ETA emc289336: CLARiiON CX4 and Celerra NS: Uptime and Robustness ETA Bulletin for EMC CX4/NS storage systems
Fact
EMC Technical Advisory (ETA)
Product: CLARiiON CX4 Series
EMC Firmware: FLARE Release 30.522 and earlier
Product: Celerra NS-120
Product: Celerra NS-480
Product: Celerra NS-960
EMC SW: NAS Code earlier than 5.6.52.2/6.0.51.6
Symptom
Issues detailed below can potentially affect the uptime of CX4/NS arrays running CX4 software earlier than FLARE Release 30.523
and NAS Code 5.6.52.2 or 6.0.51.6.
Cause
EMC has implemented several important changes to the FLARE Release 30 and NAS Code 5.6.x/6.0.x. These changes are part of
EMC effort to continuously improve product quality. This ETA provides guidance to improve uptime and robustness of EMC
CX4/NS arrays. All fixes are documented in the release notes available on Powerlink. The release notes should be
consulted for a full list of issues addressed in a particular release. EMC recommends planning to upgrade CX4 or NS storage
systems no less than twice a year for the best uptime/robustness experience.
For Awareness of an Issue Potentially Affecting RecoverPoint Uptime
LUNs that have been expanded or migrated to larger LUNs at any point in the past and not updated in RecoverPoint may
cause a data unavailable event during a non-disruptive upgrade (NDU) to FLARE Release 30 or later.
See solution emc267647 (NDU) and emc169302 (LUN expansion with RecoverPoint) for more information and how to
plan for this.

ETA emc289336: CLARiiON CX4 and Celerra NS: Uptime and Robustness ETA Bulleti... Page 2 of 2
Allows dial-homes for CX4 and NS systems in connection with an error code 820, Soft Media Error on Enterprise FLASH
Drives (EFD) for specific types of media errors which, although rare, if left unchecked, have the potential to result in data
unavailable (DU)/data loss (DL) conditions for LUNs using FAST Cache. For more information on this please contact EMC.
EFD drives require new firmware update for NEW systems at the time of install in order to address potential media error
events described above. See solution emc286025 for more details.
Firmware available for new installs only.
Next FLARE service pack includes patch for Online Disk Firmware (ODFU) utility and FLARE components required
for installation of this firmware on production arrays.
Addresses an issue that could result in multiple drives in the same RAID Group being disabled if a drive is taking media
errors during a remap.
Addresses an issue that could result in LUNs remaining offline after a power down if power is shut off on array by
powering down standby power supply (SPS) units sequentially rather than simultaneously.
Addresses an issue that could result in LUNs that are using FAST Cache going offline after a non-disruptive upgrade
(NDU) if the user is non-disruptively upgrading the compression enabler or FAST enabler at the same time as the FLARE
OE package.
for the installation of an Extended Pool Capacity (EPC) Enabler if/when array is at or near safe operating
capacity. Mitigates storage processor (SP) panics due to possible memory exhaustion. See emc263403 for more details.
Fixes for rare SP reboots due to machine check (iERR) errors.
Fixes for the following single SP bugchecks:
bugcheck when LUN trespasses during heavy write.
bugcheck if I/O fails during disabling of write Cache.
bugcheck running Unisphere commands during heavy loads.
bugcheck on 10 Gb iSCSI systems during closed connections.
bugcheck on iSCSI systems during link bounces.
bugcheck when unbinding/rebinding a LUN very rapidly.
bugcheck if FAST Cache is enabled and I/O to metaLUN is cancelled.
bugcheck if I/O is cancelled and RecoverPoint Splitter is enabled.
bugcheck if a large number of media errors are encountered during a Proactive Copy (PACO) operation.
bugcheck if the SP has slow performance due to SP hardware issue.
bugcheck due to timeout of a 4-port SLIC.
bugcheck when failing drive tries to remap a bad block but repeatedly fails.
Fix
Upgrade to latest CX4/NS software code for latest improvements to increase uptime availability.
Note
Identical SP panic codes can have multiple causes. Do not automatically assume that when an SP panic code matches a panic in
this solution that the symptom or resolution will be the same.
EMC recommends upgrading CX4 and NS arrays no less than twice a year to take advantage of the latest fixes.
