Phase 1: Familiarisation
Read through transcript
Jot down notes or ideas on a piece of paper as you go
What is in the data?
What is interesting about it?
What codes might you want to use?
Output: list of ideas and potential codes to use

QSR NVivo 9
A tool for managing qualitative research data
Interview transcripts, videos, pictures, data bases
Aids in the analysis process, but will NOT do the analysis

for you!

Setting Up a Project in NVivo

Double-click on NVivo icon to open program
On File tab of ribbon click New
Insert title APS320 in dialogue box
Add description (optional)
Use Browse to change location to save on your personal
drive

Highlight Internals (top left menu)

Previously, when conducting qualitative research you have
coded data
Each code can be thought of as a label or category that may be applied to
further data
In NVivo you work through exactly the same process of

coding
Each code is represented as a node
A node contains all data that has been assigned that code

Working With Transcripts

To open a transcript, double click on it
It will open in the Detail View below

Coding Data and Creating Nodes

Click on Nodes in Navigation View
Highlight with cursor part of interview you wish to code
Right click to select code selection
Select code selection at new node
Type the code name in the Name section.
Add a description for this code if you want to

Work systematically through your transcript applying codes
as you go
Select the other transcripts for your analysis
Import them into your Project
Begin familiarisation and coding of remaining transcripts
Dont forget to save your project

What is the relationship between codes?
Are there left-overs?
Explore how emerging themes are related to each other
What is the relationship between themes?
Are some themes sub-themes of broader themes?
Draw a rough thematic map of relationships

Each Node
Double click on node of interest in List View
Contents of node will be displayed in Detail View
Shows all parts of all interviews coded under that node

Parent Child Relationships

If you think one node should be a subset (child) of another
node (parent)
Right click on proposed child node and select Cut
Right click on proposed adult node and select Paste

Merging Nodes
If you think two nodes are actually coding the same thing
you can merge the nodes
Right click on the code you want to merge and select Cut
Right click on the code you want to merge it into and select Merge into
selected node

Deleting Nodes
If you decide one of your nodes is not useful, you can
delete it altogether
Right click on node and select Delete

Rearranging Nodes: Your Go!

Work through your nodes and delete, merge or make
parent-child relationships as you go
You can also rename your nodes
Aim to identify categories or themes
One of your existing nodes may become a category, or
you may need to create a new node to represent the
category, with existing nodes as children of the category

Phase 4: Reviewing Themes

Involves the refinement of the themes developed in Phase
3
Is there enough evidence to support each theme?
Are there overlaps in themes?
Do any themes need to be divided?
Aim: Data within themes should cohere meaningfully,

while there should be clear and identifiable distinctions
between themes (p. 91)

Phase 4: How to Review Themes

Level 1: Read data extracts for each theme to ensure
coherent pattern
Remove data extracts that do not fit
May need to modify theme or create new theme
May need to redraw your thematic map

Creating Memos
A memo can be created on its own, linked to a source, or
linked to a node
To create a new memo
Click Sources in Navigation View
Click Memos folder
On ribbon, go to the Sources group on the Create tab and click Memo
Enter name and description and click OK
Your new memo will be opened in Detail View
Cntrl-Shift-T to insert time and date stamp

Attaching Memo to Node

A memo can be attached a node
In Navigation View select Nodes and open the node you
want to link to
Right click on node, select Memo Link, then Link to
Existing Memo

Phase 4: How to Review Themes

Level 2: Consider whether individual themes and thematic
map are reflective of meanings in the entire data set
Reread data to ensure themes represent data
Code data into existing themes where previously missed
Output: identification of clear themes, relationships and

story

Phase 5: Defining and Naming Themes

Define and refine themes
Capture essence of each theme by organising data extracts to provide
coherent and internally consistent account, with accompanying narrative
(p. 92)
What story does each theme tell?
How does each theme fit into overall story?
How do each of the sub-themes contribute to the theme?
What will you call each theme?
Output: Able to describe scope and content of each theme

Exporting Nodes
In navigation view click on Nodes and select Nodes folder
Right click on node you want to export and select Export
and Export Node
Select Reference View, Name and Description and
Open on Export
Click OK and select location to save to and OK again
Document will open up in word
