Hi all,
Here is my contribution to the art of guitar strumming. I must here
congratulate Bandbaaja for the excellent work in helping people
understand strumming better. I firmly urge people to read the threads
below to better understand strumming. I know there could be other
threads too in the forum. However, I haven't gone through all the posts
yet; so for now, check these out:

The heart of music is time. Be it a single instrument, a singer, group of
singers, or a group of instruments--all are bound by time to start, stop,
fade, or to renter the musical composition based on time. Tabala and
Mridangam are primarily used to keep time in Indian music; while the
drum is generally used to keep time in rock and other forms of western
music. The guitar provides not only the time but also provides the partial
melody along with the time. Thus the sound of the chord gives the
melody part while the strumming provides the timing.
DRUMS
I digress a little bit from the main path to introduce a little bit about
drums, which would help beginners understand the concept better. The
biggest drum is the bass drum, the one which has the pedal and which the
drummer kicks to produce the sound. It is the same drum which is used to
accompany marching. The cymbal makes a sort of clanging noise. It is
the one which is shaped like a plate and towers over the drum set. The
other drum stroke you here is made by the snare drum (not as loud as the
bass drum. This drum in India is also sometimes referred to as the "tomtom."
When I refer to the bass drum I shall call that stroke "kick"; the cymbal
"chick"; and the snare drum as "snare" or "tom."
Measuring time
4/4
This is the easiest time with each stroke falling on a quarter note. Now let
us assume that our whole note has a duration of 2 seconds. So each
quarter note therefore will be half a second. So for each quarter note
count a number. So as you count one number every half second "1-2-3-4"
the drummer might play, kick-chick-tom-chick. This is also called "the
common time Represented with a C.
3/4
This is actually a misnomer. In this rhythm, there are 3 strokes and
actually should be called 3/3. Anyway, the experts have labeled it 3/4 so
we go that way. So as you count one number every half second, 1-2-3, the
drummer plays kick-tom-tom. Duration of each cycle will be one-and-ahalf seconds. Are you lost? So am I!
6/8
In this rhythm as you count 1 number every half second, you will be
counting 1-2-3-4-5-6. Yes, this will be for 3 seconds. The drummer will
be playing kick-chick-chick-tom-chick-chick.
12/8
This timing is not very frequently played. However, it is good to know.
As you count 1 number for each half second, the drummer plays 2 strokes
in the same interval. The counting therefore will be 1-2-3-4-5-6 like the
previous 6/8 rhythm; but the drummer doubles up and plays kick-chickchick-kick-chick-chick-tom-chick-chick-tom-chick-chick.
7/8
This rhythm is also common in Hindi songs. Here, there will be 7
quarters and the duration is, of course, 3 and a half seconds. Counting 1
number for each half second, in this measure you will be counting 1-2-34-5-6-7. The drummer will play, kick-chick-chick-tom-chick-tom-chick.
MY STRUMMING
I am reasonably comfortable in strumming. I can easily replicate any
rhythm with relative ease. From my childhood I have been sort of rhythm
oriented. Doors, table surfaces, cardboard boxes, and any solid surfaces
for that matter were good enough for my fingers to create general
rhythmic patterns. Influenced by listening to maestros like Zakhir
Hussain, I thought I would learn Tabala. Visions of being like Zakhir
were the driving force. Around circa 1993/1994, I joined tabala classes. I
suit "papa kehtha hai". Some would say that the third count in that song
should have a stroke. The idea here is, however, to get the beginners to
have a feel of the rhythm they are playing. So that is why I have
eliminated that stroke. Again, the beginners are encouraged to begin the
cycle starting on G chord, shifting to Em, going next to C, switching to
D, and finally returning to G to begin a new cycle.
Hope I have made myself clear to as many newbies as possible. More
examples and exercises in my next post!!!!!

Was actually replying to a query posed by Madhura, and thought this could be a part of a Beginner's
Tutorial.
While learning the guitar and the notes, and chords, some students find it difficult to actually play
the chords of a song in a basic strumming pattern.
Of course some take up strumming very easily and it also sometimes comes naturally.
I had to go thru major patience levels to grasp chord positions, but I got thru with the STRUMMING
barrier quite naturally.
So this post here is not for the naturally gifted strummers, but for people who find problems in the
DOWN UP MOVEMENT of strumming.
FIRSTLY,
While learning strumming, u have to be conscious of your hand movement to match the counts etc.
HERE you will find your hand moving more like a mechanical robot. BUT the art of strumming begins
with having your right hand low down and up in a smooth natural movement.
SECOND:
STRUMMING is an ART based on a simple DOWN-UP movement of your hand. So your hand should
ALWAYS move down and up,
and based on the pattern that you are playing you either choose to HIT or MISS the strings while
going down or HIT or MISS it while coming up.
For example some basic strumming patterns to Practice are as follows:
NOTES BEFORE YOU BEGIN
1) First divide the basic counts into a pattern like this: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
2) Move your hand down on ONE and UP on the AND (&) and keep this going on continuously.
3) Wherever in the examples there is an X mark, you DO NOT stop your hand movement, but you
simply DONT play on that X.
Example 1:
Hitting all the counts:
1--&--2--&--3--&--4--& | 1--&--2--&--3--&--4--& |
D--U--D--U--D--U--D--U | D--U--D--U--D--U--D--U |
Example 2:
Hitting on 1-2&3-4&
1--&--2--&--3--&--4--& | 1--&--2--&--3--&--4--& |

APART from these strumming patterns there are quite a few complicated ones, - some which require
you to MUTE the strings after you BANG on it ONCE. - some which require you to HIT the strings
hard with your right hand, but completely MUTED by your LEFT hand.
Like the BOSSANOVA pattern, if you remember George Michael's Faith, or Allah Ke Bandhe the
pattern doesnt let the strings RING
Basically the sound shouldn't be CHANNNNGGGGGG it should rather be CHANK!

Could never strum properly for the first two 3-odd months that I was learning ... then finally struck
gold with the song Wonderwall, which was the first song I could strum and play perfectly.
Now, I am reasonably comfortable with most strumming patterns, but just cannot get the hang of
Bossa Nova ...

P.S. The rythms I have learnt from my sir not only specify the movement (down/up), but also which
strings have to be played (as in, either the three thin ones or the thicker three ...) Will post some of

Yes Raj,
Rhythm Patterns also importantly need u to know which strings you are strumming.
This matters a lot when you are playing the electric guitar, and especially if your distortion pedal is
on, u will really sound like BAD!!!
But for beginners, on the acoustic guitar, this full chord strumming pattern can be quite useful

Hey is there a tutorial for reading sheet music/intervals for guitar on IGT ?... i'm really bad in theory
u know ... just once.... i'd like to flash some techno mumbo-jumbo about scales and notes and stuff

the strumming pattern in "allah ke bande" is an interesting one, as u pointed out. that one can be a
good exercise for people who are learning different strumming patterns.

Here are a few songs based on the strumming patterns mentioned here:
1. 1-2&-&4& - Last kiss, come as you are, hotel california, country roads, papa kehte hai, chura liya
hai, cats in the cradle, given to fly.
2. 1-2&3-4& - All apologies, dum maro dum, living nextdoor to alice
A li'l word of caution, this may not be exactly how the original songs are played, it's just how i play
them and the chord changes match the length of the strum. Feel free to point out any alternate
strums, you may be using for the songs I mentioned.

i realied i find it impossible to follow the instructons and play in proper timing .. i always get
confused :p: then i said screw it.. let me play my ways.. so i played papa kehte hain.. then reverse
engineered what i was playing and it matched with what u poseted :)

also BB gave strumming for quarter and 8th notes. next step would be to play 16ths.. and
syncapations. BB has already given some patterns which have syncapations..
syncapation is playing something off beat..
for example.. say we have a a 4/4 beat with 4 8th notes, and 4 8th note rests or silence denoted by

or 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 with & denoting the silence.

im no guitar expert but i started on an acoustic. i feel my strumming is pretty good if i may say so
myself but for the most part, wen i was just begining it was more fun to mess around with the
chord.
mess around and make news way to play certain songs, most of the time it'l sound better. naturally
ul develop the ear for lisening out to the struming pattern. its one of those things which takes time.

Helo ...i am mathai...i need a help from u guys..i have learned guitar during my child hood and then

have already started with this notations..but i dont feel any advantage from it...and pleze someone

I'm Danny, n I've been playing for a little over 2 yrs now.. was taught from a friend a little .. n since
then its all been my effort.. so I have no formal training ..
there one problem I face n its very bugging..
though strumming comes naturally to me.. but there are songs when I find it very hard to strumm n
sing along..
"Allah ke bande" being a classic case.. I can play the song.. I can sing it too.. but I find it hard to do
both at the same time..
even "2 steps behind".. I find it hard to play n sing..
so normally I end up making acoustic versions(plucking ) of these songs.. :-)
what should I do.. ? how to get over this hurdle..
pls advice

Was actually replying to a query posed by Madhura, and thought this could be a part of a Beginner's
Tutorial.
While learning the guitar and the notes, and chords, some students find it difficult to actually play
the chords of a song in a basic strumming pattern.
Of course some take up strumming very easily and it also sometimes comes naturally.
I had to go thru major patience levels to grasp chord positions, but I got thru with the STRUMMING
barrier quite naturally.
So this post here is not for the naturally gifted strummers, but for people who find problems in the
DOWN UP MOVEMENT of strumming.
FIRSTLY,
While learning strumming, u have to be conscious of your hand movement to match the counts etc.
HERE you will find your hand moving more like a mechanical robot. BUT the art of strumming begins
with having your right hand low down and up in a smooth natural movement.
SECOND:
STRUMMING is an ART based on a simple DOWN-UP movement of your hand. So your hand should
ALWAYS move down and up,
and based on the pattern that you are playing you either choose to HIT or MISS the strings while
going down or HIT or MISS it while coming up.
For example some basic strumming patterns to Practice are as follows:
NOTES BEFORE YOU BEGIN
1) First divide the basic counts into a pattern like this: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
2) Move your hand down on ONE and UP on the AND (&) and keep this going on continuously.
3) Wherever in the examples there is an X mark, you DO NOT stop your hand movement, but you
simply DONT play on that X.
Example 1:
Hitting all the counts:
1--&--2--&--3--&--4--& | 1--&--2--&--3--&--4--& |
D--U--D--U--D--U--D--U | D--U--D--U--D--U--D--U |
Example 2:
Hitting on 1-2&3-4&

ALL THESE STRUMMING PATTERNS are OPEN PATTERNS where you can let EACH OF YOUR BANG to
RING...
APART from these strumming patterns there are quite a few complicated ones, - some which require
you to MUTE the strings after you BANG on it ONCE. - some which require you to HIT the strings
hard with your right hand, but completely MUTED by your LEFT hand.
Like the BOSSANOVA pattern, if you remember George Michael's Faith, or Allah Ke Bandhe the
pattern doesnt let the strings RING
Basically the sound shouldn't be CHANNNNGGGGGG it should rather be CHANK!

that u may have... e.g. how to read tabs. by reading previous posts u are more likely to get a better
response than trying to get people to give a response to a repeated question (sory if i sound a bit
harsh)

Please ask any musician friend of yours to explain TIMINGS like 2/4 , 4/4 , 3/4 , 6/8. etc, and try to
understand what is a BAR and to understand BAR COUNTING.
This has to be physically explained i feel, the books cannot explain this in a very effective way.
This becomes very important, and once u know to count, u will not require chord charts with lyrics
asking u to change at a particular syllable in a word.
Meaning:
If you need chords for Papa Kehte Hain
you will not need
.....Papa keh te hain ba da naam ka re ga

u will only require chord charts that go

i never understood all the differences between 3/4 and 6/8 4/4 and 2/4
i think i kinda know.. i just go with the feel when i play.. baandbaaja do u know i dont count.. in fact
i have big arguments with some percussionists who will count till 48 and a half before starting a
song etc..
i agree one should know the various meeters.. i kinda know them intuitively i guess..
like someone told me that allah tero naam has a complex taal.. (forgot name in hinustani)
it goes like 123-1234 i guess that would make it 7/4... but i have never counted anything while

In simple words
4/4 means 4 quarter notes in one bar
3/4 means 3 quarter notes in one bar
6/8 means 6 eighth notes in one bar
7/8 means 7 eighth notes in one bar
now why i said i cant explain it on paper, is because u need to understand this quarter note / eighth
note thing etc. the idea was not to teach you to READ COUNTING, but to get you to count BARS. to
get a basic feel of the song.

To get you started, the "time signature" represents two numbers x/y which can be deciphered like
this: The upper number (x) represents the number of beats in one bar. The lower number tells you
how many beats constitute one wholenote duration. Thus 4/4 means there are four notes per bar
(count 1 (loudly) 2 3 4 1(loudly) 2 3 4) and 4 such beats form one wholenote (i.e. each beat is
1/4th the duration of a whole note). The duration of a whole note is decided by the tempo at which
you play.
Disclaimer: Based on my limited knowledge, hope this is correct.

@mathai - 6/8 is faster than 3/4. 6/8 is 6 eighth notes per measure. While 3/4 is 3 quarter notes
per measure. Its like....in 6/4 u play two notes in the time, u play one note in 3/4. So, its faster. It
is confusing i know, but thats the best i can explain.

The song that tricks me is Khabi to nazar by Adnam, I think it is. The first chorus is easy. But I am

A song can be divided into parts for better understanding.
Here you need to know that all the parts mentioned below might not be applicable to all songs.
For instance a lot of songs first start with an ALAAP or ADLIB, which means the very beginning of a
song which need not be in any fixed time signature, it depends on how the singer wishes to stretch
it.
Papa Kehte Hain does not have an adlib as such (except the speech he gives up front) Typical simple
adlibs are like the La Lala lala la laaaa in Mere Angne Mein sung by amitabh. Example of an adlib is
the way Kishore Kumar stars Neele Neele Amber in a slow manner.
Then there is the Overture or the Intro music piece, Example of an overture is the start on guitar
and drums of Aaja Aaja or Churaliya or Chand Mera Dil.
The MUKHDA or the SIGN means the first section of the song by which the song is identified. In our
case the lines Papa Kehte Hain Bada Naam Karega, Beta Hamara Aisa Kaam Karega is the Sign.
The CROSS (I dunno what this is called in Hindi) is generally part of the Mukhda/Sign but variates
from the tune, and generally its a part that can reappear in the song as a separate part without
being part of the mukhda. In our case the lines Magar Yeh To, Koi Na Jaane, Ke Meri Manzil Hain
Kahan is the CROSS.
Then there is the INTERLUDE (again I dunno what you call this in hindi but we musicians refer to it
as M1 and M2 and M3 in the sequence it appears in the song). The interludes are pieces of music
that appear in between the paragraphs of vocal lines.
The STANZA or ANTRA are the paragraphs that follow the Mukhda after an interlude. In our case the
lines are Baitthe Hai Milke, Sab Yaar Apne, Sabke Dilon Mein, Arman Yeh Hai.........till the sign tune
reappears.
Then there is the UNDERTURE or Exit music if at all

awesome post BB.... you guys here are my music teachers for indian music. i have read about
measures, notations and all stff but in gospel or english music which somehow I can't relate to
much.
Having spent 25 out of my 29 yrs in India, it is hindi music and our heroes with guitars in hand who
fueled this mood to pick up the guitar. :p:

just try counting according to the sec needle of ur watch & u can track it easily how it works....
