Teaching Suggestions
1. Review Equivalent Fractions - Remind students that fractions with different
numerators and denominators can be equal to each other in size. Demonstrate by
drawing two identical rectangles and dividing one into halves
and the other into fourths. Color one half of each rectangle and
show that 1/2 = 2/4.
2. Model the Sorting Activity - If possible, demonstrate Equivalent
Fraction Sorting using a document camera or in small groups.
Explain the steps on the student direction page, one at a time.
3. Partner Sorting Activity - When your students are ready, assign
partners and provide time for them to play on their own. You
can have them check their answers with the answer key if
necessary, but since they are using visual models, the answer key
might not be necessary.

Partner Directions
1. Shuffle the penguin fraction cards and
place them on the right side of the
board with the number fractions face
up and the fraction bars face down.
2. Partner A picks up the top card and
names the fraction. Then Player A flips
over the card, looks at the fraction bar,
and compares it to the ones on the
board to find the equivalent fraction.
3. Partner A places the card in the correct
box with the fraction bar face up and says a fraction sentence to explain.
For example, Two-fourths is equivalent to one-half. Partner B gives a
thumbs up if he or she agrees, or the two players discuss it and move the
card to the right location.
4. Partner B picks up the next fraction card and repeats the steps. Take
turns until all cards are placed.
Challenge Variation - In step 2, Partner A tries to find the equivalent
fraction without looking at the fraction bar first. He or she places the
fraction in the box and then turns the card over to check.
