------------------------------------------------------------------------------1- * Introduction *
[cg010]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------So you want to craft custom gear that can give purple gear you find in-game
a run for its money? You've come to the right place.
Crafting in Amalur is very simple to get into, but you need to know what to
do to get maximum out of it, especially at higher levels. Two skills are
dedicated to gear crafting, Sagecraft and Blacksmithing. Alchemy is for
crafting potions, but the focus of this guide is on crafting gear.
Note that I don't have the strategy guide and all the information in this
guide is based on my findings in-game. There might be some information
missing, which simply means I don't have access to it yet. So, if you find
anything wrong or missing, do let me know.
Finally, this guide was written with PS3 version, but should work for any
version.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------2- * Crafting Skills *
[cg020]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------The two crafting skills are Sagecrafting and Blacksmithing. You maybe
wondering why Sagecrafting is crucial to crafting gear. Let me get a little
ahead of myself and tell you that you can create components with stats of the
gems. What it means is, you can practically create gear with stats of 4
different gems. Let's not get too ahead of ourselves, I'll tell you how to
do that. But first, skill basics.
Sagecrafting lets you strengthen shards to create better shards, use shards
to craft different gems and socket gems crafted into gear with slots. Shards
come in 3 varieties. In the order of increasing effectiveness, they are Cloudy, Lambent, Pristine. With enough points in Sagecrafting, you can
combine poorer shards to get better shards.
Blacksmithing lets you create gear from scratch, provided you have the right
components. Components are found as loot, bought from some vendors, but the
best way to get components is to salvage any gear you're not going to use.
Now, lets take a look at crafting abilities unlocked at different skill levels.
------------------------------------ 2-a - * Sagecrafting * [cg02a]
-----------------------------------For sagecrafting you need to find a Sagecrafting Altar. You encounter your
first one in the village of Gorhart, though you may need to do a side quest
to gain access to it.
Without any points in sagecrafting you can only create gems from Cloudy
shards and can socket gems in gear with slots.
Here is a list of sagecrafting abilities unlocked for each point you put
into sagecrafting. Note that drop quality improves with every single point,

so I will not mention it for cases where other abilities are unlocked.
+---------------------------------------------------------------------------| 1 | Better quality shards drop more often from enemies.
|---------------------------------------------------------------------------| 2 | You can now create gems from LAMBENT quality shards.
|---|-----------------------------------------------------------------------| 3 | You can combine two shards of same quality to make better shards.
|---|-----------------------------------------------------------------------| 4 | Better quality shards drop more often from enemies.
|---|-----------------------------------------------------------------------| 5 | Better quality shards drop more often from enemies.
|---|-----------------------------------------------------------------------| 6 | You can now create gems from PRISTINE quality shards.
|---|-----------------------------------------------------------------------| 7 | Better quality shards drop more often from enemies.
|---|-----------------------------------------------------------------------| 8 | You can now craft EPIC gems.
|---|-----------------------------------------------------------------------| 9 | Better quality shards drop more often from enemies.
|---|-----------------------------------------------------------------------| 10| You can remove socketed gems.
+---------------------------------------------------------------------------You will want to hit Level6 ASAP. For Armor, Epic gems give some of the best
stats and passive effects. If you are only interested in crafting weapons,
you can max out Sagecrafting at Level 6 as weapons can't use Epic Gems.
Otherwise, aim to hit Level 8.
-------------------------------------- 2-b - * Blacksmithing * [cg02a]
-------------------------------------For Blacksmithing you need access to a Blacksmithing Forge. You encounter
your first one in village of Gorhart, at The Corner Shop.
Without any points in Blacksmithing you can repair your gear, craft gear with
2 components and salvage white named gear.
Here is a list of Blacksmithing abilities unlocked for each point you put
into it. Note that repair kit efficiency improves with every single point,
so I will not mention it for cases where other abilities are unlocked.
+---------------------------------------------------------------------------| 1 | You can harvest components from defeated enemies.
|---------------------------------------------------------------------------| 2 | You can now create gear with 3 components.
|---|-----------------------------------------------------------------------| 3 | You can salvage Infrequent Equipment [Green named gear].
|---|-----------------------------------------------------------------------| 4 | You can create gear with 4 components.
|---|-----------------------------------------------------------------------| 5 | Your skill with repair kits is improved.
|---|-----------------------------------------------------------------------| 6 | You can now salvage Rare Equipment [Blue named gear].
|---|-----------------------------------------------------------------------| 7 | You can use gems when crafting equipment.
|---|-----------------------------------------------------------------------| 8 | Your skill with repair kits is improved.
|---|------------------------------------------------------------------------

| 9 | Your skill with repair kits is improved.

|---|-----------------------------------------------------------------------| 10| You can create "Mastercrafted" equipment.
+---------------------------------------------------------------------------In this case you will want to hit Level10 as early as possible.
Mastercrafted equipment means any gear you craft, will have a bonus added
stat. It is mostly +Physical Damage for weapons and +Armor for armor.
As you can see, any item can use up to four components. These 4 consist of
1 Core component unique to each item, a required component and 2 optional
components. At level 7 you can add a gem to these components.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------3- * Components and Gems *
[cg030]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------Before we go any further, we need to know different components and gems that
go into making any gear.
Gems are created by combining shards. For now, I'll only be listing gems made
from Pristine shards and that too the ones that give best stats for a given
effect. Why? Coz the focus of this guide is to make best gear. Gems crafted
from lower shards will have similar effects but lower stats. If enough people
request, I will add other gems in the guide, later.
Note that all gear, armor or weapons, can use Utility Gems.
Chest components of all armor, robes for Mage armor, can use Epic Gems too.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------4- * Crafting - HowTo*

[cg040]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------Now we get to the core of the guide. All the text so far has been in
preparation for this. But before we go further, want to let you know of some
assumptions this guide makes at this point:
1. Sagecrafting: Minimum 6, recommended 8.
2. Blacksmithing: Minimum 7, recommended 10.
3. You have access to altars and forges.
4. You have been salvaging equipment you don't need for some components,
quality doesn't matter.
In this section I will teach you how to create gear with stats you want by
using gems and transferring their stats to the components you use for crafting
gear.
--------------Basic Strategy
--------------Basic crafting strategy can be summed up as follows:
1. Create a gem with stats you want.

2.
3.
4.
5.

Create a basic item with gem created in 1.

Salvage the created item to get component with stats of the gem.
Repeat 1-3 for each of the different components used to make the item.
Craft the desired gear with components created in step4.

Sounds easy enough? Think you can do it? Go ahead and stop reading, you know
all you need to know already.
Now, if you're still reading this, you're ready for detailed strategy. But
before we do, remember, it works on salvaging equipment with gems used for
crafting, not gems slotted into slots. It may, but has never for me. If it
works for you, do let me know.
-----------------Detailed Strategy
-----------------As an example, I will try to make Faeblades with stats of 4 gems.
1. Create a gem with stats you want
----------------------------------Refer to the Gems list above to decide which gem you want to make.
e.g. 2 Fire Shards to get Gem of Combustion [weapon gem].
17 fire damage.
10 burning over 6 seconds.
I could've used Gem of Inceneration too, but wanted to demonstrate another
aspect of this trick which you'll come to know later.
2. Create an item with that gem.
-------------------------------When creating an item you need at least 2 components, 2 optional and one
optional gem. The first component is unique to each item. Refer the
components section for different component for different weapons.
But before you do anything, save. Why? In case you don't get the component you
wanted, you can reload this save and get your gem back. It maybe confirmation
bias or just pure luck, but I seem to get better luck if I try again later.
What you want to do is, use the worst components you have as your component
1, worst available as component 2 and skip component 3 and 4. Then use the gem
you created in Step 1.
Why do we do it this way? Almost always, the component with gem stats is the
2nd component used in crafting. You may get other component [if used] but
I haven't in about 100 attempts. That is why we only use 2 core components,
why waste anything? Besides, you reduce the probability of getting a useless
components on salvaging.
e.g. Faeblades
Curved Steel Blades
Crude Fulcrum
none
none
Gem of Combustion.
THIS IS IMPORTANT: Make sure you save after creating your weapon.

3. Salvage the created item to get component with stats of the gem.
------------------------------------------------------------------Salvage the item you created in previous step. You should get a component
with same stats as the gem. If you don't get component with gem stats,
reload the save and try again till it happens. This is the only annoying
part of this guide. But if you use only 2 required components, you will get
required part sooner than later, another reason to use minimum possible
components.
Now, here comes interesting part.
Going by our example, I got a Master Flamed Fulcrum [depends on
Blacksmithing level] which had 21 Fire damage and 13 Burning over 7
seconds. Notice how I got better stats than the gem I used?
4. Repeat 1-3 to get different components used in an item.
---------------------------------------------------------At this point we have one component, the second one, with the desired stats.
We need 2 more components. This is where we refer the table of components
above. Let us use example of my Faeblades.
Faeblades - Curved Blades, Fulcrum, Rivets, Grip.
We got Fulcrum... Rivets and Grip to go. Remember, we mostly get gem stats
in 2nd component. So, what do we do? We craft items which use Rivets and
Grip as 2nd component. Here is a list of components and items that have
them as 2nd component
Hilt - Daggers, Longsword, Greatsword
Rivets - Chausses, Helm
Bindings - None.
Shaft - Staff, Hammer
Handle - Chakram, Sceptre
Grip - Shield, Gauntlets, Handwraps
Fulcrum - Faeblades, Longbows
Note that Bindings are not used as 2nd component in anything. So what to
do? Well, you gotta try your luck and use Bindings as 3rd or 4th
component and hope you salvage bindings with gem stats. I had better
luck getting good bindings from salvaging Blue named gear I found in game.
So, to get Rivets, we need to create and salvage a Helm or Chausses...
and to get Grip we create and salvage a Shield/Gauntlet/Handwrap. Now,
these are armor items, so we can't use weapon gems in them, but we CAN
use Utility gems.
So, just repeat step 3, this time with Helm and then with a shield. Pick
any item you have more basic components for.
e.g.
Gem of Precision - 7% chance to critical hit.
Regenerating Gem - +2 Health Regen
Gem of Precision on salvaging gave me Flawless Magnifying Rivets.
Regnerating Gem gave me Flawless Sustaining Grip.

5. Craft the uber item where each component has stats from some gem.
-------------------------------------------------------------------This is where it all comes together. Use the best available base component
[Prismere for blades, Ebony or longbows etc.], the 3 gem encrusted components
we created, and finally, yet another weapon gem. So, we get a weapon with
practically 2 weapon gems and 2 utility gems.
Here are a couple examples of gear I crafted:
My Faeblades [Level16]:
Attack rating 173
59 Physical - Base component.
35 Piercing
+7% chance to critical hit - Rivets [I think]
+5 Health [dunno how this came about]
+7% Physical Damage - Bindings.
21 Fire Damage - [Master Fulcrum, could've tried for Flawless]
13 Burning Damage over 7 seconds
30 Lightning Damage - Gem of Combustion.
15 Shocking Damage over 10 seconds.
My longbow [Level11]:
Attack rating 162
55 Physical
25 piercing
+5% Poison damage
+5% poison damage.
+2 Health regen per sec
21 Fire Damage
13 Burning Damage
48 Poison damage over 7 seconds.
Note in both cases I settled for Master Fulcrums for fire damage, when
flawless would've given me 30 and 15 over 10 seconds. I made the bow about
level 24 and Faeblades around level32. Now that I am 36, I am getting Fine
Prismere and Ebony components, so raw damage will increase.
6. [Optional] Duplication/Transfer of stats
This is something that you don't need gems for. If you have gear with
desired stat, it is very much possible that you can get more than one
component with the same stat.
Also, if you have a component with desired stat but want it on a
different component, you can create an item that uses both component types
and on salvaging you *can* get stats transferred to other component, or if
lucky, on both components.
e.g Lets say you have Flawless Hardened Rivets [+100 Health] but you need
Flawless Hardened Bindings because you want +100 Health on your Handwraps.
So, what you do is make Mage Shoes with those Rivets and on salvaging you
have a chance to get Bindings with +100 Health that you can use in your
Handwraps.

-------------------------------------- 4-a - * Mastercrafting * [cg04a]

-------------------------------------Once you max out Blacksmithing skill, you can create Mastercrafted Gear.
What this means is, any gear you create will have bonus stats on top
of ones you get from the components. The bonus you get depends on gear type
and is fixed for each gear type. The amount of bonus depends on the quality
of the core component. I have listed bonuses for top tier components, lower
tier will have smaller bonuses.
Note that I tested these with Rogue and Warrior Armor versions.
+-----------------------------------------------------------+
| Gear
| Bonus [for top tier core component]
|
|-----------------------------------------------------------|
| Weapons
| +7% Damage
|
|-----------------------------------------------------------|
| Shields
| +10% Melee/Ranged/Magic Block Efficacy
|
|-----------------------------------------------------------|
| Head Gear | +6% Experience Bonus
|
|-----------------------------------------------------------|
| Chest Gear | +16% Physical Resistance
|
|-----------------------------------------------------------|
| Hand Gear | +16% Mana
|
|-----------------------------------------------------------|
| Leg Gear
| +16% Bleeding Resistance
|
|-----------------------------------------------------------|
| Feet Gear | +16% Health
|
+-----------------------------------------------------------+
Once I have salvaged all tiers of core components in my game, will update
with bonus for each tier core component.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------5- * Crafting Reference Table *
[cg050]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------One you get hang of the technique, this is table you should refer to get the
desired gear. This lists:
Every Flawless stat possible.
Components that can spawn with that effect.
Gems that can provide the given effect.
Why is this necessary? So far in my testing, if I use a gem with higher stats
than the equivalent flawless component, I just don't get the stats on my
component. If you manage to get a component with better stats than one listed
here, definitely let me know. You'll get my thanks and a named credit.
What does it mean? It gives you a good idea of gems that are better fit for
being used as a gem in your crafted weapon as those stats may not carry over
at all.
e.g. Flawless Grips give +20% to Armor. Flawless Gem gives +30% armor. So,
best case scenario maybe getting 20% Flawless grips from your Flawless Gem.
We also get +20% Armor from Exceptional Gem, which uses Lambent Shards instead
of Pristine shards. So, why waste a higher quality gem when a lower gem would
give the best possible results?
Lets get to the table then.

Each entry in this table captures the following information:

|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
| Effect
| Comma separatec list of components
|
|
| Effect-Name

e.g. If we consider first entry, it tells us:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------6- * Farming, Tips, and Tricks*
[cg060]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------To get most out of crafting, you need to prepare in advance, i.e. even before
you got enough points to make most out of it. You need to be ready with
different components. Also, if you been farming for good components early
on, it will save you the effort and time in reloading again and again to
get desired components.
Here are a few tips and tricks that helped me a lot.
1. Any gear that you don't need at all [e.g. Hammers if playing as pure
Sorcery] should almost always be sold for money early on. You need money
to afford trainings to max out Sagecrafting and Blacksmithing ASAP.
2. Any gear that has good stats, and can yield components that you may need,
should be salvaged.
3. Any gear of type that you use should never be sold, but salvaged.
4. Always strengthen your shards to Pristine quality and never ever make any
gem with non pristine shards.
5. Get Detect Hidden to level 6 ASAP. You'll be not only finding better gear

to salvage [hidden doors] but you'll be able to get some good components from
disarming mines and traps.
These should make sure that when you actually get around to crafting, you
have decent enough components to get started.
Here are some good spots for farming components:
1. Antelopes give some good components. Kill one whenever you see.
2. Crabs in Plains of Ethariel also give good Crit components. No matter
what class you are, Critical Damage/Chance is always welcome.
3. As part of Scholia Arcania faction questline, you go through 3 dungeons
with LOADS of traps and mines. Don't go in them till you have enough points
in Detect Hidden to salvage components from traps. I've found Greater,
Master and even Flawless components in those dungeons [depening on level
you go in them].
4. During the final quest mission, you will find lots of Prismere quality
gear lying around [well, depends on level at which you do it]. Irrespective
of your level, it will be the best raw gear you can find at that point. Loot
it all and salvage it. May not be good enough for use, but are perfect for
salvaging.

[cg070]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------This will be a perenially work-in-progress. This is YOUR section. If crafted
something special and want to share with others, this is your platform to
share and gloat.
When submitting for this section, make sure you give enough information to
help others craft similar gear. Which means:
1. Components used.
2. How you got those components [gems used].

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------If you spotted any error, missing information, or have any tip to contribute
to the guide, or have inputs on something that I should add to guide feel
free to contact me.
You can contact me by email [jutanotherid -at- hotmail -dot- com] though best
would be to track me on KoA:R PS3 boards at GameFaqs.com. You can also
message me on GFaqs.
When emailing make sure to include KoA:R in subject line. You can send me
viruses and stuff if you want but I don't open any mails from someone
I don't know and never ever download attachments even from ones I know.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------Big Huge Games for making this game.
EA for... errrr publishing it without any Multiplayer.
Valor_Phoenix and one more user from GFaqs PS3 KoA:R boards I can't recall
name of for the original idea that led me to experiment with crafting and
resulted in this guide. Thank you.
noz3r0 at GFaqs for his amazingly detailed FAQ/Walkthrough and letting me use
the information in his guide. Also, for the giving me idea on how to present
components in the reference table.
Myst Mast for his help in spotting and correcting errors in component
tables, and confirming that Official Guide's Blacksmithing section has
Trims and Strings confused.
To all those who sent in submissions for Hall of Fame.
Folks at PS3t.org for their feedback on the basic work-in-progress version
of this guide.
