    Dear Parish Family,


    We all want (or should want) to be holier people and happier people. Holiness always leads to
    happiness, so if we work on loving God more, we will discover more joy than we could ever achieve
    by our own efforts. So here are ten tips for growing closer to God and becoming more at peace in
    ones heart:
    1. Pray every day: We shower every day and eat every day; prayer is no different. It cant
    really be put off for days at a time.
    2. Find a form of prayer that you enjoy: We Catholics have many different kinds of prayer
    available to us so there is no need to deliberately use a form that we dislike. There are the
    rosary, reading scripture prayerfully, attending daily mass, attending Eucharistic Adoration,
    reading lives of the saints and spiritual literature, Liturgy of the Hours, and offering every
    little task before us as a prayer.
    3. Pray both alone and with others: We all need time for just ourselves and God and no one
    else; but we also need to pray with our spouses, children, brothers and sisters and friends in
    order to build up these relationships. Make time for both alone prayer and joint prayer.
    4. Dont become discouraged after mistakes and sins; thats why we have confession. Just ask
    Jesus for forgiveness and go on. Its all he wants.
    5. Accept imperfections: We modern Americans are very perfectionistic. We want not really
    good we want PERFECT!! But life is never perfect. We are not perfect and neither is
    anyone around us. Hoping for perfection dooms us to unhappiness. The only way we will
    be happy is if we accept all the little imperfections in life both within ourselves and in
    others and in the world at large.
    6. Frequent the sacraments: When we go to the sacraments Jesus is able to pour his love and
    grace into us. We should attend at least Sunday mass, go to confession once every two
    months, and receive anointing if we become seriously ill.
    7. Make a daily practice of showing gratitude to God: Nothing good we have came from us so
    be sure to say thank you to Jesus at least once a day!
    8. Ask Mary and the Saints to pray for you constantly! It is so much easier to get to heaven
    with help!!
    9. Take time to study the faith: No, no one has to be a super genius like Thomas Aquinas or
    Pope John Paul II; but a little familiarity with our faith still helps enormously. Make a
    resolution to read the whole Catechism over a three year period, just reading three
    paragraphs a day.
    10. Invite your priest home for dinner! Not only can you get to know Father better but he can
    also bless your house, fields, livestock and crops while hes visiting. Two birds with one
    stone!!

    WELCOME DINNER
    Please join us Sunday, Aug. 9 at noon for a dinner to welcome
    our new pastor, Fr. Max, to St. Joseph Church. The dinner
    will be held in the parish hall. Parishioners last names
    beginning with A to G are asked to please bring a vegetable,
    last names H to N are asked to please bring a salad, and last
    names O to Z are asked to please bring a dessert.

    Thank you to the ladies of St. Joseph Church who donated
    pies to Angles Among Us to be used at Crawford County Fair.

    ST. JOSEPH PARISH COUNCIL MEETING

    The next Parish Council meeting for St. Joseph is Tues., Sept.
    15, following 5:00 Mass.

    HOMECOMING BREAKFAST
    The St. Joseph Parish Council is sponsoring the Homecoming
    Breakfast on Sunday, August 16, from 9:00 to 11:00 am. It will
    be held in the parish hall. The cost is a Free Will Donation.
    Carry Outs are available. Everyone is welcome. The menu is
    as follows: Scrambled eggs, Biscuits & Gravy, Sausage Patty,
    Hash Browns, Cinnamon Roll, Juice, Coffee, Milk.

    ST. JOHN VIANNEY: PATRON OF PARISH PRIESTS


    St. John Vianney is better known as the Cure (pastor) of Ars
    (little town in east-central France), near the city of Lyon. Born
    on May 8, 1786, near Lyon, he began the study of Latin at an
    early age. After some private coaching in theology, he
    completed his studies for the priesthood and was ordained in
    1815, the year of Napoleons defeat by the English at Waterloo
    (in Belgium). He was sent to be an assistant priest in Ecully,
    where he spent three years. In 1818, his bishop sent him to be
    the parish priest at Ars, saying, Its a little parish, John, where
    there isnt much love of God; you must put some into it.

    preached sound homilies and said Mass devoutly which his


    parishioners loved! He spoke in the simple language of the
    peasants who made up a large part of his parish. However, he
    preached on all subjects, including those that were delicate and
    somewhat sensitive, without compromising his Catholic beliefs.
    John Vianney also prayed a lot, fasted, and heard many
    confessions. He was concerned about the neglect of the church
    building, wanting it to be a fitting place for the Blessed
    Sacrament. Religion had been at a low ebb in the small village
    of Ars, but his hard work, his teaching, and the way he lived
    his life turned the small parish into a model for other French
    cities. Reports of his holiness soon spread to other countries
    and by 1827, people flocked to Ars from all parts of France.
    Ars became a place of pilgrimages because of its holy pastor.
    At times, he would hear confessions for sixteen hours a day!
    People came from all over to confess to him. Every year, from
    1845 until his death on August 4, 1859, around 20,000 persons
    of every age and condition visited Ars to see a saint, to speak
    to him, to ask for his prayers, but above all, to make their
    confessions to him. He was canonized in 1925 and has become
    known as the Patron of Parish Priestsyet he did what every
    priest does. He became a Saint by doing it extraordinarily well.
    The secret was his love for God and his generosity in giving
    himself to the priestly service of God and his people. He often
    said, Do only what you could, or would, offer to God.

    St. Margaret Mary School Alumni will hold a Reunion/BBQ
