Title: The Necklace

Author: Guy de Maupassant

Setting: Paris
Characters:
Madame Mathilde Loisel- a beautiful woman who desires to be a part of upper class
Madame Jeanne Foriester- a school friend of Mathilde Loisel who became rich
Monsieur Loisel- Mathildes husband who is contented with his social contentment
Summary:
Madame Mathilde Loisel. Though she is pretty and charming, she and her husband, a
clerk in the Ministry of Education, are not well off financially. She has always dreamed of a life
of leisure, with attentive servants and a large home, but her lifestyle is decidedly more modest.
Ashamed of her social standing, she no longer visits Madame Forestier, an old school friend who
has become rich.
When the Loisels are invited to a ball, Madame Loisel becomes very upset, insisting that
she has nothing appropriate to wear to such an event. Hoping to make his wife feel better,
Monsieur Loisel offers to buy her a new dress. As the ball approaches, Madame Loisel again
becomes anxious because she has no jewels to wear. Her husband suggests she borrow jewels
from Madame Forestier. Madame Loisel pays her old friend a visit the next day. She is
welcomed and encouraged to borrow any piece of jewelry that she desires. She selects a beautiful
diamond necklace.
At the ball, Madame Loisel enjoys herself immensely and many men notice her. She
dances until 4:00 in the morning, and then she and her husband return home in a decrepit cab.
Not until they are back in their humble house does Madame Loisel realize that she has lost the
diamond necklace. Her husband spends several hours retracing their steps but finds nothing.
They decide to replace the necklace without telling Madame Forestier, and they go heavily in
debt.
Years of toil and grueling work in an effort to repay their debt ages Madame Loisel so
she looks quite older than her years. After ten long years of poverty, however, they finally pay
off their entire debt. Still, Madame Loisel wistfully and fondly remembers the evening of the
ball. One day shortly thereafter, Madame Loisel runs into Madame Forestier, who still looks
young and beautiful. Madame Loisel tells her friend the whole story. Madame Forestier, who had
not realized that her necklace had been replaced with another, reveals that the original, made of
imitation diamonds, was not valuable.
Moral Lesson:
It could be to appreciate what you have, because in a moment it could be gone. She lost her
beauty because she lost the necklace. She lost all wealth because of her stupidity that evening. Everything
would have been different if the necklace was not lost.
Title: God Knows the Truth but Waits
Author: Leo Tolstoy
Setting: at Nizhi
Characters:
Aksenov - young merchant who live in Vladimir
Vanya - the wife of Aksenov
Makar - the man who caused Aksenov sufferings

Plot Summary:

One summer day, Aksenov had to travel to a fair at Nizhi. Though his wife doesnt want him to
go because of her bad dream, the merchant insisted to go, to have a good fortune and to bring
his family rich gifts. When he was gone away, he met a merchant friend of his and they stopped
for the night. They drank tea together and went in adjoining rooms.

He did not want to sleep long so, he woke in the middle of the night. At dinner time, he went
back to the inn. An official went out and begin to ask him questions about the merchant.
Aksenov found out that the merchant he stayed last night has been found with his throat cut.
The official searched his things and found a knife with a blood on his bag.

Though he was really innocent, Aksenov was brought to trial and charged with murder of a
merchant from Riazan and the theft of twenty thousand rubles. Her wife suffered because of
what happened since, his children are too young. They tried to petition the case but it failed.
Everybody suspected him and his wife started to doubt him but he said that only God knows the
truth.

For twenty-six years, Aksenov lived in Siberian servitude. While in prison, he earned to make
boots. Through his clean living in prison, other prisons called him "Grandpa" and "Godly one." No
one from Aksenovs home wrote him and he did not even know if his wife and children were still
alive.

One day, new convicts came and one of them is Makar who is from Vladimir and once visited
Siberia. Aksenov talk to Makar and ask some questions. On their conversation, he begins to
suspect Makar that he was the one who killed the merchant. During his stay in prison, Aksenov
found out that Makar is planning to escape but still, he did not tell the official who dug the hole.

With that incident, Makar was touched and realized the mistakes he have done. He admitted that
he killed the merchant and planted the knife with Aksenov. Makar dropped from the bun and
bowed to the ground to ask forgiveness. Makar confessed his guilt. But when they issued the
order permitting Aksenov to return home, he was already dead.

moral lesson:
The story, about a man sent to prison for a murder he didn't commit, takes the form of a parable of
forgiveness. The concept of the story of a man wrongfully accussed of murder and banished to Siberia also
appears in one of Tolstoy's previous works, "War and Peace", during a philosophical discussion among two
characters who relate the story and argue how the protagonist of their story deals with injustice and fate.

Title: HARRY POTTER and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Author: Joanne K. Rowling
Setting: Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. It is in northern England. There are four
houses: Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Slytherin and Gryffindor.
Characters:
Harry Potter- he is very slender. Nothing except the scar on his forehead shows that he is
the most famous boy in the Wizard-World.
Ron Weasley- Harrys best friend. He is tall , has red hair like everybody in his family
and lots and lots of freckles.
Hermione Granger- Harrys other best friend. She comes from a Muggle family (muggles
are people who are not able to do magic).
The Dursleys- are Harrys only relatives.
Dementors- guard the prison Azkaban, where the most dangerous wizards are kept.

Summary:
At the beginning Marge Dursley visited the Dursleys. She was so mean that Harry lost control of himself
and blew her up like a balloon by accident. He had enough of his family and ran away. There he first noticed the
big black dog which would follow him from that time on. In the bus to London he heard that Sirius Black, a well-
known murderer, had got himself free from Azkaban. Nobody knew how he could have managed this Some years
ago Sirius Black had killed 13 people.
Accidentally Harry heard that Black was after him to finish Voldemorts dark plan of his revenge. At
school Harry and his friends noticed that Hagrid, their faithful friend, had become the new Care of Magical
Creatures teacher. In the first lesson he showed them Hippogriffs, but Malfoy didnt follow Hagrids instructions and
a Hippogriff nearly bit his hand off.
At the end of the year Harry, Ron and Hermione found out that Sirius Black hadnt been after Harry, but
after Scabbers, Rons old rat which wasnt a real animal. In fact Scabbers was a wizard who had turned himself into
a rat. There arent many wizards in the world, who are able to do this. They are called Animagi. Peter Pettigrew alias
Scabbers alias Wormtail had tricked all the famous wizards. All of them thought that Sirius Black, Harrys
godfather, had murdered Lily and James Potter and 13 other people (including Peter Pettigrew), but it was all
Wormtails fault.
Wormtail escaped and nobody believed their story except Dumbledore. Bad luck for Sirius, who had been caught.
Harry and Hermione saved Buckbeak, the Hippogriff which would have been killed by an executioner of Malfoys
fellows. Sirius was caught by the Dementors but Harry and Hermione went back in the real time and brought
Buckbeak to Sirius prison at Hogwarts.
Harry was very sad because now he had to go back to the Dursleys during the summer holidays. When they were on
the train towards home the first letter from Sirius arrived and Ron got a little owl with the post. Sirius had thought it
would be nice to get him one because now his rat was gone and it was sort of his fault.
Moral Lesson: The lesson is that you should learn all sides of the story before making judgements, and
that secrets and unforseen circumstances can greatly impact peoples lives. Of course, the overlaid
theme of all the Harry Potter books are there too: That goodness, kindness, and truth conquer evil.
