Dear Family,

Today my class started the Multiplication and Division chapter. I will be

learning how to multiply and divide by 0, 1, 3, and 4. I will also learn about the
Identity and Zero Properties of Multiplication and how to identify extra or
missing information in problems. Here are my vocabulary words that I will be using
during my lessons.
Love,
p.s. Look on the back of this letter to find some quick practice tips that we can
do together in the car along with an activity and books for us to read at home.

Vocabulary
inverse operations: operations that undo each other
8 3 = 24 so, 24 8 = 3
decompose: to break apart a factor into smaller parts
56 = 50 + 6
known fact: a fact that you already have memorized
Identity Property of Multiplication: The property that states when any number is
multiplied by 1, the product is that number.
Zero Property of Multiplication: The property that states when any number is
multiplied by zero, the product is 0.
quotient: the answer to a division problem
12 3 = 4
quotient

At Home Activity
Materials: 12 circles

Cut 12 circles out of construction pap

er.
Ask: How many circles are there in all?
How many groups of 3 can you make?
How many groups of 4 can you make?
If you take 3 away, how many groups
of
3 can you make?
Continue dividing bY different num
bers
and groups.

Travel Talk
Practice your basic
multiplication facts for 0, 1,
3, and 4. Also, have your
students name the related
division fact for each.
Decompose larger numbers
into smaller numbers to find
known facts.
For example: 4 25 breaks
into 4 (20 + 5).

Books to Read

Estimada familia:

Materiales: 12 crculos

Recorten 12 crculos de cartulina.

Pregunta: Cuntos crculos hay en
total?
Cuntos grupos de 3 se pueden forma
r?
Cuntos grupos de 4 se pueden forma
r?
Si se quitan 3, cuntos grupos de 3
se
pueden formar?
Sigan dividiendo entre diferente

nmeros y grupos.

Practiquen operaciones
bsicas de multiplicacin
con 0, 1, 3 y 4. Adems,
pida al estudiante que diga
la operacin de divisin
relacionada para cada una.
Descompongan nmeros
