MASTERKURE

161
Bitumen based compound for the curing
and protection of concrete
Description

Standards

MASTERKURE 161 is a bitumen based, membrane-forming

solution, suitable for spray application to freshly poured
concrete.

ASTM C 309 Type 1 Class B

The resultant film retains sufficient moisture in the concrete

to ensure full hydration of the cement; essential for optimum
strength development. Additionally, the cured film forms a
damp and vapourproof membrane, sufficient to provide a
barrier to waterborne salts.

Primary uses

Foundation protection.
As a damp proof membrane.
Primer for preformed waterproofing membranes.

Advantages

Versatile multi-role product.

Immediate protection from chloride ion ingress.
Effective barrier to CO2 diffusion.
Economical and labour saving.

For horizontal surfaces the MASTERKURE 161 should be

applied as soon as the initial surface sheen has
disappeared from the concrete face. In the case of formed
concrete, the MASTERKURE 161 should be applied
immediately on removal of the formwork.
Apply a second coat of MASTERKURE 161 allowing 12 to
24 hours between coats.
When used for damp proofing floors apply a second coat at
right angles to the first and whilst still tacky lightly grit the
whole area to form a key. The concrete screed can be laid
after 24 hours and should be greater than 50mm in
thickness.

Coverage

Packaging
MASTERKURE 161 is available in 200 litre drums.

MASTERKURE 161 should be applied by spray, roller,

squeegee or brush. For green concrete MASTERKURE
161 should be spray applied as evenly as possible to the
freshly placed concrete.
Dependent on spray equipment up to 10% white spirit can
be added to facilitate spraying.

As a more effective and economical alternative to separate

curing and concrete protection operations. Suitable for use
on all concrete surfaces.

The recommended rate of application is 5-6m/litre. This

corresponds to that at which MASTERKURE 161 has been
tested, and at which it attains the claimed degree of curing
efficiency.

Composition
MASTERKURE 161 is manufactured from a blend of pure
bitumens and asphalt, modified with selected polymers
dissolved in fast drying solvents which evaporate quickly to
leave a continuous film, recoatable after 24 hours.

Chloride ion ingress

Safety precautions

The ingress of chlorides into concrete during curing will

accelerate the process of reinforcement corrosion.
MASTERKURE 161 offers excellent resistance to chloride
ion ingress and protects concrete at its most vulnerable
time. The graph below details results from independent
tests which highlight MASTERKURE 161s performance.

As with all chemical products, care should be taken during

use and storage to avoid contact with eyes, mouth, skin and
foodstuffs. Treat splashes to eyes and skin immediately. If
accidentally ingested, seek medical attention. Reseal
containers after use. Use in well ventilated areas and avoid
inhalation. For further information refer to the material
safety data sheet.
