LCU
SMALL GROUPS
THE PURPOSE OF LCU IS TO ENABLE ALL TO GROW AS DISCIPLES AND
LEARNERS OF JESUS CHRIST, LEARNING TO LOVE CHRIST (LUKE 14:26,
27, 33), LOVE OTHERS (JOHN 13:34-35), DENY SELF (LUKE 9:20), AND
SERVE OTHERS (MARK 10:42-45).
LCU offers opportunities for growth in these categories. Classes (lecture-based) and groups
(2-12 in size and interactive) are available to expand the intellectual part of our discipleship.
Groups (ongoing and seasonal) are also available to change our hearts and make us
emotionally and relationally healthy. The result of growth will always affect our hands
through serving others in the church and in the community by sharing the Gospel with the lost
and discipling the saved.

He works...

Discipleship or learning occurs in

many ways. God plays the major
role in making disciples. He works in
the hearts of each of us to draw us
into a closer, more vibrant relationship with Him. He loves us, convicts
us and encourages us.

4 Idlewild Baptist Church

He uses...

God also uses others to disciple us.

Through the church, He uses corporate worship and the preaching
and teaching of His word to produce
disciples. He uses Bible Fellowship
classes, books, and resources to
help us grow in truth.

He teaches...

Since a disciple is a learner and we

never come to know everything, we
can conclude that every believer
has opportunities to grow to be
more like Christ. We all have a next
step that we can take to continue
to change.

AWANA PARTNERS WITH PARENTS TO HELP WORK TOWARDS

DEVELOPING SPIRITUALLY STRONG CHILDREN WHO FAITHFULLY
FOLLOW JESUS CHRIST.

CHILDRENS
DISCIPLESHIP
PROGRAM
Who Can Participate?

For children two years old through 5th grade, our AWANA
Club starts its spring semester on Jan. 11, Sundays, 4:30
6:00 p.m. during the school year. There is a program fee
when you register your child. The program is divded into
four clubs for Preschool and school-age kids:

What is AWANA?

Awana is a high energy, fun place for children to learn

more about Gods Word. The goal of Idlewilds Awana
Clubs is to give kids the chance to know, love, and serve
God! Its an exciting approach to teaching Gods Word,
combining learning with irresistible fun to produce
lifelong results in children. In addition to partnering with
parents to help develop spiritually strong children who
faithfully follow Jesus Christ, Awana has a tremendous
reputation for helping kids get Gods Word into the center of their lives. It goes beyond simply memorizing the
verses though. Awana is all about making sure that our
children understand the meaning and, most importantly,
how to apply it to their lives. Awana Clubs are filled with
high energy fun, fellowship, and spiritual growth.

Acts Part 1 - Jesus Witnesses, Empowered by
His Spirit - (Chapters 1-12)
Lukes first account was his Gospel in which he recorded
all that Jesus began to do and teach. His second account
we call Acts, or the Acts of the Apostles, in which Luke
recorded what happened after Jesus ascension to
the Father. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit, empowering
the apostles to testify to the power of God in salvation
and in living every day for the Gospel. Learn how God
spread the Gospel through witnesses of Jesus death
and resurrection, and, from their examples, how you,
too, can witness to others. Stand in awe of the power of
God in believers to endure persecution and suffering for
the cause of Christ and embrace His power in your life.
Be encouraged by the results of faithful servants holding
forth truth in a dark world; watch as the church grows
numerically, geographically, and culturally.

Amazing Collection Gospels & Acts (Set 8)

This set begins with the birth of Jesus Christ and
concludes with the first imprisonment of the apostle
Paul about six decades later. Within these books, God
continues to reveal His sovereign plan. He moves the
emphasis from Israel to the church, from a covenant
of law to a covenant of grace, and from His Holy Spirit
coming upon people to actually indwelling them. These
five books lay the foundation for the letters that comprise
the rest of the New Testament!

12 Idlewild Baptist Church

Amazing Collection Pauls

Letters to Churches (Set 9)
These nine books, Romans through 2 Thessalonians,
begin your study of the epistolary section of the New
Testament. Pauls Letters to the Churches were sent to
seven churches scattered throughout Asia Minor, Greece,
and Rome. These churches were in different stages of
maturity and all needed instruction from the great apostle.
Paul took the truths of life, death, resurrection, and the
return of Jesus Christ and applied them to the believer.
Though each letter has its own flavor and emphasis, each
uniquely continues the great picture of our great God,
with incredible purpose and application for our lives today.

Romans
The Apostle Paul writes to encourage believers about
the power of God through the Gospel and what it truly
means to be justified.Learn how Christs life, death, and
resurrection imparts life to Jews and Gentiles. Join others
in studying how the believers mind is transformed so that
God may be represented gloriously.

Mentor Training
Do you feel ill equipped to mentor or disciple someone
younger in the faith? Are you willing but just dont know
how? Do you think things like How do I find someone
who wants/needs mentoring? What do I teach? Can
I even do this? This training aims to give you the
knowledge and resources you need to effectively live
out the biblical mandate to mentor and disciple with
confidence.

Who is Jesus? From the Truth Project

Join Dr. Del Tackett as he weaves a compelling case for

Christ, walking listeners through the evidence of Jesus

existence. Learn how to defend the Gospel, handle
hard questions, and share your faith with skeptics and
unbelievers.

Made to Crave by Lysa TerKeurst

Discover the missing link between a womans desire to
be healthy and the spiritual empowerment necessary to
make that happen. The reality is that we were made to
crave or desire more of Him in our lives. Many of us have
misplaced that craving through overindulging in physical
pleasures instead of a lasting satisfaction in Him.

What Love is; 1,2,3 John

Kelly Minter says The letters of 1, 2 & 3 John arehow
shall I say thisblunt. Which is one of the reasons Ive
come to love them so much. Sometimes I just need
someone to tell me the truth. Join us in this journey for
truth.

Ordinary Women, Extraordinary God

Need accountability in prayer? This group was created for
women to grow in the discipline of prayer and for enjoying
approaching His throne with compassionate sisters in
Christ.

Life and Times of Jesus

Travel with Judy Melton to the streets that she has walked
as a missionary in Israel. This class will explore life in
Jesus day and how being there beautifully enhances
your understanding of His Word.

Abundant, Faithful & True

Join Priscilla Shirer, Beth Moore and Kay Arthur as they
beautifully blend their teaching for a great study on Gods
character. Kay Arthur teaches from basically, the entire
book of Hebrews. Priscilla Shirer teaches from Ephesians
3:20-21 on Gods abundance. Beth Moore teaches on the
topic of discernment. In these difficult days, it is absolutely
essential that we learn to trust the Holy Spirit to enable us
to determine what is true and what is false.

Gideon by Priscilla Shirer

Study the life of Gideon and find the God-given strength
to face your fears and do what God is calling you to do,
rather than hiding from your weaknesses.

Summer Study: Breathe by Priscilla Shirer

We are in bondage to busyness. We constantly strive to
complete limitless to-do lists that can hinder us enjoying
God. We miss the moments because we rush ahead
to the next thing. It is time for us to breathe as God
intended. Sabbath was His gift to His people, and it is
still a gift to us today. If you are weary, worn out, and
exhausted, the concept of Sabbath will change your life.

SMALL GROUPS
FOR MEN
Precept Upon Precept Inductive Studies
Acts Part 1 - Jesus Witnesses, Empowered by
His Spirit - (Chapters 1-12)
The Gospel of Luke is a walk through events in Jesus
life. Watch how the Son of Man, the Savior, enters the
homes of the suffering, visits tax collectors, and dines
with sinners. Learn from His words, His walk, and His
relationships with common people what it really means to
follow Him. Hear what Jesus taught about the kingdom of
God and how you, today, can be prepared for the difficult
times ahead and to stand before the Son of Man.

Momentum
What is Momentum? We believe God created men to
lead. We also believe many men have slipped into a
state of being passive followers, rather than passionate
leaders. It is now time for men to step up and take
personal responsibility for their spiritual growth. Through
consistent training in the Word of God and small-group
interaction, Momentum provides an opportunity for men
to walk through the struggles and the triumphs of life with
a Band of Brothers. Momentum empowers men to grow
together in Christ, while becoming men of God who are
being conformed to the image of His Son.

BIBLE & THEOLOGY

SMALL GROUPS
The Cults
An examination of the history and doctrines of the cults of
Christianity, examining their doctrinal errors and giving the
doctrinal corrective. An examination of Islam will also be
included. Required Reading: Cults, World Religions, and
the Occult by Kenneth Boa.

Mirages
What appears to be real is actually the slick deception
of false doctrines and teaching. An overview of false
teachings and doctrines infiltrating the evangelical church
in our day. For the time will come when they will not
endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears
tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers
in accordance to their own desires; and will turn away
their ears from the truth, and will turn aside to myths. 2
Timothy 4:3-4.

months. Counselors are available as the class concludes
for participants who choose to discuss spiritual decisions,
make application for membership, schedule baptisms, or
to answer questions. For adults and students, 6th grade
and up. Younger children may stay in Bible Fellowship
classes in the Childrens or Preschool areas as
appropriate for both of the 9:15 and the 11:00 sessions.

ABUNDANT
LIFE GROUPS

Abundant Life groups are small group book studies which

offer Biblical guidance on a variety of topics related to life
issues such as forgiveness, marriage, and relationships.
These groups offer a safe and confidential environment
for participants to experience commonality with other

The 5 Love Languages (Women Tuesday Mornings)

Recovering from the Losses of Life

(Women Tuesday mornings)

Life is marked by a variety of losses, says certified

trauma specialist H. Norman Wright. Some are lifechanging, such as leaving home, the effects of natural
disasters or war, the death of a loved one, or divorce.
Others are subtle, such as changing jobs, moving, or
a broken friendship. But whether readers encounter
family, personal, or community disaster, there is always
potential for change, growth, new insight, understanding,
and refinement. Writing from his own experience, Wright
covers such issues as the meaning of grief, blaming
God, and learning how to express and share in times of
loss. Group is limited to 10 participants. Pre-registration
required.

Surviving Infertility

(Couples Tuesday evenings)

Unfulfilled longing for a child can feel like an impossible
weight to bear. Infertile women and couples can feel
hopeless and angry. They ask, Why God? Why wont
you send us a baby? But there is hope and true
encouragement, and it starts with the Word of God.
Surviving Infertility: What the Bible Says about Your Baby
Hunger is a compassionate guide through the tangle of
emotions and struggles faced by the infertile couple. Using Scripture as a standard, infertile couples can overcome jealousy of other womens pregnancies, build faith
during times of waiting, and find peace in the face of overpowering anxiety. You will gain new strength from a true
study of Gods Word, which will shepherd you through the
monthly, weekly, daily and hourly struggle with infertility.
If you are consumed with baby hunger, its time to hunger for God and what the Bible says about your struggle.
Group is limited to 5 couples. Pre-registration required.

Love & Respect (Couples Thursday evenings)

A wife has one driving needto feel loved. When that
need is met, she is happy. A husband has one driving
needto feel respected. When that need is met, he is
happy. When either of these needs isnt met, things get
crazy. Love and Respect reveals why spouses react
negatively to each other, and how they can deal with such
conflict quickly, easily, and biblically. Group is limited to 5
couples. Pre-registration required.

Parents of Addicted Children

(Coed Monday evenings)

Parents of addicted adult children share a common

struggle in that their lives have been adversely affected
by the actions, attitudes, and behaviors of the adult childs
addiction. These addictions may include drugs, alcohol,
sex, pornography, spending, and food. Addictions dont
just affect the addict, they affect the entire family. Nagging, pleading, enabling, or punishing the one who is
addicted is a common theme. Most parents of addicted
adult children wrongly blame themselves for the addicted
childs behavior. Feelings of hurt, anger, and despair set
in. If you can relate, we invite you to meet with us on
Monday evenings to share your experience and have
others share their lives with you. Spiritual and emotional
encouragement is offered. Meetings are held every Monday evening throughout the year. Pre-registration is not
required.

Spouses L.I.F.E. Guide (Women Monday evenings)

The L.I.F.E. Guide for Spouses is a 28-week study
for spouses of men who have been unfaithful in their
marriage or are battling sexual impurity/addiction. This
workbook-style study is a biblically-based, time-tested,
effective tool in assisting spouses in recovering from
their partners sexual betrayal, whether the spouse is
repentant or not. Introducing a new way of looking at the
participants own recovery and transformation, God uses
what the enemy meant for destruction to bring new life
and hope. Through participation in this group, one enters
a safe support structure with other women on the same

journey. Pre-registration is not required.

The Way of Purity (Men Monday evenings)

Freedom from impurity can be a reality in the life of
anyone who will apply biblical principles. Far more than
explaining how we become enslaved to impurity, or
revealing the addiction process, the purpose of this book
is to bring true freedom to captives. The biblical teachings
presented have been used in the lives of many, setting
them free from bondage. Mike Cleveland, founder and
president of Setting Captives Free, writes, Friend, are
you tired of struggling to become free? I was enslaved to
impurity for 15 years and I know the power it has; but I
also know that the power of Gods grace is stronger than
the pull of sin. I invite you to come and enjoy the freedom
that is in Jesus Christ. Group is limited 10 participants.
Pre-registration is required.
