Pier Analysis
In masonry structures, it is generally assumed that in one and
two storey buildings the walls may be considered cantilevered
and the segment of the walls between adjacent openings are
called piers and might be considered fixed at top and bottom,
depending upon the relative rigidness of the walls versus those
of the floor diaphragms.
The main assumptions in the analysis are (Schneider and
Dickey, 1994):

STEPS TO BE FOLLOWED
1. Since we are considering the seismic force only in E- W
direction, the walls in N-S direction will resist the forces and
the walls in E-W direction were ignored.
2. Computation of Relative Stiffness (Rx )
3. Calculation of distance of considered wall from centre of
rigidity (dy =2Y- ey ) in m, Rxdy and Rx dy for both N-wall
and S-wall.
4. Negative torsional shear was neglected.
5. Calculation of distribution of direct shear (KN)
Direct shear force from North-wall = Vx RN
Direct shear force from South-wall =VxRS
Calculation of Torsional shear force (KN)
Torsional force in North-wall = (Rx dy )/ (Rx dy2) (Vx ey)
Torsional force in South-wall = (Rx dy )/ (Rx dy2) (Vx ey)

STEPS TO BE FOLLOWED
1. Computation of Relative Stiffness (Ry ),
2. Calculation of distance of considered wall from centre of
rigidity (dx =2X- ex ) in m, Rydx and Ry dx2 for both E-wall
and W-wall.
3. Calculation of distribution of direct shear force (KN)
Direct shear force from East-wall =VyRE
Direct shear force from West-wall = Vy RW
Calculation of Torsional shear force:
Torsional force in East-wall = (Ry dx )/ (Ry dx2) (Vy ex)
Torsional force in West-wall = (Ry dx )/ (Ry dx2) (Vy
ex)

Centroid of each pier is calculated and then for the net section of
the wall
Distance from left edge to centroid = Ail / l
Where l= distance from lift edge of wall to centroid of pier and
Ai = Area
Moment of Inertia
Moment of inertia of each pier is calculated and then for the net
section of the wall by formula below.
Where In= I + Aili2

CONCLUSIONS
CONCLUSIONS
----------------------------------------------------------------------------Masonry buildings are the most common type of construction
used for all housing around the world. But the post earthquake
survey has proved that the masonry buildings are most
vulnerable to and have suffered maximum damages in the past

CONCLUSION DRAWN:
1. The best shapes of earthquake resistant buildings are regular
shapes and preferably with two axes of symmetry. This
ensures the centre of gravity and rigidity will be the same or
close to each other resulting in minimization of torsion
moment in building.
