Program Description:
The DVA MENTOR Program provides traditional one-to-one mentoring between a Developing Virtue
Secondary (DVS) student and a Development Virtue Alumni (DVA) member. The mentoring model focuses on
character, social, and leadership development, as well as high school to college/career support and academic
success. The mentoring relationship would last a minimum of 2 years, typically beginning in the Mentee’s
senior year in high school and continuing through their 1st year after high school.
The DVA MENTOR Program is administered by DVA’s School Outreach Programs (SOP) Committee,
which trains Mentors and pairs Mentors with Mentees according to gender and based shared interests and
common life goals. The SOP Committee serves as a liaison to Developing Virtue Secondary (DVS) Schools,
who shares in the program’s involvement to ensure its long-term success.
Purpose:
• Focus on the students’ needs, serving as a steady presence in the students’ life and providing an
additional outlet for emotional, social, and academic support
• Help develop students’ self-esteem and confidence
• Help develop students’ sense of personal accountability and social responsibility
Mentor Eligibility:
• Mentors must be a DVS graduate or former student. Exceptions are approved by the SOP Committee.
• Mentors must have completed at least 2 years in college before applying (preferably, they are )
• Mentors must not be on the existing faculty or staff of DVS for Mentees still enrolled at DVS
How It Works:
1. Students who want to be paired up with a Mentor sign up by filling out a DVA Mentee Profile
2. Alumni who want to be paired with a DVS Student sign up by filling out a DVA Mentor Profile
3. SOP Committee and DVS will screen potential Mentors by reviewing their profiles and conducting
interviews as required.
4. DVS will approve the eligibility of the Mentor for students still in high school and under the age of 18.
Approvals need to come from:
a. Division Principal/Vice Principal
b. Division Guidance Counselor
c. Student’s Legal guardian (parent or dorm supervisor, as relevant)
5. Alumni who have been approved to be Mentors may request to be paired with certain Mentees, but must
provide objective justification.
a. In his/her first year as a Mentor, it is recommended to limit to 2 or less Mentees.
6. SOP Committee approves all matches based on shared interests the Mentor and Mentee have in common
7. Before mentoring commences, each Mentor is required to:
a. Undergo a 2-hour DVA Mentor Program Training
b. Sign receipt for copy of DVA Mentor Program Guidelines and DVS School Regulations
c. Sign DVA Mentor Responsibilities Agreement
d. Introduce themselves and make their contact information available to the Mentee’s family
(parents), guardian(s), and DVS guidance counselor
8. Should an issue arise in the mentoring relationship that a Mentor needs further guidance on, the SOP
Committee may call a Resolution Meetings to discuss the problem and alternative solutions. Other
mentors in the program are welcome to participate in these Resolution Meetings to help their
development as a Mentor.
