This document provides instructions for using geothermal system cost estimation software developed by the University of Alabama. The software allows users to estimate installation costs for geothermal HVAC systems by providing cost data for components like exterior piping, interior piping, and vertical loop fields. The program is organized into multiple sheets for different system components. Users input parameters and the software calculates material and labor costs to help identify high cost areas for redesign. The goal is to lower system costs and increase the market potential of geothermal HVAC.

Welcome to the first version of the geothermal estimating software created by The University of Alabama through ASHRAE contra
This software is intended for the purpose of helping design engineers determine and lower the cost of installing geothermal H to target high cost areas for redesign, thereby giving geothermal systems greater marketing potential.
Instructions This software is catagorized into (4) different sheets: Sheet 1-Exterior Headers, Sheet 2 Headers sheet is used to calculate the cost of installing HDPE geothermal pipe on the exterior of the design project buildin etc. The Interior HDPE Piping sheet is used to calculate the cost of installing HDPE pipe as the building's interior piping n etc. The Vertical Loop Cost sheet is used to calculate the cost of drilling and installing the vertical geothermal loop field all previous sections and graphically represent the cost of each sub-section for quick analysis and easy targeting of high cost software computations and should not concern the user. All input perameter cells are shaded yellow and only these cells should be changed by the user. All other cells are using the password "HVAC". Some input cells (yellow cells) have drop down selection menus that appear on the screen once the selections listed in the drop down cell will be accepted and for other cells the user my enter values other than those sugges To begin the program, the user my select the blue arrows to the left of this screen to forward to the Exterior Headers Each sheet contains a "Home" button that will return the user to the start sheet. For more detailed instructions, please see "Misc. Calculators" sheets. All information entered should be saved to a separate file under a new file name by the user so that this "blank" file www.geokiss.com and download this program again. This software developed through the expertise of: Steve P. Kavanaugh, Ph.D. , Professor of Mechanical Engineering, University of Alabama Welcome to the first version of the geothermal estimating software created by The University of Alabama through ASHRAE contract 1217-TRP under TC 6.8. This software is intended for the purpose of helping design engineers determine and lower the cost of installing geothermal HVAC systems by giving the engineer the cost data necessary to target high cost areas for redesign, thereby giving geothermal systems greater marketing potential. Exterior Headers, Sheet 2-Interior HDPE Piping, Sheet 3-Vertical Loop Cost, and Sheet 4-Cost Summary. The Exterior Headers sheet is used to calculate the cost of installing HDPE geothermal pipe on the exterior of the design project building and includes the cost of burying pipe, building penetrations, etc. The Interior HDPE Piping sheet is used to calculate the cost of installing HDPE pipe as the building's interior piping network and includes fittings, hangers, heat pump connections, etc. The Vertical Loop Cost sheet is used to calculate the cost of drilling and installing the vertical geothermal loop field. Last, the Cost Summary sheet is used to summarize the cost of section for quick analysis and easy targeting of high cost areas. The Miscellaneous Cost sheet is intended for All input perameter cells are shaded yellow and only these cells should be changed by the user. All other cells are locked and may not be changed without unlocking each sheet using the password "HVAC". Some input cells (yellow cells) have drop down selection menus that appear on the screen once the cell has been selected. For some cells, only the selections listed in the drop down cell will be accepted and for other cells the user my enter values other than those suggested in the drop down menu. To begin the program, the user my select the blue arrows to the left of this screen to forward to the Exterior Headers sheet or by choosing the tabs at the bottom of this screen. Each sheet contains a "Home" button that will return the user to the start sheet. If you accidentally overwrite the program, revisit www.geokiss.com and redownload this program. B13: Enter the grade of HDPE pipe desired for this job. B16-28: Enter the total linear footage of HDPE pipe, supply and return, of each size needed to complete the piping from the building to the bore field and any subsequent field piping required to distribute flow to each well. All well field piping should be included in this section with the exception of the vertical u-tube pipe which will be included in the "Vert. Loop" sheet, Section 10. C16-28: Enter the total number of 90 elbows needed for all bore field piping, supply and return. Enter the total number of tees needed for all bore field piping, supply and return. Section 2: Close Headers Section 2.1: Direct Return B35,C35,D35: When each cell is selected, a pull down menu arrow will appear. Select the arrow for a listing of options for socketed or butt fused headers. B36,C36,D36: The user should input the desired number of headers of similar configuration under Header 1. IF more than one configuration of header is required, the user should then input the number of sub- sequent headers under Header 2, and if necessary, again under Header 3. B37,C37,D37: When each cell is selected, a pull down menu arrow will appear. Select the arrow for a listing of options for inlet and outlet header pipe size configurations. Note that the sizes are in inches. B38,C38,D38: The user should input the desired number of outlets for each header. Note that the 1-1/4" inlet x 1" outlet header can have no more than 6 outlets and that the 2" inlet x 1" outlet can have no fewer than 7 outlets. If any other combination is chosen, the resulting totals will give "Error in Outlets" message in B39, C39 and D39 cells. Simple rechoose an appropriate combination to delete error messages and continue with appropriate calculations. Section 2.2: Reverse Return This section is still under construction. Section 3: Excavation & Backfill Section 3.1: Loader/Backhoe A51: This cell has been limited to the selection of 3ft, 4ft, or 5ft depths. Either enter the number directly into the cell or select the drop down menu for this cell and choose the appropriate depth at which the header trenches will be dug. B51: Enter the length of header trench to be dug in feet. C51: Enter the width of trench to be dug. A default value of 18" has been given for most standard backhoes. If a width of greater or smaller proportions is needed, simply enter the desired width. D51: Select the desired backfill method from the pulldown menu which is accessed by selecting the cell. Section 3.2: Chain Trenching C56: From the pull down menu, select the desired width and depth of trenching (values given in inches). Note that this cell is for use of a 12HP walk-behind trenchor. For greater trenching, see cell C57. C57: From the pull down menu, select the desired width and depth of trenching (values given in inches). Note that this cell is for use of a 40HP riding trenchor. Standard default is 8" wide by 3ft deep (36 inches). D56: Enter the length of trench in feet to be excavated if a 12HP walk-behind trencher is to be used. D57: Enter the length of trench in feet to be excavated if a 40HP riding trencher is to be used.
