different people at different times in different ways. We communicate with our family,

friends, people at work, and people we meet socially or professionally. At times, we may
even need to communicate with a larger audience such as members of the public. Some
purposes of communication are: To inquire: This involves obtaining information in various ways, for instance, by
asking questions or through formulating questionnaires.
To inform: This entails the dissemination of information using different channels
of communication.
To persuade: This aims to influence people and bring them round to your way of
thinking.
To develop goodwill: This involves maintaining and forming cordial and
harmonious relationships with people you are communicating.

2.0 Speech as a Communication Medium

Not everyone is born speaker. But everyone has the ability to develop effective oral
communication skills. We may be asked to speak at school assembly, to make a farewell
speech, to thank a visiting guest or to propose a toast. Within our life time to owe will
hopefully be making speeches in almost any occasion. A natural approach, and a pleasing
tone of voice will endear us and our audience. An effective speaker should makes
listeners feel valued and appreciated, has the power to keep the listeners attention, to
make the listener think and to sway the listener opinions. A good speaker should believe
in himself and this gives others the confidence to believe in him, then, it would embrace
the public speaking with a positive attitude. Speeches are made for different purposes.
They may be made to persuade, inform or entertain an audience. Originality and a fresh
approach will inspire our audience. The successful communicators are enthusiastic,
energetic and passionate about their subjects. The speaker should be able to motivate the
listeners if they have interest, knowledge and belief in the subject under discussions. It is
