OPGW - Optical Ground Wires

OPtical Ground Wire provides two products in one design. The OPGW will function as a
ground wire providing the normal electrical function identical to that of a standard ground wire
used on overhead transmission lines. By incorporating fibres, the OPGW can also provide
extremely large transmission capacity for data and communications requirements. This
capability is enhanced by the special design based on the steel tube providing unparalleled
protection for the fibres and marginal difference compared to the standard electrical ground
wire. The steel tube design has been selected as a development from the older aluminium
based slotted core and tube designs.
OPGW is manufactured by Nexans Norway AS, a special cable manufacturer within the
Nexans company, with long experience in all types of armoured cable designs. The long
experience acquired through decades of advanced cable development and manufacturing,
including submarine, ROV and seismic cables, has provided the company with a technical
knowledge which ensures high quality product incorporating the latest technologies such as the
capability of manufacturing very long lengths of steel tubes.

Cable Design

General Design
If the OPGW has only one
stranded layer of wires then
the fibre optic element will be
situated in the center, and
ACS or steel wires stranded
around it. In the case of a 2 or
3 layer OPGW, the wires may
be a mixture of ACS, zinccoated steel and aluminium
alloy, and fibre optic elements
are situated in one of the
inner stranded layers.

Electrical and mechanical

characteristics
A tradeoff has to be made
between ohmic resistance,
tensile strength and weight of
the OPGW. There will be a
large portion of steel when
tensile strength is important
whereas the lions share will
be aluminium if conductivity
has highest priority.

Optical characteristics
An OPGW typically consists
of 24 - 144 fibres inside 1 - 3
laser welded steel tubes.
Fibres are normally G652 or
G655, and all fibres inside a
steel tube has unique
identification.
