RELEASE PICTURE

Mercuric ions (Hg2+) produced through electrochemical corrosion may also be released into saliva,
bind to organic saliva components, and be swallowed.
amalgam particles may be dislodged during mechanical wear of amalgam fillings
ACCUMULATION
A single dental amalgam filling with a surface area of only 0.4 sq.cm is estimated to release as much
as 15 micrograms of mercury per day
By way of contrast, estimates of the daily absorption of all forms of mercury from fish and seafood is
2.3 micrograms and from all other foods, air and water is 0.3 micrograms per day. 13

The Stortebecker Foundation for Research, in Stockholm, Sweden, reports that the high concentrations
of metallic mercury found post-mortem in the brain originate mainly from the mercury in dental
amalgam fillings.
mercurial fumes, which settle in the mucous membranes of the upper region of the nasal cavity and
are then transported directly to the brain. .
1. The inhalation reported to cause damage to the lower parts of the bronchial tree and peripheral
lung tissue.
2. Studies involving human fetuses have revealed that elemental mercury passes the placental barrier
easier than the other forms and can be detected in stillborn babies of mothers treated with injections
of mercury.

EFFECTS - Mercury Toxicity Symptoms

The overt clinical effects resulting from toxic exposure to mercury
The scientific literature shows that amalgam fillings have been associated with a variety of problems
such as
Alzheimer's Disease,
autoimmunity,
kidney dysfunction
infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome
food allergies,
multiple sclerosis,
thyroid problems
Patients with many amalgam fillings will also have an increase in the prevalence of antibiotic
resistant bacteria.
In a smaller group of 85 patients who suffered from symptoms resembling Chronic Fatigue
Syndrome and had their amalgams replaced with composites and metal-free ceramics, "over 78
percent reported improvement in health status as compared to the period prior to metal removal."[34]

Mercury has recently been documented to be associated with arrhythmias and cardiomyopathies as
hair analysis showed mercury levels to be 20,000 higher in those with these cardiac abnormalities.
{{{[Mercury exposure has also been associated with other neurological problems such as
tremors,57 insomnia, polyneuropathy, paresthesias, emotional lability, irritability, personality changes,
headaches, weakness, blurred vision, dysarthria, slowed mental response and unsteady gait.]]]]

multiple sclerosis patients with amalgam fillings,
red blood cells, haemoglobin, hematocrit, thyroxine (T4), T-lymphocytes and T-8 (CD8) suppressors
cells levels are significantly lower,
while blood urea nitrogen and hair mercury levels are significantly higher.

In 2001, the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 31,000 adult
Americans, NHANES III, covering 1988-94, was published by the National Center for Health Statistics
(NCHS). It is statistically valid for all 180,000,000 adult Americans. The survey found that the number
of dental fillings was significantly correlated to incidence of cancer, thyroid conditions, mental
conditions, diseases of the nervous system including MS, diseases of the respiratory and genito-urinary
systems, and disorders of the eye, circulatory and respiratory systems. At the time of the survey
(198894), the vast majority of dental fillings placed were silver amalgam.[37]
INCIDENCE
A 1991-1997 study of 3162 patients in Sweden and Germany found that 719 of those with mercury
fillings, or 23 percent, tested positive for systemic allergic sensitivity to inorganic mercury on
the MELISA lymphocyte proliferation test.[34]
EXPLAIN TO PATIENT
A 2006 Zogby International poll of 2,590 US adults found that 72% of respondents were not
aware that mercury was a main component of dental amalgam and
92% of respondents would prefer to be told about mercury in dental amalgam before
receiving it as a filling
Some dentists (including a member of the FDA's Dental Products Panel) suggest that there
is an obligation to inform patients that amalgam contains mercury.[16][17]
AGAINST AMALGAM REMOVAL
INDIVIDUAL, non-specific

Up until seven years ago, the ADA said no vapor at all was released from fillings. The ADA is
adamant that mercury in a patient's mouth is safe - so adamant that in 1986 - it changed its
code of ethics. It became a violation of that code for any dentist to recommend the
removal of amalgam because of mercury.
Subclinical neuropsychological and motor control effects were also observed in dentists who
had documented high mercury exposure levels. Amalgam use may also be related to fatigue,
poor memory and certain psychological disorders.
an amalgam dust created by a high speed handpiece:

In Sweden, a three-year follow-up study of dental amalgam removal among people claiming
mercuralism found the amalgam removal did not result in any significant effect on general health.
While dental amalgam removal does lead to reduced mercury concentrations in blood and urine,
no differences have been observed in organ function before and after amalgam filling removal.
Even the number of case reports published in scientific journals dealing with individual patients
suffering from various symptoms ascribed to toxic effects of amalgam, and who claimed relief after
removal of the amalgam fillings, is very small. This fact is especially important in view of the many
millions of patients all over the world who have had their teeth restored with amalgam.

FOR AMALGAM REMOVAL

Because its been around so long and because it was assumed that the mercury was made stable when
mixed with other metals, amalgam fillings were never tested for safety
Now a growing number of scientists, doctors and dentists are saying silver amalgams should be
banned.
Another review published in 2005 by the Freiburg University Institute for Environmental
Medicine came to conclusion "removal of dental amalgam leads to permanent improvement
of various chronic complaints in a relevant number of patients in various trials."[4]
INDIVIDUAL CASES
Amalgam tattoos are common oral lesions. The case presented here involved a 33-year-old woman
who had had an amalgam tattoo for 2 years and complained of localized soreness and occasional
swelling as well as systemic symptoms of weight loss, fatigue, sinusitis, and headaches. After

excisional biopsy of the lesion, the patient's complaints ceased dramatically. It is suggested that
alterations in healing due to the presence of amalgam particles led to systemic as well as local
disease.
Currently, Germany, Sweden and Denmark severely restrict the use of amalgams.
