From the Pastor

Man proposes, God disposes! This is quoted from Thomas a Kempis Of the Imitation of
Christ, in Chapter 19, Book 1: "For the resolutions of the just depend rather on the grace of God
than on their own wisdom; and in Him they always put their trust, whatever they take in hand.
For man proposes, but God disposes; neither is the way of man in his own hands". The exact
Latin phrase translated as Homo proponit, sed Deus dispone. Many of its numerous
insights originate in the Bible especially in the Book of Proverbs- 16:9 and in 19:21. I mentioned
this saying as I have only three weekends left before Fr. Max Biltz takes over. In this last three
weekends I want to write about the following: this week the lessons I learned from these changes;
next weekend will be about the lessons I learned from my assignment here in Girard and Arma,
and in the final weekend will be more about gratitude to God and to all of you.
This weekend I want to share with you what I have learned in my 29 years as a priest especially as
related to change. Since 1986 when I was ordained a priest, I already have undergone 14 changes
of assignments: In the Philippines, I was an associate pastor, director of Social Action and CRS,
rector in the seminary, and pastor in three different parish assignments. Then I came to the US
and was in Detroit, MI. There I was assigned as chaplain at Detroit Medical Center, then
associate pastor in a parish in Grosse Pointe for 5 years. Then I joined the army and have been
assigned in Michigan, in Fort Jackson, South Carolina, Fort Belvoir in Virginia, then by divine
providence I am blown into Kansas.
Are all these my plan? No! When I left the Philippines I was only planning on serving here in the
US for 5 years, then I will go back to the Philippines. My goal was that within these 5 years I will
continue to serve as a priest and study at the same time working towards a theological doctorate
degree. After a year as associate pastor in Grosse Pointe in Michigan, the parishioners there made
a fundraiser to pay for my tuition for a doctoral studies at the Catholic Theological Union (CTU)
in Hyde Park, Chicago. (The family who visited me here in Girard in 2012 from Michigan was one
of those who supported me.) I was taking up Doctorate in Ministry (DMin) with concentration on
Cross Cultural Ministry. I did it for two years, driving to Chicago from Detroit once every week
during my day off to complete my course work. A year after 9-11 happened I felt the calling of
serving in the military as a chaplain and I was recruited by the army right away and was
commissioned right then in 2006. I was working on my thesis when the army deployed me to
South Carolina, then Virginia, and finally in Kansas. I am now in my 15 years here in the US and
my five year plan was tossed aside! I have no regrets though and I am happy with all that
transpired. Through all these changes there were always uncertainties and doubts. But I always
trust that if this is what God plans for me that He will not leave me alone and that he will always
be there for me! I am going into my 5th assignment here in the diocese as I get ready to go to
Hutchinson. As in the past, I am facing more uncertainties. But I am sure that God will never
abandon me! The same with Fr. Biltz and all of you as well. I am sure you are facing some
uncertainties but I am confident God will be there for you!

God bless you all! Fr. Roger

TOTUS TUUS

This week starts our Totus Tuus parish program for youth.
Totus Tuus is a summer program for school youth. Children in
grades 1-6 have a program that runs Monday (June 15th) to
Friday (June 19th) from 9:00 am to 3:00pm. They need to bring
a sack lunch every day. Youth in Middle School and High
School have a program that runs Sunday evening (June 14th) to
Thursday (June 18th) from 7:30-9:45 pm. All youth are highly
encouraged to attend. The cost of this program has been paid
by our parish, and your youth can attend free. If you want to
help support the event, you can send a snack item like cookies
or fruit for the youth to enjoy during their experience.
If you have signed up to provide a meal, thank you. Your
support is important to the success of this program. Those
providing lunches for the team should bring it to the parish hall
by 11:50 -Enough food for the four team members. Supper will
be at your residence at 5:30pm. If you have questions, please
