About Darjeeling
Darjeeling is a popular hill station in the state of West Bengal. At an average elevation of 2050
meters, it is located in the Lesser Himalayan range and provides beautiful views of the mighty
Himalayas, especially Kanchenjunga the worlds third highest mountain peak. Known for its
scenic beauty, snow-clad Himalayas, and tea gardens, Darjeeling is frequented by tourists from

History of Darjeeling
The history of modern Darjeeling dates back to the 19th century. Till then, the town was under
the reign of the kings of the kingdom of Sikkim. During the British Raj, Darjeeling was a
favoured destination due to its cool and temperate climate. It soon became popular among the
British, who later, established schools and built buildings in the region. It became the summer
capital of the Bengal Presidency in 1864. Tea was introduced in Darjeeling in 1856 and due to

"Darjeeling, also known as the Queen of Hills, hold the name true in every sense. Visit this
place during Spring, the blooming season. From honeymooners to those with an adventurers
heart, there is a surprise stored for everyone in Darjeeling.
The beauty of watching the sun go down, painting the majestic Kanchenjunga in orange hues is

NEVER SAY DIE FOR DARJEELING

"every bengali visits darjeeling atleast thrice in life1)in school days along with parents during
summer vacation2)with wife for honeymoon3)along with wife & children.last november when i
reached darjeeling ,this was actually my 5th visit this time,with my wife & child& in a time when
bengalis have found new love in gangtok rejecting old darling darjeeling for fear of disturbance
.after staying 4 nights in darjeeling,i felt,the hill queen is also feeling lonely,weeping silently for
lack of tourists but the spirit of darjeeling is grossly intact.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: i took joy ride in toy train from darjeeling to ghum.it looked like
mini world.tourists from london,paris,japan,mumbai,gujrat.....all were waiting to have a
memorable journey in heritage train.when we reached BATASIA LOOP ,the train against the
background of snow white kanchanjunga looked like a true himalayan queen.
THE MALL is as beautiful as ever....i was overjoyed to have a cup of nice tea with typical
darjeeling flavor at only rs 5.The back side of mall where the old lady sang rabindrasangeet in
satyajit rays movie KANCHANJANGHA is now lovers paradise.i also felt nostalgic & my 2 yr old
son was silently watching hills to give us some space.

Next morning when i reached TIGER HILL at 5 o clock morning i remembered poor
RABINDRANATH TAGORE who failed to see sunrise at tiger hill in his all 7 visits due to cloud
but i was lucky again to enjoy a breath taking sun rise.the foreign tourists were awe struck.i
found one gujrati couple to utter MANTRA while observing the color changes on
kanchanjunga.darjeeling is place for RED PANDA ....my son was excited to see the activities of
red panda in zoo...adjacent to mountaineering institute.

Tinchuley and Baramangwa

"The beautiful Tinchuley village is 30 km away from Darjeeling. We drove down to Tinchuley in
two hours through magnificent mountainous countryside. Location was selected away from the
main road to avoid too many flocking and destroying its ambiance. A few families with bigger
accommodation were convinced to spare a few rooms and convert these to lodges with
expertise from Help Tourism once permission from WBFDC was obtained.
We were at Bara Mangwa in the Teesta Valley of Darjeeling Hills. It is a village where only
profession was agriculture even a couple of years back. Bara Mangwa was used for rafting on
the Teesta only. Local school buildings were used for putting up people coming for day time
rafting. But it had future as a home-stay tourist destination as the village had prospect for
creating rock climbing facilities, caving in near by caves and bird watching. Nature is bountiful
here. Hills are covered with green pine and oak trees. The gurgling Teesta runs through a
narrow gorge. Rainfall in upper reaches creates waterfalls when it rains. When we neared Bara
Mangwa, we saw three such rainfalls coming down the slopes.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Best of such places is that the guest need not follow a
routine. We could wake up when we felt like. I saw guests walking off into the pine and oak
forest with lunch hampers for a picnic. Every place is a picnic spot. I took a path into the forest. I
crossed the village monastery and a small burial place where guesthouse owners dead are
buried. I found nameless wild flowers. I saw sparrows, warblers, thrushes and cuckoos. I saw an
eagle sitting on a tree.
Piyush, Sapna and little Krish joined me in my walk carrying a hamper for lunch and a two liter
bottle of mineral water. Over the year, I have found Himalayan natural water safe for me. There

were seasonal waterfalls and rains two day earlier had send down enough water to make those
falls beautiful. When we reached a watch tower the glorious views of the Mt. Kanchenjunga and
its ranges greeted us. The jungle was alive with minivets, Flycatchers, Mynas, Orioles,
Parakeets, Swifts and Woodpeckers
Activities & things to do: Next day I went for a walk into the Teesta gorge while Piyush went for
rock climbing. Sapna took a boy guide into the nursery to see blooming flowers and medicinal
plants. While descending along the road, I stopped at a tea shop for tea. The shop owner and
his wife were at the counter selling some fried eatables, too. While talking he told some income
was coming into family kitty as his two sons were working in tourism connected work. I was
happy that efforts were bearing fruits.
As I touched the bottom of the gorge and looked up, I was engulfed by the Himalayas on all side
and in front was the green Teesta amid forest. I saw two rafts struggling with rapids and rafters
shouting in thrill. After spending an hour at the bottom, I ascended on the road and went to rock
climbing area where I was greeted by huffing and puffing Piyush. He was thrilled after rock
climbing and all praise for Indian instructors. He did not know that Nepali boys were born
climbers and no climbing school in USA can teach them.
We walked back to the nursery and began preparing for our villages in Sikkim. Siliguri was only
55 km away and we would be able to make into Gangtok before dusk.

products.
Activities & things to do: Darjeeling is esentially a teas producing Centre. There are various

Since the entire economy of Darjeeling is dependant on Tea goods and tourists, proper steps to
be taken to ensure good transportation systems.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: One has to first reach Siliguri(New Jalpaiguri) to
visit Darjeeling. About 10 kms from Siliguri is the Bhagdhogra airport and also connected with
major airports of the country.
From SIligury the journey to Darjeeling can be either by road or rail. If travelling by bus the travel
is about 80 kms and takes about 3 hours. You can engage a smaller private vehicle which takes
a shorter route and the distance is reduced by about 15 kms.
The toy train journey can be taken if you ae not in a hurry as it takes about 8 hours. All through

A picturesque hill station in the state of West Bengal, Darjeeling experiences five distinct
seasons: summer which prevails from April to June, monsoons from July to August, autumn
from September to November, winter from December to January, and spring from February to
March. The average annual maximum temperature is 14.9 Celsius, while the average
minimum temperature is 8.9 Celsius.
The summer in Darjeeling is quite comfortable with the temperature never crossing 25 Celsius.
The mild weather attracts a lot of tourists to Darjeeling who throng the town to escape the
summer heat.
The short monsoon that Darjeeling experiences is characterized by intense downpour which
often leads to landslides and road blocks. The average annual rainfall here is about 3092 mm.
Autumn in Darjeeling is quite beautiful, though it is marked by the occasional showers.
Darjeeling experiences cold winters with the average temperature remaining within 5 Celsius to
7 Celsius, and an average minimum temperature of -2 Celsius. Snowfall is rare nowadays, but
there it does get the occasional winter showers which further dips the temperature and also
causes landslides.

Springtime in Darjeeling is beautiful with greenery and flowers all around. During this time the
temperature remains between 10 Celsius to 20 Celsius and the weather is ideal for exploring
the town.
The best season to visit Darjeeling is between March to May, and September to November.
During this time, the weather remains pleasant with clear blue skies and bright days. Tourists
can enjoy roaming around the scenic hill-station and can also catch a glimpse of the breathtaking view of the sunrise on the Kanchenjunga from the Tiger Hill.
