Should you be elected, what are three specific areas youd like to change, address, improve or further research, and how specifically would you go about it?:
My goals for the court include making appellate justice more readily accessible to everyone, while tackling and revising the courts failed management policies and practices. We must improve transparency in court operations, including budgeting, resource management, and case management. The 11 th District Court of Appeals should be the best of the 12 appellate courts in the state, not one of the worst.
We must attempt to establish local rules that allow more people to appeal a case to the court of appeals and handle the appeal themselves, so they wont incur excessive attorneys fees.
We must post the courts budget and case management records on the courts web site for access by everyone. We must improve the web site, one of the worst in the state, so the public can access and meaningfully review all publicly available information from the court. The court belongs to the public, not just the lawyers who appear before the court.
We must substantially reduce the time it takes for cases to wind their way through the court on the way to a final decision. The public is entitled to timely handling of their appeals. This can be accomplished by better managing available resources.
We must substantially reduce the percentage of our districts appellate decisions that are reversed by the Ohio Supreme Court. This can be accomplished by properly applying the law rather than attempting to rewrite the law.
Whether for past accomplishments or future goals, why should voters elect you?
I have 31 years of legal experience exclusively devoted to trials and appeals. My experience handling cases in trial courts and appeals courts in 40 states and 10 foreign countries provides broader depth of experience than any candidate ever seeking election to the 11 th District Court of Appeals. The scope of litigation and appellate matters I have handled during my career is also broader than that of any other candidate, and includes civil cases and criminal cases in state and federal courts, complex civil cases (including class actions) in state and federal courts, complex federal agency investigations, and pro bono legal services for the disadvantaged. I have the added advantage of managing a comprehensive legal department budget at The Sherwin Williams Company, where I worked for 26 years before retiring, ultimately managing the Companys domestic general litigation and appeals. I also have other valuable business management experience, all of which imminently adds to my qualifications. I believe in a conservative interpretation of the Constitution, particularly respecting the Second Amendment. My successful record as a married father of six children with strong family values, a community leader, and a three term elected public official also add to my qualifications. I am seeking the opportunity to apply for the benefit of everyone in our district my core family and community values, strong work ethic, broad legal experience, sound business experience, and vision for a better court. Thank you.
