The document discusses football playcalling strategies, formations, and techniques such as blocking assignments and cadences.

Some of the blocking techniques described include crack, hook, kickout, log, man, pivot, puck, reach, scramble, seal, snow shovel, stalk, track, and trap.

The Hanover-Horton Football Program emphasizes principles like playing as a team, establishing the running game, being disciplined, being prepared, minimizing penalties and turnovers, controlling the ball, setting up plays, making the defense play their game, being dominant, and execution.

NOTE: We walk to & from the huddle (except in RED MODE)

BLOCKING TECHNIQUES
Blocking Technique (one on one blocks)
Crack: Coming back to the formation to pick off pursuer.
Hook: Sealing the contain man (DE) by the TE in order to get outside.
Kickout: Knocking the end man out to run up inside him.
Log: A mobile block (hit and roll) to take out a man you are reach blocking. Also, refers to
the FBs pin block of a slanting DE.
Man: Matching up and taking the man in front of you (count over from center) BOB.
Pivot:Allowing the defender inside you by pivoting on your outside foot then sealing him.
Puck: Dropping to both knees to prevent penetration by a frogging D-lineman.
Reach: Stepping out to get in front of a defender to your outside shoulder.
Scramble: Attacking with a bear crawl movement aiming your head in front of the defender
you are blocking.
Seal: (Usually the center) will seal the backside for the pulling lineman.
Snow Shovel: Straight ahead all four scramble for 4
th
and inches.
Stalk: Receiver or wing blocking a DB by running him down (head in chest).
Track: Blockers path to defenders (miss one get the next.)
Trap: Guards pulling and kicking out DT at point of attack. (POA)
Blocking Techniques ( 2 man combo blocks)
Chip-n-Seal: Semi-double team where outside man hits down man then releases to seal
LB.
Cross Block: Two men switching assignment (me-you) (you-me).
Double Team: Inside man post (head inside.) Outside man drives (head outside.)
Exchange(Fold): (Usually OT & TE) TE down blocks DT, OT loops to seal LB.
Half Man: (Combos) During the double team both men check for scraping LB and
use free arm to pick him off. (At times even coming off the double to take
on LB fullbore)
Blocking Schemes (3 men or more)
PLAY STRATEGY
B B C C
S
S
Base: (Double Down) Odd fronts double teamed Nose and Tackle.
Seven: (Down Blocks) Even fronts are down blocked(rule: head up to outside
eye=yours/inside eye to one man down=mine)
Window: (Wing down) For crashing DEs. Wings will down block, FBs kick out CB.
Tunnel: (Wing out) For DEs who play wide. Wings will seal block (inside out).
Wings on: (Shift) To compensate for multi-men fronts. Wings will shift to L.O.S.
Black: (2 wings on) Both wings start on LOS. The motion wing will shift of on ready.
Green: (1 wing on) Both wing start off LOS. The down (non-motion) wing will shift on
ready.
Wedge: For dives, sneaks, etc. Whole line shoulder to shoulder drive.
Stretch: Outside option play scheme.
Covered-rip & reach to seal LB.
Uncovered-pull & overtake next man to your outside.
Freeze: Dont move! Stay in stance-center=QB tap-sneak.
PP: Dive to crotch to keep hands down for one step pass.
Aggressive: One step forward (sell run), two steps back (inside out protection) 3 step pass.
Gate: Backside center, guard, and tackle form a gate to protect rolling QB.
GOLD: G=Gap, O=On, L=LB blitz, D=Deploy to help.
Cup: For 5-7 step passes, Guards set depth. Tackles set width.
OTF: Off the film blocking.
Pancake: Knock down (as in flat as a)
Toss vs. Even Double Rule: 2

Tackle= Tony
Guard= Goober
2 Men Outside DE: Automatically shift to Wing on/Window (double vs TOSS to even

1: Reverse pivot, pitch ball, seal off CB
QB keeps ball next
to inside hip &
delivers a soft toss.
Doesnt need a
pancake on corner,
just screen him.
The WB should
motion with
shoulders and feet
open towards QB,
& receive pitch at
full speed. Look to
cut back, take it up
the hash, or bounce
it outside.
FBs 1
st
step should
be a crossover step
with his opposite
first foot(in order,
to clear the QB).
FB attack end
inside out.
Backside blocking
is key. Tackle look
for any defenders
leaking through.

This is The Play in
the Toss offense. This
play works on the
mismatch idea, have
more blockers than
defenders at the POA.
The block scheme is
the base technique
versus an odd front.
Against an even front
we double at the POA
based on a call by the
OT.
Against a Double
Eagle we use the
seven technique.

This is a base block where the Nose Guard and DT get double teamed.
VERSUS EVEN FRONT Note: It is an even front if the Center is uncovered.

When the defense is
really keying on the
Toss the Cross-Toss is
designed to soften up
the D. The counter
motion can take
advantage of cheating
LBs.
Stay at home defenses
or slow defenses will
be waiting for this
play, but it still has the
walling effect of the
Toss.
Either way this plays
opens up other areas
of our offense, and
when the defense is
overreacting the
Cross-Toss breaks for
big yards.

2: Motion, fake pitch action carry out run hard to

1: Pivot out with Toss motion fake the 2 handed pitch,
finish turn and give inside handoff to oncoming WB
-Timing is crucial,
you may not to
cheat the wings
alignment slightly
to get the right
timing .
-Backs need to
carry out fakes for
at least 10 yds. QB
should back out
with a pass action
after the hand-off.
-Guard needs to
trap inside out on
DE with head in the
hole. The Tackle
should pull with a
little more depth &
seal Lbers.
-Remember:
Center calls ODD
or Even.
ODD=Base=Doubl

PLAY STRATEGY
B B
C
C
S
S
Once the DE commits
to stopping the TOSS,
the WBs alignment
versus the DE lends
itself to getting
outside.
The Sweep is quicker
developing than a
traditional sweep.
The Sweep also will
help set up our
bootleg or play-action
pass between the QB
& TE. The QB should
watch to see who is
coming out with him
every time.
OFFENSIVE LINEMEN
PT: Scramble block DT
PG: Pull block onside CB
C: Scramble block NG
BG: Pull shallow clean up penetration leaks, continue
to onside safety.
BT: Release inside to LB or 1
st
color
RECEIVERS AND BACKS
6: Post-corner route
5: Down block onside LB
4: Down block onside DE
3: Fake dive action for 10 yds
2: Motion slightly flatter than TOSS, receive hand-off,
locate Guards rear end
1: Reverse out, fake dive, give sweep hand-off, fake
scissors pass
If the DE widens
out the WB can use
the wings on
alignment, or
tunnel to create a
seam similar to the
TOSS, or cheat his
alignment when he
sets.
The ball carrier
needs to read the
Guards block, and
plant his outside to
get up field as soon
as possible. Head
fakes will help set
the Guards block.
The post-corner
route, the QB fakes,
and the fullback
fake are critical in
helping to set up the
CUT, bootleg, and
play-action pass.

The Reverse is a

2: Motion, receive hand-off like SWEEP, give to WB,

1: Pivot out with SWEEP motion hand-off to

QB could trail the

Fullback should run

After we have been
pounding the defense
outside with the Toss
& Sweep, it is time to
cut them up the middle
with the CUT play.
Often times the D-
Linemen start
overpenetrating and
take themselves out of
the play.
As the Lbers follow
the motion, the FB
tends to get lost in his
tight alignment.

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN
PT: Backside LB or down block
PG: Drive double team on Nose & chip off to offside LB
C: Post double team on Nose
BG: Trap inside out on DT or DE if DT goes too deep
BT: Down field-aim for onside safety
RECEIVERS AND BACKS
6: Post corner route (read where defenders are)
5: Seal onside LB
4: Block CB or outside backer
3: Jab step away, receive hand-off, cut behind
trapping Guard
2: Motion, fake Sweep for 10 yds
1: Reverse out, give hand-off, continue fake Sweep,
continue with fake Scissors pass
Once again the
fakes are crucial to
keep our bootleg
and play action
passes open.
The trapping Guard
should not be
surprised if the DT
& DE take
themselves out of
the play, so be
ready to turn it
upfield and pick up
a DB.
Linemen should
remember to chip
off to backers if the
DL take themselves
out of the play.
FB be patient and
let the guard set up
his block.

After we have spread
out the defense with
our Toss, Sweep, X-

The Blast is another
play which keeps the
defense guessing.

This play is obviously
run off the Toss Action.
We will keep
pounding them until
the DBs start coming
up to stop the Toss.
This is not a 3
rd
and
long play. The defense
will be looking for it.
We run this play while
our running game is
clicking.
Our fakes throughout
the game is what sets
up this play.

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN
PT: Aggressive Pivot Pass Block
PG: Aggressive Pivot Pass Block
C: Aggressive Pivot Pass Block
BG: Aggressive Pivot Pass Block
BT: Aggressive Pivot Pass Block
RECEIVERS AND BACKS
6: Aggressive Pivot Pass Block
5: Curl route, find open spot
4: Flag route
3: Fake Toss kick out, flat route
2: Motion, fake TOSS Action, block DE
1: Reverse out, fake Toss, set, pass (look from long to
short)
QB hide the ball on
your outside hip, as
you complete the
half roll watch for
the patterns to
develop.
QB always reads
from deep to short,
keep an eye on the
CB. If he is coming
up hard the flag
route should be
open.
The FBs flat route
is always open lead
to the sideline.
Good fakes will
help sell this play.
If the pass isnt
there, the QB can
keep it and get what
he can or throw to
the outside where
only our guys have
a chance.

This is why we work
so hard on our fakes.
Our QB shows his
normal sweep motion
that he has been doing
all game. But when
the defense stops
honoring the fakes we
are in position to pass
or the QB has the
option to keep.
This play works well
against Lbers who
really read the guards.
Note: the word FAR
means the TE away
from the hole runs a
route. The NEAR boot
is where the TE near
the hole will run the
route.

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN
PT: Scramble, Cut block DT
PG: Pull away, fill for BG
C: Scramble, Cut block NG
BG: Pull away, seal off DE
BT: Scramble DT
RECEIVERS AND BACKS
6: Post-corner Route (like Sweep)
5: Scramble DE
4: Fake block on CB
3: Fake dive like sweep, fill if LB comes
2: Motion, fake Sweep Action, carry out fake 10 yds
1: Reverse out, fake Sweep, roll away find TE
On the Sweep the
QB and TE should
be reading who is
staying home with
them, so now they
know what to
expect.
The QB should 1
st

read the DE. If the
DE reads the boot,
the QB should pull
up early and throw.
The QB should roll
deep and read the
CB. If the CB has
come up the TE
should be open, or
if the CB is deep
the QB should
head up field but be
ready to quick pass
if the CB comes up.

Another pass off the
Toss which is great
when the defense
stacks the LOS. Good
to use 3

BG: PP pass block

5: PP pass block
4: Down block DE
3: Block right
2: Motion, Fake Toss for 10 yds
1: ! rotate, set, pass firm but not a bullet
PP blocking refers
to diving straight
ahead at the crotch
of the defender to
get their hands
down.
The TE should vary
his pattern to find a
clear area.
The QB needs to
rotate quickly and
set his feet.
If the pass is not
there do not force it.
Throw the ball into
the bench.

Remember, when we
run our Sweep and Cut
plays the TE & QB are
observing the DBs to
see if they are honoring
the fake.
Once the DBs start
leaving the fake alone
we are ready to hit
them with our Scissors
pass.

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN
PT: Pivot block
PG: Pull deep and seal the DE
C: Gate block
BG: Gate block
BT: Gate block
RECEIVERS AND BACKS
6: Drag behind backers
5: Corner route
4: Motion, block backside DE (join the Gate)
3: Fake dive (fill if needed) flat route under backers
2: Seam route
1: Fake dive, fake sweep, roll wide, set, read deep to
short
Must block as a
team. The Gate
cant create
openings. Keep
shoulder pads tight.
The PG needs to get
rear end pointing at
QB.
FB fill on LB if he
blitzes
QB get wide quick
(find Guards rear to
set up behind) and
look deep first. The
backside seam route
is usually wide
open but takes a
strong arm.
Sometimes, it is
enough to just
throw it deep and
let the WB run
under it.

COMET FOOTBALL
We will play as a team, win as a team, lose as a team, practice as a team, live as a team, work
as a team, have fun as a team. The game of football is not built around one man or a few men.
It revolves around everyone working together as one. In order to succeed we must follow a
few principles which the Hanover-Horton Football Program is built on.
OFFENSIVE GOALS
1. Create a mismatch at the point of attack (POA).
2. Establish the Running Game.
3. Be disciplined.
4. Be prepared.
5. Minimize penalties and turn-overs.
6. Control the ball.
7. Set-up series of plays.
8. Make the defense play our game.
9. Be Dominant.
10.Execution.
EFFORT
The most important job
that a player has is to
go, with as much effort
as his heart can
possibly summon from
his body.
GET BETTER,
thats our goal. Every day when we
walk on the field our goal is get
better. Get better at something. It
may seem like a little thing, an
assignment, a technique, a step, a
throw, a catch, a block, a tackle or
an attitude, but champions are
always striving to!
GET BETTER.
FAITH
We work together every single day.
You have come to believe in the
staff, have faith in the staff, and
even depend on the staff. And all
we want is to do all that we can to
let you know...
YOU WERE RIGHT.
COMMITMENT
Only 1 team gets to win the
championship. But
champions are made when
teams commit themselves
totally toward winning the
championship.
PRIDE
Take pride in your
school, team, family,
and giving 100% at
everything you do.
FUN
Whatever we do
remember its a
game.
Lets Have Fun
