TITLE: MOVEMENT OF SUBSTANCES ACROSS THE PLASMA MEMBRANE

LEARNING OUTCOME:

ANALYSING THE MOVEMENT OF SUBSTANCES ACROSS THE PLASMA

MEMBRANE
THE SEMI PERMEABILITY OF THE PLASMA MEMBRANE ONLY ALLOWS CERTAIN SUBSTANCES TO
PASS THROUGH IT
STUDYING OSMOSIS USING AN OSMOMETER
Material:

Benedict solution, starch suspension, iodine solution, glucose solution, Visking

Tube, distilled water and thread

Apparatus:

test tubes, beaker, Bunsen burner, wire gauze, tripod stand, capillary tube,
dropper, 10 ml measuring cylinder, matches, test tube holder

A) You are required to conduct an experiment using the materials and apparatus given
following the procedure below.
1. A Visking tube (8cm) is soaked in distilled water for 5 to 10 minutes before the
experiment.
2. Set up apparatus as shown in the diagram below.

3.
4.
5.
6.

Mark the initial level of the solution in the capillary tube.

Leave the apparatus for 10 minutes.
Observe the level of solution in capillary tube. Explain your observation.
Using a dropper, take 10ml of distilled water in the beaker and mix it with 10ml iodine

solution. What can you observe? Explain your observation.

7. 5ml of iodine solution is added into the beaker and left for 10 minutes. What can you
observe? Explain your observation.
B) Based on your observations, describe the movement of substances across the plasma
membrane.

C) Based on your experiment results, discuss the problem below:

During her visit to her village, Pn Salina realized that her mothers pet ducks produce lots of
eggs. Pn Salina wants to produce salted egg to last longer. Suggest ways for Pn. Salina can
produce the salted egg. Explain your answer.

STUDYING THE MOVEMENT OF SUBSTANCES ACROSS A SEMI PERMEABLE MEMBRANE

Material:

Benedicts solution, 1 % starch suspension, iodine solution, 30% glucose solution,

a Visking tube and a cotton thread

Apparatus:

test tube, beakers, Bunsen burner

A) You are required to conduct an experiment using the materials and apparatus given
following the procedure below.
1. A Visking tube is soaked in water for 5 minutes.
2. An end of the Visking tube is tied firmly with thread.
3. Apparatus is set as shown below.
4. Colour of the solution is recorded.
5. The outer surface of the visking tube is rinsed with distilled water.
6. A beaker is filled with 400ml of distilled water and 15ml of iodine solution.
7. The color of the solution is recorded.
8. Visking tube is soaked in the beaker and left for 40 minutes.
9. After 40 minutes, the visking tubing is transferred into a dry beaker.
10.The colour of the solutions in the visking tube and the beaker is observed and recorded.
11.Both solutions is tested for the presence of glucose using Benedicts solution.
12.2ml of the solution from the beaker and visking tube is poured in 2 separate test tubes
and 1 ml of benedicts solution is added into each test tubes. The solutions are heated in
a boiling water bath for about 5 minutes and the change of colour is recorded.
