The AWD (Air Warfare Destroyer) System will encompass the following systems:
a.
The AWD Ship System; and
b.
The AWD Support System.
Advice
In accordance with the Defence White Paper 2000, the ADF is replacing the FFGs
from 2013 with a class of at least 3 air defence capable ships, the new Air Warfare
Destroyers (AWDs). These highly capable ships will provide continuous, effective area
air defence of a maritime force or land force operating in our maritime approaches or
deployed away from Australia, in both open-ocean and littoral environments. They
will be vital to ensuring the safety of amphibious and support ships, as well as land
forces and aircraft where there may be the threat of air or missile attack. They will
operate throughout our region, and indeed the world, as the Commander of a RAN
Task Group or as part of a coalition force. They will be interoperable with other ADF
units and international allies and will also have an undersea warfare (anti-submarine
and mine countermeasures) and anti-shipping capability.
The AWD will have the capability to contribute across the entire spectrum of military
operations, as shown below in Figure 1, throughout its expected long service life of
some 30-40 years, offering Government significant flexibility.

The AWD will incorporate modern systems and weapons built around the USN Aegis
Combat System, and will offer necessary growth paths to take advantage of new
capabilities and technologies as they become available. The AWD will be designed,
accepted, operated, supported, modified and disposed of within a whole-of-life
management philosophy.

An attack environment will exist when:

which exceeds the normal background by a factor of 10. (A normal background will
be < 100Bq/m3).
b)
The radioactivity of the deck (in Bq/m2) is in excess of 10 times the normal
radiation background.
c)
An unprotected person on the ship would receives a short term exposure of
greater than 0.2 Sv.
d)
The concentration of any chemical warfare agent in the vicinity of the ship is
greater than 1% of the accepted concentration which gives rise to observable
symptoms (e.g. HCN produces effects at concentrations 50 mg/m3 when absorbed for
an hour, and is rapidly lethal at concentrations of 300mg/m3. An exposure for one
minute to 75 mg of sarin in 1 m3 of air will be lethal. The figure for dermal exposure
is higher).
