Fwd: Press Release: Court Ruling a Total Victory for National Conference of Black Mayors Leadership
Saturday, March 29, 2014 5:25:40 PM
?We are gratified that the court has validated the election of our
leadership and vindicated our efforts to take the necessary steps to
restore accountability and fiscal integrity to this venerable and critical
organization,? said Kevin Johnson, president of the National Conference
of Black Mayors. ?Now we can move forward by taking the actions that
will address any outstanding problems we have in order to ensure that
the NCBM will benefit current and future mayors and their constituents.?
The new leadership had created a special task force and ordered an audit
when it was discovered that the 40-year-old organization had lost its
501(c)(3) tax status and run up more than $1,000,000 in debts to the
IRS and others. Williams was terminated by the board on September 6,
2013 ?due to your failure over a sustained period of several years to
fulfill core duties and responsibilities of the Executive Director of NCBM
and your recent admissions regarding your use of the bank accounts of
NCBM and the NCBM Title Company for personal expenditures totaling at
least $623,000 without board approval.?
###
The National Conference of Black Mayors was founded in 1974 as a private, nonpolitical, non-partisan, non-profit organization that represents African American
mayors nationwide. Representing 650 mayors today, NCBM advocates for and
impacts more than 48 million people. The organization?s mission is to enhance the
executive management capacity of its members for the purpose of governing viable
municipalities. As such, NCBM provides technical and management assistance to its
members as well as serves as a clearing house for information pertinent for
municipal development.

Hey Neerav,
I hope you're well. We have a few options we are working with in
terms of upcoming events that we are slated to have an education
program. I must say your name comes up on a short list of speakers
whose presentation I enjoyed hearing and wanted to put in front of
other audiences.
In July (7/18-7/20), we will have the US Conference of Mayors
leadership meeting in Philadelphia, and in July/August we might
have a National Conference of Black Mayors Meeting in Atlanta,
and in October we are planning an education policy conference for
civil rights leaders in Chicago. The only one with a firm date is the
first at this time. Let me know if you think your schedule would not
allow for an event in any of these time frames.
Thanks,

Thanks for reaching out Kevin. I appreciate your desire to make the NCBM organization
and Business Council a success.
Here are just a few things I would like for NCBM to consider.
I hope this doesn?t come across as negative but these are just a few of the items I
think would help to move the organization forward.
And as my college professor use to tell me, ?Don?t bring me a problem without
offering a solution?. I would like to offer myself to assist in any manner you think I can
be beneficial to the organization.

Mayor Johnson,
To summarize, United Water ? and as far as I know being chair ? other council
members have had a positive relationship with NCBM. By and large, we have had
access to mayors and have grown or sustained our businesses. The challenges have
come from the negative press created by the leadership of the organization. As chair
of the council, I have had to defend the organization to council members time and
again. To her credit, Vanessa Williams has been on numerous conference calls that I
initiated, in order to provide information about matters that ended up in the public
eye. Even if a council member needed additional information, Ms. Williams availed
herself to that member.
As chair, I received many compliments on behalf of the council from mayors who were
grateful for our support. In my opinion, the council is a relatively close-knit,
professional, and productive subset of the NCBM. The core companies that make up
the council have helped sustain the NCBM, and have done so gladly.
We stand ready to provide advice and counsel to the leadership. We trust that the
leadership will continue to work towards resolving their internal difficulties.
Regards,
ED

Subject: RE: Sacramento Mayor - NCBM Business Council
Mayor Johnson:
At John Deere we believe a true commitment to community development extends
beyond the bottom line, through good times and bad. Our focus on community is a
natural extension of respectful decisions that span the 176 year history of our
company. We have elected to sponsor select not-for-profit national organizations that
promote education, agriculture, and other human and community development
programs. The National Conference of Black Mayors meets these criteria and we have
been proud to be associated with this organization for the past 9 years. Your call to
action for the Mayors to make a difference in their communities was inspiring at the
2013 conference! In order for the Mayors to lead, they need to be supported by a
strong association and their business partners.
We at John Deere, as well as the other NCBM corporate sponsors, have no shortage of
opportunities to engage in philanthropic activities. We look at 3 key criteria when
making the decision to engage or not with an organization:
1. Does this organization share the same values as John Deere? Our core beliefs
are to run a business based on integrity, quality, commitment and innovation.
2. Is this an organization that is investing in their communities and making the
world a better place?
3. A rhetorical question? Is this an organization that I would be proud to showcase
to my CEO?
Throughout our association with NCBM there have been many times when we could
stand alongside of the Mayors and the NCBM leadership with great pride. There have
also been opportunities when we would rather have been in a different place. So as
not to make this email too long we would like to offer some suggestions for
improvement to the Business Council:
1. The activities of the NCBM organization should not potentially have an impact
the sponsor?s brands.
2. Mayors should engage with Business Council members on a community needs
basis?not just during social functions (i.e. attending the Business Council
Breakfast).
3. Business Council Partners should have access to a distribution list of NCBM
members to include mailing and email addresses.
4. The Business Council should assist NCBM in organizing the annual convention.
This needs to be run more like a business function. Coordinated agenda,
materials sent in advance of the event, relevant topics and most importantly?
sessions need to happen on time!
Again, John Deere is pleased with the association we have had with NCBM over the
years and we would like to be a continued part of making this organization great. My
colleagues and I are available to conference with you and your staff if you would care
to expand the dialogue on any of the comments above.
Wishing you continued success with the City of Sacramento, NCBM and the National
Conference of Mayors.
Kindest regards,
Collis R. Jones

Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend NCBM as planned. An un-anticipated mid-trip
change necessitates me being back in Washington tomorrow.
I sincerely apologize for the change in circumstances, particularly in light of how
accommodating you've been.
I hope there will be an opportunity to engage at another event.

These organizations have partnered together with a bold goal of reducing
childhood obesity by 2015. The event was mostly attended by health
professions working in the area of childhood obesity. I am sure that
there were other elected officials besides the presenter (Mayor Chip
Johnson, Hernando, MS) in attendance or watching via the webinar, if not
there should have been since the information that was presented was
staggering.
It wasn?t the fact that 17% of our children are obese that struck me,
that?s something that you can look around and see every day, nor was it
the fact that the majority of children are fromminority (mostly Black and
Hispanic population) and from low income families. It was the fact that
this generation of children are the first to suffer from adult diseases Type
II Diabetes, Hypertension, High Cholesterol, Fatty Liver disease to name
a fewand thatthis is the first generation that isn?t expected to outlive
their parents.
Mayor Johnson spoke of what actions he has taken in his city to address
this problem and the issue of creating a healthy community as a whole
and the benefits it has had. He has been able to reduce the town?s
employees insurance cost by introducing a health/wellness and exercise
program, thereby as an unintended consequence, been able to give the
employees a raise with some of the money saved. The town also has
attracted new businesses for economic development, since companies are
looking for healthy towns and cities to relocate in. Dr. Jamie Jeffrey,
Charleston, WV spoke about the benefits that children have in their life
when healthy eating and exercise become a part of their daily routine.
Rev. Michal Minor of Hernando, MS, national director of H.O.P.E. HHS
Partnership, National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. spoke about the
importance of the faith-based community partnering with elected officials,
non-profits and schools in addressing this growing epidemic and the
success he has had in MS.
Although everyone spoke about the importance of partnerships and
collaboration, they also stressed that we should not forget the ?firestarter? and the power of one. We must remember that it is the
environment and lifestyles that have brought about these health
problems that not only our children are experiencing, but our society as a
whole. I can?t help but remember the words of NCBM President Kevin
Johnson, when he spoke of how our Black communities are always on
the bottom of the ?good? list and at the ?top? of the bad list, this is one
more list that we are on the top, but we as elected officials have the
ability to move our towns to the bottom.
The help is out there for us to be able to reverse this trend in our communities, the
question is how we are going to take this information and augment it into our towns. I
have listed below othercontacts (besides the ones listed above)for more information.

He wanted to know if we knew of Partner America who is trying to do business in his area and listing
that they are doing business with the Conference of Mayors. Apparently the person is dropping the
Mayors name and/ or the organization.
In my voice mail message I let him know that I was not aware of any relationship with Partner
America. I also asked if they were doing business with the USCM or NCBM. I asked him to email me
any additional information he may have or call the USCM directly if that was the organization being
referenced.

Tumar,
How are you? I hope you're doing well. Long time no talk. Let's see, what's happened since you last
saw me... Well, I had my beautiful baby, Hana, and I went on a wonderful maternity leave, and now
I'm back! Nothing major, right :)
Just have a super quick question for you - is Mayor Nutter planning on attending NCBM next week? We
will be there and were wondering if we could look forward to seeing him there.
Thanks!

Historic Signing of Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act Today by President Obama
Wednesday, July 21, 2010 6:14:49 AM
President Obama will today sign into law the Wall Street
Reform and Consumer Protection Act. The National
Conference of Black Mayors recognizes Congress for the
passage of this landmark legislation. NCBM President
Mayor Robert L. Bowser will be present for the historic
signing this morning. Watch it live @11:30am (EST) at
www.whitehouse.gov/live
The Top 10 Things You May Not Know About the Wall
Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act
Here are 10 aspects of the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act you may not
know about -- the online attention-deficit version.
1. Stronger protections for consumers against unfair credit card practices like rate hikes for
existing credit card balances.
2. Mortgage brokers will be prohibited from making higher commissions by selling mortgages
they know consumers can?t afford.
3. Free annual credit scores so people can stay on top of their finances.
4. No more taxpayer-funded bailouts. If a company can?t make it, it will have to liquidate.
5. Greater input by company shareholders over how much a CEO gets paid. And companies?
compensation boards are now required to be truly independent.
6. Brokers who offer investment advice will have to act in the best interests of their customers,
not their own financial interests.
7. Financial firms won't be allowed to grow so large that if one fails, it will affect the entire
financial system.
8. There will be one agency whose sole job is to make sure that consumers get the protections
they deserve and to set clear rules to hold banks, mortgage companies, payday lenders, and
credit card lenders accountable.
9. Businesses can't be charged extra fees for debit card ?swipe fees? that exceed the cost of
processing transactions.
10. You can learn plentymore here at WhiteHouse, gov or atfinancialstability.gov

Introduction to Mayor Johnson"s Intergovernmental Staff
Friday, January 04, 2013 1:14:38 PM
Hi Virdena,
Thanks again for joining the call this morning with StudentsFirst. I look forward to
engaging with you in the next call regarding the Kansas policy report card.
As we work together more, I wanted to make sure you are introduced to two of my
colleagues here at Mayor Johnson's office, Mariah Sheriff and Shannon Hovis (cc'ed).
Mariah and Shannon are, respectively, the Director and Coordinator of
Intergovernmental Affairs in Education in Mayor Johnson's office. As you likely know,
the Mayor is a national leader in the education space, especially among several key
Mayoral organizations (such as US Conference of Mayors and National Conference of
Black Mayors). Mariah and Shannon work closely with Mayor's offices around the
country on initiatives related to education.
Mariah has offered to have a call with you to introduce herself and the work her
team is doing - I'll let her and Shannon take it from here.
Thank you,
Meera
