    Hazards of DSE

    Employee may suffer from aches and pains as a result of poor posture, poor
    designed workstation or prolonged use.
    Eye discomfort or headache may also be caused by poor lighting or screen image,
    or prolonged use.

    Control measures of DSE:-
    Practical controls: include the selection and provision of suitable
    equipment, software and eyesight tests.
    Management controls: include the provision of information, training and
    task design.

    Hazards and control measures of manual handling:-

    The hazards of manual handling:-
    Lifting a load which is too heavy or too cumbersome, resulting in back
    injury.
    Poor posture during lifting or poor lifting technique, resulting in back injury.
    Dropping a load, resulting in foot injury.
    Lifting sharp-edged or hot loads resulting in hand injuries.


    The control of measure:-
    Reduce the amount of twisting, stooping and reaching
    appropriate equipment, such as lifts, fork-lifts, trolleys, hoists, conveyors, etc.,
    should be used
    Avoid lifting from floor level or above shoulder height, especially heavy loads
    Adjust storage area to minimise the need to carry out such movements
    Consider how you can minimise carrying distances
    Assess the weight to be carried and whether the worker can move the load safely
    or needs any help maybe the load can be broken down to smaller, lighter
    components.


    if you need to use lifting equipment
    Consider whether you can use a lifting aid, such as a forklift truck, electric
    or hand-powered hoist, or a conveyor
    Think about storage as part of the delivery process maybe heavy items
    could be delivered directly, or closer, to the storage area.
    Reduce carrying distances where possible
    Good handling techniques for lifting:
    Think before lifting/handling. plan the lift
    Adopt a stable position
    Get a good hold
    Start in a good posture
    Dont flex the back any further while lifting
    Keep the load close to the waist
    Avoid twisting the back or leaning sideways, especially while the back is
    bent
    Keep the head up when handling
    Move smoothly
    Dont lift or handle more than can be easily managed
    Put down, then adjust.

    Hazards and control measures of manually-operated moving equipment
    Hazards
    Incurrent use such as over loading or attempting to carry unstable loads.
    Pushing or pulling a truck or trolley is still a manual handling operation can
    create different kinds of risks.
    Lack of maintenance.
    Control measures:-
    A safe system of work in place.
    Adequate visibility and lighting available.
    The floors in a stable condition.
    Regular maintenance schedule for the equipment.

    Irish:-
    The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work, (General Application) Regulations 2007,
    Chapter 5 of Part 2 outline the requirements that must be adhered to in relation to
    Display Screen Equipment.
    UK:-
    The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992
    EU:-
    Directive 90/270/EEC - display screen equipment.

    Irish/UK/EU/International Manual legislation/regulations/standards, etc.
    Irish:
    The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work, (General Application) Regulations 2007,
    Chapter 4 of Part 2, outline the requirements that must be adhered to in relation to
    manual handling.
