Name of the experiment:

Feasibility study of PV Solar power system (DC) using the software

RETScreen International.
Overview:
RETScreen is a decision-support tool designed to help decision makers and energy professionals
evaluate the financial viability of renewable energy, energy efficiency and cogeneration projects around
the world. RETScreen models both new and conventional technologies, allowing for comparisons
between technology options. The software can be used to evaluate benefits from both clean energy
production from power generation projects and savings through energy efficiency projects, accounting
for project costs, emission reductions, and financial risk. The software is distributed for free, and
requires Microsoft Excel to run.
About the software:
The RETScreen International Clean Energy Project Analysis Software is a unique decision support
tool developed with the contribution of numerous experts from government, industry, and academia.
The software can be used worldwide to evaluate the energy production and savings, life-cycle costs,
emission reductions, financial viability and risk for various types of energy efficient and renewable
energy technologies (RETs). The software also includes product, cost and climate databases, and a
detailed online user manual. Other tools include: a case study based on a college/university-level
training course; an engineering electronic textbook; and an extensive Website. The RETScreen
International Clean Energy Decision Support Centre seeks to build the capacity of planners, decisionmakers and industry to implement renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. This objective is
achieved by: developing decision-making tools (e.g. RETScreen Software) that reduce the cost of prefeasibility studies; disseminating knowledge to help people make better decisions; and by training
people to better analyse the technical and financial viability of possible projects. RETScreen
International is managed under the leadership and ongoing financial support of Natural Resources
Canada's (NRCan) CANMET Energy Technology Centre - Varennes (CETC-Varennes) in collaboration with
the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Renewable Energy and Energy
Efficiency Partnership (REEEP), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Global
Environment Facility (GEF)

Project implementation goals:

Our target here is to estimate the cost and investment over a long period of time by using the
software, RETscreen International. This is Renewable Energy Project analysis software. Also the financial
viability of renewable energy will be evaluated for our useful reference.
The project area is considered to be in Kuakata, Potuakhali. Below I provide the summary of the project:
Project Name: Photovoltaic project
Project Location: Kuakata, Potuakhali
Nearest location for weather data: Calcutta/Alipore
Estimated local power requirement: Daily average-62.3 kWh, Annual-22739.5kWh
Daily Average: 62.3 kWh (DC)
Annual average: 22739.5 kWh (DC)
Project Duration analysis for: 30 years
Here the entire load in the area is considered as DC load and calculated as per the DC supply
measurement from the PV system. The total investment is calculated considering the Feasibility study,
Structural development cost, Engineering and the purchase of Equipments and maintenance cost.
Project plan is designed for 30 year of duration.

Data analysis:

Figure-2: Solar resources and system load (Daily average-91.1 kWh, Annual-33,251 kWh)

Discussion:
1. Battery must be replaced every 10 years. So there is extra cost after every 10 years other
than the initial install cost.
2. Load may vary during any part of the day.
3. GHG analysis sheet is used.
4. The nearest location location in this software was used Calcutta. Weather data of the
project location would give much realistic result.
