Inhaled Anticholinergics ipratropium (Atrovent, Atrovent HFA)


Therapeutic Use
Relief of bronchospasm in
patients who have COPD
Treatment of allergen-induced
and exercise-induced asthma

Side/Adverse Effects

Administration
Follow manufacturers
instructions for using delivery
devices.
Follow dosage limits and
schedules.
Allow the prescribed time
between puffs.
Delay use of other inhalants for
5 minutes.
Do not use as an emergency
rescue medication.
Rinse the mouth after use to
reduce unpleasant taste.
Interventions

Patient Instructions

Dry mouth, hoarseness

Provide patient water and hard


candy

Suck on hard candy.


Sip water frequently.

Increased intraocular pressure

Schedule routine testing for


glaucoma.

Have regular eye examinations


to test for glaucoma.

Urinary retention

Monitor urinary elimination


patterns, especially in older
adults.

Report any changes in urinary


elimination.

Contraindications
Allergy to soya lecithin,
soybean, peanuts

Precautions
Glaucoma
Prostatic hypertrophy
Bladder neck obstruction

Interactions
Beta2-adrenergic agonists
enhance bronchodilation.
