How you get your job, how you achieve in school, how people treat you
or how you make your self doesnt only influenced by your wealth, power,
credentials or ethnic origin but also by what kind of gender you have. As we
are born, a status is already given to us and this status comes with
responsibilities and tasks to fulfill. This shows that the moment we breathe
people already expect something on us. Being a female, we are expected to
be a good follower, soft-hearted, lovely, conservative and graceful. While
boys are expected be tough, string, leader, decision-maker, provider and
defender. And this is just so unfair that girls are seen as weaker than the
boys. In my opinion, it shouldnt be the type of gender that defines the kind
of life one should have but it should be the individuals own effort and
strategies on how he/she will make his/her life worth living.
There are some factors that contributed to the way people look girls
and boys in an unequal way. First is the family. We have been talking over
and over again that the family is the immediate environment of the child,
thus, it greatly affect and influence the understanding of a child. In the eyes
of every children whatever their parents do, might it be good or bad, is
always right. They set as role model to them, so for example, if the parents
shows that being a mother means serving and supporting his husband and
following his orders, then the child will more likely think that females are
followers of males. Same also with mass media, since it displays the different
roles of man and female in the society, the females might develop a low selfconfidence since they witnessed that girls are always violated, manipulated
and fooled by men and the males on the other hand might become over
confident and proud of themselves that they forget the worth of a woman.
Third is the workplace, it is where the individual will know the kind of job or
position available for girls and boys. Such that schools, welfare services and
hospitals are manipulated by girls, while military, policing and transport
services for boys. So female tend to expect a simple, domestic and emotion
related jobs while a strenuous physical activity related jobs for males. Fourth
is the most influential group, their peers especially in their adolescent life
since they value them much more in this stage. It is the time when they
learn each gender roles where girls are influenced and always expected to
act like a lady with pleasing personality and appearance and also less
independent than boys who are seen as risk-takers and brave. And most of
all, the school, which in reality perpetuates the existing inequality between
males and females. This is reflected in the books where women are all the
time the wretched and the men are their knight in shining armor or even in
some classroom situation where boys are ask to carry the chairs and girls are
to clean the room or write on board. Teacher expectancy is also one factor
because students look up and fulfill what their teacher think of them.
The school reinforces and continues the stereotyping of roles that is
started at home but it should also serve as a way to diminish or eliminate
this inequality. The school is the medium of education and education is not
only towards the acquisition of knowledge or enrichment of every individuals
innate skills but also to the understanding of the difference between
individuals. This is where social dimension of education emerges to let every
student know their differences and uniqueness from other and embrace this
diversity for a harmonious relationship. Gender equality is included in this
education since there is an issue about what a woman or man can do.
Gender equality means equality of entitlement, opportunities, experience
and outcomes in education for both men and women. It is important because
it promotes that women are capable of doing the things that men can do.
Also it fights gender stratification, gender stereotyping and sexism which set
as a barrier to understand that abilities and skills do not go with gender. This
is supported by the feminist theory which is a social movement that centers
on assuring equality between men and women particularly uplifting the
rights of women since the societys social structure and organizations
oppressed and discriminates them.
In my opinion, the teaching of equality between men and women
should not stop in the teacher discussing topics about it but it should be also
visible inside the school setting. The teachers are very important in resolving
this issue, they serve as the bridge between girls and boys in communicating
their thoughts and opinions. They should showcase together with the school
personnel the fair share opportunities for both girl and boy, male or female.
In their hands lies the harmony of the society in the future since they are the
agents of change, they transmit knowledge and this knowledge should
contain understanding about equality.
The following questions were made after reading the content of this
chapter. Does educations curriculum and content responds to the needs of
both girls and boys? Does it favors one type of gender? What are the
programs the DepEd has made to minimize or eliminate gender inequality?
