EDITORIAL
Mixed Bag
Economic prospects in the fastener industry seem pretty sluggish and dull lately, but there are pieces of information that have
crossed my desk, or should I say computer and phone screens, that
are painting a different picture:
Our coverage of the Las Vegas show starts on page 44, and we
are exhibiting in booth 1703.
Dumping
I am disgusted by the practice of dumping products into established markets, especially when government subsidies are involved.
Selling at less than normal value for long periods of time usually wreaks havoc on domestic suppliers. The latest case to hit the
USA fastener industry involves steel threaded rod from India and
Thailand. Antidumping duty petitions were filed on behalf of three
USA-based threaded rod producers: All America Threaded Products;
Bay Standard Manufacturing; and Vulcan Threaded Products. The
petition identified 69 producers and/or exporters from India and 18
from Thailand as being guilty of dumping threaded rod into the USA.
In 2012, the USA imported US$23 million of steel threaded rod.
The US Department of Commerce is investigating, and it will issue
determinations in December. In my opinion, deliberate, long-term
dumping is nothing short of economic terrorism, and the correction
process takes too long.
In this day and age advanced technology and of a federal government committed to expanding its size, control, influence and data collection, I thought it would be wise to review the Fourth Amendment
of the US Constitution. Part of the Bill of Rights, The Fourth Amendment prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures and requires any
warrant to be judicially sanctioned and supported by probable cause.
It was adopted in response to the abuses of the British Government
and it was a major source of tension in pre-Revolutionary America.
Under the Fourth Amendment, search and seizure as well as arrest
should be limited in scope according to specific information supplied
to a court by a law enforcement officer who has sworn by it, not just
at the will of the NSA, IRS or other geniuses in the law enforcement
branch of the government, i.e., the executive branch.
Why is this important? It is important because it relates to privacy,
which ultimately ties into freedom of speech, two fundamental rights
of being American. When the government can look at and collect any
and all of your communications without living up to the standards
of the fourth amendment, even in the name of security, then we are
just trading privacy rights in exchange for excessive government
surveillance. The problem with this increased surveillance that is
happening all around us is that it will eventually put the government
in charge of everything. Here is a paraphrased quote from a recent
Wall Street Journal column by Peggy Noonan on this subject: A
republic only works if public officials and the government know
that they answer to the citizens of the republic. If its the other
way around, citizens answering to the government, then the selfgoverning republic ceases to exist.
Are these just paranoid thoughts? I dont think so. No government will always do what is right, especially when it is in charge and
controls the flow of information. For example, consider these two
facts: First, the IRS is now involved in health care administration.
Second, the government obviously has the technology and resources
to enforce its borders, but it has chosen
not to do so for over a dozen years.
Other interventions are not far
behind including recent references to
collecting data on colleges. Ignorance
of the Fourth Amendment is helping
crush the concept of limited and balanced government.

WARM FORMING PROGRESSIVE HEADERS
SACMA has developed special machines, incorporating induction heating units in the wire feeding line. The typical temperature range of warm forming applications is
between 300C/572F and 900C/1652F depending of materials. High frequency induction heating is obtained by means of special coils that can be fitted outside or inside
the main frame of the machine, between the feed rolls and the cut-off quill. There is specific cooling of the coils and of the frame and the temperature of the wire is read by
specific optical pyrometers. The WF application also provides temperature control of the die box and of the coolant liquid.
It allows the deformation of Titanium alloys (Ti3,5Al2V, Ti6Al4V), Light alloys (2000 and 7000 series), Nickel superalloys, Alloyed steel (100Cr6, Cromolly steels),
Stainless steels for high temperature applications (A286, A310).

IFI Update
Founded in 1931, the Industrial Fasteners Institute (IFI), Independence, OH, USA, is an association of the leading North American
manufacturers of bolts, nuts, screws, rivets and all types of special
formed parts. Associate members include suppliers of equipment,
materials and services commonly used in fastener manufacture.
Whether you are a fastener maker, supplier or end-user, IFI has
something of value to offer. www.indfast.org

trivalent chromium conversion finishes to achieve the corrosion resistant values indicated in the standard.
Friction modifiers are available and may be desirable to enable the finish
to perform as desired from a tightening perspective. Friction modifiers
can be PTFE (Teflon) incorporated into the topcoat or can be a wax
applied as the last operation in applying the finish.
A system for designating these multi-layer finishes is being introduced
in this revision.
Hydrogen Embrittlement Prevention & Detection
Much research has been completed since 2007 on the subject of hydrogen induced failures in fasteners. Some of the conclusions coming from
the research is resulting in some proposed changes in ASTM F1941.
The research has confirmed the previous threshold for the concern for
hydrogen embrittlement baking starting at Rockwell C40. It has been further validated that the susceptibility for hydrogen embrittlement failures
increases rapidly as the fastener hardness increases. This means that
ASTM F1941 does NOT mandate post plating baking for any SAE J429
Grades 5 or 8, ASTM A354, ASTM A449 or ISO 898-1, 10.9 bolts or
screws.
The standard recommends that finishes other than electroplating should
be considered for fasteners that are Rockwell C40 and above, but if they
are electroplated, the fasteners should be baked for a minimum of 14
hours instead of the long-published recommended four-hour bake. It is
suggested that when baking is performed, it should be done as quickly as
practical after plating, but the exact period is not specified as critical. Testing after baking through-hardened bolts and screws must be conducted
according to ASTM F606 as specified in the current revision of F1941,
but the requirement for the use of the method specified in ASME B18.6.3
is proposed to be used after electroplating all types of tapping screws.
Inch & Metric Requirements Are Now Combined
Last year, the F16 Committee decided that all new or revised finish standards should cover both inch and metric fasteners. The reasoning on that
is that the finishes have no different requirements whether the finish is on
an inch or a metric bolt. Only the expressions of the units must be stated
throughout. This decision makes it much easier for the F16 Committee to
keep the inch and metric requirements coordinated at all times.
Conclusion
ASTM F1941, Electrodeposited Coatings on Threaded Fasteners, is in
the revision process at this time. Here are significant changes:
1. Topcoats and sealers are identified and it is acknowledged that trivalent chromium finishes must incorporate the topcoats and sealers to meet
the published corrosion resistance requirements.
2. Torque modifiers are identified that can be added to finishes so the K
factors can be controlled much more precisely than in the past.
3. A new finish identification system is being introduced so that the addition of topcoats, sealants and friction modifiers can be clearly designated
when specifying finishes in the future.
4. When electroplating fasteners that have a hardness of HRC 40 or
above, the recommended baking time is being raised from four hours to
fourteen hours at temperature. The temperatures will not change.
5. Inch/metric requirements will be incorporated into one standard.
It is hoped that the revision of ASTM F1941 is published before the end of
2013. Contact the author at jgreenslade@indfast.org.

Industrial Fasteners Institute (IFI) and the Fastener Training Institute (FTI). These two organizations
team up to bring resources and training to fastener
providers throughout the supply chain.
If you pay any attention at all to the metric fastener
industry you know that times are changing. Specs are
changing. The IFI is blazing the trail on getting us all
up to speed and showing us how to get our customers (OEMs and end users) on board with the latest
changes. Basically that means that DIN and JIS are
out, and ISO is in, and when it comes to metric fasteners, ASME (which was never really in, in the first
place) is definitely out, and ASTM metric standards
are not major players.
Easy for you to say, you are thinking. My reality is
somewhat different.
Thats right. Your customers are still asking for DIN
standard parts and those who are catching the wave
and asking for ISO parts have trouble getting ISO certifications. What to do?
The FTI is offering a new course, Metric Fasteners:
Theres More to Know Than You Think. This is a fullday, highly technical course focusing on metric fasteners. It covers metric specifications and standards,
metric terminology and metric math. Attendees will
find out about the latest industry trends and why many
common metric standards are obsolete, and what to
do about it. They will also get some hands-on experience in applying generic fastener principles such as
the torque-tension relationship to metric fasteners.
Technical topics such as metric threads and tolerancing will be covered in detail. Also, some amazing resources will be shared to help attendees become THE
metric technical authority in their market.
Its an exciting time to be a metric fastener supplier, but it will be a frustrating time for those who do
not avail themselves of the information necessary to
know how to navigate the changing standards and
marketplace situation. Suppliers are responding to
the changes, and even though demand for DIN product is still stronger than for ISO, they are getting in line
with the standards changes. Up-to-speed suppliers
will dual-certify their product where it meets both DIN
and ISO standards. Where there are differences such
as in some hex cap screws and nut hex dimensions,
some offer and certify to both DIN and ISO products
under separate part numbers.

Always try to include comparable parts that did not fail for comparison and/

Another desirable side effect of ordering with a checklist or logic guideline is
that this is a big first step toward turning the traditional buyer-seller relationship
into a true partnering relationship where both partners achieve their desired
gains in quality, speed, efficiency, ease of business and cost effectiveness.
During the course of a failure analysis, intermittent communication with the ana-
AutomAtic SheAring
lyst is essential to present initial results, discuss findings and observations and
reassess direction of the project. Your samples should not go into a black hole
in which at some time in the future, a report comes out. In some instances, the
analyst may encounter a feature or item that is unexpected. Answers to additional questions that surface from these unexpected findings can help refine the
direction of the analysis to provide more accurate and poignant conclusions and
recommendations.
The goal of a failure analysis is to identify the cause of the failure, and to set a
direction for the client to put corrective actions in place to prevent reoccurrence.
A collaborative effort between the analysis (lab), the client and other parties (supplier, end user, etc.) will yield the most accurate assessment as well as set in motion the most effective solutions. Communication is the key to reaching this goal.

measure probe will simply measure two or more independent points in the thread groove, and chances are pretty good
that the best ball size is not being used.
Adjustable thread rings are intended to be used as a
functional check of the product. Set plugs will confirm a
functional fit, but direct measurement will only provide
pitch diameter size at the specific thread groove that is
probed. Direct measurement does not take factors such
as flank angle, lead, root clearance or helical offset into
consideration. In other words, all the elements that make
up functional fit are being ignored.
Setting an adjustable thread ring gage to a setting plug may
be subjective, because firm fit or snug fit as defined in
the standards, may mean something different to different
people. However, there is much more variation when taking
more than one direct measurement of the same gage. In
fact, there could be several tenths different in the actual
setting between the two methods.
Calibration laboratories that are accredited to ISO
17025 either have to follow standard methods or they
can develop their own as long as they are then validated.
Validation of those alternative methods means that the
result is repeatable to within measurement uncertainty using the standard method as the measuring stick. The direct
measurement of pitch diameter on adjustable thread ring
gages has been studied and proven to provide too large of
a deviation. Therefore, direct measurement is not a valid
alternative to setting adjustable thread ring gages with a

Adjustable thread ring gages can be sensitive and it
is highly recommended that end users have their own
setting plug to periodically evaluate their proper setting.

how much dirt and grit are on the product threads at the
time of inspection.

threaded ring gages certified without the use of the appropriate setting plugs are probably inaccurate. Unless adjustable thread ring gages are set to the appropriate threaded
setting plugs as specified by ASME and other standards,
gage certifications of those gages are invalid.
The ASME standard governs their design and calibration, so adjustable thread ring gages that are calibrated by
any other means other than a set plug are more than likely
set to an inaccurate size. Furthermore, they may accept
nonconforming threaded product or may erroneously reject
conforming product.
So to answer the question, Why do I need the set plug?
Because the standards say so!

Automotive Fastener & Bolted Joint
Testing to Drive Innovation, Improve
Quality/Safety & Steamline Production
Fasteners and bolted joints quite literally hold automotive
designs, assemblies and the resulting completed vehicle
together. So, a complete understanding of how they perform is essential to drive innovation, improve quality and
safety and introduce production efficiencies in the automotive sector. Each of these aspects contributes to the
competitive advantage of automotive original equipment
manufacturers (OEMs). Fastener manufacturers who understand how their products can contribute to creating
competitive advantage and can develop new fasteners to
meet car makers needs can better serve their automotive
OEM customers. Vibrationmasters Morten Schiff and
REC solutions in fastening technologys Bernhard
Reck explain how automotive OEMs apply static and dynamic fastener and bolted joint testing methodologies to
drive product, quality, safety and process improvements.
The focus of downstream automotive OEMs is to reduce
weight at the same time as increasing the performance
of the fastener and bolted joint. Ultimately, this translates
into less weight with higher clamp loads, explains Reck,
who provides test equipment, training seminars, research
and consulting to leading automotive OEMs. This emphasis on weight reduction can lead to product and materials
innovations, which in turn impact on quality, safety and
the production process. Ongoing fastener and bolted joint
testing is required to ensure that the benefits of fastener
innovation do not compromise production quality and efficiency, or vehicle safety.
Dynamic testing has always played a core role in automotive design, and the use of bespoke test beds to assess

To determine how the fastener and bolted joint will perform during assembly and subsequent operation, automotive OEMs comprehensively test the materials, coatings and manufacturing aspects of each fastener design,
continues Reck. In addition to key fastener tests, such
as those identified by ISO 898-1:2009 and other international standards bodies, most automotive OEMs have developed their own standards.
Reck highlights Mercedes DBL, Volkswagens TL, Fords
and General Motors Worldwide as just a few of the automotive standards that fastener manufacturers must meet
to supply these customers. And he notes, Each set of automotive OEM standards has its own fastener and bolted
joint test requirements.
Schiff adds that although similar and often based on existing and widely accepted international fastener test
standards, automotive OEM tests may feature subtle differences that are included as a result of proprietary production processes and know-how. Schiff says, An OEM
may require a very specific torque tension test with unique
parameters, because they relate directly to the processes
on its production line and the capabilities of its workers.
Reck notes that the drive for less weight with higher
clamp loads has resulted in an even greater focus on
optimizing assembly process conditions: To fasten a
bolted joint to the maximum clamp load, the assembly
line operator or robot needs to increase the clamp force
up to the classification or yield point of the bolt within the
Alongside the adoption of new materials, Design Engineers have incorporated fasteners within the application
design itself. This practice is becoming more common,
particularly in automotive electronics with features such
as e-bolt assemblies where the fastener is an integral element of the electronic circuit design.
According to Reck, this brings further challenges: Vehicle cables and connectors can have up to 800 V running
through them during normal operating conditions. If high
voltages are running through an e-bolt assembly, the fastener can become hot and in a worst-case scenario could
cause ignition.
In this context, we need to understand what happens to
the electrical resistance after the bolted joint has been assembled, what happens to the bolted joints performance
as current flows through the fastener and as its temperature increases and also the impact on the fasteners performance over the long term.
Recks test solution for automotive OEMs is another bespoke test bed incorporating a range of sensors to test
what happens to the clamp force and resistivity. The tests

Thermal-Diffusion, Environment-Friendly,
Cost-Effective Corrosion Protection
Moshe Moked, President, Distek N.A LLC, Elk
Grove Village, IL, USA, says, The ArmorGalv
process is a metallurgical conversion of any steel
part surface into a zinc/iron alloy. The process itself
is totally green with no environmental impact, as
the EPA has tested and declared it a close to zero
emission process, qualifying it for the EPAs MVP2
award in 2006 (Most Valuable Pollution Prevention
technology of the year). The ArmorGalv metallurgical conversion is affected by sublimating the zinc at
temperatures well below the melting point of zinc.
The zinc vapor is attracted to the bare steel due to
the potential differences and as the parts get coated,
the potential is reduced. This makes the process selfregulating and ensures a very uniform and controllable alloy layer.
The ArmorGalv zinc/iron alloy has some very interesting properties such as corrosion, abrasion and
wear resistance, high operating temperature tolerance, no hydrogen embrittlement issues, formability
and abuse resistance and more. These properties
make ArmorGalv an excellent, cost-effective replacement to many current coating systems and are the
reasons it was adapted by many major companies

Copper and Copper Alloys Part III
The last two columns have dealt with primary processing of
copper, that is, obtaining copper from ore. We will now move on
to commercially available grades of copper and copper alloys,
starting with the two most important conductor grades, namely
oxygen-free copper and electrolytic-tough-pitch copper.
Since we are addressing conductor grades, a word or two on
electrical resistivity is in order. The electrical resistivity, re,
of copper and metals in general has three sources, which
can vary, namely those associated with dissolved impurity
elements, with thermal vibrations and with crystal defects
(dislocations, vacancies, etc.). It is common to express these
contributions in the manner of Equation 1.

the melting range, reaching a value as high as 0.0035%, as
shown in the small portion of the copper-oxygen phase diagram set forth in the Figure below. Rapid cooling from this
range can lead to supersaturation with an unstable amount of
oxygen in solution, and this phenomenon may be of interest
in certain states of copper production. However, for the most
part oxygen can be regarded as an alloying element in ETP
copper, with the role of removing solute elements that would
increase resistivity if left in solid solution. The presence of the
oxides, per se, does not materially affect conductivity.

Spotlight On Packaging
by Mike McNulty, Editor,
Fastener Technology International, www.fastenertech.com
These days, more than ever, packaging is a major component of
fastener products, and there is a good amount of technology and
creativity behind the operation of modern packaging systems and
materials. They are also fun to watch when in operation.
Even though the basic concepts of packaging remain pretty constant,
interesting technological improvements are taking place in terms
of vastly improved control systems, increased accuracy and speed,
short-run capability, the use of recyclable materials, higher levels of
automation and sophisticated labeling operations.
Additional trends for packaging and labeling include greater durability,
improved accuracy, faster changeovers, more attention to ergonomics,
more powerful software, 3D imaging, multi-head operation and the
integration of inspecting operations with the packaging.
Packages and packaging are an important part of the finished
product, and they contribute to the final part quality, performance
and usability. Labels are just as critical in terms of proper identification, traceability and transfer of information. In my opinion,
a good package or label should be durable, simple in design and
easy to use. Other important issues include good visibility, proper
handling of the packaged product, a good balance between price
and performance and accuracy.
The packaging field is pretty broad, and it serves all types of industries
including hardware, food, medical supplies, plastic parts, furniture
kits, toy kits, household products and more. Fortunately for people
in the fastener industry, there are many companies that dedicate their
business or parts of it to serving the packaging and labeling needs
of manufacturers and distributors of fasteners. These companies
offer manual, semiautomatic and automatic packaging and labeling
systems and devices specific to fastener industry requirements and
demands.
Fastener packaging systems do more than just package fasteners. They
accurately count, weigh, meter and even inspect precise amounts of
the finished product before filling the specified package with the
correct amount of parts, sealing the package, printing and affixing
a label and stacking the packages on a pallet or in larger packages.
The options are almost endless, depending on the application, the
customer and the end use.
Common packages are kegs, cans, bin containers, boxes, cartons,
bags, blister packs, etc., and quantities can range from a few parts to
hundreds or thousands of fasteners.
Equipment used in packaging systems includes bin dumpers,
hoppers, feeders, counters, weighers, conveyors, box erectors, bag

drive one. However, when it came time to actually discuss buying the car, he disappeared and we had no fewer
than three managers come to tell us all the reasons they
couldnt sell us the car we were interested in. It was clear
that the salesman couldnt help us because he had little
or no ownership in the sale. Contrast that with the next
dealer we visited. Our saleswoman was engaging and
knowledgeable about the product she was selling, even
though it was not the brand of automobile that the dealership sold. When we started to talk price, she too needed to
speak with a manager, but we never saw him. She handled
the deal entirely and we negotiated a fair price and ultimately purchased the vehicle.
Businesses that have exceptional customer service have
associates that accept ownership of the problem and see it
through to completion. This does not always mean that they
can actually fix the problem, but they manage the solution,
taking responsibility all the way through the process.
Empowerment: Perhaps the best way to have your associates act like owners is to empower them to act like
owners. Often times this doesnt take that much, but requires a culture that is willing to trust and forgive mistakes.
A couple of years ago at the Fall Industrial Fasteners
Institute meeting in Beaver Creek, CO, USA, the General
Manager of the hotel hosting the meeting, a Ritz Carlton,
was invited to share why the hotel is renown for having such
exceptional service. One of the things he shared was that
the hotel holds to the notion that every associate should be

Master Weigh Scale
For small fastener batches
The Master Weigh Scale was especially designed to weigh small batches
of assorted fasteners, hardware or metal
parts, and combines both weighing and
counting technologies. It is suitable for
packaging by weight, or it can be used for
batches that must be counted. Both methods are highly accurate with this scale.
The microprocessor-controlled
MCWS-9 offers a lot of flexibility to
fastener distributors, since it can be
integrated with box conveyors and
bagging machines, depending upon
the job details.
With a maximum part length of
3-1/8", along with a weight range from
1.75 oz to 4-1/2 lb, this scale can run
up to 12 cycles per minute depending
on the type of product and quantity
per batch.
The MCWS-9 is equipped with
two discharge channels, one for gross
weight and one for completion by
count. Individual parts are counted by
highly accurate photo-eye, and there
is a synchronization collection basket,

EU Imposes AD Duties
Against Indian Stainless Steel Wire
With the dumping investigation started in 2012 on Indian stainless steel wire exports, the European Commission has received lots of information from sampling
companies showing that during 2007 through 2011 the
wire imports from India grew substantially by 50%. Eurofer also points out that the price of imported Indian
stainless steel wire is much lower than that imported
from other countries, which has resulted in the material injury of many European companies. The measure
comes into force on May 7 2014, with the anti-dumping
rate up to 32.1%.
Fastener Focus
Chun Yu Works & Co., Ltd., of Taiwan, says that although overseas buyers are likely to request cheaper
prices of fasteners, the downfall of material costs can
still help them gain more orders from foreign markets.
Tycoons Group Enterprise Co., Ltd. says that the
price reduction of Taiwan CSC will force the company
to adjust wire prices downward, but it will still result in
material benefits to Tycoons fasteners.

products that are differentiated from imported materials including extremely high-strength spring steel
and high-strength wires for deep-sea development,
which steel companies of China find difficult to produce. POSCO expects 27 billion KRW in annual import replacements by expanding supply amounts of
automobile lightweight parts and high-functional parts
that are rapidly increasing in demand. Particularly,
POSCO will produce hot processing omission steel,
which does not require hot processing, and this will
contribute to a cost reduction of major client companies such as KISWIRE.
In his speech, CEO Chung Joonyang, who attended
the completion ceremony remarked, I hope this mill
will become specialized as a high-quality wire rod factory that can produce products meeting the demand of
clients and become the worlds best wire rod production base.

Ring Locking
Washers With

submitted by:
HEICO Befestigungstechnik GmbH
www.heico-lock.de
HEICO-LOCK ring lock washers from HEICO Befestigungstechnik GmbH, Ense-Niederense, Germany,
provide high-quality, user-friendly bolt securing for
the most demanding of applications and are ideal for
repeated use.
The ring locking system guarantees that the two wedge
lock washers are always fastened in the correct position with the wedge-shaped cams on the inside and
the radial teeth on the outside. This means that the
bolt locking system is always easy, safe and quick to
install, even for nonspecialist users.

The EZButterfly Fastener & Driver System is inexpensive to manufacture and market, therefore the
cost to users is lower.
The cost for the EZButterfly Driver ranges from
US$10.95 to US$14.75. EZButterfly Driver bits cost
US$3.95 each. The cost for EZButterfly Fasteners is
US$5.70 to US$33.75 per 100 count pack, and US$53.25
to US$307.50 for 1000 count pack. Figure 1 shows the
costs of comparable established products.
Currently, there are no fastener and driver systems
on the market that offer all the benefits of EZButterfly
Fastener & Driver Systems.
And the EZButterfly systems patent itself presents
a formidable barrier of entry to potential competitors.

Prevents driver tip from slipping off the screw head when
any rotational pressure is applied.
Nearly impossible to damage fastener or assembly materials.
Driver is easier to turn.
Virtually anyone can use the system effectively.
Inexpensive to manufacture and market (unlike some systems).
No need for identical screwdriver/screw head for proper function.
The more torque is applied, the more firmly driver grips the screw.
Difficult to remove driver from screw while torque is being applied.
With force not applied, driver is easily removed from screw.
Need for excessive downward pressure when driving the
screw is significantly reduced.
Ideal for hard-to-reach places.
May be used in zero-gravity situations.
May be used in under construction.
Interlocking engagement between fastener and driver tip.
Eliminates risk of unnecessary exertion.
Allows secure control.
Ideal specialty tool for space exploration.
