CONCLUSION

INTRODUCTION
The word curriculum is derived from the Latin word currere
which means run. Thus curriculum means a course to be run for
reaching a certain goal or destination. Mathematics curriculum
forms an important play of the school curriculum forms and
important play of the school curriculum. A good curriculum in fact
is the sum total of good teaching experience that the pupil have
in order to achieve the goals of education which determine the
direction of the experience.
Curriculum study group was established as a group joining
several expects from the field of curriculum research and
development. Since it has grown to four divisions and one section.
The structure is base on main interest of such groups. These are
methodology, science education; arts and cognitive structure
modeling. Curriculum study groups helps to make education more
efficient and effective. Here five groups are selected.

SMP(Scottish Mathematics Project)
Scottish mathematics projects was started in 1961 for
making importance in mathematics curriculum. The mathematics
curriculum was reconstructed in Scotland with the intention of
teaching mathematics heuristically in schools. They prepared with
this intention 5 textbooks pupil studying for GCE (General
Certificate of Education) examination at O level. Later in 1967
they prepared a series of textbooks from A to H levels for the
students studying for CSE examination. These textbooks were
prepared by considering the problems and needs of teachers and
students. It includes a number of experiments and problem
solving activities. They also prepared hand book for the teachers
for effective teaching.
SMSG (School Mathematics Project)
SMSG is a massive endeavor started in USA in 1958 with a view
to improve the existing system of mathematics curriculum.
In addition to this improvement and complication of
study material, SMSG prepared text books separately U.S.A has
published a set of 16 books prepared by SMSG. Eight of these
books are text books for use in secondary school and eight
companion volumes are teacher guide, four book deal with
arithmetic, two with algebra and two geometry.
The primary purpose of SMSG is to improve result and
development in the teaching of school mathematics. The
foundations of SMSG consists primarily in the development of
curriculum teaching material and teaching method. The SMSG
program has broad scope of materials consists of all elementary
and secondary school gratins. It has produced special books for
5

teachers monographs on various topics in mathematics, films,

and translations of materials into other languages. The SMSG was
under the direction of Edward G.Begle. It has carried out the most
extensive and carefully controlled long range education of various
school mathematics. The one of the most comprehensive and
distinctive collection at the Archives of American Mathematics
study group records.
CHARACTERISTICS OF SMSG
Spiral arrangement of subject matter
The use of some concepts such as numbers, sets relation
function
etc
to
organsive subject matters.
Great emphasis should be given the structure of algebra
Inequalities should be taught at the same as Quality
A wider concept of function should be given
Practice should be given in consultation of an equation or a
set of equations.
The SMSG has undoubtedly been the most influential of the
project in the new mathematics. The Inventory of the school
mathematics
study
group
is
available
online
at
www.utexas.edu.html.
NMP(Nuffield of Mathematics Project)
Two major curriculum development project in
primary
and
secondary
Mathematics,
Nuffield
primary
Mathematics (1966-71) and SMP respectively were both founded
by charitable bodies. Each has its associated programme of
teacher development to support curricular and pedagogical
reforms, The first LEA teachers centers for example were an
outcome of the Nuffield project (Watson 1967) meeting a need for
locally base Venues to house resources and to host, meeting of
teachers the project tool principled decision to develop printed
6

resources for teachers the Nuffield Guides and not to produce

textbook for children.
NCERT ( The National Council for Educational Research and
Training).
The National council for Educational Research and Training
(NCERT) is an organization set up by the Government of India,
with head quarters located at New Delhi to assist and advise the
central and state governments an academic matters related to
school education. It was established in 1961.
At the primary stage (from 1to 5 std) the functional
operations and their elementary properties are introduced
concept of length, time, weights etc should be developed. The
child should gain familiarity with geometrical forms and figures.
Simple application of fundamental operations and arithmetical
process to everyday problem should find an important place at
these stage.
At the middle or upper primary stage the number system will
be extended to real numbers and also its operations. Students
should made familiar with the language of algebra and linear
equations and inequalities in one a variable is introduced.
Elementary concepts of statistics should be developed
properties of triangle, quadrilateral, circle, arc and volume of
solids and concepts of regular figures should be developed at this
stage.
In Class 9 and 10 (Secondary Stage) the real life problem
should handled by the child. The knowledge and algebraic phases
should by systematized. The idea of proofs should be developed
in the elementary theory of circles, parallelogram, triangle be
taken. Introduction of trigonometry ratios at use of descriptions.
Statistics made at this stage. Easy of mathematics and natural
mathematical thinking should be particular at the entire course.

Also NCERT organization teachers workshop, refresher

course and in service programmes and teachers handbook, work
book and educational journals etc. for improving quality of
teaching.
Objectives of NCERT

Vocational Education
Education of group with special needs
Easily childhood Education
Evaluation and examination to reform IT education
Competitive value education
Education of girl child

Improvement in teaching education
Improvement of thought of student.

SCERT (State
Training)

Council

For

Educational

Research

and

SCERT to give a new trust and direction to school education.

SCERT, Kerala was established in 1994. It is an autonomous body
entrusted with planning, Implementation and evaluation of all
academic programmes from pre-school to higher secondary
levels. SCERT concerned with academic aspects of school
education including formation of text books, teachers handbook
and teacher training. Functions are to develop and produce
teaching learning materials, to develop system approaches for
qualitative education, to develop the strategies to achieve the
goals of education for quality, to develop the curriculum and
instructional materials.
SCERT at the state level will carry out all those activities as
counter pack of NCERT for the qualitative improvement of
education in the state. These includes workshop, seminars,
8

training, cluster meeting, refresher course, comprehensive

teacher empowerment programmes researchers, research grants,
awards and scholarship for teachers.

CONCLUSION
From the study it is concluded the curriculum
study groups helps to make education more
efficient and easy. SMP, SMSG,NMP,NCERT and
SCERT agency has interactive role in educational
development. By utilizing the technology we can
achieve the real goals of education. It should also
serve to bring about changes on the academic
environment that actually tends to stick worn-out
practices. A new trend can established only with
the active participation of the civil society, which
would

make

the

curriculum

acceptable.
