Foreword

It is hard to defend Rahu, who is heretic, irreligious, and perverted. To an extent, even Sani
and Ketu can be explained away, the former because he is the Vairagya Karaka, and the latter
because he is the Moksha Karaka.

But Rahu just doesn’t fit in. One could seek refuge under the dictum “Sani Vad Rahu” and
say that Rahu too is capable of giving detachment like Sani, but more often than not, one is
forced to stretch the point.

The only reason why I’m tempted to play Rahu’s Advocate is because I’m personally a very
religious person, albeit a trifle non-orthodox. I have more than a little respect for Rahu
because it was in one of Rahu’s Antar Dasas that I suffered from an accident, which led me
towards God. This happened in 1997, and today, I feel, the time has come to repay my debt.

I have decided to portray this as a Divine Drama in the Court of God. For one, this gives me
the ability consider Rahu’s role, to the exclusion of everything else, because, after all, I
represent Rahu and no other graha. Also, this makes the subject just a trifle more interesting.

I have taken the charts of 14 spiritual people from Shri BV Raman’s book “Notable
Horoscopes.” Shri BV Raman has done an excellent and comprehensive analysis in his book,
and I don’t think that there is anything more that my own feeble intellect can add to his
outstanding analysis. So, I have borrowed only the charts from Shri BV Raman’s book, and if
you find errors, you know that you have to attribute them solely to me.

In a court of law, you are deemed innocent until proven guilty and the accused is always
given the benefit of doubt. I therefore urge you, gentle reader, to treat Rahu in a similar vein.
Yes, he is full of inauspicious attributes, but perhaps we have judged even him a trifle more
harshly than he deserves.

And finally, this document doesn’t seek to show that black is white by claiming that Rahu is a
good graha. He most definitely is not. However, the point here is that, if a chart is oriented
towards spirituality, then Rahu doesn’t intrude with his vulgar hedonism. On the contrary, he
is perhaps also capable of providing the impetus required to seek God. Also, since Sani attains
Ucchatva in Rahu’s Nakshatra Swati, we need to suspend our disbelief and remember that
Vairagya Karaka Sani most certainly has his reasons for choosing the Nakshatra of a
materialistic graha as his point of highest rise. So, let us explore the various charts of Men of
God in the following pages, and see if Rahu is really as bad as he is made out to be!

To cut a long story short, this is what happened…

In the Court of God

Surya and Chandra stood before God in His Court and said:

Lord, we wish to bring to Your kind notice the unscrupulous activities of the likes of Sani,
Rahu, and Ketu. They have spread pandemonium on Your kingdom. Those whom they affect
can be said to be severely afflicted, and spend the reminder of their lives in sorrow and
misery.

Sani and Ketu rose to defend themselves. Sani sought refuge in the fact that he helped people
renounce the world by being the Vairagya Karaka. Ketu said that he was the Moksha Karaka,
and helped people to attain salvation.

Of course, this left Rahu alone in the dock.

But God, who is benevolent, just and ever merciful, felt that even Rahu deserved a full
hearing. Also, He was not exactly prone to trust Surya and Chandra, who represent the ego
and the fickleness of the mind respectively.

Therefore, He appointed one of His devotees to defend Rahu in His court. This person, who is
known only as Rahu’s Advocate, bowed before the Lord and decided to fulfill His command
of defending Rahu.

Rahu’s Advocate, bowing before the Lord, said:

My Lord, I shall carry out Your wishes to the best of my abilities. However, I shall need some
tools from You. What can You provide me with, so that I can carry out Your commands
properly?

And God Said:

Hear me, Rahu’s Advocate! You know that Rahu and Ketu were created when they were torn
asunder by My Sudarshana Chakra. I therefore command you to use the Sudarshana Chakra
that has been expounded by Rishi Parashara in the Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra. Using this
Sudarshana Chakra, consider matters from Lagna, Chandra Lagna and Surya Lagna. This is
only fitting, considering that it is Surya and Chandra who have complained to Me about
Rahu!

Rahu’s Advocate bowed before the Lord and departed from His court.

After doing some studies, he again returned to His court to present his findings. Standing
before God, Rahu’s Advocate prepared himself to defend his client.

Swakshetra/Moolatrikona is denoted by turquoise, Uccha by green, and Neecha by red.

NOTE: Rahu and Ketu, being Chaya Grahas, are not deemed to be either Uccha or Neecha.
However, they behave like their dispositors, and so if they are Uccha or Neecha, then Rahu
and Ketu can be deemed to be Uccha or Neecha respectively.

For example, in Chart 1, Rahu is in Chandra’s Rasi and Kuja’s Navamsa. Since Chandra is
Uccha in Rasi, Rahu too can be deemed likewise. Similarly, since Kuja is Neecha in
Navamsa, Rahu is considered to be Neecha in Navamsa. So, in effect, in the above chart,
Rahu and Ketu acquire the “colors” of their dispositors.

5
My Lord, said Rahu’s Advocate, I shall now present you with the chart of…

01 Krishna

Rahu is in the 4th pada of Pushya, which falls in the Navamsa of Kuja and the drekkan of
Kuja.

Since Chandra and Lagna share the same house—indeed, the same Navamsa too—the same
results are applicable to both Lagna and Chandra Lagna. Rahu’s dispositor is Uccha, and this
is a positive aspect of the chart. As per “Sani Vad Rahu,” it is heartening to note that Sani is a
Raja Yoga Karaka from both Chandra and Lagna.

From Surya Lagna, Rahu is in the 12th, conjunct the 9th lord, Neecha Vargotamma Kuja.

Let us now consider Rahu’s Nakshatra Dispositor, Sani. Sani, as the Raja Yoga Karaka,
aspects Lagna, Chandra, and Surya. He is also Vargotamma, which enhances his auspicious
attributes considerably. From Surya Lagna, this is not so auspicious because Sani is the lord
of the 6th and the 7th. However, from Surya Lagna, Sani himself is disposited by Raja Yoga
Karaka Kuja.

6
My Lord, said Rahu’s Advocate, I shall now present you with the chart of…

02 Buddha

In this chart, Rahu is Vargotamma because he occupies the 3rd Pada of Punarvasu. He falls in
the Navamsa of Budha and the Drekkan of Sani. His dispositor is strengthened in Navamsa by
being conjunct Navamsa Lagnadipati Guru.

Rahu is aspected powerfully by Sani, who occupies the 8th Navamsa of Mesha, and this
strengthens the dictum “Sani Vad Rahu.” Note that, while Sani is Neecha, he gets Neecha
Bhanga because he is with Uccha Surya.

From Lagna, Rahu occupies Moksha Stana, aspected by Vairagya Karaka Sani. From
Chandra Lagna, Rahu is in the benefic 9th, aspected by Raja Yoga Karaka Sani. From Surya
Lagna, things don’t seem so auspicious because Rahu is in the 3rd, and will behave like 3rd and
6th lord Budha. However, Surya is the lord of the 5th from Surya Lagna, and is closely
conjunct Surya Lagnadipati Kuja, who occupies the same Navamsa. Additionally, Guru, the
lord of the 9th from Surya, is also capable of influencing Rahu because he is also conjunct
Surya.

Rahu’s Nakshatra Dispositor Guru rules the 6th and the 9th from Lagna. From Chandra he is
not so good because he is the ruler of the 3rd and the 6th, but from Surya Lagna, he again
regains auspiciousness by ruling the 9th and the 12th, which are so intimately connected with
religion.

7
My Lord, said Rahu’s Advocate, I shall now present you with the chart of…

03 Shankaracharya

In this chart, Rahu is in the 1st pada of Rohini, and his dispositor Sukra is Vargotamma. Rahu
falls in the Navamsa of Kuja and the Drekkan of Budha.

From Lagna, Rahu is in the 11th, while from Surya Lagna Rahu is in the 2nd, and these don’t
seem to be connected directly with religion. The only saving grace seems to be the fact that,
from Chandra Lagna, Rahu is in the 12th, and Sani, whom Rahu emulates, is the lord of the
9th.

It is here that a careful consideration of Rahu’s Nakshatra dispositor proves useful. From
Lagna, Chandra is aspected by 9th lord Guru and Raja Yoga Karaka Kuja. From Surya Lagna,
Guru, who is again 9th lord, and the Surya Lagnadipati Kuja aspect Chandra, thus indirectly
affecting Rahu. “Sani Vad Rahu” is strengthened because Sani aspects Guru, who affects
Rahu’s Nakshatra Dispositor Chandra, besides also aspecting Chandra.

8
My Lord, said Rahu’s Advocate, I shall now present you with the chart of…

04 Jesus Christ

In this chart, Rahu falls in the 4th pada of Vishaka, and occupies the Navamsa of Chandra and
the Drekkan of Kuja. His dispositor Kuja is Vargotamma.

From Lagna, Rahu is in the 3rd, conjunct 9th lord Sukra, and aspected by Guru. While Guru is
not very auspicious for Kanya Lagna, suffering as he does from Kendradipati Dosha, Guru is
heavily influenced by Sani, who rules the 5th, and occupies the same Navamsa.

From Chandra Lagna, Rahu is in the 9th aspected by Lagnadipati Guru, and the 12th lord Sani.
From Surya, Rahu occupies the 12th and is disposited by the 5th lord and aspected by Surya
Lagnadipati Guru.

Guru, who is Rahu’s Nakshatra Dispositor, is beneficial from both Chandra Lagna and Surya
Lagna. From Lagna alone he is malefic, but this is overcome because of the Hamsa Yoga that
he participates in, and the close influence of Sani.

9
My Lord, said Rahu’s Advocate, I shall now present you with the chart of…

05 Prophet Mahamud

Rahu falls in the 3rd pada of Kritika, which concerns the Navamsa of Sani and the Drekkan of
Sukra. He is also aspected by Sani, and this strengthens the dictum “Sani Vad Rahu.” His
dispositor is very strong because he is in own house in Rasi and Uccha in Navamsa.

From Lagna, Rahu is in the 4th conjunct 9th and 4th lord Sukra, and aspected by Sani, lord of
the 1st and the 12th. From Chandra Lagna, things are not so auspicious because Rahu is in the
10th, but Chandra Lagnadipati Surya is Uccha and occupies the Navamsa of Guru, while
Chandra himself is Vargotamma. Rahu also occupies Surya’s Nakshatra, and since his
Nakshatra dispositor is Uccha in the 9th from Chandra Lagna, this too is indicative of divinity.

From Surya Lagna, Rahu will behave like the 2nd and 7th lord Sukra and like 10th and 11th lord
Sani, which seems puzzling. However, his Nakshatra Dispositor is the lord of the 5th from
Surya Lagna. Rahu’s capacity for mischief is further reduced because Guru, who occupies the
9th Navamsa of Tula, powerfully aspects Rahu’s Nakshatra dispositor Surya, who occupies the
9th Navamsa of Mesha.

10
My Lord, said Rahu’s Advocate, I shall now present you with the chart of…

06 Ramanujacharya

Rahu falls in the 2nd pada of Rohini and occupies the Navamsa of Sukra and the Drekkan of
Budha in this chart. Rahu gains auspiciousness by being Vargotamma. Rahu is also subject to
Subha Katari Yoga by Sukra and Budha on one side and Guru and Chandra on the other.

While Rahu occupies the 11th from Lagna, which is not exactly concerned directly with
religion, we must note that his Nakshatra Dispositor is in the 12th, conjunct 9th lord Guru.
From Chandra Lagna, he is in the 12th house and “Sani Vad Rahu” is especially relevant here
because Sani owns the 9th house.

From Surya Lagna, Rahu is in the 2nd, but Rahu’s Nakshatra Dispositor Chandra is conjunct
Guru, the lord of the 9th and the 12th.

11
My Lord, said Rahu’s Advocate, I shall now present you with the chart of…

07 Guru Nanak

In this chart, Rahu falls in the 4th pada of Poorvashada, and occupies the Navamsa of Kuja
and the Drekkan of Surya. Rahu’s Nakshatra Dispositor Sukra is subject to Subha Katari
Yoga by Budha and Guru.

From Lagna, Rahu falls in the 5th, while his dispositor is in the 2nd. Guru also aspects Sani,
and so the impact on Rahu, both directly and indirectly is divine. Note also that Rahu’s
nakshatra dispositor owns the 10th, which also contains the lord of the 12th.

From Chandra, Rahu falls in the malefic 8th, but his dispositor is in the 5th, and additionally,
since Sani is the Raja Yoga Karaka from Chandra Lagna, Rahu’s capacity for divinity gets
enhanced. Furthermore, Chandra Lagnadipati is Sukra, who also rules the nakshatra in which
Rahu is placed.

From Surya, Rahu’s Nakshatra Dispositor becomes the lord of the 12th in the 12th. Surya
Lagnadipati is in the Surya Lagna, and the lord of the 9th from Surya Lagna, namely Chandra,
is closely conjunct Vairagya Karaka Sani and also occupies the same Navamsa. Rahu’s
dispositor in this case is the lord of the benefic 5th. Sani, like whom Rahu behaves, is heavily
influenced by the lords of the 1st, the 5th, and the 9th from Surya Lagna, and this too ensures
excellent behavior from Rahu.

12
My Lord, said Rahu’s Advocate, I shall now present you with the chart of…

08 Chaitanya

Rahu occupies the 3rd Pada of Poorvabhadrapada and falls in the Navamsa of Mituna and the
Drekkan of Sukra. He is closely conjunct Surya, who is just one Navamsa away.

Note that, while Rahu is not aspected by any graha other than Chandra, he is indirectly
influenced by Guru, Sani, and Kuja, who all aspect Chandra.

From Lagna, Rahu falls in the benefic 5th, and is aspected by 10th lord Chandra. Sukra, the
Lagnadipati and lord of the Drekkan in which Rahu falls, is aspected by Kuja and Guru, while
the former is aspected by Sani.

From Chandra Lagna, Rahu’s Nakshatra dispositor is the lord of the 5th in the 5th house, while
Rahu himself is conjunct Chandra Lagnadipati and aspected by the lord of the 12th from
Chandra Lagna. Rahu’s Drekkanadipati also occupies the 9th, and is aspected by the lord of
the 9th.

From Surya, Rahu is in the Surya Lagna, and Rahu’s dispositor is also the lord of the 12th and
occupies the Karmastana, while the lord of the 10th is Uccha in the 12th. Rahu’s Nakshatra
Dispositor Guru falls in the Navamsa of Sukra, who is the lord of the 9th from Surya Lagna.
All these factors are capable of boosting Rahu’s spiritual quotient.

13
My Lord, said Rahu’s Advocate, I shall now present you with the chart of…

09 Ramakrishna

Rahu falls in the 3rd Pada of Jeyshta, and occupies the Navamsa of Sani and the Drekkan of
Chandra.

In this chart, Surya, Chandra and Lagna are all in the same house, and so the same results are
obtainable from all the three Lagnas. Rahu’s Nakshatra dispositor, who rules the 5th, is in the
Lagna, and attains strength by being Vargotamma.

Rahu falls in the10th, and since his dispositor is Uccha in the 12th, it is definitely a good sign.
Additionally, the Lagna and the Lagnadipati receive the aspects of Guru. While Guru is not a
great benefic for Kumba Lagna, his aspects are always welcome, and since he occupies the 5th
Navamsa of Mituna, his aspect on Sani is extremely powerful because the latter occupies the
5th Navamsa of Tula.

Sani, who is Uccha, is further strengthened because his dispositor is also Uccha. The
Ucchatva of three grahas—including Rahu’s dispositor, Sani, and the dispositor of Sani—
have ensured that Rahu makes important contributions to the native’s spiritual quest. Added
to this, the involvement of the 5th (Rahu’s Nakshatra Dispositor), the 9th (placement of Sani)
and the 12th (Rahu’s Dispositor) also play a central role.

14
My Lord, said Rahu’s Advocate, I shall now present you with the chart of…

10 Narasimha Bharathi

In this chart, Rahu occupies the 3rd Pada of Poorvabhadrapada and falls in the Navamsa of
Budha and the Drekkan of Sukra.

Rahu is aspected by Kuja, but it is also interesting to note that Rahu’s Nakshatra Dispositor is
aspected by Sani, who is Rahu’s dispositor. Of course, neither aspect is exact—Vargotamma
Sani occupies the 1st Navamsa of Kataka, while Guru occupies the 7th Navamsa of Mesha, and
Kuja occupies the 3rd Navamsa of Vrichica, while Rahu is placed in the 9th Navamsa of
Kumbha.

From Lagna, Rahu is in the 5th, conjunct 9th and 12th lord Budha, and his dispositor is in the
10th house. Kuja and Guru do not make any spiritual contributions in this context.

The Chandra Lagna is aspected by Chandra Lagnadipati, and Rahu is in the 2nd, disposited by
Lagnadipati. Rahu’s Nakshatra Dispositor owns the 12th and is aspected by Rahu’s dispositor,
while Rahu is conjunct 9th lord. It is also of note that Rahu’s Drekkanadipati is Uccha.

Rahu’s Nakshatra Dispositor is also the Surya Lagnadipati, and from here Rahu is in the 12th
house, aspected by the 9th lord. The lord of the 5th is aspecting Rahu’s dispositor, with whom
he forms Parivartana Yoga.

15
My Lord, said Rahu’s Advocate, I shall now present you with the chart of…

11 Vivekananda

In this chart, Rahu is in the 3rd Pada of Jeyshta and falls in the Navamsa of Sani and the
Drekkan of Chandra. Rahu is aspected by Kuja and Sani, but these aspects are not exact
because Kuja occupies the 3rd Navamsa of Mesha, Sani falls in the 5th Navamsa of Kanya, and
Rahu is placed in the 8th Navamsa of Vrichaka.

From Lagna, Rahu falls in the 12th house and is disposited and aspected by the lord of the 5th.
Rahu’s Nakshatra Dispositor is conjunct 9th lord, enhancing his capacity for divinity.

From Chandra Lagna, Rahu’s Nakshatra Dispositor becomes the Lagnadipati, and the 5th lord
aspects Rahu. The aspect of the 3rd and 8th lord on Rahu is not exactly beneficial, but Kuja is
also aspected by Guru, the natural karaka for religion, and this reduces the sting considerably.

From Surya Lagna, the 9th is occupied by Lagnadipati Sani and Rahu’s Drekkanadipati
Chandra. Rahu’s dispositor is aspected by 12th lord Guru. Rahu’s Nakshatra Dispositor Budha
is also conjunct Sukra, who rules the benefic 5th and is Uccha in Navamsa.

16
My Lord, said Rahu’s Advocate, I shall now present you with the chart of…

12 Pope Pius XII

In this chart, Rahu occupies the 2nd Pada of Uttarabhadrapada and falls in the Navamsa of
Budha and the Drekkan of Guru. Here, Rahu and Sani are in 2/12 positions, but Sani aspects
Rahu’s Dispositor Guru, who, in turn aspects Rahu, and so an indirect relationship is
obtainable. Additionally, we also have to consider “Sani Vad Rahu” and the fact that Sani is
Rahu’s Nakshatra Dispositor.

From Lagna, Rahu is in the 5th aspected by the lord of the 5th. He is also conjunct Uccha
Vargotamma Sukra, who rules the 12th house. However, this conjunction is not exact. The
lord of the 9th is Uccha, and though this graha doesn’t aspect Rahu directly, a relationship is
achieved because Chandra aspects Guru and therefore indirectly impacts Rahu.

From Chandra Lagna, Sani forms Sasa Yoga and this can have important ramifications
because of the relationship that Sani has with Rahu. Rahu in this case is conjunct Uccha
Vargotamma Lagnadipati and falls in the Navamsa of the 5th lord. The 12th lord is in his own
house, aspected by Sani, the lord of the 9th.

From Surya Lagna, the Lagnadipati is in the 1st house and Rahu is conjunct Uccha
Vargotamma 9th lord. The lord of the Navamsa in which Rahu falls occupies the 12th house as
the lord of the 5th.

17
My Lord, said Rahu’s Advocate, I shall now present you with the chart of…

13 Ramana Maharshi

In this chart, Rahu falls in the 3rd Pada of Poorvashada, which concerns the Navamsa of Kuja
and the Drekkan of Surya. Rahu is conjunct Drekkanadipati Surya and receives the aspect of
Sani and Vargotamma Chandra.

From Lagna, Rahu shows spiritual promise because it is in the nakshatra of Lagnadipati
Sukra, and is aspected by 5th lord Sani. His dispositor, a planet of religion, is himself
disposited by the lord of the 5th.

From Chandra Lagna, Rahu falls in the nakshatra of the 5th and 12th lord Sukra. His dispositor
is involved in Parivartana Yoga with the lord of the 9th, while the 9th lord aspects Rahu.

From Surya Lagna, Rahu occupies Lagna. His presence in the nakshatra of 6th and 11th lord is
not desirable. Again, aspects of the 8th lord Chandra and 2nd and 3rd lord Sani are not desirable
in this context, but Rahu is conjunct 9th lord Surya. The 5th and 12th lord is well placed in Rasi,
and is conjunct Rahu in the Navamsa.

18
My Lord, said Rahu’s Advocate, I shall now present you with the chart of…

14 Swami Sivananda

In this chart, Rahu occupies the 3rd Pada of Aslesha and falls in the Navamsa of Kumba and
the Drekkan of Guru.

From Lagna, Rahu is conjunct Kuja, the lord of the 5th. While Kuja is Neecha, he attains
Neecha Bhanga because Guru, who would be Uccha in his place, is in a Kendra from both
Lagna and Chandra. Rahu also occupies the nakshatra of 12th lord Budha.

From Chandra Lagna, Rahu is conjunct Lagnadipati in the 4th house conjunct Chandra
Lagnadipati. Rahu’s dispositor receives the aspect of 9th and 12th lord Guru, thus indirectly
propelling Rahu towards divinity.

From Surya Lagna, Rahu falls in the 12th, and his dispositor, the 12th lord, receives the aspect
of 5th lord Guru. Rahu is also conjunct 9th lord Kuja. Surya Lagnadipati influences Rahu’s
Nakshatra Dispositor Budha, and this too has an indirect influence on Rahu.

19
My Lord, said Rahu’s Advocate, I shall now conclude with some…

Closing Thoughts

Rahu’s Advocate continued:

The purpose of my little exercise, my Lord, is to indicate that Rahu, while not exactly a role
model worthy of emulation, is not as bad as he is generally assumed to be.

All I have to say, my Lord, is that Rahu, like everything else in the Known Universe, carries
with him a spark of divinity because he too has come from You.

Maharishi Parasar’s words from the BPHS echo this thought in Chapter 2 (Great
Incarnations), Verses 3-4, where he says:

“The unborn Lord has many incarnations. He has incarnated, as the 9 (Nava) Grahas to
bestow on the living beings the results due to their Karmas.”

So, Rahu, as a part of the Nava Grahas, is as much a part of You, My Lord, as anything else,
and therefore, can't be all that bad!

Also, my Lord, while Guru is held in esteem to be the planet of divinity, it is actually Sani, as
the Vairagya Karaka, who leads people to You. In the 14 charts that I have presented to You,
my Lord, you will observe that Sani is associated with Chandra as under:

Association Present in the charts of

Sani conjunct Chandra Jesus Christ, Guru Nanak, Vivekananda
Sani aspects Chandra [Rasi] Krishna, Buddha, Shankaracharya, Prophet Mahamud,
Ramanujacharya, Chaitanya, Narasimha Bharathi,
Swami Sivananda
Sani aspects Chandra [Navamsa] Ramana Maharshi
Sani disposits Chandra [Rasi] Ramakrishna
Sani disposits Chandra [Navamsa] Pope Pius XII

Since Rahu is like Sani, is he also not capable of emulating Sani in this regard, at least to a
certain extent? All I seek from You, my Lord, is the benefit of doubt for my client.

Let me thank you again, my Lord, for suggesting Parashara's Sudarshana Chakra to me. With
it, I have tried to tear asunder the untenable averments of Surya and Chandra, just as You,
with Your Sudarshana Chakra, tore apart Simhika's son to create Rahu and Ketu.

Talking about Simhika, my Lord, it hardly needs mention that she is the sister of
Hiranyakashipu, which makes Rahu and Your great devotee Prahalada cousins. Is this why,
my Lord, you incarnated as Narasimha on Swati, a nakshatra owned by Rahu?

I beseech you to withhold Your judgment, my Lord. Let the Jyotishes who are called
“Daivagnas,” or people who knows the mind of God, decipher for themselves what Rahu is
really like based upon my humble studies.

My Lord, said Rahu’s Advocate, I now rest my case.
