THREE QUALIFY TO 2006 FIFA WOMENS U-20s

The USA, Canada and the host Mexico qualified to the FIFA Womens
Under-20 World Championship in Russia later this year after finishing
in the top three at the 2006 CONCACAF Tournament held in Crdoba
& Veracruz from 18-27 January.
The USA captured their first CONCACAF Womens U-20 Title after a 3:2 victory over Canada in the 2006 Final at the Estadio Luis Pirata Fuentes in Veracruz,
Mexico on 27 January.
With both teams already qualified to the FIFA event, the stars & stripes took
an early lead in the CONCACAF finale thanks to an eighth minute strike by Amy
Rodriguez. Aysha Jamani tied it for the maple leafs in the 56th minute.
Jodi-Ann Robinson gave Canada a 2:1 advantage on 60 minutes but Jessica
Rodstedt leveled the match for the USA 12 minutes later.
Lauren Cheney scored the game-winner for the stars & stripes in the 81st
minute, ending the maple leafs nine-game winning streak in CONCACAF
Womens Youth Qualification.
In an earlier encounter on 27 January, Mexico gained the Confederations
final berth to the 2006 FIFA Womens U-20 World Championship after defeating
Jamaica 4:1 in the CONCACAF Tournaments Third-Place game at the Estadio
Luis Pirata Fuentes.
The tricolores opened the scoring 19 minutes into the match with an own
goal by the reggae girlz Christina Murray, but Venicia Reid tied it in the 33rd.
Nancy Gandarilla gave Mexico a 2:1 lead two minutes into the second half
and then Vernica Charlyn Corral, added to her tournament leading eight goals,
with scores in the 68th and 90th minutes, respectively, for the 4:1 final score.

CANADAS LANG SCORES FASTEST GOAL IN TOURNAMENT HISTORY

Having not played in Canadas first two Group A matches, Kara Lang made an immediate impact for
the team in their third encounter against Mexico on 22 January scoring the fastest goal in the history
of CONCACAF Womens Youth Qualification, just four seconds into the match at the Estadio Luis
Pirata Fuentes in Veracruz.
After the initial kickoff, Lang took a one touch pass and then hammered a shot from midfield that
sailed over the head of the Mexican goalkeeper Anjuli Ladron De Guevara into the back of the net.

2006 CONCACAF CHAMPIONS CUP BEGINS IN FEBRUARY

The 2006 CONCACAF Champions Cup
kicks-off this month with eight teams
from across the region competing for
the title of CONCACAFs top club.
Four-time Champions Cup winner
Club Amrica of Mexico will meet
Caribbean Champion Portmore United
FC of Jamaica, who are making their
first appearance in the tournament.
Making their second appearance at
the annual CONCACAF event, the USAs
New England Revolution will play twotime CONCACAF Champion LD
Alajuelense of Costa Rica.
Another quarterfinal series has CD
Toluca of Mexico, who have won the
Quarterfinal Series
First-leg: 22-23 February
Second-leg: 8 March

Champions Cup on two previous ocasions, facing another double winner of

the CONCACAF event, CD Olmpia of
Honduras.
The final tournament pairing has
the three-time winners Deportivo
Saprissa from Costa Rica taking on the
Los Angeles Galaxy of the USA.
Saprissa is also the defending CONCACAF Champion, while the Galaxy are
the last USA club to have won the
Champions Cup (2000).
The winners of the quarterfinals,
which take place over two games on a
home-and-away basis, will advance to
the Champions Cup Semifinal Series

scheduled for 21-23 and 28-30 March.

The Semifinal Series victors will
play for the 2006 CONCACAF
Champions Cup on 11-13 & 18-20 April,
with the winner also qualifying to the

Runner-up will be one of the three
CONCACAF invitees to the 2006 Copa
Nissan Sudamericana.
The CONCACAF Champions Cup
is the longest running international
club competition in the region and
has crowned the champion club of
the Confederation since its inception
in 1962.

1938 WORLD CUP VET

The annual event staged by the
Asociacin de Ftbol de Cuba, honours
the countrys best players of the year
(Men Lester Mor; Women Niurka
Cuesta) and also commemorates the
first-ever football match played on the
island between local clubs CD Hatuey
and Rovers AC on 11 December 1911.
The ex-forward Tuas, who is now
88 and currently resides in Mexico,
was presented with the award of
Gloria del Deporte Cubano (Cuban
Sports Glory).
This award is a great honour for
me as I receive this in my native
country where they have enormous
football potential, said Tuas, who
helped Cuba to their only World Cup
appearance in 1938.
As one of the many activities during the Da del Futbolista, Tuas,
made the honorary kickoff before
Ciudad de La Habana defeated
Granma 1:0 in a 2005 Campeonato
Nacional de Ftbol league match at La
Habanas Estadio Pedro Marrero.
Tuas, who scored one goal and
played in all three World Cup matches,
helped Cuba to the quarterfinals after
eliminating Romania by a score of 2:1
in the replay match on 9 June 1938 in
Toulouse, after the teams earned a 3:3
tie in the first round encounter played
in the same venue four days earlier.
The cubanos were eliminated by
Sweden (8:0) in the quarterfinals in
Antibes, France on 12 June 1938, but
Cubas victory over Romania would be
first by a CONCACAF team in a World
Cup held in Europe.
After France 1938, Tuas played
professionally with Real Club Espaa
(MEX) winning league championships
in 1941-42 and 1944-45, seasons.

APPOINT COACHES
Canada and Costa Rica last month
appointed their respective coaches for
the inaugural CONCACAF Beach Soccer
Qualifying Tournament where two
teams will progress to the 2006 FIFA
Beach Soccer World Cup scheduled to
be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in
November.
Futsal coach Ross Ongaro will lead
Canada into the sands of Rio de
Janeiro, while Mirta Brito De La Cuesta
is in charge of Costa Rica as she
becomes the first woman to coach a
mens squad in the Federations history.
Both teams join Cayman Islands,
Jamaica, Mexico and USA at the CONCACAF qualifying tournament which
will take place from 5-9 March alongside South Americas (CONMEBOL) sixteam Beach Soccer Qualification event
in Rio de Janeiro.
The top two from each
Confederations group (CONCACAF &
CONMEBOL) will not only progress to
the 2006 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup,
but will also claim a place in the tournaments semifinals where they will

compete for a spot in the final which

will crown an overall champion for the
CONCACAF and CONMEBOL event on
the 12 March.
This years 16-team FIFA Beach
Soccer World Cup is the second tournament to be held; the inaugural event
took place in May 2005 at the
Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro,
where France defeated Portugal in the
final on penalties after a 3:3 draw in
regulation and overtime periods.

PUMAS UNAM LOSES ON PENALTIES IN COPA

SUDAMERICANA FINAL
Pumas UNAM (MEX) were beaten 4:3 on penalty kicks by Boca
Juniors (ARG) in the final of the 2005 Copa Nissan Sudamericana at
the Estadio Alberto J. Armando in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 18
December, 2005.
The encounter went to penalty kicks after Final Series was tied at 2:2 on
aggregate when the second-leg in Buenos Aires ended in 1:1. Martn Palermo
gave Boca Juniors a 1:0 lead in the 31st minute but Bruno Marioni scored the
equaliser via a penalty kick in the 54th minute of the second half.
Roberto Abbondanzieri, Marcelo Delgado, Federico Insa and Rolando Schiavi
all scored in the penalty shootout, while
Palermo and Guillermo Barros Schelotto missed
the target for Boca Juniors. Meanwhile, Pumas
UNAM got goals from Martn Cardetti, Bruno
Marioni and Gonzalo Pineda, but Leandro
Augusto and Joaqun Beltrns shots were saved
and Gerardo Galindos kick hit the goal post.
This was the first time in the brief history of
the Copa Nissan Sudamericana that a CONCACAF club has reached the final. Pumas UNAM
are also the first Mexican club since CDSC Cruz

CONCACAF XXV CONGRESS TO TAKE

PLACE IN MUNICH, GERMANY
The XXV Ordinary CONCACAF
Congress will be held in Munich,
Germany on 5 June, just days before
the FIFA Congress and the start of the
2006 World Cup. It will be the first
time that any CONCACAF Congress has
taken place outside of the confederations own borders.
Attendees will include delegates
from each of CONCACAFs 40 member
nations along with invited guests from
the global football family.
TIGRES UANL & CD GUADALAJARA
ADVANCE TO COPA LIBERTADORES
Tigres UANL and CD Guadalajara
advanced as two of the three Mexican
club representatives to the 2006 Copa
Libertadores after eliminating CF
Monterrey and Veracruz, respectively,
in the InterLiga (Prelibertadores)
Finals in Carson, California USA on 15
January.
The eight-team tournament concluded at the Carsons Home Depot

Center when, for a second consecutive

year, Tigres UANL and CD Guadalajara
earned the allotted Mexican spots, 2
and 3, respectively, to the Copa
Libertatores. Tigres UANL and CD
Guadalajara join Pumas UNAM, which
previously claimed the Mexico 1 berth,
to the 2006 CONMEBOL event.
Tigres UANL will compete in Group 4
of the 2006 Copa Libertadores Second
Round, which begins next month, along
side Corinthians (BRA), Deportivo Cali
(COL) and Universidad Catlica (CHI),
while Pumas UNAM is in Group 6 that
has Internacional (BRA), Nacional (URU)
and Unin A. Maraciabo (VEN).
CD Guadalajara has to play a Homeand-Away First Round Series against
Colo Colo (CHI) on 24 & 31 January, for
a berth into the Copa Libertadores
Second Round Group 1, which includes
Caracas FC (VEN), Cienciano (PER) and
Sao Paulo FC (BRA).
PANAMA NAMES MARIO KEMPES AS
NEW TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
Former 1978 World Cup Champion
Mario Kempes of Argentina was named
the new technical director of Panama
on 29 December 2005.

Kempes scored two of his countrys

six tournament goals in the 1978 FIFA
World Cup and helped Argentina claim
the title for the first time in history.
The 51-year-old Kempes replaces
Jose Hernandez as canaleros coach.
CAYMAN ISLANDS HOST FIFA COURSE
Cayman Islands hosted the FIFA
Futuro III Administration &
Management Instructors Course from
12-18 December 2005.
The aim of the course was to educate member association instructors in
coaching, refereeing, sports medicine,
administration and management.
GUYANA STAGES COURSE & SEMINAR
Over fifty participants took part in
a CONCACAF Match Commissioners
Course and a Sports Medicine Seminar
on 20 and 21 January, respectively,
staged by the Guyana Football
Federation (GFF).
The Match Commissioners Course
had CONCACAF Director of Development
Richard Braithwaite and GFF President
Colin Klass as the instructors on 20
January, while Dr. Terence Babwah conducted the seminar on Sports Medicine
and Treatment of Injuries the next day.
