YOUR
VOLUNTEERS)
Yes, green is a great color. But many of you in the audience like the
color red. With a show of hands, members of the audience, how
many of you like the color red?
Okay red it is.
No, I just changed my mind. Green is a great color.
Volunteers on stage, focus your attention on me. I am pointing my
finger directly at your forehead, go deep asleep.

113

Everything smells fine now. Everything smells pleasant. You feel find
as you are going deeper and sounder asleep.
Audience, give the volunteers a big hand!

------------------------------------==> Playing Musical Instruments <==

------------------------------------Volunteers, in a moment I am going to count to three. When I count
three a strange thing will happen. You will be a musician in a band.
You will find an imaginary musical instrument in your hands. You will
play the musical instrument and it will be easy and fun
All right, one, two, three, play your instrument.
(AT THIS POINT EACH MEMBER WILL BEGIN PLAYING HIS/HER
OWN INSTRUMENT. GO UP TO EACH MEMBER AND ASK
114

HIM/HER WHAT INSTRUMENT AND TO PLAY A SONG FOR

EVERYONE. THE AUDIENCE WILL FIND THIS GREAT FUN. IF
YOUR SHOW IS SCHEDULED FOR 6O MINUTES OR MORE,
AFTER YOU HAVE ASKED EACH MEMBER TO DEMONSTRATE
PLAYING INSTRUMENTS, YOU CAN TELL YOUR BAND TO
MARCH OUT INTO THE AUDIENCE, SINGLE FILE AND
CONTINUE TO PLAY. YOU WOULD SUGGEST THAT ADDED
SECTION BY USING THE FOLLOWING SUGGESTIONS)
Volunteers go out into the audience single file, and play your
instruments. When you arrive back on the stage you will immediately
sit down on your chair and go deeper and sounder asleep.

-------------------------------==> The Heavy Chair <==

-------------------------------(FOR THIS ROUTINE, YOU ARE GOING TO USE 2 OF YOUR
LARGEST GENTLEMEN AND ONE OF YOUR SMALLEST LADIES.
MAKE SURE THEY ARE RESPONDING WELL TO YOUR
PREVIOUS ROUTINES. SET UP A CHAIR NEAR YOUR
MICROPHONE IN THE CENTER OF THE STAGE SO THAT
EVERYONE IN THE AUDIENCE CAN WITNESS THIS ROUTINE.
YOU SINGLE OUT VOLUNTEERS TO PERFORM ROUTINES BY
GOING UP TO EACH VOLUNTEER, TOUCHING THEIR BACKS
AND SAYING THE FOLLOWING)

I am talking to you sir. My hand is on your back and you are going
deeper and sounder asleep.
In a moment I am going to count to three, when I count three I am
going to ask you to pick up the heaviest chair in the world. It will look
like an ordinary chair but it will be impossible to pick up.
When I snap my fingers by your ear, it will be a normal chair again
and will be easy to pick up.
115

(GIVE THE SAME SUGGESTION TO THE SECOND MALE

VOLUNTEER AND NOW YOU WILL TOUCH THE LADY
VOLUNTEER ON HER BACK AND SAY THE FOLLOWING)
I am talking to you. My hand is on your back and you are going
deeper and sounder to sleep.
In a moment I am going to count to three. When I count three your
eyes will open and I will ask you to pick up a chair. When I ask you to
pick up that chair it will be very easy to pick up.
All right everyone on stage, one, two, three, eyes open.
You two gentlemen come up by this chair and help me pick it up,
please.
(THE TWO MEN WILL STRUGGLE. THEY WILL GRUNT AND
GROAN BUT THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO LIFT THE CHAIR.
NOW ASK THE LADY TO PICK UP THE CHAIR AND SHE WILL DO
IT EASILY.
THE MEN WILL LOOK VERY CONFUSED. SNAP YOUR FINGERS
BY THEIR EARS, ASK THEM HOW THEY FEEL AND SEND THEM
BACK INTO THEIR SEATS. TURN TO THE AUDIENCE AND SAY)
Let's give them a big hand. Weren't they great?

--------------------------------------------------==> AGE PROGRESSION OR TIME TRAVEL <==

----------------------------------------------------------------------------==> A note from Wayne <==
---------------------------

116

Here is a great routine that I personally invented. I want you to have

this routine as it demonstrates one of the most interesting effects of
hypnosis.
Everyone and I mean everyone is interested in hypnotic age
regression. Hypnotic age regression is brining a person back in time.
However are you aware that you can move a person forward through
time? I call this time travel or age progression.
Use this routine right after a routine that has a lot of movement or
action.
This routine is used more for its amazement entertainment rather
than entertainment for laughs. It makes a great pause in an exciting,
fast moving show.
I will continue with the age progression routine. I begin with the
members on stage concentrating in hypnosis.

-----------------------==> Age Progression <==

-----------------------Members of the audience, you have all heard of hypnotic age
regression. This is the fact that a person can be brought back into
time and relive memories. Those memories may be of this life or of
previous lives.
Hypnotic volunteers can mover forward through time. I call this
phenomena, age progression or time travel.
117

(NOW ADDRESS THE VOLUNTEERS)

Volunteers on stage, in a moment I am going to count to three. When
I count three you will move forward into time and you will be 85 years
old. You will walk and talk and be yourself at 85 years of age.
All right one, two, three, eyes open.

(INTERVIEW EACH VOLUNTEER. ASK EACH MEMBER

QUESTIONS LIKE, WHAT'S YOUR NAME? HOW OLD ARE YOU?
WHAT DID YOU DO FOR A LIVING WHEN YOU WERE
YOUNGER?)
(VOLUNTEERS WILL BEGIN TO TELL A STORE SO ASK THEM
TO SPEAK INTO YOUR MICROPHONE. IF YOU USE A
MICROHONE STAND OR PODIUM, YOU MAY ASK ONE OR TWO
OF THE VOLUNTEERS TO WALK OVER TO THE MICROPHONE
STAND OR PODIUM. MANY OF THE VOLUNTEERS WILL WALK
AS OLD MEN AND WOMEN. SOME WILL EXPERIENCE
PARALYSIS ON ONE SIDE OF THEIR FACE OR BODY. YOU MAY
HAVE TO PHYSICALLY HELP EACH OF THOSE VOLUNTEERS
TO AND FROM THEIR CHAIRS. AT THE CONSLUSION OF THE
ROUTINE YOU WILL SAY THE FOLLOWING)

Volunteers, close your eyes down tight and go deeper and sounder
asleep.
You are now back to the current time and place here at _____
______. You feel good, you feel fine, you feel perfectly relaxed.

All of the memory of the 85-year-old experience is gone now. You are
back to normal.
Go deeper and sounder asleep.

118

-------------------------------------------------6.2. Exercises for Further Learning

--------------------------------------------------

Study each routine and weave each into your show.

As soon as you have these routines practiced, you will be able to
demonstrate hypnosis for at least 45 minutes to an hour.
Extend your free party shows from 20-30 minutes to 45 minutes or
longer.
Always remember that you need to communicate with the audience
as well as communicating with the volunteers.
This is entertainment.
For further learning, introduce additional stage "patter" to use on your
audience to keep them interested in your show.
I wish you success in your expanded shows!

Lesson Seven:
Additional Stage Routines

Table of Contents
7.0 Introduction--------------7.1 Stage Hypnosis Routines ------7.2 Exercises for Further Learning---------7.3 Summary ------------

122

7.0 Introduction

The purpose of this lesson is to expand your show so you can deliver
a one to a 60 to 90 minute show.
Most major events at colleges and universities as well as large
comedy clubs will require a 90-minute show.
Also, you need more material in the event you are performing for a
week or two at a state fair or large hotel.
People will come back frequently during your two or four week gig.
You need more material to give your fans variety as well as well as
keeping you from getting bored.
You have a great deal to learn as a stage hypnotist.
Even though you learn something new at every performance, a sense
of boredom can overtake you and it will be reflected in your
showmanship.
You want to be as enthusiastic as your volunteers and your audience
members.
You will now go ahead and learn some great stage hypnosis routines
that will keep your fans asking for more.

You must firmly believe that each subject is in your control and will be
responsive.

Begin to make up your own routines, as you get confidence practicing

and working in these.

123

7.1 Stage Hypnosis Routines

---------------------------------------

The following are great routines to use after you have hypnotized
your volunteers and they have completed 3 or 4 of your other
routines.

----------------------==> Funny Glasses <==

-----------------------

(You will need a pair of cheap wire or plastic eyeglasses. Take the
lenses out so you only have the frames. You are going to create an
effect that will allow the volunteers to see through the clothes of
everyone in the audience)

Volunteers, as you sit in your chairs you are going deeper and
sounder asleep. Nothing will awake you until I awake you, nothing will
disturb you, just concentrate on the sound of my voice.
In a moment I am going to count to three. When I count three you are
going to open your eyes and a strange thing will happen. I am going
to give you some magic glasses.
When you look through these glasses you will be able to see through
the clothes of everyone in the audience. It may seem shocking right
away but it will be a lot of fun seeing your friends in the audience
without any clothes on.
Now, one, two, three, eyes open.

124

(HAND THE GLASSES TO A VOLUNTEER WHO IS VERY

DEMONSTRATIVE. TELL HIM/HER TO PUT ON THE GLASSES
AND LOOK OUT INTO THE AUDIENE. ASK YOUR VOLUNTEERS
TO TELL EVERYONE WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING AT. YOU WILL
FIND THAT THE AUDIENCE AS WELL AS THE VOLUNTEERS
WILL MAKE THIS ROUTINE VERY, VERY FUNNY)

------------------------------------==> Moon Talk <==

------------------------------------This is a very funny routine where you will use two of your best
subjects. It is best to use include this routine near the end of your
show as you want the very best subjects possible to be the "stars" of
your show.
You are going to interview the Man from the Moon for all of your
audience to hear.
How it works is, you will use two participants. One will only speak the
language of the Moon. He or she will not be able to speak or
understand English.

125

The second person will be able to speak Moon talk fluently as well as
English.
This will be your translator.
Every once in a while your translator will not be able to understand
Moon Talk. If that happens, immediately hypnotize the other
volunteers on stage and repeat the suggestions to your potential
translator as you did for the first translator that did not work out.
Remember that you can use the post-hypnotic cue of pointing you
finger at the forehead of any of the remaining volunteers on stage.
Now I will proceed with the suggestions for your volunteers.
Right now all of your volunteers have finished a routine and have
their eyes closed down, resting in hypnosis.

-----------------Man from the Moon

-----------------I am talking to you sir. My hand is on your shoulder and you are going
deeper and sounder into hypnosis.
In a moment I am going to count to three. When I count three, your
eyes will open and a strange thing will happen.
You will speak the language of the Moon called Moon Talk, because
you are the Man from the Moon. You won't be able to understand
English when it is spoken to you. You will only understand your
translator who will speak English and also Moon Talk.
You will speak Moon talk until I snap my finger by your ear. When I
snap my finger by your ear, you will speak and understand English
again.

126

-----------------Translator
-----------------My hand is on your shoulder and I am talking to you. (Miss or Sir) In a
moment I am going to count to three. When I count three your eyes
will open and a strange thing will happen. You will find a visitor from
the Moon on stage and you will be able to speak and translate Moon
talk in English so every one in the audience will understand.
When I snap my fingers by your ear, you won't remember how to talk
Moon Talk anymore.

----------------------------------------For all of the other volunteers on stage

-----------------------------------------

For the rest of the volunteers on stage, at the count of three your
eyes will open and you will enjoy the interview with the Man from the
Moon.

All right, one, two get ready to see the Man from the Moon, three
eyes open.

Ladies and Gentlemen in the audience, we have a very special guest

today. We have the Man from the Moon.
Let's get him a big hand for agreeing to an interview.

(GO UP TO THE TRANSLATOR, ASK HIM/HER TO JOIN YOU BY

THE PODIUM OR MICROPHONE STAND, AND ASK THE VISTOR
FROM THE MOON, USING MOON TALK TO COME UP AND JOIN
US. THE TRANSLATOR WILL MAKE SOME STRANGE SOUNDS,
MOTIONING TO THE MAN FROM THE MOON, AND BOTH WILL
BE STANDING BY YOU, FOR THE INTERVIEW)
127

--------------------------------------Questions you can use for the Interview

---------------------------------------

What is your name?

Where are you from?

How long did it take you to reach our planet?

How many people live on the Moon?

What kind of work do you do, living on the Moon?

When are you going back to the Moon?

----------------------------A Note from Wayne

----------------------------The exchange between the translator and the Moon Man will be
hilarious. The Moon man make sounds like grunts and the translator
may make sounds like beeps, but both will seem to understand each
other.

128

--------Continue
--------When you are finished with the interview, snap your fingers by the
moon man and say in English, "What is your name?"
The Moon Man will look a little confused, but will say his name in
English and then ask him to go back to his seat on stage and go deep
asleep.
Now snap your fingers by the ear of the translator and ask his/her
name, say thank you and send the translator back to the chair on
stage and say, "go deep asleep."
For the rest of the volunteers on stage, I am pointing my finger
directly at your forehead; you are going deeper and sounder into
hypnosis.

------------==> Notes <==

------------Use this space to create your own questions for the Interview with the
Man from the Moon.
You may want to use the same routine but change it to be an
Interview with the Man or Woman from Mars or some other planet.
If there is something in the news about a new planet that was just
discovered it would be great showmanship to adjust your show to
reflect a newsworthy event.

129

-------------------------------==> The Invisible Man <==

--------------------------------

The purpose of the routine is to make yourself completely invisible to

your volunteers on stage.
You can do this exercise with the entire group or just one individual
Remember that creating invisibility is creating a negative visual
hallucination for your volunteers.
This is an effect that will work best if it is used near the middle or the
end of the show. You will want your volunteers to have many
successes in your other routines before you try this one.

I am talking to you sir. My hand is on your back and you are going
deeper and sounder asleep.
In a moment I am going to count to three, when I count three I am
going find something very strange.
I am going to be the Invisible Man. You will hear my voice but you will
not be able to see me. I will be completely invisible.
If I pick up an item you will see that item floating in space. You will not
see me. When I snap my fingers by your ear, you will see me once
again.
All right, one, two three open your eyes.

(WALK ON EITHER SIDE OF THE VOLUNTEER AND BEGIN TO

ASK QUESTIONS. HE WILL LOOK IN AMAZEMENT AS HE WILL
HEARS YOUR VOICE BUT CANNOT FIGURE OUT WHERE YOUR
130

VOICE IS COMING FROM. THIS IS CALLED A NEGATIVE

HALLUCINATION. IN REALITY, YOUR VOLUNTEER HAS TO
KNOW YOUR ARE PHYSICALLY THERE IN ORDER NOT TO SEE
YOU. PRACTICE DEVELOPING YOUR OWN QUESTIONS. PICK
UP AN OBJECT LIKE A DRINKING GLASS OR A MAGIC WAND OR
A HANKERCHEIF AND MOVE IT PAST YOUR VOLUNTEER
WITHOUT SAYING A WORD. IT WILL APPEAR AS IF YOUR
DRINKING GLASS, MAGIC WAND OR HANKERCHIEF IS MOVING
SILENTLY THROUGH SPACE. THE OBJECTS WILL BE FLOATING
IN SPACE. WHEN YOU ARE READY TO RELEASE YOUR
SUBJECT FROM THE EFFECT, JUST SNAP YOUR FINGERS BY
HIS EAR)

131

---------------------------------------------------

==> Invisible Audience <==

--------------------------------------------------This is a spin off of the Invisible Man, only this time you will tell your
sleeping volunteers on stage that at the count of three they will open
their eyes and everyone in the audience will be gone. Everyone in the
audience will be gone. They will not see or hear the audience. They
will only hear the voice of the hypnotist.

Here is how you will direct your volunteers.

-------------Begin now
------------Volunteers, at the count of three you will be wide-awake and alert.
But a strange thing will happen. You will notice that everyone in the
audience is gone. You will not see or hear anyone in the audience.
This will make you angry as you expected your friends to be here
during the entire performance.
All right, one, two three eyes open.

Where is everyone? (GO BY EACH OF YOUR VOLUNTEERS ON

STAGE AND ASK EACH MEMBER WHY NO ONE IS OUT IN THE
AUDIENCE. THEY WILL COME UP WITH SOME VERY CREATIVE
ANSWERS. AFTER YOU HAVE RECEIVED SUFFICIENT LAUGHS,
CONTINUE WITH CLOSING OUT THE ROUTINE)
All right volunteers, I am pointing my finger at your forehead, close
your eyes and go deeper and sounder asleep.
When you open your eyes again today, you will see the audience.
132

--------------------------==> A note from Wayne <==

---------------------------

Begin to create your own variations of this routine. Write some

questions below that will enable you to bring out more responses
from the volunteers.

-----------------------==> The Horse Race <==

-----------------------(FOR THIS ROUTING YOU WILL TOUCH EACH VOLUNTEER ON
THE BACK AND ASSIGN A NUMBER. FOR EXAMPLE YOU WILL
TOUCH THE FIRST PERSON AND SAY "YOU ARE NUMBER ONE"
THEN THE NEXT PERSON, "YOU ARE NUMBER TWO AND SO
133

ON. AS SOON AS YOU HAVE ASSIGNED NUMBERS TO

EVERYONE CONTINUE WITH YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ALL OF
THE VOLUNTEERS)
Volunteers, I have assigned a number to each of you. This number
will be the number of your racehorse. At the count of three you will be
wide-awake and alert but a strange thing will happen.
You will be at the horserace and you will be cheering on your favorite
horse. The louder you yell the faster your horse will run. You have
just bet all of your money on your horse and you will be yelling and
cheering on your horse.

All right one, two, three, eyes open.

All right your horses are at the gate. Now they are off!
Here comes number one, followed by number four and number five.
Now here comes number seven and number eight.
Seven and eight are neck and neck.
(AS YOU CONTINUE YOUR VOLUNTEERS WILL BE STANDING
UP AND SHOUTING FOR THEIR HORSES)
Now nine and ten are tied, they are running faster and faster. One,
two and five are neck and neck at the turn.
All of the horses are running faster and faster as they are coming
down the stretch toward the finish line.
The horses are across the finish line and there is a tie. There is a
photo finish with all of the horses crossing the line at the same time.
Sit down in your chairs, close your eyes and go back into hypnosis.
The memory of the horserace is fading as you go deeper and
sounder asleep.

Lesson Eight:
Additional Stage Routines

Table of Contents
8.0 Introduction--------------8.1 The Magic of the Stage ------8.2 Communicating With the Audience---------8.3 Exercises for Further Learning -----------8.4 Summary-----------

140

8.0 Introduction
-------------------------------------------------------------

Now you should have a wonderful show put together. You have
enough material for small parties and large major events. Always
practice your routines before you try them out in front of an audience.
You will have to try them out by yourself in front of a mirror but that
will be sufficient.
As you are practicing, picture your volunteers as well as your
audience as if they were right there with you.
The purpose of this lesson is to help you fine-tune your act and make
it your best.

--------------------------8.1 The Magic of the Stage

---------------------------The stage set-up is very hypnotic in nature.
When you hypnotize people, expectation of the audience is enhanced
just by your presence on stage.
After all, who would get a job performing hypnosis in front of
hundreds or thousands of people unless he/she was a genuine
hypnotist?
If you were a member of an audience during a hypnotism
performance and are watching a man stand in front of some empty
chairs and claim that in a few minutes, people will be doing all kinds
of funny things, do you have any reason to doubt him?
141

I think not.
The stage itself is very mystifying.
Usually the house lights will be turned down during your introduction.
There may be only a single spotlight on you as you explain the magic
of hypnosis.
This makes for a powerful theatrical effect.
As you ask for volunteers, the lights on stage will get brighter and
many people will rush to make sure they will get chosen to remain on
stage and become hypnotized.
Once you start working with the volunteers, the stage lights may be
turned down. This will happen while you are giving your first hypnotic
induction. After you finish your induction and while the volunteers are
performing, the stage lights will once again become brighter.
----------------------==> What do I wear? <==
----------------------Every professional hypnotist wants to look good. You are expected to
look like a professional entertainer.
When you are performing at a party, you want to be one of the bestdressed individuals at the party.
When you are performing at a high school you want to wear
professional business attire.
In the United States, where I live, most high school teachers do not
wear business suits and ties. They opt for conservative attire but not
what I would term "business attire."
If you are performing at a high school in the United States, you will
want to wear professional business attire that for men includes a
business suit.
142

Women will wear a business outfit or something very conservative.

Make sure your clothes reflect success because you will allow your
audience and volunteers to accept you as a successful entertainer.

In many cases for large college events I will wear a tuxedo with tails.
You are dressing for your volunteers and your audience. If they see
an individual that is dressed like them, it will be hard for them to
accept you as a powerful professional hypnotist.
Even though you will be dressed professionally, you will be very
active on stage.
You will be pacing back and forth along the line of chairs filled with
your volunteers and you will have very active hand and arm
movements.
The reason you will be pacing is you need to know if anyone is faking
hypnosis or creating a disturbance for the rest of the volunteers. You
need to remove trouble makers as quickly as possible.
There will be a great deal of people seated near the back of the room
that will not see you unless you use very "big" gestures as you are
directing your volunteers on stage.
Think of an orchestra director. You will be directing your volunteers
much like an orchestra director.
The symphony you will be playing will be the symphony tilted "The
Magic of the Mind."

143

------------------------------------------------------==> What time should I arrive for my performance? <==

-------------------------------------------------------

You should arrive early. I will arrive an hour before a performance in

my hometown.
When I am traveling I arrive a day early and contact the meeting
planner on my arrival date.
This gives me time to do extra publicity with local radio or TV stations
or interviews with the local newspapers.
You will learn in a later lesson how to use publicity to your advantage
in building excitement for your stage hypnotism show.
You will also learn how to use publicity to create additional income
streams as a hypnotist.

-----------Stage Props
-----------Make sure you always have a bag to carry your stage props.
If you own a cordless microphone, you may want to include one in
your bag even if you are performing at a venue that supplies its own
sound system.
Every now and then, there is a problem with the supplied sound
system and the show must go on, with or without sound.

144

If your cordless microphone has batteries, also include extra

batteries.
Bring extra business cards and flyers. You never know who is going
to be enjoying your show and will recommend you for additional
bookings.
If you sell books, tapes or CDs, make sure you put extra stock in your
prop bag.

-----------------------------------8.2 Communicating With the Audience

------------------------------------

How do I communicate with the audience?

The best way to learn how to communicate with an audience is to
learn from the masters of audience communication.
Check out your local newspaper for speaking events hosted by public
speakers. Attend those events and take notes.
Every time an audience responds favorably to a speaker, write down
what he/she said and how the audience reacted.
Don't use the speaker's stories and anecdotes. Create your own. But
make sure you note the kinds of stories audiences enjoy.
Make sure you note the kinds of one-liners that go over well in a
crowd.

145

Also, listen to friends that tell you about their church. Attend a church
service or two with your friends and take notes on how the speaker is
received.
If you have comedy clubs in your area, frequent them to learn how to
work an audience.

It is very difficult to thy to "wing it" with an audience. You need to

know the type of audience you are performing in front of and you
want to relate stories and anecdotes on their level.
Your performance in front of a college audience will have a different
feel than one in front of a high school audience.
Make sure you are politically correct and you do not offend people
because of race, color, religion or national origin.
Always treat everyone with courtesy and respect. You will have
people that will want to argue with you that you are a fraud. Let them
have their say and thank them afterward.
Always remember that if you shout back, you will have lost the
argument. Everyone in the audience thinks you are a powerful leader.
Seldom do powerful leaders resort to a shouting match. You must be
calm under pressure.

-------------------------------------------------8.3 Exercises for Further Learning

--------------------------------------------------

Make a checklist of things you need to remember to bring to each

performance.
Make copies of the checklist and always keep a copy in your prop

As you book performances, think of more things you can add to the
list to make your show a spectacular event!

Lesson Nine:
Pricing For High School Assembly
Programs

Table of Contents
9.0 Introduction--------------9.1 Pricing Strategies ------9.2 Contracts---------9.3 Exercises for Further Learning -----------9.4 Summary-----------

152

9.0 Introduction

What do I charge for my show?

This is a good question. Pricing depends upon 3 factors.
1. What you think you are worth.
2. What the person who is booking you thinks you are worth.
3. Budget considerations of the group or organization that is booking
you.
4. Single or multiple shows.
5. Other opportunities to earn money from your show.

A stage hypnotism performance is like no other in show business. It

always involves the unpredictable behavior of people.
For that feature alone, you should charge more than magicians,
musicians and other artists whose performances are always canned
and well rehearsed.
It is very difficult for most entertainers to fail if they have memorized
their material so well that they do not have to think about what they
are doing.
Hypnotism brings on the element of danger. You are always working
with people you do not know. You have no idea how well or how
poorly they will understand and accept your suggestions.

153

Risk brings reward. The entertaining stage hypnotism show is the

riskiest show in existence so it should and does bring great rewards.
Let's go ahead a price your professional stage hypnotism show!

--------------------------9.1 Pricing Strategies

---------------------------Since you have already learned how to put together a show to last
more than 45 minutes, you should be ready to price your stage
hypnotism show for high schools.

In the United States where I live, stage hypnotism shows are suitable
for students ages 12-19 which generally means middle school, junior
high school and high school.
These shows will be in the form of school assembly programs.
Public schools in the United States run on a very strict timing
arrangement.
If the school principal or administrator that books your show says they
have 42 minutes for your performance, then make sure your show is
over and you are sending your volunteers back in 42 minutes.
You will be welcome back year after year if you are respectful and
honor the school's strict schedule.
When a school administrator or a student council member asks you
the price for your performance, ask these questions before you quote
a price.

154

1. How many students will be attending the event?

2. Where are you located?
3. How many shows do you want me to perform?
4. What time a day to you normally have your event?

5. What is your budget for an assembly program?

Keep these questions by your telephone and in your office as you

want these questions to roll off of your tongue very easily.

The reason you want to know how many students are attending the
event is that schools have budgets based on how many students they
have enrolled.
If the school only has 300 or fewer students, they normally will only
have a couple of hundred dollars to spend on an event.
If you find out how many students will be attending from the high
school student council member who is inquiring, you can ask if the
Junior High School or Middle School in the same school district can
attend as well. You will make it clear that your show will be suitable
for both schools.

Wait until you get all of the information before you quote a price.
I guarantee you will earn more money if you follow this strategy.

155

Schools with less than 300 Students

---------------------------------------------Think $1.00 per student per performance at this level. Smaller
schools have little or no budget. But if you get administrators thinking
of $1.00 per person, that is a very cheap price to pay for such fine
entertainment.

Fee $300.00
Offer the school representative a show for the junior high school
students as well as the high school students if the school
representative says your price is too high.
---------------------------------------------------------What can I charge for 2 Shows presented on the same day?
---------------------------------------------------------Most school districts will have two or more high schools and 3 or
more junior high schools located in the same region.
Off a discount for 2 or more shows presented in the same day.

So for a school in a district where most of the schools have 300 or

fewer students you can offer the following.

1 hypnotism show

$300.00

2 Hypnotism shows presented the same day: $500.00

------------------------------------------------------==> Schools with more than 300 students enrollment <==

156

------------------------------------------------------Schools with more than 300 students have bigger budgets. In fact
many schools will charge their students between $2.00 and $4.00
each to attend your assembly. They are usually trying to raise funds
for other events.
So we need to start at a much higher fee than the smaller schools.
A fee of $600.00-$2000.00 US would be appropriate for larger
schools. Since you are just starting out, you may want to start at the
lower fee. If you have a great distance to travel and have to stay
overnight at a hotel or book an airline flight, you need to charge the
higher fee.

Here is a typical fee schedule that you would send to an interested

party from a large high school.
The interested party will either be a student who is on the student
council committee, a student council advisor, or a principal of the
school.
Usually you will meet all three of these individuals before or directly
after your performance.

----------------------------------------==> Fee Schedule for Large Schools <==

-----------------------------------------

Stage performance fee for one show: $600.00

Stage performance fee for two shows $900.00
(If both performances are held on the same day)
Factors in travel costs before you send the contract.
157

Include airfare, transportation, lodging etc.

When I travel out of state to do shows I will add a thousand dollars to
my fee because I will stay overnight in a hotel so I can be fresh on the
day of the performance.

--------------------------------------------------------Fees for Schools Where You will incur air travel expenses
----------------------------------------------------------

Stage performance fee for One show $1600.00

Stage performance fee for Two Shows $1900.00
(If both performances are held on the same day)

The above fees are quoted for stage hypnotists with less that a year's
experience.
After you have worked and traveled for a year you should be charging
the following.

Stage performance for One Show

$2400.00

Stage performance for Two Shows

$3600.00

Stage performance for Three Shows $4200.00

158

9.2 Elements of the Booking Contract

----------------------------------------------------

Here are the 5 elements of a stage hypnotism contract.

1. Name or names of the booking party who is usually the school
principal.

2. School name and address.

3. Date and time of the performance

4. Schedule of payment for your fee and the amount of your fee.

5. Signatures

I have listed one of my sample contracts below. Make sure you

Lesson Ten: Pricing For College

Major Event Programs
Table of Contents
10.0 Introduction--------------10.1 Pricing Strategies ------10.2 Contracts---------10.3 Exercises for Further Learning -----------10.4 Summary-----------

163

10.0 Introduction
------------------------------------------------------------Now it is time to really think big.
From the last lesson you can understand that even by performing at
smaller schools, you can earn $300-$500 a day performing stage
hypnotism shows.
In the United States there are usually 180 days in a school year.
That means that if you were to book just one show per school day at
smaller schools, you would gross $54,000 per year.
If you were to book large schools and many of those schools were
located within a few hours flying distance from your home you would
gross $ 288,000 per school year.
Can you imagine if you book two or more shows per day, every
school day?
I love performing at high schools but I really love performing at
Community Colleges, Small Four-Year Colleges and of course, major
universities.
There is something about a big paycheck that allows you to perform
at a greater level of expertise. Also the audiences are really pumped
because of all of the advance publicity via college radio, TV,
Newspaper and printed flyers and brochures.
The added hype about your show that can appear as early as one
year in advance adds to the excitement and success of your stage
performance.

When I became a professional hypnotist back in 1977, my strategy

was to work high schools for about 4 or 5 years and then graduate to
the big time by marketing myself to colleges.
164

But I was in for a big surprise.

After my very first show that was held at Plano High School in Plano,
Illinois, I received a call from the student organization at Waubonsee
College in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
One of the teachers at Plano High School was also on the staff at
Waubonsee College and persuaded the Associated Student
Organization to book me with a show.
So within just a few weeks of performing my first high school stage
hypnotism show, I had a college performance under my belt.
The same thing can happen to you if you are open to it.

165

10.1 Pricing Strategies

You will need a 60-90 minute show to perform at the college level.
Make sure you really have a great deal of material because many of
the people in attendance will be psychology students and psychology
professors.
Many of the professors use hypnosis in their private practices and will
be looking for ways to help their clients based on some of the
phenomena you produce.
You never know how many people you will inspire directly and
indirectly as a result of your college show.
You will not only earn great money but also help many people
through your successful and memorable demonstration.

166

What do I charge for College

Performances?

College fees are all over the chart. It is possible to earn more money
at a small private liberal arts college than a major university
performing before thousands of people.
Size doesn't always make a difference.
The best question to ask the college representative is, "How much do
you budget for an event like this one?"
Listen carefully as the person booking the show may give you a
yearly budget for all speakers. Some of those speakers will be expresidents or major entertainers.
The question, "How much do you budget for and event like this one,"
will generally give you a ballpark figure that will be accurate.

167

The group that will book you will normally be called Associated
Students. Associated Students is the students governing body much
like a student council in a high school environment.
Once the speakers associated student representative has your flyer,
brochure and contract, he will bring the information before the
Speaker's Board at the university.
The Speaker Board will vote on whether they book you or not for a
major event.

What Size Fees Can I expect for a

College Major Event?
Generally you can expect speaker fees of $1,000 up to $10,000 for a
single performance.
Many performers charge a fee and then bill the school for normal and
customary expenses after the performance.
I don't like to bill that way because once you have given the
performance it is a long and drawn out process to get paid on your
expenses.
I prefer to bill one fee inclusive of all travel expenses. Travel
expenses to colleges and universities will include airfare,
transportation costs, lodging and food.
Since I like to arrive at the college 24 hours in advance of the
performance to accommodate radio, tv, and newspaper interviews, I

168

need to charge more because I am locking up 2 days out of my

schedule for a single stage show.

Therefore I start out at the $3,500 level and include all expenses,
even if it is a small school.
In Lesson 11 will show you how to negotiate with schools and clubs if
you cannot arrive at your specified fee.
In this lesson however, I will make it simple and give you the
ingredients on how much to ask for when booking college shows.

169

Fee Schedule for College Hypnotism

Shows
Fee for my Stage Hypnotism Show
Inclusive of all expenses:
$3500.00

Length of the show is one and one-half hours

---------------------------------------------------10.2 Elements of the Booking Contract

----------------------------------------------------

With the college contract or fee agreement I will also need a light man
and I try to get 1/3 of the fee forwarded to me to pay my travel
expenses.
This is a common strategy to cement the date. Once the school has
invested $1000.00 in your show, they are more likely to really give it
the promotion it deserves.
Also, it is a lot easier to get your expense money on the front end
rather than billing the school after the show and tracking down your
invoices.
I ask for 1/3 down to hold the booking and 2/3 of the amount to be
paid in full on the night of the performance.
You will normally get your 1/3 in advance. When an entertainer goes
through a booking agent the agent usually gets 20-30% upfront and

170

you get paid at the performance. So the schools are used to paying
fees in advance.
However, if you are not well known and are booking yourself, be
prepared to pay for all of your expenses in advance and you will get
100% of your fee at the venue the night of your performance.

Show

176

Table of Contents
11.0 Introduction--------------11.1 Brochures ------11.2 One-Sheets---------11.3 References and Testimonials -----------11.4 Videos----------11.5 Exercises for Further Learning

177

11.0 Introduction
Now it is time to market your show!
Unfortunately, this is the part that is very difficult for most stage
hypnotists.
Actually it is the most difficult part of any business.
You will have a great deal of competition out there. Your competition
may not be other hypnotists. Your competition will be in the form of
stage bands, magicians, comedians, and sports personalities.
There are also many professional speakers who present very
entertaining shows to corporate parties and professional
associations.
These speakers have very polished acts and are very professional.
You will have to create copy for your flyers and one-sheets that will
compete against the superstars.
It is a big job, but the payoff is big as well.
Good luck!

178

11.1 Brochures
Brochures are documents that usually include a picture, a description
of your show, pricing and testimonials.
A typical brochure is developed out of 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper stock
and folded into thirds
The purpose of a brochure is to get a qualified contact at a school,
association or corporation to contact you for a booking contract.
The contact with you will usually be by telephone.
Nowadays, however, e-mail is a great way to qualify a contact and
get the booking process started.
Instead of giving you a course on how to create brochures, I suggest
that you send for brochures from entertaining speakers, magicians,
and other stage acts.
When you receive these brochures, make sure you create a file and
then spend a few hours during the way evaluating each one in its
design and content.
When you view each brochure, ask yourself if you would be moved to
call this entertainer based on the design, color and format of the
brochure.
If you are moved to buy, so will others.
Then start shopping around at local print shops and get samples of
their brochures and pricing.
Brochures can be created in a way to use as a self-mailer. This may
be useful if you want to save money.
Also, if you live in the United States, you can apply for bulk postal
rates if you pledge to send out so many brochures during a year.

179

Responses from mail are usually only around 1%. If you want 10
schools to contact you from your campaign of sending out brochures,
you will have to send brochures to over 1000 contacts.

Repetition of mailings generates more contacts as well, so you need

to send brochures out at least once a month.
If you are sending mailings out to schools, then send those out only
during the school year.

180

11.2 One Sheets

A One Sheet is a unique marketing tool in that you can use is as a

brochure in mailing but it can be faxed, which saves you printing and
mailing expense.
A one sheet contains to following:
1. Your picture which should only take no more than up 2 inches by 3
inches of paper space
2. A headline which grabs the reader and gives them a benefit.
For example, "Amaze Yourself and Witness an Authentic Hypnotism
Show" or "Watch Your Friends Become Hypnotized"
3. A Brief description of your program
4. Testimonials
5. Your contact information that includes, phone, fax and mail and email.
6. If you want to save a step, you may even include pricing. I
personally would only include pricing if I am sending out one-sheets
for one specific region where I have no travel expenses.
There are three major advantages to a one sheet.
1. The sheet can be faxed to your prospect that will expedite the
process of getting approved by the decision-makers for your stage
hypnotism show.
2. This is the most common contact form that booking agents and
meeting professionals use. They want short, concise bits of
181

information which are easier to find on one page than on a brochure

which includes 3 or 4 folds of information.
3. Since it is only one page, you can change the information often, or
experiment with replacing the text or pictures with a word processor.
In most cases you will not need to go to a brochure printer to
accomplish this.
You can save money by cutting and pasting information and then
photo-copying the one-sheet at a local Kinkos or quick print service.

--------------------------------------11.3 References and Testimonials

---------------------------------------

References are names of other stage hypnotism gigs you have

performed at.
If you want to attract high schools assembly shows with your one
sheet or brochure, you will want to list the name of high schools
where you had great stage shows.
Your references gives prospective bookers places where they can
check on how well you perform and how you will fit into their
entertainment plans.
In the beginning you will have no references so don't include any in
your brochure or your one-sheet.
Once you finish your first show, ask the decision-maker if you can
include his name, the name of the venue as a reference on your
marketing materials.
Also, always ask the decision-maker if he/she would like to book next
year's show.
182

With all the excitement with the success of your first show, this is the
very best time to ask for a future order.
After a while, you should get enough business from referral business
that you may not have to spend so much time and money on the
marketing aspect of the business.
Referrals and word-of-mouth will become your best marketing
strategy over time.

183

==> Testimonials <==

You get testimonials from people that come up to you after the show
and tell you how much they enjoyed it.
While they are in mood to tell you how great you are, ask them on the
spot if you can use what they said as a testimonial for your marketing
materials.
They will be glad to help you out in return for the fun they had during
your great, entertaining show.

Testimonials are included on brochures and one-sheets. Most of the

time you will use those last, although many brochures and onesheets will "sandwich" testimonials between other sections of text.
When you send for brochures and marketing information from
professional speakers and hypnotists, you will see great examples of
how this is done.
Again, use the format that grabs your attention the most.
If it grabs your attention, it will grab other people's attention.

184

11.4 Videos
Audition videos are used mostly for college and corporate show
bookings.
The key here is that an audition video is only 5 to 7 minutes of your
show.
It should include the funniest and most active parts of your show.
There are a couple of great ways you can get your stage shows video
taped.
1. Pay for a professional video service. You will pay a fee to have the
professional videotape your show, create and master tape, and then
additional copies for you to send to prospective clients.
The service will also edit the tape for you to get it down to 5 to 7
minutes of exciting stuff.
The professional video will also show the audience enjoying the
show. This is very important in your video. You want happy people
out in the audience.

2. If you have no budget for videos at the moment, when you book
your first show, ask if they will be video taping it.
If they say "yes," add that your show includes your own "copyrighted
material and should not be videotaped.
However, if you can make me 8 video copies of the show, you will be
able to videotape and use my show, "royalty free."

185

Make sure you memorize the above sentence, because every

corporation and even small high schools will have someone video
taping for the organization's benefit.
Have you ever gone to a music concert or other performance where
announcements were made about recording equipment is prohibited?
The reason is, you have a right to the material in your performance.
It is a right called "copyright," which is the same law that protect your
books from being stolen.
Copyright exists in every country in the world, so you and your show
is protected.
Your show and my show are copyright protected. We have a right to
charge extra money for each performance, if the show is videotaped
by the organization, party, club, or school.
Use that fact to your advantage when booking your show.
Get free videos.
Also, you can take the best free video, and take it to a service that will
edit your video and make a great package for you.
Remember too, that once you send a video off for someone to look
at, you will never get it back.
So factor in that fact when sending audition videos off.
Only offer an audition video if your potential fee if over $1000.00 or if
you are sending it off to a booking agent who has specifically asked
for it.
Most videos will never be looked at by your contacts and you will
never get them returned to you even if you send returned postage
guaranteed.

186

Do your best to book yourself without spending time and money on

videos

-------------------------------------------------11.5 Exercises for Further Learning

--------------------------------------------------

Look up in the phone book or on the Internet and send for brochures
and pricing information from professional entertainers.
If you have access to telephone Yellow Pages in large metropolitan
areas, look under "entertainment" and contact all of the bands and
stage acts you can find.
The purpose of this exercise to obtain as many examples of
brochures and one sheets you can in order to design yours for
maximum effect.
Remember that mailing one-sheets or brochures will only get you a
on per-cent return, so you want to make your materials as effective
as you can.
Resist the temptation to spend money on Internet marketing. Most
people that book shows use the old traditional ways of, 1. Word of
mouth, 2. one-sheets and brochures, 3. Videos from booking agents
they trust.
I have never had much of a return from Internet Advertising of my
shows and have joined numerous other websites, spending money
only to find out those websites have virtually no audience of potential
bookers.

At some time that may change, but the fact is you will be wasting your
time and money by using the Internet to book your show.
187

Good luck!

-----------YOUR NOTES
-----------

188

11.6 Summary
Now you are ready to create marketing instruments that will help you
book your show.
Even though the best way to get bookings is through referrals, you
will always need to send materials to keep your name out there.
Good luck on marketing your shows.

Lesson Twelve: Developing Multiple

Streams of Income

Table of Contents
12.0 Introduction--------------12.1 Sources of Internet Income ------12.2 Selling Books and Tapes---------12.3 Additional Shows -----------12.4 Additional Workshops, Seminars and Classes----------12.5 Exercises for Further Learning
12.6 Hypnosis Resources, Books and Additional Learning ----

------------------------------------------------------------12.0 Introduction--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that you are experienced at booking your own stage shows, you
will now go to the next step, which is developing multiple streams of
income.
There are two reasons you need multiple streams of income.
1. People who watch you perform are going to want additional
products and services.

191

2. As an independent businessperson, you must cover yourself in

case of medical emergencies or poor economic conditions that may
trigger cancellations of your shows.
This lesson will teach you where to find additional sources of income
to build your popularity as well as create continual streams of
personal income.

12.1 Sources of Internet Income----------------------------------

Over the last five years I have been caught up in the mystery and
mystique of the Internet.
In spite of the hype, very few people are making any money selling
their products and services on the Internet.

Since hypnosis books and products are more difficult to find using
brick and mortar stores, the demand is still high for these products.
I suggest that if you are selling hypnosis products over the Internet
that you need the following.
1. Internet Website
2. A third party credit card processor or a merchant account.
3. 20 Hours a week free time to commit to changing and adding
content to your website.
Most people cannot commit to 20 hours a week updating and
marketing their website. In fact most people have others create their
websites and do not updating whatsoever.
Many people do not get third party credit card processors and
merchant accounts.

192

So there is another way of participating in Internet profits without

spending a dime.
You can join my Hypnotism Education Affiliate Program located at:
http://www.wayneperkins.net/hypnosis/affiliate.html
An Affiliate Program is a passive income program.
If you have a website and are generating 200 or more hits a day, you
may want to consider joining my program.
Every time one of your website viewers clicks from your website over
to mine and purchases one of my e-books, you will be paid up to 50%
of the selling price.
My least expensive e-book goes for $9.95 each. You would receive
over $4.00 for any sales that were a result of one of your web viewers
clicking over from your website to mine and then purchasing one of
my e-books.
Most of my new e-book offerings go for $19.95 each. What that
means is you would receive over $8.00 for each sale.
Do you have an idea what a typical author earns on selling a
traditional print book?
The print author will be lucky to receive a dollar a book! In most cases
authors receive less.
So by becoming a Hypnotism Education Affiliate, you may receive 4
to 8 times the revenue a traditional print authors receives just by
adding affiliate links to your pages.
You can join up by going to:
http://www.wayneperkins.net/hypnosis/affliate.html

193

2. A second source of Income is through your own hypnosis e-zine or

newsletter.
Professional speakers have always increased their bookings when
offering newsletters and now that you can deliver your newsletter or
e-zine by e-mail, your cost of paper and mailing is zero.
Creating your own e-zine or newsletter is simple.
You can obtain instruction at the E-zine University located at:
http://www.ezineuniversity.com/
If you have a website you must have an e-zine or Internet newsletter.
The above resource will help you develop a great one in a very short
time.

You can give away your e-zine for free but advertise your products,
services and your affiliate products and services.

3. Internet Advertising Services

A third source of Internet revenue is through offering advertisements
for others.
Make sure they have products or services that will promote your
website.
This will help you sell more products because of the positive
association.
To get an idea of what to charge for advertising in your e-zine or
newsletter, subscribe to several e-zines, and check out their rates.
The best way to learn is by jumping in and getting wet.

194

----------------------------------------------12.2 Selling Books, Videos and CD's

-----------------------------------------------

Selling traditional books and tapes is a little trickier.

You will always have to have more products on hand than you are
selling in order to provide great customer service for your fans.
This means that you will have to spend money in order to make
money.
There is always the risk that you may not create any profits as
production costs for books, tapes and CDs is expensive.
If you plan on becoming a full-time stage hypnotist, you will want to
make the investment.
If you are only a part timer, you may want to focus on Internet selling
of downloaded products like e-books that don't cost you money to
produce or duplicate.
I rarely offer traditional books and tapes any more because I don't like
to worry about production and inventory costs.
I promote Wendi Friesen's CDs and Videos. She is a great hypnotist
who is honest and pays great affiliate fees. I receive the affiliate fee
and she absorbs production and inventory costs.
You can join her affiliate program by going to her website at:
http://www.myaffiliateprogram.com/u/wendi/t.asp?id=1024

195

Marketing Books or Tapes at a Show

When you book a show, make sure you mention that you are offering
books and tapes for sale.
Then enlist the help of someone at the even and split your profits with
the organization that books you.
Offer a fixed amount for each book or tape.
If you have a book that is selling for $20.00 each, offer to give the
organization $5.00 for each book sold.
If it is a non-profit organization, offer to donate $5.00 for each book
sold back to the group.
Make sure you follow the laws of your State or Region in collecting
the appropriate taxes.
You are a professional businessperson and are responsible for your
tax liability.

196

12.3 Additional Shows

---------------------------------------

Every time you successfully complete a show, you should ask the
booker to pencil you in for next year's event.
Let them know that you will guarantee them the same price as you
are going to raise your rates for next year.
If everyone has loved your show they will want to jump at the
opportunity to sign you up for next year.
Once you leave the building, you popularity will begin to fade.
If you wait to contact the organization a year later, they may have
found another hypnotist or entertainer to perform.
Get them when they are hot! Ask for additional bookings as soon as
you complete your show.
If the booker is not at the event, call him/her within the next few days
after the event.

---------------==> Notes <==

----------------

197

12.4 Additional Workshops,

Seminars and Classes
--------------------------------------------------

How about offering a seminar or workshop in addition to your show?

If you have a Friday evening show at a high school or college, you
can offer a seminar or workshop for the booking organization and
split the gate with the organization.
Let the organization sell the tickets and secure the venue and you
just show up and perform your seminar or workshop.
You may even offer to split the profits on your books and tapes,
giving you additional income streams that will carry on after you leave
the area.
Always think of developing additional streams of income for your
stage shows.
People will assume that as a hypnotist, you can help them overcome
smoking and overeating problems.
Learn everything you can about hypnotherapy and you will be able to
add additional services to others while you are traveling and
presenting your shows.

198

-----------YOUR NOTES
-----------

-----------------------------------12.5 Exercises for Further Learning

-----------------------------------

Make a list of all of the additional hypnosis services you want to offer
your clients.
Remember, you can offer e-books, books, tapes, CDs, one-on-one
hypnosis sessions, group sessions, seminars and workshops.
You can accomplish these by yourself or enlist the help of the
organization that books you for your stage show.
Create one-sheets and prices lists that include some of the additional
services you are going to offer.
Keep thinking of new ways to expand your offerings at minimal cost
and minimal risk to you.
199
