SMILE experiment products continue
to provide a sense of wonder even
after they go home. We use lab
notebooks to record notes, sketches,

their knowledge at home using their

Science & Math Interactive Learning Experience

Enriching and Inspiring Academic and Intellectual Students

2015-2016
What is SMILE?
An unequaled S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Mathematics) experience where the emphasis
is on hands-on experience. Campers actively learn and create in a collaborative, highly interactive laboratory
environment mentored by college students and classroom teachers.

Science:

We use Materials Science experiments and analytical equipment as the medium to explore the underlying principles
of science, engineering, design, physics, and chemistry.

Math:

Students become familiar with numbers, structures, equations, and develop a sense of scale as we explore advanced
materials phenomena from the Mega scale down to the Micro and Nano.

Interactive:

Small groups of 3 4 campers per mentor create a safe and highly interactive environment. The campers carry
out the experiments, drive the electron microscopes, and operate the analytical equipment while interacting with mentors,
engineers, scientists and fellow campers.

Learning:

Campers learn by doing. They perform experiments not available in a regular school setting. The goal is to expose
these students to what happens beyond the classroom, encouraging them not only to have greater interest in the curriculum
that they receive at school but also to go above and beyond. With fun, hands-on experiments, we open up each campers
mind to exciting real-world applications of science, math, technology and engineering that they do not see elsewhere.

Experiences:

We do really cool stuff! These are experiments that normally only college students would have access to. In
addition, the campers have an opportunity to meet, interact, and develop friendships with students and mentors like
themselves. Campers will be creating, designing, building, growing, and bringing home what they create.
