BACKGROUND
The National Council of La Raza (NCLR)the largest national Hispanic civil rights and
advocacy organization in the United Statesworks to improve opportunities for Hispanic
Americans. Through its network of nearly 300 affiliated community-based organizations, NCLR
reaches millions of Hispanics each year in 41 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia.
To achieve its mission, NCLR conducts applied research, policy analysis, and advocacy,
providing a Latino perspective in five key areasassets/investments, civil rights/immigration,
education, employment and economic status, and health. In addition, it provides capacitybuilding assistance to its Affiliates who work at the state and local level to advance opportunities
for individuals and families.
Founded in 1968, NCLR is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan, tax-exempt organization
headquartered in Washington, DC, serving all Hispanic subgroups in all regions of the country. It
has state and regional offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Phoenix, and San
Antonio.
SUMMARY
The Media Relations Manager will manage the media relations activities of the organization with
a strong focus on traditional and new media outreach. The candidate will report to the Assistant
Director of Communications and work with the Senior Director of Communications to further
NCLRs media outreach activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop strong relationships with reporters in both traditional and new media, with a
focus on developing relationships with bloggers and online outlets, seeking out
opportunities for positive media coverage of NCLR.
Write and disseminate news releases, media advisories, statements, media pitches and
strategies, and blogs. In addition, will at times be tasked with writing letters to the editor,
media statements, and bylined articles.

Act as liaison between media and staff, fielding and organizing media inquiries and
interviews.
Obtain publicity and media interviews as well as provide team support at NCLR events,
conferences, awards ceremonies, and the NCLR Annual Conference.
Coordinate and supervise news conferences and press campaigns.
Create and edit departmental updates, NCLR fact sheets, backgrounders, bios, and other
related materials.
Work with the departments coordinator to create and update media lists as well as
schedule media interviews.
Participate in brainstorms, strategy meetings, messaging sessions, and other NCLRrelated meetings and gatherings.
Other communications duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelors degree in English, journalism, public relations, or communications.


Five to seven years of media relations experience.
Experience in developing and conducting media relations activities, such as media
campaigns and cultivating relationships with reporters.
Experience working with new media outlets.
Superior oral and written communications skills.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.
A strong interest in and knowledge of NCLRs issues, programs, and constituencies.
High degree of initiative and ability to work under tight deadlines with minimal
supervision required.
Ability to coordinate logistics of press campaigns and other public relations events.
Strong technology skills.
Ability, at times, to work evenings and weekends.
Bilingual fluency (English/Spanish) preferred.
