General
The physical, ehemical and mechanical properties
of PVC-U pipes and fittings demonstrate their
superiority in utility and applications over
conventional materials.
(a) Densi ty
PVC has a density of approximately 1.+3 g/cm3. As
such it is less than 1/6th the weight of cast iron and
steel, making it much cheaper to transport and
easier to handle during installation.
(b) Mechani cal St rengt h
The inherent mechanical strength of PVC-U pipes,
making them suitable even in varying conditions,
can be gauged from the fact that the tensile, flexural
and compressive strength of PVC is around 450
kglcmz.
(c) El ectri cal Resi stance
PVC has a resistivity of greater than
' 1014
Ohm. cm,
and has good insulating properties.
(d) Low Thermal Conduct i vi t Y
PVC has a thermal conductivity of 0.13 W / m /
0C,
which is only a fraction of the thermal conductivity of
steel. This enables fluids to be transported through
PVC- U
pi pes, mai nt ai ni ng a uni f or m f l ui d
temperature. The lower thermal conductivity factor
also ensures that there is no external
'sweating'
of
the pipes when fluids at a very low temperature are
passing through them.
(e) Hygi eni c
PVC-U pipes offer one of the most hygienic means
of fluid transportation. They are resistantto attack by
fungi and are not subject to contamination. The
inside surface, which is extremely smooth, does not
support any growth, encrustation or fuming and no
odour or taste is transmitted to the fluid being
conveyed. This property is of prime importance for
the transportation of potable water to towns and
villages.
(f) Hydraulic Resistance and Flow
Characteri sti cs
PVC-U pipes, due to their smooth inner surface,
allow a greater flow of water than an identical size of
conventi onal
pi pi ng. The Hazen
-
Wi l l am' s constant
for fl ow for PVC-U pi pe i s around 150, whi ch i s
hi gher than that for conventi onal materi al s. The
head l oss of any proposed PVC pi pel i ne can be
readi l y cal cul ated.
(g) Chemi cal Resi stance
PVC is unaffected by most concentrations of acids,
alkalis, organic chemicals, oils and fats. This
resistance to corrosion by most chemicals makes
PVC-U pipes indispensable for contemporary
applications in various sectors of industry and for
sewerage.
( h) Fl exi bi l i t y
Being a thermoplastic material, PVC is better able to
withstand deformation in shape due to earth
movements. PVC-U pipes, in this respect, are
considerably more popular than asbestos cement
pipes, which can collapse under stress levels which
are wellwithin the limits of PVC-U pipes.
(i ) Gal vani c & El ectrol yti c l mmuni ty
Unlike metallic pipes which need special surface
coating to resist electrolytic action, PVC pipes being
a nonconductor of electricity, are totally immune to
galvanic and electrolytic attack. Thus, use of PVC-U
pipes overcomes several problems and makes
redundant any further surface treatment of the
piping material.
(j ) Fi re Resi st ance
PVC-U pipes have proved time and again that they
ar e sel f - ext i ngui shi ng and do not suppor t
combustion. They are, therefore, ideally suited for
use in buildings and other constructions.
(k) Di mensi ons of PVC-U
Pi pes
Finolex PVC-U pipes are manufactured conforming
to the latest Relevant Indian standard. This applies
to our standard range of manufacture.
Not e : PVC- U pi pe means unpl ast i ci sed
polyvinylchloride pipe, also frequently referred to as
rigid PVC pipe. The word rigid does not explain its
structure, but defines a property, which is self
explanatory.

PVC COMPOUNDS
A major contributory factor in the sustained
quality of
Finolex PVC pipes is our expertise in compounding,

EXTRUSION
PVC compound is extruded into PVC-U pipes using
the latest sophisticated equipment. Automatic in-line
machines complete the fully automatic process by
cutting the pipe into standard lengths and stacking
t hom t n nrerrent warni no
RI GI D PVC FI TTI NGS
The
process for the manufacture of rigid PVC fittings is
similar to that for the manufacture of PVC pipes. The
only difference is that after the PVC resin is
compounded, the material is injection moulded
through modern automatic screw type injection
moulding machines. lt then
' flows'
into specially
designed moulds, which have high locking pressures
ranging in hundreds of tons, and where specified
temperatures are accurately attained. This is followed
by a cooling process for a predetermined time after
which the pipe fitting is ejected, and made ready for
testing.
Fittings are also manufactured by fabrication from
PVC-U pipes. Finolex fittings can be used without the
least chance of rupture or failure for rated pressure.
TESTI NG AND QUALI TY CONTROL
Finolex PVC-U pipes and pipe fittings are subjected
to severe testing and quality control checks both
during and after production.

SELECTI ON OF PI PE DI AMETER :
For an optimum design, the velocity of the fluid
passing through the pipe is taken as 1m/sec. Using
the Flow chart available in Finolex Product
Catalogue, select the pipe size at an intersection of
velocity
=
1m/sec & discharge Q in lps. Forthis pipe
size also check the corresponding frictional losses
(h2) from the flow chart. Alternatively the frictional
losses can also be calculated by the Hazen Williams

SELECTI ON OF PRESSI . , | RE CLASS :
For selection of pressure class of a Pipeline, total
head acting on the pipe at that particular point needs
to beworked outas under:
Tot al Head (H)
=
ht +h2 + 10%of (h1+h2).
10%ot (h1 +h2) istaken for losses in valves & fittings
Please note that_the frictional losses calculated are
in meters / km. & for total head this needs to be
multiplied bythe corresponding length.
On working out the total head, Pipe Pressure Class
can be selected as below:
The principle, which is generally used, is that one
kg/cm2 is equalto 10 meters of water column.
PUMP SELECTI ON :
Pump can be selected by using the formula :
HPof pump
=
QxHl T5xr t
where 11
=
efficiency of the pump i.e. 65%.
On getting the Pump HP Select the closest
available model based on the manufacturers
specification.
It is highly recommended to once again check the
pressure class of the pipe by backward calculation
upon selecting the pump.
WATER HAMMER:
Water hammer is a
phenomenon caused due to
change of velocity that arises due to various
hydrodynamic effects. This gives rise to a series of
pressure pulsation above and below the normal
working pressure causing elastic deformation of
both liquid and pipe.
The surge pressure is very heavy and can be several
times the working pressure. Some automatic
protection equipments are available to safe guard
from the surge pressure. But considering the
inherent property of PVC and the high modulus of
elasticity, allowance for surge pressure can be very
easily neglected for design calculations.
AI R VALVE SELECTI ON &
I NSTALLATI ON :
Pipe size and Pressure class selection is often found
to be correct. But what is often neglected is the air
valve installation and use.
Comblnation of air and water is very dangerous for
PVC pipes. Air being compressible in nature, iends
to accumulate in the pipeline, in case of non-
functioning of air valves. This reacts by causing
momentary change in localized velocity, which in
turn generates high-localized pressure, which
cannot be read on a conventional pressure gauge.
To avoid this phenomenon, good quality air valves
should be installed at all peak points in the pipeline
with a distance of 300to 400 meters between them.
Air valves are of two types : Single acting & double
acting. As a general guideline, it is recommended
that the size of the air valve be about 1/4th the
diameter of pipe for the admission as well as release
of air. (Refer manufacturers catalogue for installation
and specification).
The function of an Air Valve is the same as that of
a nose in a human body.

Note 1 : The table is based on metric series of pipe dimension given in ISO 161/1 in respect of pipe dimensions and ISO DIS 4422
Note 2 : The wall thickness of pipe is based on a safe working stress of 8.6 MPa al27oC. The working pressure gets reduced at
sustained higher temperatures. Occassional rise in temperature, as in summer, with concurrent corresponding reduction in
temperature during nights has no deleterious effect on the working pressure of the pipes considering the total life of pipe.

RECOMMENDED SUPPORTS FOR PVC- U PLUMBI NG PI PES :
The maximum continuous seruice temperature for PVC-
U pipes is 60oC and is not recommended for use above
60oC of continuous service temperature. The pressure
ratings mentioned in the table are at 23oC & a derating
factoi needs to be applied foi-service temperatures
above2SoC,
The table below shows the percentage of working
pressure recommended for various working pressure
above23oC:
Thermal expansion of PVC is roughly 4.5 to 5 times
more than metallic pipes. As long as PVC U pipes are
buried & are used for conveying cold water, thermal
changes do not have any adverse effect on its
pedormance, But in case of exposed lines & for fluid
temperatures above ambient, effect of thermal
expansion & contraction needs to be considered.
The change in length in pipeline can be calculated as :
6l = cr xLx6t
where 6l : Change in length in mm
o : Coefficientof linearexpansionof PVC
(Refer Page 5, Table 1 :2)
6 t : Di f f e r e n c e b e t we e n a mb i e n t
temperature & maximum oPerating
temperature.
To accommodate this thermal expansion & contraction,
following methodology can be applied
1 Expansion Loop : This is most common method
used to compensate for thermal changes in a
pipeline. Atypical expansion loop is shown below
Y
#
Length of the loop offset'X' can be calculated as
X= 1. 44x dx 5l
Where d : Outside diameter of the pipe in mm.
6l : Change i n l engt h i n mm.
Also Y
=X12.
2 Fixed & Sliding points : Combination of these two
types of anchoring compensates changes due to
t her mal expansi on & cont r act i ons.
( Ref er
Manufacturers catalogue for technical specification)

Temperature)
