West boys cross country 3rd at state

The West Bend West boys team led local
runners at the state cross country meet in
Wisconsin Rapids Oct. 31, finishing third in
the Division I race.
West was led by Luke Guttormson, who
finished ninth in team competition and
15th overall with a time of 16:26.12. He was
followed by teammates Jaden Salinas (13th
team, 21st overall, 16:35.03) Matt Stoll
(18th team, 27th overall, 16:40.70), Jordan
Gehrke (22nd team, 32nd overall, 16:44.14)
and Petyon Janto (52nd team, 82nd overall,
17:13.88). Also running for West were Tyler
Kozlowski (92nd team, 137th overall,
17:39.70) and Max Hardy (115th team,
164st overall, 17:59.36).
When reached for comment a few days
after the meet, West Bend East boys cross
country coach Scott Hammers said the team
had high aspirations heading into the meet.
"Our goal was to win, a realistic goal,"
he said. He then added: "Am I disappointed? No, the guys ran as well as they could
run."
Hammers added that a top three is very
hard to get at the state competition.
"It's something that the guys should be
extremely proud of," he said.
Hammers noted that Guttormson had a
15th team place in his first trip at state
while Salinas kept getting better as the season progressed, becoming the number two

runner on the team by the end of the season. He also noted that Janto is only a
sophomore who scored a top 100 finish. He
added that three of the five scoring runners
on the squad will return for next year.
Other results
In the Division 3 boys team competition, Living Word Lutheran finished 12th.
The Timberwolves were led by Andy
Barnhart, who finished eighth in team competition and 18th overall with a time of
17:17.64. He was followed by teammates
Michael Axtman (18th team, 40th overall,
17:44.97), Matthew Axtman (74th team,
113th overall, 18:52.01), Grant Fox (82nd
team, 122nd overall, 19:08.28) and Patrick
Cassidy (94th team, 134th overall,
19:45.65). Also running for Living Word
were Simon Heller (100th team, 140th overall, 20:11.48) and Alex Kashhevarof (111th
team, 151st overall, 21:10.74).
In the Division I girls competition, West
Bend West finished 19th. Abby Janto led
West with a 33rd team finish and 48th overall with a time of 19:51.52. She was followed by Brianna Renner (67th team, 108th
overall, 20:42.42), Haley Rubisch (89th

The history of Veterans Day

Veterans Day has taken on a new meaning for many Americans since September
11 and the beginning of the conflicts in
Iraq and Afghanistan. Only a few years
ago, many Americans did not know an
individual who had been in active combat
duty in the last 20 years. After the
Vietnam War, the military became much
less valued and much less popular in the
mainstream culture, but, today, all veterans are honored for their service on
Veterans Day.
The first Armistice Day celebration
took place in 1919 and marked the first
anniversary of the Armistice. Thirty states
made it a legal holiday and President
Woodrow Wilson led the festivities.

Armistice Day was made a federal holiday

in 1938, making it one of the most recent
holidays in America. The name was officially changed to Veterans Day with legislation proposed in 1953.
Unlike religious and secular holidays
like Christmas and Thanksgiving, there are
very few official celebrations of Veterans
Day in America, although this too is rapidly changing as more veterans return from

Most holidays in the United States have
been moved to Mondays to create a long
weekend. The same was done for Veterans
Day, but veterans groups protested and it

was moved back to the traditional date of

November 11. Most groups thought it
would raise the profile of the holiday, but
it has, in fact, had the opposite effect.
While more people are observing the holiday in recent years, most businesses do not
close for the day. Only government offices
and banks are closed. Official ceremonies
center on the Tomb of the Unknowns in
Arlington
National
Cemetery

Washington, D.C. A color guard from all
branches of the military patrols the site
through the night, a presidential wreath is
laid and Taps is played over the grave.
Veterans Day is both a state and a fed-

eral holiday in all states. It coincides with

international celebrations of Armistice Day
and Remembrance Day in other parts of the
world. The holiday is observed on
November 11 because major hostilities in
World War I were ended formally at 11 a.m.
on the 11th day of November, the 11th
month, in 1918 when Germany signed the
Armistice at the Versailles Palace in Paris.
Veterans Day has a different focus than
Memorial Day, as Veterans Day is intended
to honor and thank the living veterans in
the United States for their service and to
acknowledge their contributions to
American society.

Seeing the potential: Living Word qualifies for girls state volleyball tournament

After a fifth place finish in the

Midwest Classic Conference regular season, the Living Word Lutheran girls volleyball team started a late season run
that led to the state tournament.
The Timberwolves finished second in
the conference tournament, which
launched a postseason run which lifted
the team to a trip to state tournament
at the Resch Center in Green Bay. At the

sectional final Oct. 31, Living Word

upset Catholic Central 19-25, 25-22, 2523, 25-20 to earn its first trip to the
tournament.
"I had feeling that we we're going to
make that point," senior Corrianne Cain
said of the final point that earned the
team a trip to the state tourney. "But
then once we did, it was an amazing
feeling that yes, we're finally going to
state and this is not the end."
Senior Natalie Niehueser added that

going to state was "not really" an

expectation heading into the season
because the team hadn't previously
qualified for the tournament.
"I knew we were going to have a
great season because we have a bunch
of great players but I never really
thought of state," she said.
First-year coach Dawn Walker added
that "it's not a goal we had on our list"
at the start of the year.
Walker said that the team went to a

will be facing in the Division 4 semifinal Nov. 6. Newman Catholic is also the
defending state Division 4 champion.
"In my head, (I thought) that's
where we need to be, but I don't know
that I figured we would have accomplished it this year," Walker said.
"That's the level we need to be at."
During the regular season, Walker
noted that during the Oct. 6 game
against Brookfield Academy, the
Timberwolves won the first game and
lost the second.They were winning the
third game 24-17 but lost, which led to
a bad week for the team.
"Two of those matches we should
have taken,"Walker said of the
Brookfield Academy loss and a loss to
University School three days later."
At the next Monday practice, the
team played "minute to win it" games
to get back to having fun. At the Oct.
17 conference tournament, Living Word
beat Kenosha Christian Life and
Brookfield Academy, losing to Lake
Country Lutheran in the tournament
title match, winning the first match
before losing the next two.
"At the conference tournament, we
really stepped it up and then we discovered who were as a team and how we
all worked together," senior Amber
Scholz said.
The postseason run included a dramatic 19-25, 17-25, 25-17, 25-8, 15-12
win over Central Wisconsin Christian in
the Oct. 24 regional final.
"Ever since then, they never give up

She said the team is playing its best
volleyball of the season now, and they
followed up the Central Wisconsin win
by beating Hilbert -- which had been
ranked seventh in the most-recent
state coaches poll -- before topping
Catholic Central. She said the team has
been playing without pressure.
"That's been my thing: Let's just go
in there, no one expected us to be
here," Walker said.
"That's something our coaches said
every game: The pressure is not on us,
that we just have to show up and play
our best volleyball," senior Sophie
Hoelz added.
Niehueser explained that there was
a point during the season with each
player where they started to believe in
themselves, which has made all the
difference.
"We've never won this game, but we
can. I think it's seeing the potential
and faith in ourselves that's really
brought us this far," Niehueser said.
