Ranger Coordinator
Background
Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa (KJ) is a Martu controlled organisation that is working to
build strong, sustainable communities founded on Martu culture and land.
KJ operates five Indigenous ranger teams as part of its land management
program. The broader program aims to realise Martu aspirations for getting
back to their traditional country, passing on their knowledge and culture to
younger generations and to actively work on country to make it healthy.
The ranger teams are generally funded by the Australian Governments
Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and
Communities (SEWPAC) under the Working on Country (WoC) Program.
Funding has been approved till 30 June 2018 after which it is expected that
funding will be on-going.
The WoC Program aims to provide environmental and employment outcomes
by engaging local Indigenous communities to manage their country.
Each permanent ranger team has a mix of full-time and part-time Indigenous
ranger positions with a total of 6 - 8 equivalent full time positions each
(including the ranger coordinator position).
We are currently in the process of seeking additional contracts that potentially
will allow the expansion of the program to establish additional ranger teams.
Objectives
This position has the following key objectives till June 2018:
1. Provide leadership and co-ordination of a core group of permanent
Martu employees to undertake Land Management Duties consistent
with the Working On Country funding requirements;
2. Integrating traditional ecological knowledge with contemporary NRM
practice to manage the natural and cultural values identified in the
Healthy Country Plan;
3. Provide mentoring, support and inspiration to the Ranger Team and the
broader Martu workforce seeking opportunity within the ranger
program;
4. Promote responsible work practices to ensure a healthy and safe work
environment both on country and in the community.

Job Description: Ranger Coordinator

Role
The Martu Ranger coordinators are exciting and important positions that are
pivotal in KJs land programs.
The positions have the following roles:
1. Development and management of a ranger team. This includes
development of work plans including schedules for training, field trips
and other activities;
2. Providing leadership, mentoring and support for the rangers;
3. Facilitating the integration of traditional ecological knowledge
with contemporary NRM practice in on-ground activities;
4. Ensuring appropriate workplace health and safety procedures are
followed to provide a safe working environment;
5. Reporting on program outcomes. As a requirement of the WoC
funding, six monthly reports are required on progress to date against
the work plan;
6. Providing input into the KJs broader programs. This involves
being involved in broader planning processes and looking for
opportunities to work collaboratively with other staff, projects and
activities;
7. Supporting the overall objectives of Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa;
8. Other duties as directed.
Key performance indicators
The position has the following key performance indicators:
1. Ability to consistently manage a sustainable and safe work commitment
in a remote setting;
2. The level of satisfaction of the Martu rangers and community elders
with the ranger team;
3. The number of Martu employed in the ranger team in:
a. permanent full-time positions;
b. permanent part-time positions;
c. casual positions;
4. Effective delivery of the WOC and other funding requirements.
Reporting
The position reports to the Mens Program Manager.

Interaction with other KJ Staff


KJ operates as a very close team of Martu and non-Martu people who support
each other in the delivery of programs. Ranger coordinators will interact with
other staff such as:
1. Other ranger coordinators and Land Management Program team
members either through joint projects or team meetings. At times there
is the opportunity and considerable benefits for ranger teams to
combine and undertake joint activities;
2. The Puntura-ya Ninti staff(culture and heritage).This team includes
people that have worked for many years working with Martu and who
have access to material on Martu culture and society including an
archive of audio-visual resources;
3. The Strategy and Governance staff. This team focuses on strategy
development. It also manages a leadership program targeting young
Martu rangers;
4. Corporate services staff that will assist with processing of payments
and salaries and the development of relevant policies and procedures;
5. Management and advisory directors with backgrounds in law, finance,
business, education and community development and who can help in
the management and expansion of the program.
6. Communications and information management staff This team
focuses on external communications such as newsletters, films,
reports, website and other cross-cultural education programs.
Depending on the location of the position, ranger coordinators would
generally travel into KJs office in Newman at least every 4 to 6 weeks.
This allows re-provisioning of supplies and the opportunity to meet and
work with other KJ staff based in Newman.
Selection Criteria
People from many backgrounds may be suited to the position if they have the
talent and aptitude for this type of work.
The selection criteria include:
Essential criteria

Highly developed inter-personal skills are essential to enable the


capacity to work closely, easily and effectively with an Indigenous
team. This will involve providing leadership in such a way to foster
development of the ranger team and its individual members. It will
require the ability to meld cultural considerations while at the same time
developing realistic and viable working arrangements for Martu;

The ability to develop, train and manage a team is essential. This will
involve challenges beyond those of training a mainstream team. It will
require alignment of mainstream methods and activities to Martu
aspirations with consideration to literacy and social constraints;

Qualifications or background in environmental science or outdoor


education;
Good communication skills are essential to work closely, easily and
effectively with other KJ staff and project partners such as DEC, the
local shire and community councils. The position will also require
public presentations on the projects activities;

Good logistical, mechanical and practical skills relevant to NRM


activities in a remote setting are essential. This may include four wheel
drive operation and recovery and the ability to operate with limited
resources at times;

Self-motivation and the ability to work without supervision are essential;

The capacity and willingness to live in a remote community and a


desire to participate in desert life are essential;

A current drivers licence is essential;

Police clearances for the following work are also essential.

Desirable criteria

Qualifications or background in community development particularly in


a cross-cultural environment is highly desirable;

Experience in operating land management activities out of remote or


arid zone Indigenous communities is highly desirable;

A willingness and aptitude to learn language is highly desirable;

Sound administrative, written and computer skills would be an


advantage.

Conditions
Housing is provided with the positions as well as a 4WD vehicle for work use
only. Successful candidates will need to provide their own vehicle for
personal use.
The precise salary and conditions will be negotiated with the successful
applicants. As an indication:

Base salary will be from $80,000 - $85,000 dependant on experience,


plus statutory superannuation;

KJ has deductible gift recipient (DGR) status. Salary packaging of

10 weeks annual leave. Due to the limitations in the field season,


annual leave generally has to be taken during the hot summer months.
Community based positions are encouraged to take 1 2 weeks leave
during the field season as required.

Job Description: Ranger Coordinator

The position will involve regular work on-country with the Martu rangers during
the cooler months of April - October. These trips will vary from short periods
(2-3 days) to sometimes 1-2 weeks depending on, location, the time of year
and work requirements.
