Steps To Write An Impactful Resume:: Planning The Resume Selecting The Right Format
The Resume should have clear, legible and simple formats. Avoid too many colors, lines
and sketches.
The advisable font size is 9-11, with fonts 'Times New Roman', Arial, 'Verdana.'
For freshers, a one-pager is often sufficient. Use more space only when there is genuine
extra content to mention.
Typically a .doc resume file is needed. Although .pdf is also acceptable. The size of
resume should not be more than 100KB.
Dont give funky names such as Abhishek_Smart.doc to your resume. Its not
intended for marital purposes. Name it like Abhishek_Shukla.doc or Abhishek_JSS.doc.
Much like name of resume, it is suggested to keep a sober mail id for professional
purposes. Hence a [email protected] is much better than
[email protected] for resume purposes.
Keep a copy of the resume sent to a company and tag it with the companys name. This
is important as we keep on updating the resume and sometimes previous versions may
be needed to know what was communicated to a specific company.
Ironically the entries made in the objective are typically quite the opposite of the
very title. Consider the objective "I aim to work with a dynamic and growth
oriented company which provides a competitive yet nurturing environment and hone
my skills and abilities. - This is useless written piece because it gives the potential
recruiters no specific idea about the goals and interest of the applicant.
The objective should be clearly defined, facts driven and succinct. A standard way to
write such an objective is to mention the role and the industry of interest. Examples
of a well written objective are:
Aim to work in the field of VLSI as a machine language architect.
Interested in the role of site engineer in a power generation organization of repute.
Want to work in the field of Software Sales in a Multinational IT Company.
Educational Qualification
As a fresh college graduate, educational details are often the only major
credentials for the candidate. Therefore this aspect should be with all the critical
details such as: Year, Institution, Marks, Subjects and (Position if presentable.)
Give details of semester/year wise marks distribution as well in reverse
chronological order.
Work Experience
As a entry-level applicant, one would not have full-time work-experience to mention. But its very
important to describe projects, internships and summer training. Emphasize on the exact work and
learning in the assignment, instead of company size and location. An example of a well written work
detail could be : I worked as Software Engineering Trainee in the Design Department of Honda. I
used CAD & CAM software to assist the Line manager in the simulation process. Having spent over 300
hours on design, simulation and analysis, I was given appreciation certificate for my diligent work.
Achievements
If you have varied and rich experiences, categorize your achievements in to suitable
subtitles: Academic, Sports ,Cultural & Positions etc.
Mentioning too many things is not required. Just mention things which add value to
your resume.
In any achievement, if applicable, write in the Context>Process>Impact format.
Such as :
Finance Head, Engineering Society
Was responsible for overall budgeting and sponsorship generation for college
events in a year.
Generated over 15 Lacs INR through aggressive sponsorship support campaign,
and managed a total of 26 Lacs INR for over 35 events of the college in the year
2008-09.
Mention facts and describe the process, instead of putting too many adjectives.
One has to understand the difference between hobbies, time-pass (read leisure) and
time-killing activities. It is advised not put generic activities such as: walking,
talking to friends, watching TV and sleeping as your hobby. Write something if it
adds value else simply put In my leisure time I enjoy watching TV. Although I
would suggest to not putting anything in case you dont have a genuine hobby to
write.
At the end remember: Resume writing is NOT about how believable we can present
what we are not, its about how impactful we can present what we are.
