PURPOSE AND USE OF PROCESS INDUSTRY PRACTICES

In an effort to minimize the cost of process industry facilities, this Practice has
been prepared from the technical requirements in the existing standards of major
industrial users, contractors, or standards organizations. By harmonizing these technical
requirements into a single set of Practices, administrative, application, and engineering
costs to both the purchaser and the manufacturer should be reduced. While this Practice
is expected to incorporate the majority of requirements of most users, individual
applications may involve requirements that will be appended to and take precedence over
this Practice. Determinations concerning fitness for purpose and particular matters or
application of the Practice to particular project or engineering situations should not be
made solely on information contained in these materials. The use of trade names from
time to time should not be viewed as an expression of preference but rather recognized as
normal usage in the trade. Other brands having the same specifications are equally
correct and may be substituted for those named. All practices or guidelines are intended
to be consistent with applicable laws and regulations including OSHA requirements. To
the extent these practices or guidelines should conflict with OSHA or other applicable
laws or regulations, such laws or regulations must be followed. Consult an appropriate
professional before applying or acting on any material contained in or suggested by the
Practice.

NEMA MG 1

General
4.1

The motor and its accessories shall comply with the requirements contained in the
latest edition of IEEE 841 and NEMA MG 1 unless specifically amended in this
Practice.

4.2

The motor and its accessories shall be rated for continuous operation at 1.15 Service
Factor.

4.3

The temperature rise of motor shall be limited to 80 C (144 F) at 1.0 Service Factor
and 90 C (162 F) at 1.15 Service Factor.

4.4

The motor shall be applied within its rating based on Service Factor of 1.0.

4.5

Specific application and other requirements for each motor are given on the Motor
Data Sheet.

4.6

Nameplate shall indicate Identification Numbers of all motor accessories in

accordance with National Electrical Code (NEC) 1996, Section 500.

4.7

In Class I, Division 2 locations, the installation of nonexplosionproof enclosed motors,

such as squirrel-cage induction motors without brushes, switching mechanisms, or
similar arc-producing devices, is permitted under NEC, 1996 Section 501-8(b). All arc
producing devices such as sliding contacts, switching mechanisms, and resistance
devices shall be provided with enclosures approved for Class I, Division 2 locations in
accordance with NEC, 1996 Section 501-3(b). The exposed surface of space heaters
used to prevent condensation of moisture during shutdown periods shall not exceed 80
percent of the ignition temperature in degrees Celsius of the gas or vapor involved
when operated at rated voltage, and the maximum surface temperature [based upon a
40 C (104 F) ambient] shall be permanently marked on a visible nameplate mounted
on the motor. Otherwise, space heaters shall be approved for Class I, Division 2
locations.

Mounting, and Terminal Box Location

5.1

Mounting
5.1.1

5.2

Unless specified otherwise on the Motor Data Sheet, the motor shall be
horizontally mounted.

Terminal Box Location

5.2.1

Location of terminal housing shall be assembly symbol F-1 as shown in

NEMA MG 1-4.03-1993. This assembly shows a motor horizontally mounted
on the floor with terminal box housing located on the right hand side, as seen
from the nondrive end or the end opposite to shaft extension.

Space Heaters
6.1

Space heaters shall be provided on all motors 100 horsepower and above and for lower
horsepower motors if specified on the Data Sheet. All motors specified for high
humidity applications, such as cooling towers, shall be supplied with space heaters
irrespective of motor horsepower.

6.2

Space heater leads shall be terminated in a housing separate from the motor terminal
leads.

6.3

Space heaters shall be 240 volts rated and applied at 120 volts. Space heaters and
design shall comply with IEEE 841-1994, Section 11.

6.4

An engraved caution nameplate shall be provided on the front of the motor terminal
box stating CAUTION: SPACE HEATERS MAY BE ENERGIZED. The
nameplate shall be black engraving on a yellow background.

Mechanical Features
