Corporation dismantles unauthorized

bus shelters

Chennai Corporation workers have started removing
unapproved bus shelters constructed by MTC in T. Nagar,
West Mambalam, Ashok
Nagar, K. K. Nagar and nearby
areas.
A Corporation official told
Mambalam Times that they
have so far identified 20 such
shelters in the neighbourhood
of which four have so far been
removed.
He said that the rest of them
will also be removed during the
course of the week.

IT returns must for salaried

employees with taxable income
By Our Staff Reporter
Central Board of Direct
Taxes (CBDT) has made it
mandatory to file income tax
returns even for persons
drawing salary up to Rs. 5
lakhs.
The exemption from filing
IT returns given to these assesses in the previous two
assessment years has been
withdrawn this year.
However employees whose
taxable income is below the
exemption limit of Rs. 2 lakhs
need not file IT returns.
In-effect all salaried individuals with taxable income
will have to file IT returns.
Those in the 5-lakh bracket
have the option to either file

paper returns or e-file returns.

For persons with salary
above Rs. 5 lakhs, e-filing is
compulsory.
The Income Tax department (Aayakar Bhavan,
Mahatma Gandhi Salai,
Nungambakkam) will operate special counters for three
days from Monday, July 29,
to meet the rush in filing of
returns. The counters will be
open from 9.30 a.m to 5.30
p.m
The IT forms for filing returns can be downloaded from
www.incometaxindia.gov.in/
download_all.asp
The last date for filing of
returns is July 30.

I entered a school for the first time after friend Hitler
went bonkers and inaugurated World War 2 and father

Hindi and Malayalam, my own mother tongue, Malayalam
won the day. Hang Bhagawat and Rajnath. I love
Malayalam, my good old mother tongue. I refused to learn
Tamil even though I have been here since 1945, but helping
hands in my profession always held me aloft. What matters is the ticker called HEART and not the words spewed
by the tongue-in-ckeek. Hello Rajnath and Bhagwat, learn
Malayalam.

Temporary fix to bad roads leads to problems again

busy roads which are in bad condition. I use these roads regularly
to go to office.The top layer has
come off and the roads are riddled
with potho-les.After repeated
complaints to the officials to relay the stretch, Chennai Corporation has instead found a short
route to fix the problem.They have
dumped concrete mix for filling
potholes and leveling the roads
instead of tarring it.With the recent rains, the temporary fix has
again given way and the road remains rough and difficult to motor.I
therefore appeal to the Corporation to re-lay the damaged portion

July 23 has approved a free
trade LPG scheme for selling 5
kg cooking gas cylinders at
commercial rate through company owned retail outlets
(COCO) of State-run oil companies.
According to an oil company
executive, this scheme will
benefit consumers in big cities
who are mobile and do not need
a permanent LPG connection.
Such consumers need flexibility for getting the LPG cylinders as per their convenience
and their needs can also be
fulfilled by smaller quantities
of LPG.
The cost of the 5-kg cylinder
will be Rs. 361.

OBITUARY
ATHI SUNDARACHARIAR
Athi Sundarachariar (popularly known as
Athi Vathiyar) (resident of 47/10, Thambiah
Reddy Street, West Mambalam) passed away
on July 21.
He was 90 and had been a resident of
Mambalam for past 50 years. He was a Vedic
scholar from Tirupathi veda padasala and had attained
Acharyan Thiruvadi.He performed Veda parayanam in
Sathyanarayana Perumal Temple (West Mambalam) for more
than 25 years. He is survived by his wife, sons, daughters,
grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In reply to the petitions filed against the Chennai

Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), its officials have assured
Madras High Court that it will not demolish
Ramaswami Mudaliar Choultry, a 100-year-old heritage building opposite Central Railway Station,
Poonamallee High Road, for the Metro Rail project.
But other commercial structures on the plot, except
a hotel, will have to make way for the project.
The choultry (lodging house) came into existence
after the government allotted land in August 1888 to
Ramaswami Mudaliar with a condition that it accommodate train passengers free of cost. The government
also made it clear that it could take back the 1.33-acre
land without paying any compensation if it is used for
any other purpose. Now the land bears several commercial establishments, including a hotel.
In 2010, the government realized that the land was
required for the Metro Rail project and also that a large
portion of the property was being used by commercial
establishments on lease or sub-lease, in violation of
the original grant condition. It sought to take over the
choultry and other properties through the Administrator General and Official Trustee (AG & OT), and a
batch of petitions were filed against the takeover
attempt.
Rao Bahadur Raja Sir Savalai Ramaswami
Mudaliar, a dubash during the British regime, constructed the building for the use of train commuters for
a short stay free of cost after they alighted at the
railway station. Mudaliar died in 1911 at the age of 71
and was buried in a private burial ground off Kilpauk
Garden Road, Kilpauk. His statue was erected by his
friends in the choultry.

Swamiji (junior pontiff of
Pejawara Adhokshaja Mutt),
is observing Chathurmasya
Vratham in Raghavendraswami temple (Raghaviah
Road, T. Nagar).
He started the vrath on July
22 and will conclude it on September 10,
Devotees are invited to the
Mutt and have dharshan of
Swamiji and get his blessings.
He is willing to give spiritual
lectures in the evening hours in
nearby residences as many
may not be in a position to visit
the Mutt daily.
He heads the Prahalada
Gurukul in Udipi.
He also runs the 27-acre
Neelavara Goshala (18 kms
from Sei Krishna Temple,
Udupi) which houses more than
1000 cows including abandoned and old ones which oth-

The goshala also houses a
separate building with facilities to perform last rites, obeisance, homams and gho-sevas.

and a residential school are
some of his ongoing projects.
