TecTalis 1200
1. Introduction:
TecTalis 1200 is a phosphate-free reactive conversion coating formulated for
use in the treatment of steel, zinc and aluminum surfaces. The pretreatment is
free of regulated organic components and increases the corrosion resistance of
painted metal surfaces.
The pretreatment solution is applied by spray applications under ambient
conditions.
2. Operating Summary:

TecTalis 1200 Make Up A 25.2 lb (3.0 gallons)
TecTalis 1200 Make Up B 0.45 lb (0.05 gallons)

Parco Neutralizer 700 2.44 lb (0.27 gallons)
Operation and Control:

pH 4.0 0.2
Component A 0.800 1.300 Absorbance @ 436 nm

Component B 0.150 0.450 Absorbance @ 610 nm

Time 60 to 120 seconds
Temperature 55 to 115 Fahrenheit
3. The Process:
The complete process for the treatment with TecTalis 1200 consists of the
following steps:
A. Cleaning
B. City water rinsing
C. Deionized or low conductivity water rinsing
D. Conversion coating

E. DI/RO water rinsing
F. Drying (optional)
4. Materials:
TecTalis 1200 Make Up A
TecTalis 1200 Make Up B
PARCO Neutralizer 700
Deoxidine 2520
Testing Reagents and Apparatus
TecTalis 1200 R20
5. Equipment:
All equipment for use with the process bath should be constructed of 304 or
316 stainless steel. If mild steel is used in construction, it must be
appropriately lined. Please contact the Corrosion Engineering group at
1-888-215-7237 for more information.
Process piping and pumps should be constructed of 316 or 304 stainless steel
alloys. Various formulations of plastic pipe may be used with recommended
support spacing, Schedule-80 being generally recommended. CPVC and PP may be
used up to a maximum process temperature of 150 Fahrenheit. PVDF may be used
for all expected operating temperatures. All process circulation pump seals,
valve seats, door seals, etc., which come into contact with the process
solution and occasional acid equipment cleaners, can be Buna-N, EPDM, Viton
or Teflon. Note that while Hypalon is compatible with the process solution,
it is not compatible with acid equipment cleaners that may be used.
Chemical feed pump parts and other elastomers that may come into contact with
the concentrated replenishing chemical can be Buna-N, EPDM, Hypalon, Viton or
Teflon.
Support equipment available from Henkel Adhesives Technologies for this
process includes: chemical feed pumps, level controls, transfer pumps and
bulk storage tanks.
Our sales representative should be consulted for information on Henkel
Adhesives Technologies automatic process control equipment for this process
and any additional questions.
6. Surface Preparation:
Cleaning:
All metal to be treated with the processing solution must be free from grease,
oil, and other foreign matter before the treatment. A complete line of
cleaners is available and your Henkel representative will recommend the proper
Parco Cleaner for each installation.
7. Treating with the TecTalis 1200 Processing Solution:
Before buildup of the TecTalis 1200 bath, the pretreatment tank must be
cleaned thoroughly. After the tank is cleaned, fill it to about three-fourths
full with deionized water and start circulation for about 15 minutes.
Buildup:

Spray Application: Fill the tank about three-fourths full with deionized
water. Add 25.2 pounds (3 gallons) of TecTalis 1200 Make Up A for each 100
gallons. Add 0.45 lb (0.05 gallons) of TecTalis 1200 Make Up B for each 100
gallons. Add sufficient amount of deionized water to the process tank to bring
the solution up to the working level. Mix thoroughly. Determine the pH and
adjust it before beginning operation. Increase pH by addition of 2.44 pounds
(0.27 gallons) of Parco Neutralizer 700 for each 100 gallons, in small
increments. Always add Parco Neutralizer 700 in a turbulent area of the tank
so the Parco Neutralizer 700 can be diluted with bath solution very quickly to
prevent active components in the TecTalis 1200 tank from precipitating. If
the pH is higher than 4.2, add small amount of Deoxidine 2520 to lower the pH.
Operation:
Time: 60 to 120 seconds
Temperature: 55 to 115 Fahrenheit
pH: 3.8 4.2
8. Testing and Control:
pH Determination:
The pH is determined using a fluoride resistant pH probe and a pH meter
standardized at pH 4 and pH 7.
pH Range: 3.8 to 4.2.
To increase pH by 0.1 (for a bath that is above pH = 3.5): Add 0.6 fl. oz
(17.5 mL) of Parco Neutralizer 700 per 100 gallons.
To reduce pH by 0.1: Add 1 fl.oz (29 ml) of Deoxidine 2520 per 100 gallons.
Frequent testing of pH, and small additions of Deoxidine 2520 or Parco
Neutralizer 700 are preferred. Always avoid large additions of either pH
adjustment chemical.
Component A:
Component A is determined using a pHotoFlex spectrophotometer at the wave
length of 436 nm, in the 28 mm cell.
Absorbance Range: 0.800 1.300 Absorbance @ 436 nm.
Use the following procedure to analyze for Component A:
Pipette a 2 ml sample of TecTalis 1200 bath and place it into a 25 ml 1.
volumetric flask, and then fill the flask with deionized water to the mark.
Mix the sample.
Pipette a 2 ml sample from the dilution made in step 1 and place it into a 2.
50 ml volumetric flask.
Add 40 ml of Reagent Solution 156 to the 50 ml flask and mix. 3.
Add a small amount of Reagent 52 (~0.2 - 0.3 g) to the sample in step 3 and 4.
mix.
Add 2 ml of Reagent Solution 155 to the 50 ml flask and mix. Yellow color 5.
will develop.
Fill the 50 ml volumetric flask to the mark with Reagent Solution 156 and 6.
mix.
Fill a 28 mm cuvette with the prepared sample and measure the absorbance 7.
with the pHotoFlex spectrophotometer following the steps below.
Turn on the pHotoFlex spectrophotometer and from the manu select 8.
Photometry. Press Start/Enter button.
Use M button to enter into the Absorbance measurement method. 9.

Up B per 100 gal.

9. After Treatment:
Deionized or Reverse Osmosis Water Rinsing:
A deionized or reverse osmosis (RO) water rinse is preferred in order to
obtain optimum results from the treatment. A deionized or RO water rinse will
most effectively remove any water-soluble salts from the treated surface. The
design of the equipment is important for efficient use of deionized or RO
water. Consult your Henkel representative.
Drying:
Drying is not necessary if the parts will be immediately painted with a water
based electro-coat primer. Treated parts can be oven-dried at temperatures up
to 350F for 10-20 minutes. Consult your Henkel representative.

10. Storage Requirements:
TD-1323-HB concentrate may precipitate if stored at temperatures below 40 or
above 110 Fahrenheit. The product must be stored between 40 and 110F. If
TD-1323-HB is frozen or has a precipitate in the bottom of the container, do
not use it.
11. Waste Disposal Information:
Disposal information for the chemical, in the form as supplied, is given on
the Material Safety Data Sheet.
The processing bath is slightly acidic. Neutralization by the addition of
caustic soda to the rinse water or processing solution may be required prior
to discharge. Please consult with Henkel Sales and Tech. Service
Representatives on this topic.
The processing bath and sludge that accumulates in the bath can contain
ingredients other than those present in the chemical as supplied and analysis
of the solution and/or sludge may be required prior to disposal.
12. Precautionary Information:
When handling the chemical products used in this process, the first aid and
handling recommendations on the Material Safety Data Sheet for each product
should be read, understood and followed.
