discoveredshiboriafterdiscoveringanoldphotoontheweb.Theideaofrecreatinganancient
Japanesedyeingtechniqueinspiredustospendanentireweekendexperimentingwithour
favoritedeepblue,indigo.Afterdyeingjustabouteverywhitearticleofclothinginsight,our
bluestainedfingersexcitedlyuploadedthetutorialwecouldntwaittoshareitwithour30
readers.AndsobegantheongoingseriesoftutorialsandDIYs.Wehopeyouenjoythe

Whenchoosingfabricorclothing,itsimportantthatmadeofnaturalfibers.Cotton,wool,silk
orlinenworkbest.Ialsoliketoprewashmyfabricbeforedyeing.HereImusingrectangular
dinnernapkinsbutobviously,anyshapeorarticleofclothingwilldo!Herearejustafewbasic
bindingtechniquestotry:
Itajimeshiboriisknownastheshaperesisttechnique.Tostart,foldthefabriclikean
accordion.

Folditagainintheotherdirectionagain,likeanaccordion.Placeitbetweentwopiecesof
wood,oranyflatshapedobject,andbindittogetherwithstringorrubberbands.Theshapes
andrubberbandswillpreventthedyefrompenetratingthefabrictheycover.Thelargerthe
shapeandthemorerubberbandsyouuse,themorewhiteyouwillsee.Thesmallertheshape
andfewerrubberbandsyouuse,themoreindigoyouwillsee.

ArashiistheJapanesetermforstormanditsalsoknownasthepolewrappingtechnique.It
startsbywrappingfabricaroundaplasticPVCpipeatadiagonal.Oncethefabriciswrapped,
tieapieceoftwineintoadoubleknotatthebaseofthepipe.

Wrapthetwinearoundthefabric.After67wrapsaroundthepipe,scrunchthefabricdown.
Givethetwineastrongtugtotighten.Tighteningbeforescrunchingwillmakeitmoredifficult
tocontrolandmovethefabric.

Continuewrapping,scrunchingandtighteninguntilallthefabriciscompacted.Tieaknot
abovethefabric.Thepatternwillbeonadiagonalwiththinlinesofwhite,wherethetwineis
bindingthefabric.

Kumoshiboriisknownasthepleatandbindtechnique.Itinvolvesbindingthefabricinvery
closesections,whichresultsinseveralspiderlikedesigns.Thisisjustoneofmanywaysto
experimentwiththistechnique.Startbyfoldingthefabricintoanaccordion.Pinchandbind
intoequalsections.

Dothesamewiththeoppositeside,instaggeredsections.Continuebindingwithrubber
bands,workingyourwaytowardsthecenter.

Keepbindinguntilyoucantgoanyfurther.Addadditionalrubberbandstomakethefabric
intoatightbundle.

Beresourcefulwhenbindinguseclamps,paperclips,binderclips,oddshapedwooden
pieces,canningjarlids,etc.Thereisnorightorwrongwaytoshibori!

Tosetuptheindigodyevat,followtheaccompanyingdyekitinstructions.Forthisparticular
kit,startbyfillinga5gallonbucketwith4gallonsofwarmwater.Pourtheindigodyepowder
intothebucketandstirinacircularmotion.

Thenpourinthesodaashandreductionagent.Stiragaininacircularmotionandthenin
reverse.Itisimportantnottooxidizethedyebathsokeepingitcoveredandstirringitgently
isrecommended.Oncethedyediswellmixed,coverforatleastanhour.Whenyoucheckon
thedye,youllnoticeafoamyoilslicklookingtoplayerandaneonyellowgreenishcolored
liquidbelow.Thisiswhenyouknowthedyeisready.

Rinsethefabricinanotherbucketofcleanwater.Squeezeoutallthewaterbefore
submergingitintotheindigodyebath.Gentlymanipulateandmassagethedyeintothefabric.
Again,trynottoagitatethedyebyworkinggentlyunderthesurfaceofthedye.

Afterabout5minutes,takethefabricoutofthedye.Itwillhaveagreenhuebutafterseveral
minutes,asitisexposedtooxygen,itwillturndarkblue.Carefullypeekinsideoneofyour
piecesandyoullseetheareasinwhichthedyewasntabletopenetrate.Lookingood!

Afterallthepieceshavebeendyedandallowedtooxidize,goaheadandrepeatthedying
process.Themoreitgoesintothedyebath,thedarkertheindigohuethefabricwillbe.And
remember,thefabricwillalwayslookdarkerwhenwetandwillfadeabitwhenwashedfor
thefirsttime.

thepieces.Putonafreshpairofgloves,grabapairofscissorsandkeepthatbucketofclean
waternearby.Givetheboundpiecesagoodrinseinwaterandthencarefullysnipawaythe
rubberbandsandtwine.Firstupistheshaperesisttechnique.Seehowthefabricisgridded
withstripedlinesfromtherubberbands?Mywoodensquareswerentabletoexcludethedye
